Scott Muni (May 10, 1930 – September 28, 2004) was an American disc jockey, who worked at the heyday of the AM Top 40 format and then was a pioneer of FM progressive rock radio. Muni, in 1966, he joined WOR-FM (98.7), one of the earliest stations in the country to program free-form progressive rock music. The progressive format did not last at that station. In 1967 Muni moved to WNEW-FM (102.7), which had been running a format of pop hits and show tunes, hosted by an all-woman staff. This time, the Progressive Rock format really took hold, with WNEW-FM becoming a legendary rock station. Muni stayed there for three decades as the afternoon DJ and sometimes program director. Muni was described by fellow WNEW-FM DJ Dennis Elsas as "the heart and soul of the place". Under assorted management changes during the 1990s WNEW-FM lost its way, and in 1998 Muni ended up hosting a one-hour noontime classic rock program at WAXQ (104.3 FM), where he worked until suffering a stroke in early 2004. This is a telescoped aircheck from 1966. (The music has been redacted).

Michael Harrison has served as the editor and publisher of TALKERS (), the leading trade publication in the American talk media industry for the past 30 years. In that capacity, he has become widely recognized as one of America’s leading authorities on radio, communications, and public opinion as it is expressed in the media as well as being director of the annual TALKERS Convention held in New York City for the past 23 years. Harrison graduated from Hofstra University in 1971. He is a charter inductee in the Hofstra Radio Hall of Fame and sits on the university’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication Dean’s Advisory Board. Still dynamic after a 52-year career as a broadcaster, he is a pioneer and innovator in both talk and rock radio as well as being a driving force in the industry’s trade publication field. He was the founding architect and first program director of the progressive rock format that launched the legendary WLIR, Long Island to national fame in 1970, while still a student. He went on to become the ground breaking morning host at historic album rocker WNEW-FM, New York shortly after graduation and served as a professor teaching Music & Contemporary Culture at New York University. Harrison has also been an air personality or on-air program director at such stations as KMET, Los Angeles; KPRI, San Diego; WZLX, Boston; WCBS-FM and WPIX, New York; WTIC, Hartford and others. He owned and operated one of the early talkers of the modern era — WSPR, Springfield, MA. He currently finds time in his busy schedule to guest-host talk shows at WRKO, Boston and WTIC, Hartford, which he describes as “a labor of love.” He has written about, defined, predicted or engaged in hands-on programming of major movements in radio’s evolution from coining new format terms to the development of music and talk-topic chart methodology. Among his inventions is the term “AOR” (Album Oriented Rock) which he coined in the early 1970s, while programming KPRI, to describe the more commercially-accessible brand of “progressive rock” radio that remained a dominant format for more than 40 years. Today, it is called “classic rock.” He has hosted and produced national radio programs syndicated by ABC Radio Networks, Westwood One, CBS Radio, MJI Broadcasting, RKO Radio and more. These include the legendary “Album Greats: The History of Album Rock,” “The Great American Radio Show,” “Mike Harrison’s Rock Connections” and “Backstage at the Grammys” among others. Harrison served as the first managing editor of Radio & Records during its formative years and radio columnist/record chart consultant for Billboard in the early 1980s. He was one of the first media analysts to predict the rise of podcasting before the term was widely known, not to mention serving as Program Director of the first radio station to have its own website. In addition to hosting “The Michael Harrison Wrap”, he also currently hosts PodcastOne’s “The Michael Harrison Interview” an award-winning weekly podcast geared to “media freaks, pop culture aficionados, political junkies and the philosophically curious” and, ever on the leading edge, operates an experimental “hyper-local” online talk station — Pioneer Valley Radio — in Western Massachusetts.

Don McLean was born on October 2nd 1945 in New Rochelle, NY to Elizabeth and Donald McLean. By the age of five he had developed an interest in all forms of music and would spend hours listening to the radio and his father's records. Childhood asthma meant that Don missed long periods of school and while he slipped back in his studies, his love of music was allowed to flourish. He would often perform shows for family and friends. As a teenager, he purchased his first guitar (a Harmony F Hole with a sunburst finish) from the House of Music in New Rochelle and took opera lessons paid for by his sister. These lessons combined with many hours in the swimming pool, helped Don to develop breath control, which would later allow him to sing long, continuous phrases, in songs such as “Crying”, without taking a breath. The exercise also meant his asthma improved. In 1961, Don took his only vacation with his father – a trip to Washington D.C. Sadly, a few months later his father died. Don was just 15 years old. By this time, Don's musical focus was on folk thanks, in part, to The Weavers landmark 1955 recording “Live at Carnegie Hall”. Don was determined to become a professional musician and singer and, as a 16 year old, he was already making contacts in the business. After managing to get his home number from the telephone directory, Don phoned Erik Darling. They become friends and Don visited his apartment in New York. Through Erik Darling, Don recorded his first studio sessions with Lisa Kindred and was invited to join a group with Darling and the other members of the Rooftop Singers. However, even at that time, Don saw himself as a troubadour and turned down the offer. While at Villanova University in 1963 (he stayed for just four months), Don met and became friends with JimCroce and President Kennedy was assassinated. After leaving Villanova, Don worked his ‘apprenticeship' for “Harold Leventhal Management”. This started a six year period during which time Don performed at venues like the Bitter End and Gaslight Café in New York, the Newport Folk Festival, the Cellar Door in Washington, D.C., the Main Point in Philadelphia, the Troubadour and Ash Grove in Los Angeles and over forty colleges throughout New York and New England. He appeared alongside artists like Herbie Mann, Brownie McGee and Sonny Terry, Melanie, Steppenwolf, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Janis Ian, Josh White, Ten Wheel Drive and others. Don also found time to attend night school at Iona College and, in 1968, graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration but turned down a prestigious scholarship to Columbia University Graduate School in favor of becoming resident singer at Caffe Lena in NY. While resident at Caffe Lena, the New York State Council for the Arts invited Don to become their Hudson River Troubadour. He accepted and spent the summer travelling from town to town in the Hudson Valley, giving talks about the environment and singing songs for whoever would turn up to listen. A year later, Don was a member of the first crew of the Sloop Clearwater. With Pete Seeger, they travelled the Atlantic seaboard giving concerts at each port and featuring in the news wherever they went. In 1969, Don recorded his first album, “Tapestry”, in Berkeley, CA. The student riots were going on outside the studio door as Don was singing “And I Love You So” inside. The album was first released by Mediarts and attracted good reviews and achieved some commercial success. The transition to international stardom began in 1971 with the release of “American Pie”. “American Pie” was recorded on 26th May 1971 and a month later received its first radio airplay on New York's WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM to mark the closing of The Fillmore East, the famous New York concert hall. Thirty years later, “American Pie” was voted number 5 in a poll of the 365 “Songs of the Century” compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The spring of 1975 saw some of the most candid and nostalgia-laden interviews ever from each of the four former Beatles since their split over five years prior. First up on April 19th was George Harrison, talking with WNEW FM about everything from his plans for Dark Horse Records, to a brand new studio album, to his struggles with the rock music press - specifically those of the recent harsh reviews by Rolling Stone magazine. As Harrison details in the interview, Dark Horse Records was George's way of fulfilling the creative promise of the now-defunct Apple Records - which he and fellow former fab Ringo Starr had initially envisioned re-branding without the input of the reluctant Lennon and McCartney - as the emerging artist haven it was always intended to be. In lieu of a "re-envisioned" Apple Records, Ringo's new label Ring O'Records was itself still in the launch stage, similarly hoping to rekindle some of the magic that Apple had lost since the split of the band and their break with Allen Klein. John Lennon, meanwhile, continued his series of TV and radio appearances that year with an in-depth interview on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Show, where the former Beatle spoke at length about his past, current status, and plans for the future. Similar in tone to George's WNEW talk, Lennon seemed eager to discuss the early influences of his life as a Beatle - yielding some of the most vivid recollections of those pre-fame Liverpool days ever captured on camera. Paul McCartney was making the press rounds as well, but the past was not the topic du jour for the high-flying Wings frontman. No, Macca was preparing a massive world tour and stood on the eve of the release of a brand new album, destined to be "Wings Greatest"... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode #18 – Jo Jo Russell On this episode, George and I sit down with a songwriter who has an energy and spirit that is both unique and infectious – Jo Jo Russell!  It is rare to meet a musician who has supported themselves for their entire life by playing music but that is exactly what Jo Jo has and is still doing. I think it is safe to say that when Jo Jo takes the stage, people really listen – no one leaves the room or checks out their phone!  For someone who seems so perfectly suited to be on stage you will probably be surprised to hear him say that he was terrified to play his songs in his early SSG days! Starting in the Bronx, Jo Jo's family soon went on summer vacation to a country cabin in the Greenwood Lake area and at the end of the season his mother announced that they were not going back to the city but would settle right where they were even though it meant his family were the only winter residents of the community.  This was an early indicator that when Mom wanted to do something, nothing would stand in her way!  She helped his older brother learn standards on guitar and then placed an ad for musicians, auditioned a number of potential players and chose the bandmates that would play with her son – Jo Jo, as the younger brother, assisted the band's drummer.  Soon thereafter Jo Jo took over the drum kit and the family had a band.  They began as an instrumental, standards group but everything changed when the Beatle's arrived.  The greatest fun he remembers was when they were called “The Laughing Stock” where anything went and the audience was invited to join in.  Jo Jo said they would do things like have laundry draped around the stage!!  Boy I wish I had seen one of those shows! Before ending this summary I need to mention that in 1980, WNEW FM had a contest where bands would send in a tape of one of their songs and Scott Muni fell in love with one of Jo Jo's “Prisoner of Rock & Roll”.  It received quite a bit of airplay for a solid month and while friends raved about it Jo Jo never did hear it on the radio. One final tidbit:  While Jo Jo was a constant songwriter, he would write the song, record it in his own home studio and that would be the end of things.  When he found SSG he had to pull out these songs and learn them all over again.  As you might imagine there was more than a little stress in taking the stage to play his songs in public for the very first time!  We are all very happy that Jo Jo pushed through to share his songs because few performers are more entertaining! There is so much more but I will leave those stories for the podcast. Hope you enjoy this episode. George & Bernie

See the Airspeed blog and show notes at www.airspeedonline.blogspot.com. Sometimes, it's good to stir things up a little. This episode has nothing to do with aviation, aerospace, jet fuel, or tearing up the sky. If you're in the mood for an aviation-related episode and don't want to listen to anything else, please skip this episode and pick us back up in January. If you're tuning in ffor the first time, my apologies. This really is an aviation and aerospace show and you can check out prior episodes for your aviation fix until the first new episode of 2007 comes out. But we're going to change things up this time. Airspeed is about to pay an homage that the podsphere owes to a very special medium and a very special time. Airspeed is finishing out a great first year. A year in which we've met lots of new people, flown in a lot in different aircraft, and realized the dream of the podsphere - Ordinary people making the closest thing they can to art and reaching out to touch other ordinary people. If you're older - over 40 or so - and you lived close enough to a metropolitan area - and you had an FM radio receiver in the mid to late 1960s - and if you were very lucky - you had a front-row seat for one of the most magical times in all of media before or since. When FM radio reached its critical mass and a backwater of the electromagnetic spectrum leaped up and captured imaginations and expanded horizons. By the 1960's AM radio was a homogenious morass of largely mediocre programming. Relatively few people had FM receivers and FM radio stations were relatively few and far between, so you pretty much listened to what was on AM or you didn't listen at all. Then, in the mid to late 1960s, guys like Jonathan Schwartz on WNEW FM in New York City started playing eclectic but carefully-chosen music and put out programming of a kind that you just can't get on the radio any more. It wasn't long before the iron heels of the program directors homogenized the airwaves and turned FM into the stereo version of AM that continues through to today. But, for a short time, there was a renaissance on the airwaves. Podcasting brings back a little bit of what it was like during those pioneering years. It's as though your radio dial has grown by thousands of stations and, if you look, you can find places in the podsphere that are as eclectic, entertaining, and inspiring as the airwaves were in the late 1960s. All of which is by way of introduction of what you're about to hear. This, by very special permission, is The Ballad of the Sandman by Mike Agranoff. Mike is a folk musician from New Jersey who plays a mean fingerstyle guitar, concertina, banjo, and ragtime piano and sings. I have seen him live at a library, in a church basement, and in a community center and he is the consummate journeyman purveyor of melodies, spoken word, and traditions new and old. I heard this piece for the first time in 1998 or so on public radio in Detroit. Mike has been kind enough to perform this at every show that I have attended. He does it entirely from memory and with a conviction that puts you in the darkened studio of the narrator. The airing of this piece around the end of the year has become a tradition on WION in Ionia, Michigan, where this podcast also airs as a radio show. And it's always a part of my listening around the same time. I hope that you will adopt it as your own as well. So, without further ado, let's let the podsphere pay tribute to the magic of the radio - Magic that once was and magic that can be again. Here's Mike Agranoff with The Ballad of the Sandman.
