Luke 18:18-30 18 And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.   20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.'”   21 And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.”   22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”   23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.   24 Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!   25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”   26 Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?”   27 But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”   28 And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.”   29 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,   30 who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.”   What do you have?

It's a holiday, but the Washington Football Talk podcast doesn't know what holidays are, so JP Finlay, Mitch Tischler and Pete Hailey got together on Zoom to record another edition of their show. To start, the guys react to Chris Polian's addition to the front office. After that, they each give three bold predictions about how Washington's offseason will unfold, ranging from what signings they'll make in free agency to which QB they'll take in the draft. And because they can't ever stick to script, they then keep giving bonus predictions on top of their original ones and weirdly end up debating whether they'll ever be back in a locker room again. Then, to close, they toss to their interview with Taylor Heinicke, who offers up insight on his mindset, his appreciation for Scott Turner and how he's waiting for Heineken to give him a call. If you like podcasts where JP yells at Mitch for fake enthusiasm and Pete debates whether he should buy a car, then this is the episode for you.

Hulu's original animated series Solar Opposites has quickly become a hit for the streaming platform. From the creators behind Rick and Morty, this animated sitcom focuses on a family of aliens who crashland on Earth with the intention of terraforming it. But when they start to understand what makes humans special and unique, they might just learn to love the backward bipedal terrestrials. Probably not though. What'll probably happen is either the shrunken humans trapped in the Wall will revolt and find a way to take vengeance against their alien captor, or the Pupa will achieve its ultimate purpose and destroy the Earth as we know it. Maybe both will happen. Maybe neither. All we know is, we hope that Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan have an endgame in mind so that Solar Opposites doesn't try to milk its genuinely funny premise until the inevitable heat death of the universe. How To Sell Anything to Anyone Some of you might be familiar with this video from Dan Lok where he talks about getting someone to sell him a random pen. If you haven't watched it, you may be familiar with this scene in Wolf of Wall Street where a character asks someone to sell them a random pen. The concept is simple - they were trying to learn how to sell anything to anyone. This is how I think you can achieve that. Hook First, you've got to come up with the hook. A hook is something that will grab your attention. Is it that clickbait title? Is it the thumbnail? The caption? Whatever it is, you've got to grab your audience's attention. There are tons of content out there, whether it's on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram. Your goal is to make them pause for that one second and have them click on it so they can consume your content. Story After grabbing their attention, you've got to retain it. This is the fun part to me, because I love sharing and I believe that people love stories. People are constantly following other people on the internet, in hopes of getting to witness some stories. Storytime videos are available on YouTube. People make threads where they tell stories on Twitter. People love typing long stories on Instagram. Tell your story, in relation to the product you're selling. Going back to the pen example, if I were to attach a story to a pain that would increase its value, I would probably come up with a story where this pen was the exact brand and type that was used to sign a country's independence. Suddenly, this pen's perceived value is higher. Offer Now comes another fun part - the offer. You see, you have to understand that your offer is not your product or your service. Your offer is a curated package of everything that comes WITH your product. Take gym memberships for example, people love to sell a one month gym membership and give you three months for free. That's a bad offer, because people can easily model you, and suddenly your offer isn't unique or good anymore. What if I told you that I would give you a pre-recorded training by three top personal trainers when you sign up for a one-month gym membership, along with a three-meal meal plan for the entire month, and a list of recommended supplements you would need? This is what I would coin an irresistible offer. All these added bonuses are easy to obtain too and you just need to prepare the material once! This is how you sell anything to anyone - by using Hook, Story and Offer. What'll really get them is when you bundle things up in your offer, but to get them to see your offer, make sure you've got the hook and the story. Listen in to learn more! She also explores the Committee on Women’s Athletics, which focuses on identifying emerging sports for women. This committee played a key role in adding women’s rowing to the list of NCAA-sanctioned sports — a sport in which Ohio State’s program has three titles. The group also influenced the addition of women’s ice hockey to the NCAA ranks, with the Buckeyes benefiting once again, having earned a conference championship this season.  The main players on the current list of emerging sports for women include rugby, equestrian and triathlon. However, there are other sports, like women’s wrestling, that are also up for consideration.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Our first episode of tales set at sea and among sea-going folk: The Captain's Log, The Dark Gentleman, and other stories. Music: Creepy — Bensound.com.   James: Here are some totally made up tales brought to you by the magic of the internet. First this episode: The Captain's Log. James/Andrew (alternating) Once, the Captain was writing a log entry when he noticed out the window that there was another ship following them. That seemed strange, because no one had charted these waters before him. He did what he would normally do when sighting another ship: he wrote down its bearing and approximate distance, and ordered the bosun to raise more sail in order to get distance between them. After darkness had fallen, they changed course in order to lose them. Sailing in the darkness by dead of night, a ship felt like a world of its own. Gliding nearly silently through the black waters, crested with a rime of white catching the moonlight, the crew spoke softly in case they should be overheard by any other beings. Sunrise brought a fresh breeze and no sign of the ship, but that very evening it appeared once more. At dusk it was gaining on them, but once darkness fell they changed course to avoid them. Sunrise came again and brought an empty horizon. The third night a hush descended on the ship. You could hear a pin drop. From astern there came the sound of a woman crying. Her sobs rended the hearts of the men, so much was it a call to their own loneliness. "Beware!" cried the Captain. "'Tis a sprite!" But the men paid no heed, tacked the ship towards the sobbing, and tried to rescue her. One by one, they jumped into the water over the rail. One by one, they swam towards the heart-rending sound. And one by one, their sounds faded into nothingness. Finally only the Captain and the First Mate remained on the ship. "Don't you go in," said the Captain, but too late. Come morning the boat was full of men once more — climbing up the mast, hanging from the spars, and scrubbing the deck. The Captain looked around in great surprise. Returning to his cabin, he made an entry in the log reading: July Fourteenth. The crew have been replaced by fairies. God have mercy on my soul. Seventeen years later, the floating hull was discovered by a Royal Navy vessel, which determined that the boat had been abandoned, and all aboard had perished.  They found the Captain's log, the final entry still wet.   James: Chase … Andrew: Away … James: Your … Andrew: Demons … James: By … Andrew: Going … James: To … Andrew: Sea.   James: Make … Andrew: Biscuits … James: Using … Andrew: Flour … James: And … Andrew: Weevils … James: They'll … Andrew: Taste … James: Crunchy … Andrew: And … James: Delicious.   Andrew: Damp … James: Will … Andrew: Get … James: Everywhere … Andrew: When … James: You … Andrew: Are … James: At … Andrew: Sea. That wasn't really a proverb; that was just a fact. James: It was just a statement of fact.   Andrew: Rum … James: And … Andrew: Sodomy … James: Neither … Andrew: Are … James: Welcome … Andrew: In … James: My … Andrew: Navy. James: Rum and sodomy. I mean it's really just the Georgian Navy's equivalent of 'Netflix and Chill.'   Setting … Andrew: Sail … James: From … Andrew: Southampton … James: We … Andrew: Encountered … James: Three … Andrew: Witches … James: Floating … Andrew: On … James: The … Andrew: Surface … James: Of … Andrew: The … James: Sea. Andrew: One … James: Told … Andrew: Us … James: That … Andrew: Our … James: Voyage … Andrew: Would … James: Be … Andrew: Successful. James: One … Andrew: Told … James: Us … Andrew: That … James: Our … Andrew: Voyage … James: Would … Andrew: Be … James: Traumatic. Andrew: The … James: Third … Andrew: Told … James: us … Andrew: That … James: Our … Andrew: Voyage … James: Would … Andrew: Be … James: Long. Andrew: Which … James: Witch … Andrew: Was … James: Telling … Andrew: The … James: Truth?   And now: The Dark Gentleman.   Andrew/James (alternating): The morning of the ninth day of the month of May, the ship broke free of its mooring, and started to float towards the mouth of the harbour. Aboard was a distinguished gentleman, who was known throughout the land as a practitioner of the Dark Arts. He had a small moustache and black hair, an avuncular face but long talon-like fingers. He had paid for a cabin across the Atlantic Ocean. The men muttered amongst themselves superstitiously, but accepted his presence since their pay had been raised thanks to his generosity. He intended to spend the voyage shut in his room reading about the newest discoveries in the occult realm. His colleagues in the New World were anxious that he should be ready to assist in their Great Endeavour upon his arrival. His routine was to rise at dawn, read a paper from his colleagues and pray for safe weather to his guardian demons. After breakfast he would jog around the poop deck before settling down into another book. So passed the many hours and days at sea, until on the thirtieth day of the voyage a cry was raised by the lookout. "Ship astern!" There was a black sailed ship some half mile off, emerging from a mist. The Captain immediately summoned the officers, and the Dark Gentleman. "I fear that we are being tracked by pirates. We must load the cannon and prepare to defend ourselves." "Or," said the Dark Man, "we could simply repel them using…" And here he trailed off, and suggestively made a twirling shape with his fingers. The Captain was a practical man and didn't think that this would work, but gave it the go ahead anyway while preparing the cannon. The magician sat cross legged on the fore deck, surrounded by his Dark Objects. He lit a candle, made a sacrifice of his own blood, and started chanting in runic verse. The cannon was loaded, and the Captain ordered it pointed at the vessel gaining fast on them. Before he could fire the other vessel caught fire and burned to the water line. The Captain looked in astonishment and gasped. "What did you do?" The magician did not respond, but packed his Dark Objects away into his special chest, smiled, and descended back to his cabin. The crew grumbled once more. Later that day, the Captain ventured to the cabin of the Dark Master, and knocked. "Come," came a voice. "I've been wondering what —" "Yes," said the magician. "They came, of course, for me. I am the only man who knows how to unlock the magic of the Philosopher's Stone. One of my brethren in the New World has discovered such a Stone — or so he thinks — and I am heading to help him create unlimited wealth for all humankind. What will the pirates do now that gold will be valueless? Ah! That is why they want to kill me," explained the magician. "They cannot comprehend the enormity, or the wonder, of this discovery. I'm afraid that we will have to part ways at this juncture." So the magician folded his hands, lowered his gaze, and vanished. The End.   James: I'm James, and I'm here with Andrew. These stories were recorded without advanced planning and then lightly edited for the discerning listeners. Join us next time for more totally made up tales. We set out one morning from Southampton. Three witches on the water, oh aye. Oh the three witches of the Isle of White, the three witches of White … Andrew: Who've all been … The White Witches. James: The White Witches. What'll they tell you then? They said that our journey would be long and arduous but successful. Oh that's not bad. Told us it would be full of fire and brimstone, and that we'd all die. Oh. That's more specific than they usually are. Yeah, yeah. We're going home now. Andrew: I thought the third witch was going to say both of them are lying or something like two of us are lying. James: Oh yes. It's… oh, gosh. Two of us are lying. Well she has to tell the truth then 'cause otherwise it's a logical thing isn't it? Andrew: Unless all three of them were lying. James: Or all … Yes. Or one of them was lying. Andrew: Her. James: Her. Or she was an inconsistent narrator. Which would be a bigger problem.

Skylines, the CityMetric podcast

In retrospect, I suppose it was inevitable that the entire UK wasn't going to spend the next two weeks on the edge of its seat about the outcome of the West Midlands mayoral election. Anyway. What does Theresa May's decision to call a snap general election on 8 June mean for the metro mayor contests scheduled for 4 May? Will focusing minds on national politics make Tory victories more likely? Is the LibDem fightback really a thing? What'll it do to turnout? To help answer these and other equally fascinating questions, Jonn is joined by two of his colleagues from the New Statesman's politics desk, Stephen Bush and Patrick Maguire. If you've ever wanted to know Stephen's views on which preferential voting system is the worst, then this is the podcast for you. Skylines is the podcast from the New Statesman's cities site, CityMetric. It's hosted by Jonn Elledge. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Only a couple subjects to cover tonight.  Maybe a brief "get off my lawn" rant on this new Virtual Reality thing. First let me give you some rather bad news.  Podiobooks.com has been sold to a site called Scribl.  Podiobooks is still there.  Sort of.  The stuff I've already posted is still on that site.  So far. Thing is, Scribl is all about _selling_ audio versions of books.  Podiobooks was about giving away audio versions of books, and accepting donations, if any.  There weren't many donations, or at least I didn't see many.  Lots of downloads and listeners, not so much with the money. So, Scribl the sellers of audiobooks, don't accept anything using Creative Commons content.  Can't sell something licensed for only non-commercial use.  And even if I decided my recordings were not so licensed... I use Creative Commons licensed music and sound effects.  I'd have to pay for commercially usable music to support the Public Domain books I record.  And of course I can't afford to do that. Higher bitrates, that I could manage.  A few minor technical changes, maybe.  Paying money I don't have for audio I don't want to use just doesn't make sense for me. So while I've been preparing both the books I've been recording for posting to Podiobooks over the months I've been producing them... I can no longer put them on Podiobooks, because Scribl sets the rules there now, and I can't afford to fulfill their requirements.  The only place my recordings of these books will be available will be on my own website.  Which will be disappointing, because I don't have the audience Podiobooks has had.  And I won't be able to do that final stage of posting Mike Hampston's book on Podiobooks, either, because I don't have the right licensing on the music I used to back those recordings, and I don't have the right permissions from the author to put it there anyway.  Not on a commercial site like Scribl. I suppose I might put the recordings on Librivox.  The old books like Everlasting Man would be fine there.  Don't think I can put Mike's book there.  So all in all, after years of work... that kinda sucks.  I can understand Evo selling the place.  He's not obligated to keep it up just for someone like me.  But that kinda breaks my plans.  And I don't know what to do next. And that other thing... I've seen a lot of coverage of all the swell new-ish tech they offer now for trying Virtual Reality.  Got yer basic wrap-around headsets, and special motion controllers and whatnot.  All very shiny, new and expensive.  Tend to require more powerful computers and more powerful graphic cards.  Also very shiny and new. But once I thought that through, the tech is all that's new.  I've been playing around in a simulated three-dee environment for several years now, Second Life.  No wrap-around goggles, just a keyboard and mouse to control interactions.  But still, it's a three-D environment, albeit rendered in two-D.  To be fair, sure the three-D effect is clever and new.  The fancier controllers are new.  To make all that work you'll need pretty heavy-duty graphics capabilities.  So does Second Life, but I don't think the machine I use for SL could manage that.  I'm sure playing with the new hardware will be fun for a while. And yet... What'll happen in these new VR worlds, in a social sense, will not be new.  You'll start with the early adopters, and for a while the only people there will be those people.  Exclusivity has a profound impact on the feel of any social environment, on computers or otherwise.  If you were there, you know that about every previous social site, for as long as there have been computers.  But then, of course, the companies trying to make money off all that will expand, and try to expand their audience.  Crowds of new folks will come.  The builders will come.  And so will the griefers.  The nice folks who treat each other well will be there, for a while.  And the bad folks who treat others evilly will be there, too. The new tech might allow new ways to interact and experience the environment.  That'll be swell.  But the people will still be people. So I figure if you want to know how VR in virtual worlds, as compared to 3D video shows from real life, will turn out... you'll come to Second Life.  The anonymity will most likely be the same.  The interactions without apparent consequences will be the same.  The loves will be the same, the hates will be the same.  People will be the same.  Only the technology will be different. VR will be, they say, immersive.  Second Life is immersive, too.  Takes some time to get used to.  So will VR.  It would be entirely possible to upgrade the existing SL to work somewhat with VR hardware.  It might not work well, but it's liable to be doable.  And for that matter, however hard, it'd likely be quicker and cheaper than building a whole new world from scratch.  Probably won't happen.  But it could. Anyway, if folks want to know what a real Virtual World, a real Metaverse would be like in a social sense, well, we can show you.  Second Life started out as an experiment in exactly that Metaverse like experience.  Been there, done that, got the virtual teeshirt. Some of it is wonderful.  Some of the people, in particular, are wonderful.  And some of it sucks.  The sucky parts suck disproportionally to the time and effort involved.  I suppose the same could be said for the wonderful parts.   I don't think saying any of that will change anyone's opinion of SL.  People who haven't been in SL, or been long enough to actually settle in, have already set their expectations in stone between their ears, and me talking here will probably not make a damn bit of difference.  I don't think much of anyone more will come to SL to find out what VR will turn out to be.   But it's the truth.  And if anyone is still interested in the truth anymore, this would be a good place to come find some of that particular truth.  We have more than a decade of experience in a laboratory for the beginnings of that same phenomenon.  Some of it will be new.  Most of it will not. Enjoy the magical new technology and hardware.  But don't expect magical changes to human nature.  Given time, you'll be in a place very much like here.  And from my experience of previous technological advances and changes, it'll probably be much less than what we already have.   Good night.  And good luck.   Show Theme "Hot Swing" from Kevin MacLeod of Incompetech.com. The first episode of 2016 is here, and half the cast is in Vegas for CES, so this week Max "Not Greg Miller" Scoville and Andrew "Gold Nickname" Goldfarb are joined by Kallie "Anime Enthusiast" Plagge and Mitchell "Computer Boy" Dyer to talk about all the latest Playstation news. Unfortunately, everyone's been on vacation, so there isn't a ton of news -- but there is the extremely juicy rumor that Assassin's Creed is moving away from its annualized model, and that we won't see another installment until 2017, when this so-called Assassin's Creed: Empire will take players to ancient Egypt. What'll happen in the meantime? Well, rumor has it Watch Dogs 2 will drop this fall. We discuss this, as well as a bunch of other stuff. It's a podcast, just listen to it.

Listen Inside - Daily book previews from Readers in the Know by Simon Denman

Synopsis Hym and Hur are a young couple who never age and have been in love for more than a century.  They also possess an array of magical abilities, two of which are either to play pranks on humankind or to perform good deeds.  Enacting both at the same time is now what gets them into trouble, especially since it's the unruly character of Death they must deal with to bring their plans to fruition. The prank Hym and Hur have come up with must first be agreed upon by Death, who happens to be a rambunctious, difficult character.  Once agreed upon, the prank is set in motion.  Hym and Hur soon discover Death had tricked them into a contract with dire consequences for all of us. During their attempt to break the contract, Hym and Hur try to save the relationship of an earthbound couple, knowing they are truly meant for each other.  A good deed that will bring Hym and Hur even more trouble. Excerpt A bright flash lit up the restaurant window. The waitress snapped her eyes shut, thinking it was the sun bouncing off a windshield. Blinking her eyes open, she noticed the booth alongside the window was occupied. A booth she could have sworn had just been empty, and she made her way over to it. Hym set the breakfast menu down. "Coffee," he said to the waitress, "and can I get a hot fudge sundae at this hour?" "No problem," she told him. "And for you, ma'am?" "Hot tea," Hur said, "and a slice of cherry pie with two scoops of vanilla ice cream." "Sounds great," the waitress smiled, and she left them. "What'll we do today?" Hur asked Hym. Searching for an answer, his hazel eyes filled with mischief. "How about this?" he whispered. "For twenty-four hours we give everyone in Los Angeles bad luck." "But most of them already have bad luck," Hur said. "And it would be a negative. Why not give everybody good luck?" "Not really my kind of fun," he slouched. In the silence that followed, each tried to come up with something. "Breakfast time," the waitress announced. She served the drinks and desserts, and then was off to the next booth. Hur's blue eyes brightened. "I got it," she said, and it was her turn to whisper. "For a day or two, no one in Los Angeles dies." Hym slapped his forehead. "That is great!" "Oh-darn," she said. "We'll have to get you-know-who to go along with it." "Why wouldn't he?" Hym said as he dug happily into his sundae. "It'll give him a chance to shorten his list." Hur nodded skeptically as she took a big bite of her dessert.   Barney's Beanery had just opened. There were only two customers at the bar. A chubby old woman sipped a beer at one end. At the other sat Death tossing back a shot of Jim Beam. He grimaced with delight, slammed his glass down and said, "Barkeep—I'll have another." Pouring the drink, the bartender eyed Death's black coat and fedora, the pale skin and long gnarled fingers. "Perfect weather for a coat," he cracked, "must be only about 80 out there."
