Martin MacPhail is a special one. His ability to immediately connect with people is a rare talent—one of many that he possesses. He's been a lifelong musician and after starting indie rock band Theset with his friends & touring cities, they landed a record deal and moved to Toronto. A record release and band changes later, the group morphed into Juno award-winning Blitz Berlin with Martin, Dean Rode & Tristan Tarr. Together, they now compose music for film, television shows, and trailers, including Top Gun Maverick, House of the Dragon, Bird Box, The Girl on the Train, Blade Runner 2036, and more.He was born and raised in Victoria, a place that instilled a profound love for nature in him. His mother worked at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, before becoming a stay-at-home mom—she was also instrumental in Martin's love for sound, enrolling him in a ‘Music for Wee Folk' program as a toddler. His father has a passion for astronomy & paleontology, often taking the family on fossil bed trips. Martin and his brother also grew up practicing a martial art called aikido (which, wonderfully, is how his parents once met). After high school, he studied physics & astronomy, before leaving it behind to dedicate himself to music. A lucky break led Martin, Dean and Tristan to scoring their first film as Blitz Berlin. The trio moved to Los Angeles in 2018 to be closer to the film & TV industry, finding a clever way to connect with the right people. Martin now splits his time between Vancouver & LA. In this conversation, we explore aikido philosophy & how it helped develop his moral structure; nature informing his perspective & his preference for mystery; the process of creating a score; how the industry works these days & finding success as a musician; the connection between his love for astronomy & his work as a composer; his love letter to music; and much more. ADMIT THAT YOU'RE A SINNER. This is where that godly sorrow leads to genuine repentance for sinning against the righteous God and there is a change of heart, we change our mind and God changes our hearts and regenerates us from the inside out.B. BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART THAT JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOUR SINS, WAS BURIED, AND THAT GOD RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD. Believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and that God raised Jesus from the dead. This is trusting with all of your heart that Jesus Christ is who he said he was.C. CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD. This is trusting with all of your heart that Jesus Christ is who he said he was. Every single person who ever lived since Adam will bend their knee and confess with their mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings.
It's springtime, and Fearies abound. Let's see if we can't catch us one! The Leprechaun is one of the major images that the Mainstream Culture has of what a Feary is, or what a Feary looks like. The other, of course, is Disney's Tinkerbell. Whatever Pagan path you may be following, I'm sure I don't have to tell you that neither of those images fullfills the whole tradition of the Fearie. But anyway, the Leprechaun has a pretty interesting story by itself (or Himself - come to think of it, I've never heard of a female Leprechaun). So this week, we'll look at just what a Leprechaun is and they look like. Then we'll look at where they come from - and finally the BIG QUESTION - the Pro's and Con's of actually catching a Leprechaun. I have a story called, The Leprechaun Trap, By Teresa Bateman. Plus, let's build a Feary Garden - someplace on your property where the Fey can call home. Be well. Do good. Enjoy the show!

What does Arthur Conan Doyle have to do with the Good People?Plenty as it happens! Most folk know Doyle as the creator and author of the world’s greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes. But there is so much more to Doyle than just Sherlock Holmes. It might surprise you to know that he was a Spiritualist, he believed in Faeries and whatsmore, wasn’t afraid to speak of his beliefs publicly. Many might assume that Doyle, being the creator of Sherlock Holmes was an anti-social, detached intellectual, a man of science and logic, devoid of humour or compassion. In truth, Doyle was quite the opposite, he was an open-minded, big-hearted man.In 1922, Doyle published a book called ‘The Coming of the Fairies’ where he lay out all the evidence surrounding the claims of the Cottingley Fairy photographs but in this book, he also publishes personal experiences of sightings and encounters from people all over the world. In this episode, we enjoy three tales which were sent to Doyle from people who appreciated his sincere interest in the Good People and accepted his invitation to share their experiences with him.I am delighted to have an article about the extraordinary Arthur Conan Doyle in the current, and very special edition, of 'Fae Magazine' which celebrates the Cottingley Fairies. * PATREONTo celebrate 2 years of our Podcast (yay! did someone say cake?...), I am delighted to launch ‘Encounters with the Good People’ Patreon. Our Patreon exclusive videos will lean toward the darker side of Folk and Faerie tales, this allows us to explore some of the original tales which have been watered-down over time to be kid-friendly.I am very excited to announce our first Patreon exclusive video is available now for Patrons. It is 'The Twisted Tale of Bluebeard'. (Not to be mistaken with Blackbeard the pirate). The tale of Bluebeard, the wealthy, charming aristocrat with a disturbingly deadly hobby. This story was originally published in 1697 but its uncanny how modern the theme is, I can imagine ol' Bluebeard’s deeds would sit quite comfortably in true crime podcast today. It’s a fantastic video, I really think you’ll enjoy it and its live today for Patreon subscribers. Please visit my Patreon page and take a look around.A Special thank you to our Patrons for this episode;April Proctor, Brett Manning, Tsu, and Janice Silva.*Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider 'buying me a coffee’.This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. St. Patrick's Day comes early this year! Is it the worst classic-picture-book-holiday of all time? That's Betsy's take. But Kate challenged her to find such a beast, so she figured she'd cut her losses and hand over two to choose from. She didn't anticipate that Kate would choose BOTH! Betsy mostly chose one because it was the first time she'd seen that particular author/illustrator pairing. She chose the other because libraries pull it out every single year for their displays. The Urisk of Scotland.Solitary.Lonely.Half-human? Perhaps, but it is certain there is a lot we can learn from this kind-hearted member of the Wee Folk.Urisk dwell in isolated places, rivers and lakes. They are often sighted gazing at Humans with haunting eyes. Wanting nothing more than a wee conversation or kind company.Kitty asks why we shun these gentle, intelligent creatures and offers a bold suggestion as to how, by understanding the Urisk, we might better understand ourselves and… better our chances of reconciling the worlds of Human and the Good People. And, it’s easier than you might think…Are you up for the challenge?*Do you have your own tale of a sighting or encounter with the Good People? What do you get when you take a pinch of Beltane and add a dash of Faerie?A Month of May Mischief.Faerie of traditional Irish Faerie Folklore are old and clever, and something strange comes over them in the month of May.Did you know that in the month of May you are more likely to be assaulted, abducted, seduced or tricked by Faerie than at any other time of the year? It’s true, and Kitty is wondering why!We know the Good People, Wee Folk, Faerie or Sidhe are all around us and watching, always watching. And so it is they watch us celebrate birth and mourn death and the many landmarks twixt the two.But what do the Good People think when they witness us collectively throw off our tightly held inhibitions, ditch our clothing, paint our bodies, adorn them in flowers and branches, beat drums and dance around bonfires? Are they amused? Probably, but they are most certainly confused.Beltane, the Celtic ceremony of welcoming Summer and celebrating the warmth of the Sun and the fertility and hope it brings, is held on 30th April, and it is no coincidence that from 1st May, Faerie go a little wild.Kitty has some ideas why, warns against Faerie Spotting in the month of May and as always, explains why it’s okay to believe in Faeries. To read more stories of encounters with the Good People, share your own story of an encounter, perhaps one handed down through your family, or just an unusual experience visit:www.encounterswiththegoodpeople.comglassonionstories@gmail.comwww.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeopleCredits:Theme Music: ‘Irish Coffee’ by Giorgio Di CampoAdditional Music: ‘Birdsong in Spring’ by Sounds Majestic.Additional Music: ‘Carousel’ by Free Video Library.‘A Chant for Beltane’ poem, written by Doreen Valiente, read by Dreow Bennett from the DVD, ‘Charge of the Goddess’.‘Going Home – Theme from Local Hero’, written and performed by Mark Knopfler from the album ‘Local Hero’ soundtrack, 1983.
3 Brief Encounters and The Benefits of DaydreamingNo, not that kind of ‘Brief’ encounter (although they are common too), Kitty is here to talk about fleeting meetings with the real Faeries: The Good People, The Wee Folk or the Sidhe.Faerie of traditional Irish Faerie Folklore are old and clever, but can be terribly nosey. They are all around us and watching, always watching. But what are they thinking? Are they baffled by Brexit, or just set on spying? Should we fear them? In this episode, Kitty looks at 3 brief encounters with the Good People and asks:What do they really look like?Would you recognise one if they were sat next to you on the train?Or busking for coin on Main Street? We ponder why daydreaming is good for us and as always, Kitty explains why it’s okay to believe in Faeries. To read more stories of encounters with the Good People, share your own story of an encounter, perhaps one handed down through your family, or just an unusual experience on a visit to Ireland at:www.encounterswiththegoodpeople.comglassonionstories@gmail.comwww.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeopleCredits:‘Fairytale of New York’ written by Jem Finer and Shane McGowan. Faerie Changelings and Abductions - Part 2Leave your knocking knees at the door, Kitty is here to talk about the real Faeries: The Good People, The Wee Folk or the Sidhe.Faerie of traditional Irish Faerie Folklore sit guardian over our Natural World and are in feckin torment at the many ways we harm our environment. They are all around us and watching, always watching. But what are they thinking? Are they impressed at our efforts to recycle, upcycle and downcycle or would they gladly send us all to landfill? Should we worry about what they might do? *In this episode, Kitty takes a realistic look at what motivated a loving Grandmother to employ a woman expert in Faerie Knowledge and remedies, to rid a sickly 4 year old boy of a ‘Faerie Changeling’. A fateful decision which resulted in the worst possible outcome. Was this a case or murder, incompetence or absolute faith? We ponder why some people daydream of being abducted by the Good People while others are terrified at the notion. And wonder what do the Good People do with Humans they abduct. Are we used to serve, or entertain, the Good People or, shock horror, is it possible they need us to reproduce? Kitty throws a few new theories in the ring and asks if there is a higher purpose to these abductions? Could it be a meeting of minds, the Good People seeking Humans out for to counsel or warn? And as always, Kitty explains why it’s okay to believe in Faeries. To read more stories of encounters with the Good People, share your own story of an encounter, perhaps one handed down through your family, or just an unusual experience on a visit to Ireland at:www.encounterswiththegoodpeople.comglassonionstories@gmail.comwww.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeopleCredits:Excerpt from 'The Land of Heart's Desire' by WB Yeats. Our legends and folklore must begin somewhere, and if not from the creative imagination of a single individual then perhaps they are born from the collective experiences of a particular group. While it is difficult to trace the exact nascency of certain legends, we may be able to get a clearer idea of where a specific mystical being came to be known, the gremlin. The British pilots and aircrew of the Royal Air Force during the WWI and WWII eras began to experience baffling and inexplicable problems with their aircraft and missions. Wires that appeared to have been chewed through, sand particles found in machinery where none should be, punctures and damage that was incomprehensible were just some of the numerous mysterious problems they encountered. But with no known cause, blame fell to the gremlin a mischievous goblin-like entity said to inhabit the skies and aerodromes of the RAF and who delighted in causing trouble for airmen. Although rationality would suggest the gremlin was an invention of highly-stressed personnel looking for a comical and morale-boosting scapegoat for their problems, there are reports from veterans who claim to have seen these destructive imps in action. If true, then we must wonder if the creature creates the legend or if the legend creates the creature. Join us as we examine the discovery of a 20th-century folktale which just may be related to the ancient Wee Folk of nature. In this episode, Kelle gives a brief overview of faeries. The faerie world consists of many different types of beings: brownies, pixies, borrowers, ceely, unceely, trolls, gnomes, and elementals (i.e., wind, water, earth, and fire) to name a few. The fae are more strongly connected to Mother Earth than any other type of being. Kelle talks about which faeries are very safe to work with and which ones you may wish to avoid, but the fae, in general, are much safer to work with than the elves.References:-For more information about Kelle Sparta: www.kellesparta.comTo contact Kelle email: kelle@kellesparta.com-Driveabout (Spirit Sherpa Theme): Driveabout (Full Version)Written by: Kelle SpartaPerformed by: Kelle Sparta and Daniel SingerProduced by: Daniel Singer-The Faeries’ Oracle by Brian Froud and Jessica MacbethKeywords:Kelle Sparta, The Spirit Doctor, Spirit Sherpa, Spirit, Spiritual Life, Manifestation, Magick, Realms, Shaman, Shamanism, Wicca, Paganism, Life Transformation, Personal Journey, Personal Growth, faeries, brownies, pixies, gnomes, ceely, unceely, borrowers, trollsCredits and Licensing:“Spirit Sherpa” is the sole property of Kelle Sparta Enterprises and is distributed under a Creative Commons: BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. In this retro review Al discusses one of his all time favorite game supplements: Tales Tales of the Wee Folk. This product for Basic D&D was part of a series of supplements that gave players and game masters rules for how to use monsters as characters. So grab your shillelagh and stick a four leaf clover in your hat as we dive into the world of leprechauns, pixies, centaurs, and more!CORRECTION: I had the order of the Creature Crucible series wrong. Tall Tales of the Wee Folk is first, Top Ballista is second, The Sea People is third, and Night Howlers is the last of the series.

"Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree"... It's been the title of a hit song, and a popular saying associated with several folk-type stories about returning convicts, soldiers and others. It probably inspired the current custom of posting stickers of yellow ribbons to show support for troops. But chances are it all started with an Irish tale about a leprechaun. And it may originally have been a red garter rather than a yellow ribbon. (Come to think of it, did you know that leprechauns themselves originally were dressed in red rather than green?) This week we present "Clever Tom and the Leprechaun", a classic yarn about a fellow who thinks he's about to snag the treasure of one of the Wee Folk, but is not quite as clever as he thinks. We come to you from Montgomery, Alabama, a city rich in history. Currently the state capital, it was also the site of the first Confederate White House. It was the home of country music legend Hank Williams, and legendary novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald. (While stationed here in the army in 1919, Fitzgerald met his future wife Zelda--an encounter that inspired his short story "The last of the Belles"). But it was the city's role in the civil rights movement that really secured its place in modern history. In 1955, a 42-year-old seamstress named Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man, as African-Americans were expected to do at that time (a refusal motivated in part because she'd had a previous incident with the same driver), and after being arrested, agreed to become a guinea pig for a court case testing the city's segregation of the buses. The arrest sparked a year-long boycott of municipal buses, and a civil rights drive headed by a 26-year-old Baptist minister named Martin Luther King, Jr. Happy Listening, Dennis ("Tom"), Kimberly (Narrorator) and Zephyr (the "Leperchaun" - catch him if you can!)
