Even in small doses, it can be deadly.  Over 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Dr. Gary Marshall is a multi-faceted veterinary professional with years of experience in the industry. As a graduate of the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Marshall founded Island Cats Veterinary Hospital on Mercer Island, Washington in 1996. He is a mentor/coach for VetX International representing North America where he connects with many students and new graduate veterinarians on a consistent basis. With his position as Adjunct Professor for Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, there are several veterinary students receiving part of their clinical training at Island Cats. Dr. Marshall is a Past-President of the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association and still serves on the Board of Directors. He also has previously served as Vice-Chairman of the American Veterinary Medical Foundation and currently serves as one of two representatives from Washington State in the House of Delegates for the American Veterinary Medical Association. In 2020, he was appointed to the Advisory Group of the Commission for a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Veterinary Profession, a joint venture of the AVMA and AAVMC. At the end of 2020, Dr. Marshall was elected to the Board of Directors of the Women's Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative. He has really enjoyed working with the women on the board and the experience has helped him refine what allyship can and should look like. On today's show, I'm joining by Dr. Marty Becker. Also known to the public as “America's Veterinarian,” Marty is a genuine titan of vet medicine with an incredibly successful career spanning not just the decades, but also the categories. He was born and raised in potato country on a small family farm in Southern Idaho. Where his family had dairy and beef cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, and, of course, dogs and cats. Back then the cats were mostly feral and lived in the shadows of the haystacks and farm buildings, and the dogs were outdoor-only. Becker went to veterinary school to become a dairy practitioner, but after listening to Dean Leo Bustad's introductory talk about the human-animal bond, he switched his attention to companion animals on the spot. Today, our pets occupy more of our beds than we do, which is part of the reason he founded the juggernaut “Fear Free” practice movement which aims to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress in pets by inspiring and educating the people who care for them. Over his career, Marty has owned multiple practices and built a national media profile through his TV appearances, national newspaper column, and book publishing deals. To date, he has written 23 books that have sold almost 8 million copies, including three New York Times best-sellers. Dr. Becker is an adjunct professor at his alma mater, Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and also at the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine at both Colorado State University and the University of Missouri. Dr. Stephen James is a sleep researcher with the University of Washington, College of Nursing.  He has a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice and studies the impact of sleep deprivation on police performance.  Dr. James spent 23 years in the British Military as an Irish Ranger, and knows first hand the impact lack of sleep can have. Medicine has always been a passion of hers and she considered pursuing human medicine, however she really found her place when someone suggested she look into veterinary medicine. Outside of veterinary medicine, Kim was named Miss Idaho and competed in the Miss USA pageant in 2020. We won’t spoil it for you, but she did AMAZING! We talk about how veterinary medicine may have helped in surprising ways in her pageant competitions and how her pageant work may influence her approach to veterinary medicine.
