What if we're wrong about the sun? Current consensus in the astrophysics community suggests that our planet orbits a burning ball of gaseous plasma - but there's compelling evidence that suggests the sun is actually made out of liquid metallic hydrogen. If this is true, it isn't just that we have a new model of the sun. All of astrophysics, from the Big Bang to the nature of white dwarf stars and neutron stars - will have to be rewritten. For this conversation about the true nature of the sun, we bring together two titans of science and industry. First is Dr. Pierre Marie Robitaille, who is the former director of MRI Research at the Ohio State University, where he designed and tested the world's first 8-Tesla MRI machine. Today, he is the champion of the liquid sun model of stars, which he presents in his formal scientific papers (https://vixra.org/author/pierre-marie_robitaille) and at his @skyscholar YouTube channel. Next is Jim Keller, a computer architect who has been a central player in the silicon revolution at DEC, AMD, Intel, Tesla, and Apple. Today, he is developing open-source hardware for artificial intelligence at Tenstorrent, as well as a fully automated semiconductor fabrication platform that will shorten chip production timelines to hours instead of months. Our conversation here closes a strange loop, set in motion by Keller coming across an early draft of Dr. Robitaille's “Forty Lines of Evidence For Condensed Matter - The Sun on Trial” (https://vixra.org/pdf/1310.0110v1.pdf). In the next few weeks, a new loop opens - Keller is a major supporter of our Beyond the Big Bang meeting in Sesimbra, Portugal which promises to be a long weekend of busting paradigms in astrophysics and cosmology. Episode 256 of The Independent Characters is a long one... and we even reigned it in! We had a lot to talk about here. We revisit episode 72, where we looked deep into the history and current issues of White Dwarf. In this episode we bridge the gap between episode 72 and now, in an episode we titled White Dwarf: Now and Again. Nearly 12 years have passed since our last coverage of this topic and it was due for a refresh as White Dwarf itself seems to have gone through many refreshes. To help us with this discussion, we are joined by Campbell from the 40k Badcast again. He always brings some great insight. We hope you enjoy Episode 256... and are here for the four hour episode! This soft-spoken bedtime story is a journey to the discovery of exoplanets. We will visit some of them, like Proxima Centauri B, OTS 44 and Kepler 438b. I will also tell you about the different types of planets and stars, including stars that no longer shine like old white dwarfs or neutron stars; methods to discover planets that are invisible from Earth, like Transit Photometry or Doppler Spectroscopy; and astrobiology: the field of research that studies the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Paul Cockburn joined Games Workshop from TSR UK having worked on Imagine Magazine and supplements for Dungeons & Dragons.During his time at GW Paul oversaw the relocation of White Dwarf from London to Nottingham and its evolution into a dedicated Warhammer magazine. Based on new research reported by Matt Williams in Universe Today, an Earth-like planet orbiting a white dwarf star 4,000 light years away might offer a preview of our own solar system's distant future. Journey through the dramatic transformation as our Sun expands into a massive red giant, consuming Mercury and Venus before shedding its outer layers and shrinking to a tiny white dwarf. Explore how Earth might survive this cosmic evolution, migrating to a more distant orbit in a permanently frozen state where ice badgers could theoretically evolve to thrive in the dim light of our shrunken star. Author and former Games Workshop board member Peter Darvill-Evans in conversation with Jordan Sorcery.Games Workshop and White Dwarf have a long history dating back to days before Warhammer Fantasy even existed. Under the tenure of co-founders Steve Jackson and Sir Ian Livingstone GW was the European importer of the new roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons, the UK publisher of multiple RPGs from companies like Chaosium, and the retailer for all manner of tabletop games and distractions. By the mid-80s the founders would leave to concentrate on gamebook adventures for Fighting Fantasy, whilst a boardroom battle determined the order of succession and the shift for Games Workshop from selling everyone's games, to focusing on their own creations manufactured in Nottingham. My guest today joined Games Workshop in those early days, working in the first retail store before managing the entire retail operation. He contributed to White Dwarf, played in Ian & Steve's band, wrote some Fighting Fantasy adventures of his own, created the Dr Who RPG and published many Dr Who books, and he was even a member of the board during that stressful succession.Peter-Darvill Evans interview._____________________________ PETER'S LINKS:[PETER DARVILL-EVANS WEBSITE]https://peterdarvillevans.com/_____________________________ JORDAN'S LINKS:[ ELEMENT GAMES AFFILIATE LINK ]https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216[ PATREON ]https://www.patreon.com/jordansorcery[ KO-FI ]https://ko-fi.com/jordansorcery[ YOUTUBE CHANNELS ]History & Editorial: https://youtube.com/ @jordansorceryLongform Conversation: https://youtube.com/ @JordanSorceryPods [ WEBSITE ]https://jordansorcery.com/#GamesWorkshop #FightingFantasy #WhiteDwarf #DrWho #tabletop #boardgames #RPG #wargames_____________________________ Art, Music, and Copyright: Images used belong to their respective copyright owners Jordan Sorcery Theme by Joylin Music Jordan Sorcery Heraldry by Becka Moor Jordan Sorcery Heraldry and Theme copyright @jordansorceryTiny Bar ChatsChats with influential, inspiring, prolific and community oriented folks.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

A nova is a star that periodically sheds mass in a huge flare-up of light and energy. This week, astrophysicist Dr. Carlos Badenes from the University of Pittsburgh joins us to discuss a star that should be going nova in the next few weeks--and will be visible in the night sky for about 6-7 days! T Corona Borealis (TCrB) is a binary system comprising two stars in the constellation Corona Borealis that bursts into magnitude 2 (as seen from Earth) about every 80 years--and should do so again by mid-September! Join us. Headlines: NASA's Perseverance rover discovers a rock on Mars that shows intriguing signs of potential ancient microbial life, sparking excitement among scientists Starliner Update: NASA and Boeing discuss the extended mission of the Starliner spacecraft, addressing concerns and highlighting the crew's safety and productivity Scientists uncover evidence suggesting Mercury's crust harbors a 10-mile thick diamond layer, formed by unique planetary processes Main Topic - The Visible Nova in the Sky Near You: T Coronae Borealis, a recurring nova located in the constellation Corona Borealis, is expected to become visible to the naked eye between now and September 2024 Novae are binary star systems where a white dwarf accumulates material from its companion star, leading to a thermonuclear runaway and a bright outburst Supernovae, in contrast, are the explosive deaths of stars, either through the complete disruption of a white dwarf or the collapse of a massive star's core Historical accounts of "new stars" include Tycho's Supernova (1572), Kepler's Supernova (1604), and the Crab Nebula progenitor (1054) Dr. Badenes discusses his research on novae in nearby galaxies and the use of the Hubble Space Telescope to study the progenitors of thermonuclear supernovae The crew explores the limits of recurring novae, the possibility of a white dwarf exploding as a Type Ia supernova, and the anticipated supernova of the star Betelgeuse in the constellation Orion Hosts: Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik Guest: Carlos Badenes Download or subscribe to this show at https://twit.tv/shows/this-week-in-space.
