It helps me qualitatively describe how they are composed, and how they interact with the surrounding books in their respective series. More recently, I added a much shorter checklist for describing the first book in a series. Full Episode Text on Reviews That Burn Works Cited Ancrum, K. The Weight of the Stars. Imprint, 2019. ---. A conversation with Jennifer Westerfeld (University of Louisville) on the scripts that were used to write ancient Egyptian, especially hieroglyphs. Their last attested use was in the 390s AD, putting the end of their long history in our period. Meanwhile, Greek, Roman, and Christian observers were developing their own theories about how the script worked, often quite fantastic, and reacted to texts that were inscribed in public spaces. The conversation is based on Jennifer's fascinating book Egyptian Hieroglyphs in the Late Antique Imagination (University of Pennsylvania Press 2019). For more on Coptic in this period, see episode 13.

Have you ever thought about how dinosaurs lived on a warm, swampy Earth and how we live on one that's cold enough to keep pretty much the entirety of Greenland and Antarctica buried under kilometers-thick sheets of solid ice and wondered, hmm, how did we get from there to here? The short answer is that it took 50 million years of declining atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and dropping temperatures, not to mention building an ice sheet or two. For the longer story of the last 50 million years of climate change, including some of the reasons why, catch this episode of our podcast with Dr De La Rocha! You'll hear about plate tectonics and continental drift, silicate weathering, carbonate sedimentation, and the spectacular effects the growth of Earth's ice sheets have had on Earth's climate. There are also lessons here for where anthropogenic global warming is going and whether or not its effects have permanently disrupted the climate system. Fun fact: the total amount of climate change between 50 million years ago and now dwarfs what we're driving by burning fossil fuels, and yet, what we're doing is more terrifying, in that it's unfolding millions of times faster. We are born with passions, interests, talents, and dreams, and somewhere along the way, many of us lose sight of these. The best part of Christy's job is that she gets to help women following these passions and dreams learn how to protect what they're working hard to build, so they can build empires knowing they have taken steps to legally protect themselves and their business. When she isn’t working, you’ll find Christy chasing after her toddler while 39 weeks pregnant (which is hilarious), or binge-watching “Grey’s Anatomy.” In this episode we’re talking about: Making the shift from the employee mindset to the business owner mindset. Scott Westerfeld didn’t move to New York expecting to become a writer. He’s dabbled in politics, music and software design, but after 18 novels, it’s pretty safe to say that he’s found his calling. Over the years, his work has largely gravitated toward the young adult end of the bookstore, most often dealing with science-fiction themes, as is the case with his best known series, Uglies and the Leviathan. Westerfeld’s most recent work is the two-part graphic novel, The Spill Zone. Like a number of his past works, the book uses a sort of post-apocalyptic setting to tackle topics like alienation, paired with good chase scenes featuring psychedelic monster dogs and the like. The author sat down ahead of his book tour to discuss writing, life in the city, math textbooks and catering to young readers.
Spencer Keeton Cunningham is a visual artist. He travels around the world painting outdoor murals and selling work in galleries. He smuggled skateboards into Cuba, and travels to paint in Alaska, Mexico, China, Japan, British Columbia, Canada, and all over the US. We met up in the top floor tower of the Westerfeld house off of Alamo Square in SF. Its a place with a lot of history, including past residents, Anton LaVey, Kenneth Anger, and from where there have been many UFO sightings. We chatted past sunset, not bothering to turn on any lights. We talked about dreams, traveling, music, technology, films, nature, and culture. Thanks to Spencer.
