This is a fun one! April 2, 1980 at My Father's Place in Roslyn, NY from an FM broadcast on WLIR. The sound and the perfomances are stellar. Nice, short, story songs sung impeccably... kinda in a Kinks vein. If you're like me you'll be reminded of a whole bunch of great songs that had slid over the horizon over the years, overshadowed by the fame of "Tempted". You'll enjoy this one.

Episode 124: Kari has a new show on Charlie's 80's Attic called Dare to Be Different. It is a show based on the music from iconic radio stations WLIR and KROQ (think new wave, punk, and non-mainstream). So in celebration of her new show we are taking a look at songs which fit into that format: songs from Robert Palmer (yes, THAT Robert Palmer), King, and Missing Persons.Next, grab your boarding passes as it's time for Top of The Pops! This is the segment where your hosts take a look at number one hits from Across the Pond. Find out if Boris Gardiner and Yazz and the Plastic Population were as successful on the Billboard charts.
Episode 121: Inspired by Kari's recent book choice, The Motherlode by Clover Hope. Episode 121 is about some of the female Hip Hop pioneers: Mercedes Young Ladies, The Sequence, and Roxanne Shante. Joe and Kari also breakdown a historic battle called The Roxanne Wars (1984 - 1985). There were no survivors.Next is The Screamer of the Week which is inspired by historic radio station WLIR. This segment features cutting edge rock music from the early 80's, with a look at a Sting-assisted band that should've made A Bigger Splash.
Episode 113: So many tidbits this week, we almost called this episode "The Tidbit Hour" but worry not -- Joe and Kari finally get to the main event, Longest Guitar Solos of the 80's. Joe and Kari love a nice, shredding guitar solo, and this rundown of the longest guitar solos in Hot 100 Hits will have you saying "Oh. Sure", "Hmm...okay, I guess," and "Who is that now??" // Screamer of the Week -- Joe and Kari just can't stop headbanging this week with a look at some picks from influential rock station WLIR. Rock on!!!
Episode 98: School is in session! Up first is a vocabulary lesson!! What does it mean when country goes pop? That would be Countrypolitan -- think Dolly Parton, Eddie Rabbit, and Juice Newton. Sophisti-pop refers to Style Council and Simply Red, among others. You'll also get a couple of history lessons in there. // Screamer of the Week: Friend of the podcast Charlie introduced us to WLIR, the famous New Wave radio station that broke some pretty amazing 80's acts. Kari goes full rockabilly in this week's episode. Cut some tiny bangs and tune in!
Michael Harrison has served as the editor and publisher of TALKERS (), the leading trade publication in the American talk media industry for the past 30 years. In that capacity, he has become widely recognized as one of America’s leading authorities on radio, communications, and public opinion as it is expressed in the media as well as being director of the annual TALKERS Convention held in New York City for the past 23 years. Harrison graduated from Hofstra University in 1971. He is a charter inductee in the Hofstra Radio Hall of Fame and sits on the university’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication Dean’s Advisory Board. Still dynamic after a 52-year career as a broadcaster, he is a pioneer and innovator in both talk and rock radio as well as being a driving force in the industry’s trade publication field. He was the founding architect and first program director of the progressive rock format that launched the legendary WLIR, Long Island to national fame in 1970, while still a student. He went on to become the ground breaking morning host at historic album rocker WNEW-FM, New York shortly after graduation and served as a professor teaching Music & Contemporary Culture at New York University. Harrison has also been an air personality or on-air program director at such stations as KMET, Los Angeles; KPRI, San Diego; WZLX, Boston; WCBS-FM and WPIX, New York; WTIC, Hartford and others. He owned and operated one of the early talkers of the modern era — WSPR, Springfield, MA. He currently finds time in his busy schedule to guest-host talk shows at WRKO, Boston and WTIC, Hartford, which he describes as “a labor of love.” He has written about, defined, predicted or engaged in hands-on programming of major movements in radio’s evolution from coining new format terms to the development of music and talk-topic chart methodology. Among his inventions is the term “AOR” (Album Oriented Rock) which he coined in the early 1970s, while programming KPRI, to describe the more commercially-accessible brand of “progressive rock” radio that remained a dominant format for more than 40 years. Today, it is called “classic rock.” He has hosted and produced national radio programs syndicated by ABC Radio Networks, Westwood One, CBS Radio, MJI Broadcasting, RKO Radio and more. These include the legendary “Album Greats: The History of Album Rock,” “The Great American Radio Show,” “Mike Harrison’s Rock Connections” and “Backstage at the Grammys” among others. Harrison served as the first managing editor of Radio & Records during its formative years and radio columnist/record chart consultant for Billboard in the early 1980s. He was one of the first media analysts to predict the rise of podcasting before the term was widely known, not to mention serving as Program Director of the first radio station to have its own website. In addition to hosting “The Michael Harrison Wrap”, he also currently hosts PodcastOne’s “The Michael Harrison Interview” an award-winning weekly podcast geared to “media freaks, pop culture aficionados, political junkies and the philosophically curious” and, ever on the leading edge, operates an experimental “hyper-local” online talk station — Pioneer Valley Radio — in Western Massachusetts.

Before Streaming, Podcasts, and Downloads, were 33 long play vinylrecords (with pops and scratches), 8 track tapes (with the hiss and the clicks in the middle of songs), cassettes and they were all found in record stores located everywhere as sole retail stores, chains and in Department stores. Scott Sheryl started in the record business in the 1970s and is still going strong today. Richard Solomon and Scott went into the studio and dusted off old editions of Billboard magazine and some great oldies to look at at an era that is now mostly historic.
While taping the My Father's Place TV show, we interviewed lara Hope and the Ark Tones in the Green Room and it was a blast. Their music is great and currently they are the opening act for the Stray Cats.

ELLEN GOLDFARB – Director / Producer Ellen Goldfarb is the Creator, Director and Producer of Dare To Be Different. Ellen grew up listening to radio station WLIR, which greatly impacted her life. She has produced and directed many projects including 2 concerts, but this is her first feature film. She studied in New York and took screenwriting classes through UCLA's extension program. Dare To Be Different is a feature length documentary revealing how 80's music was really introduced to the US from Europe. U2, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, Blondie, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, The Clash, The Cure: over half a billion records sold and you may never have heard of them if not for a small suburban radio station on Long Island, NY: WLIR. In August, 1982, a small group of radio visionaries knew they couldn't compete with the mega-stations in New York City. With one brave decision, they changed the sound of American culture forever. Program Director Denis McNamara, the 'LIR crew and the biggest artists of the era tell the story of how they battled the FCC, the record labels, mega-radio and all the conventional rules to create a musical movement that brought the New Wave to America.
Fellow RFB stablemate Michele Carlo ("Fish Out of Agua") brings us back to 1984 with excerpts from a few of her brilliantly made mixtapes from a then very independent Long Island based station called WLIR. It's what Michele calls "happy music."
