Amanda discusses the marriage equality heart to heart she had with one of her dear friends, which is literally why we do this podcast. Hopefully, if you don't have someone in your life who will give you these first-hand perspectives, we bring them to your ears. We talk about living with disability, reaching marginalized communities, and the paradox of philanthropy. Philanthropy that is religious-based is shunning to entire communities. Those who shun LGBTQIA+ are missing out on brilliant minds and opportunities because no one is going to apply for jobs where they are openly and actively discriminated against unless they are desperate. Environmental racism is rampant in Omaha particularly in the realm of lead poisoning that continues to plague our neighborhoods and a disproportionate amount of marginalized folks. Julie and Casey sit down with speaker, author, top LinkedIn Learning instructor, and expert in how organizations can support women at work Selena Rezvani (who they met while working with her on her award-winning TEDx Talk “Interrupting Gender Bias Through Meeting Culture”) to talk about the necessity of bringing the “full color” version of yourself to work, dealing with Imposter Syndrome, and deeply practical strategies to make your presence felt. Along the way, they talk about the necessity of knowing what is and what is NOT the individual’s work in creating more inclusive work culture, and rewriting the prevailing “hero narratives” at your office. TOP TAKEAWAYS Selena spent lots of time in rooms where she was one of the few, or the only, woman of color. So often, the response to this is either to try to Rubik’s Cube ourselves into fitting in, or step back and disappear. Selena finally realized that to make the impact she wanted to make, she had to SHOW UP. Who is a leader? It doesn’t depend on your title, age, seniority, or experience. Are you bringing your full spectrum of contributions to solve problems? Especially because we know that the pandemic is disproportionately affecting women’s careers (caregiving, etc), we need more than ever to make sure we’re not “muting” our presence in an organization. Where are the decisions being made? Am I in those meetings? What is important around here today, and how can I tie some of my voice, my contributions directly to that? The better you know your environment, the easier it becomes to ask “what are they craving right now? What’s at the top of their minds?” As long as we’re all isolated working from home, we have to CONSCIOUSLY reach out to connect with people.  The cultures where people can truly show up and do their best work are “low-assumption cultures” - where we remain curious and don’t assume that we know what other people want, need, or think. High assumption cultures often reward certainty as a leadership quality, which tends to lead to over-confidence being adopted as a path to leadership. What if we adopted a beginner’s mindset instead? Individuals can show up with awesome, progressive leadership values, but the culture ultimately decides what is valued. What are the hero stories in your workplace? If companies want to incentivize particular behaviors, those behaviors need to be part of the narrative too. Imposter syndrome can feel like driving with a nervous, doubting passenger who is constantly second-guessing your every move and decision. Sometimes, that can lead us to never take risks at all—but what if instead, we valorized the “face-plant” moments as an integral, beautiful, necessary part of the journey? “You can’t overestimate what everyone else can do, and chronically UNDERESTIMATE what you can do." There is no question that, for many people, it can feel or BE unsafe to be fully authentic at work. This is part of what makes the “Diet Pepsi” (diluted, small, safe) version of ourselves seductive—it makes us feel like we can’t be punished or fail. But if your presence isn’t felt, it also won’t be MISSED. The work of finding and implementing that “full color” version of ourselves requires self-knowledge and continual exploration—like cultivating a garden, it’s never “done”. Connect with what REALLY lights you up, and evaluate whose opinion matters and on what scale it matters. You don’t always have to be the “inconvenienced one” in order to keep the peace or be the good girl. Look at those sub-optimal situations and ask yourself what would make it better. Asking may be easier than you think! Power comes when you feel like your 400% belong. Selena believes in creating those conditions in herself: “I know this. I prepared. I can do this.” Even for someone as poised and polished as Selena, she believes that the moments of vulnerability onstage are usually the most powerful. Lesson: Creating a ritual around showing up with your full presence - what to do before, during, and after a big presentation or other presence-intensive moment. Selena Rezvani is a recognized author, speaker, and consultant on leadership. Her debut book, The Next Generation of Women Leaders: What You Need to Lead but Won't Learn in Business School (Praeger, 2009) identifies the need for Generation X and millennial women to be seen as a viable talent pool and leadership pipeline. Her newest book, Pushback: How Smart Women Ask — and Stand Up — for What They Want (Jossey-Bass, 2012) focuses on the unmatched power of negotiation skills in women's career advancement, and was recognized with an Axiom Business Book Award. She is a Philadelphia Magazine and Forbes.com blogger and former commentator on NPR's nationally syndicated 'The 51% Perspective'.  In addition, Rezvani wrote an award-winning column on women and leadership for The Washington Post. In 2018, she gave a TEDx talk entitled Interrupting Gender Bias Through Meeting Culture, which was recognized with a Croly Journalism Award. Rezvani's professional speaking credits include the following organizations, among many others: SAP, Microsoft, Harvard University, The Clinton Foundation, eBay, Accenture, Johnson & Johnson, GoDaddy, Princeton University, and the Forte Foundation Conference. Selena also provides strategic consulting for clients who want to implement inclusion strategies with a focus on the advancement of women. She received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Social Work degrees from New York University, and has an MBA from Johns Hopkins, where she received the Edward Stegman CPA Memorial Award for Academic Excellence.

This is a call about releasing anger to find passion and calm. Today’s caller, Kirsten, is feeling anxious about what comes next for her. She is a stay-at-home mom who has fallen into the trap of looking for something external to relieve something internal. But as you know, something external never fixes or resolves what’s going on internally. [For show notes go here: Christinehassler.com/episode238] For many of us, we are so busy being ‘human doings’ that we forget about being human beings. And during this time when we are staying at home, we have an opportunity to come face-to-face with who we really are because we are less distracted. I encourage you, during this time, to go within and delve into nothingness and see what comes up. That's why my Mastery course is such a good investment at this time. This is the perfect time to do your inner work. Our passion and our true calling often reside underneath our anger. If we haven’t addressed our anger, especially as women who tend not to let it out, it is hard to find our passion. And, passion and purpose is a juicy, fiery energy. What we think we want to do often comes from a place of conditioning. But when we release the energy of compassion, we open up the second chakra of our body and when we pull the anger out all of the passion opens up. Releasing anger in a healthy way, as in Expectation Hangover, basically it is finding a safe space. It is important that we voice our feelings at our parents in particular, not at them directly but in a therapeutic way. They don’t need to know about it. In our effort to protect them, we suppress our feelings. When we get the anger out, let it go and eventually get to forgiveness, real forgiveness, then we can have healthier relationships with our parents. It is important to release our anger, release our sadness and to get our energy up and moving so it doesn’t turn into anxiety, fear, pain, or disease. Would you like to work directly with me? I have two Private Client spots open. Email Jill@ChristineHassler.com for more information. The program for women seeking to call in an amazing, conscious relationship includes nine calls, a Facebook group, Facebook Lives, and a bonus live event in September. Christinehassler.com/bethequeen/   Consider/Ask Yourself: Are you wondering what’s next? Are you returning to the work environment or reevaluating what you want to be doing? Did you have a parent who had a temper but maybe it wasn’t directed at you so you could see their loving side so you don’t think it impacted you? Do you have a hard time feeling and expressing anger in a healthy way? Or, do you feel guilty about acknowledging your anger at someone you love because you feel protective of that person? How do you deal in calm when there is nothing to do? Does anxiety get triggered when you don’t know what is next?   Kirsten’s Question: Kirsten feels lost and is trying to find herself now that her kids are getting older.   Kirsten’s Key Insights and Ahas: She is married with two children. She worries about where her worth and value will come from in the future. Her identity is based on her being a wife and mother. She was financially self-reliant from a very young age. She is not fond of relying on her husband for money. Her father had a temper and was aggressive with other family members. She feels anger toward her parents but is very protective of her father. She felt unsettled as a child.   How to Get Over It and On With It: She should read 20-Something, 20-Everything: A Quarter-life Woman's Guide to Balance and Direction, by Christine Hassler. She needs to work toward true forgiveness toward her father. She needs to practice release writing and start the sentences with “I am angry because…” She should read Expectation Hangover and join my Personal Mastery course.   Assignments and Takeaways: Go back and listen to Coaches Corner with Nicole Sachs on how emotions create chronic pain in our body.  If you are in your twenties or early thirties, grab a copy of 20-Something, 20-Everything for women or 20-Something Manifesto: Quarter-Lifers Speak Out About Who They Are, What They Want, and How to Get It, by Christine Hassler. 1) Talk about your product/service in terms of who you're talking to and WHAT THEY WANT (not what your selling) Here's an example of a sign I seen for a car garage: "AB Auto Repairs & Sales" I would suggest rather than using the word "sales" I would suggest the words "service" or "MOT" which are actually beneficial to the prospects who might be reading the sign. 2)90% of the prospects decisions to buy is based on just 10% of features and benefits. - Your job is to find out what one feature and benefit they are interested in. - Once you have the answer and you know what the leading benefit is that the prospect seek. This is what Brian Tracy calls the "Hot Button" and you want to focus on the hot button throughout the rest of your sales presentation. - The best way to find the Hot Button is to ask lots of questions upfront. 3) Market Research Exercise - Call 10 customers right now and ask them: - Question #1 "How is the service and can I help you with anything?" - Question #2 "You could have bough this product/service from somewhere else. Tell me exactly why you decided to buy from us?" These 2 questions are great customer service calls but usually result in making more sales because it puts you at the front of mind of the client when they need your product or services (sometimes they need what you have that moment you're calling). - Here's some examples of feedback I got by asking my own customers these questions: "I liked your cool confident approach. I could tell you knew what you were talking about. You were friendly, easy to talk to, we talked a lot (at least 3 meetings) and took a soft approach to the sale as you did not push the sale."

For the archives and to sign-up for book updates:   http://www.influencereconomy.com/book/   Brian Koppelman joined Stories From the Influencer Economy as this week's guest. I originally recorded this episode at Brian's office in New York City last fall.  We talked in detail about creativity, podcasting, and finding that curiousity for what gets you motivated and inspired.   Brian is the co-writer of films such as Rounders and Ocean's Thirteen, as well as the co-director of the Emmy Award winning "30 for 30," film on Jimmy Connors This is What They Want.    Brian is an avid podcast listener and"loves the intimacy of the conversations ." He talks about how Marc Maron's WTF inspired him to get into podcasting. Brian also details how he connected Bill Simmons and Dave Jacoby of Grantland, and how The Moment podcast came to be.     He was invited on the show to talk about his creative process around filmmaking, and his embracing of social media in the digital age.  As a creator, he has launched many big ideas online...   Brian also created the extremely popular "Six Second Screenwriting Tips" on Vine.  The Vine series came out of questions received from Twitter.  He created one Vine every day (for 300 days), and one Vine has over 20 million loops.  The videos were focused on the idea of “giving yourself permission to create.”    He recently completed a TV series with Paul Giamatti for Showtime called Billions.  Billions, the setting is the financial industry in New York.  He collaborated with his long time writing/directing partner David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin.  Quotes:   “I’ve never calculated one part of my work. I’ve always just led with what fascinates me.  That’s why having the conversations is easy too. That’s what led to every movie… All this came from only being obsessed with chasing down my passions and being unrelenting with the desire to be able to tell my children that I fought to live the creative life I wanted to live and that they could do the same.”  •   “I want all the things that I say to be things that I believe and have some value.” •   “I actually don’t think that there is such a thing as remarkable people; people are the result of the actions that they take and then how they process the feedback from those actions.”    •   "A blocked artist is probably a bad wife or husband.”      Connect: •   Brian on Twitter:  https://twitter.com/briankoppelman •   Brian on Vine:  https://vine.co/briankoppelman •   Brian's website:  http://briankoppelman.com   •   At the end of the show, he suggests that you watch his film Solitary Man: http://www.solitarymanmovie.com

In Seoul's Insadong district, Colin talks with Michael Breen, author of The Koreans: Who They Are, What They Want, Where Their Future Lies as well as other books on Kim Jong-il and Sun Myung Moon as well as founder and CEO of Insight Communications Consultants. They discuss what you can infer about Korean society from the way Koreans drive versus now versus when he first wrote wrote The Koreans; the difference in the role of the law where it has traditionally oppressed people, as in Korea, and in society like the United States; the permanently red traffic lights in front of the president's house, and how you get through by "looking at the man"; what effect the sinking of the Sewol and the "third-world accidents" that preceded it had on the country's psyche as a developed nation; why those from already-developed countries have a hard time advising less-developed nations on matters like corruption; how "the politics lags behind the quality of the the people" in Korea, why the skills of rhetoric matter less there than elsewhere, and what the situation might have in common with Yes Minister; the dictator Park Chung-hee, "son of a bitch, but our son of a pitch" who ordered the country into development; why the South Korean government has no long-term plan for unification with the North; what sort of country he thought he'd got into in 1982, the extent of his ignorance about it at first, and the theoretical frameworks and attitudes he thereby escaped; the moment he found himself taking the side of journalist-beating cops; how Korean dictators, not just "random brutes" who rose to power, got put there by a particular system; why the potential "Seoul Spring" after the fall of Park Chung-hee didn't immediately lead to democracy, but to conflicts between the citizenry and the police; what he heard (and couldn't hear) in North Korea; how many branches of Starbucks he could hit with a stone (and how different were the old coffee shops in which dissidents met); what got stamp collectors arrested in the "old" South Korea; what lengths the South Korean government goes to not to allow its citizens their own judgment on North Korea; the lingering sense, in South Korea, that the North may have taken the high road; the issue of how unbroken Korean history really could have remained over the millennia; the Korean lack of an idea of Korean philosophical tradition; what got him interested enough in the Koreans to write The Koreans; the traditionally condescending (if thoughtfully condescending) attitude foreigners had toward Korea; what may change in the next edition in The Koreans, especially its coverage of culture; whether modern Korea remains recognizably the same place he came to in 1982; and what issues might make the most impact on the country soon.
