SAL is an Irish singer-songwriter with a difference. Her music explores the many colours in the spectrum of folk music music, always showcasing her own versatility as an artist, whilst maintaining her pop sensibilities. Originally hailing from County Kildare, Ireland, SAL has spent her recent years in Cork, Ireland, creating and performing all the time. After signing a management deal with London based Charlie B Management, SAL was unveiled at Liverpool Irish Festival 2021, where she showcased a set of brand new material with her band. SAL has underwent international touring since 2019 all across Europe, from the UK to Germany to Switzerland. Her music maintains obscure and vibrant pop sensibilities, with organic indie folk at the foundation of her writing. In the world of live music, SAL has covered a huge amount of ground, from gracing stages in some of Ireland's most prestigious venues and festivals, to regular shows in the UK and Germany. Along the way, she has shared the stage with some amazing artists, such as Declan O'Rourke, Aimee, Scullion, Hermitage Green, Mick Flannery, The Stunning, Luka Bloom, Wyvern Lingo, and many more. 2023 was a big year for SAL. Every single release of SAL impressively reaching to Number #1 on the Irish iTunes Charts consecutively, she then did a national tour of Ireland supporting the brilliant TOUCAN, performing sold out shows in venues such as Theatre, Royal Waterford and Whelan's Dublin. After connecting with new audiences at shows in London during the summer, the artist spent winter 2023 touring with Declan O'Rourke in Cork and Killarney on his upcoming acoustic tour and also touring with Niall McCabe across Ireland. SAL started 2024 including a highly successful sold out tour of Germany in February and supporting Stephanie Rainey on her sold out tour of Ireland. With another German tour to follow this year, UK tour and Spanish dates to follow, SAL is only getting started.

Krea aka Karen Cowley is one third of Wyvern Lingo, the Choice Prize-nominated group who are currently on hiatus. Krea has just released her debut EP, The Callows. Here, she talks about the band's hiatus and how her solo project started up, before we talk through the EP track by track. Cowley was awarded the prestigious Music Bursary by the Arts Council, as well as a residency at the renowned Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. It was during this residency that she dedicated her time to crafting the songs that would make up The Callows. She says: "The Callows are the flat grasslands along the Shannon, and the word comes from the Irish 'caladh' for meadow. My mother is from Shannonbridge, Co. Offaly, where I spent a lot of time as a child. There's something really tranquil and ancient about the landscape there. I wrote 'The Callows' at a time where I was feeling unmoored and craving a stronger sense of identity and rootedness. Images of this beautiful part of the country kept coming to mind, particularly the view from where my grandparents are buried at Clonmacnoise Monastery along the river. The Irish landscape and the effect that it has on me comes into each of these songs in some way, so I wanted to acknowledge that in some way in the title and artwork." Krea tour dates: July 20 - Frank's Place, Wexford July 21 - Sea Church Ballycotton, Cork July 30 - Workman's Cellar, Dublin EP LAUNCH August 17 - Harbour Bar, Bray, Double Headliner with Caoi de Barra Buy The Callows: https://krea.bandcamp.com/album/the-callows
Pack your sunglasses – we're going on an adventure. Travel is a major theme this week in honour of our special guest co-host Caoi de Barra. You will of course know Caoi as one-third of the acclaimed Wyvern Lingo. With that project currently on hiatus, Caoi has been exceedingly busy, both with her own solo work – new single 'Treehouse' is out now – and as a touring drummer with the great Wallis Bird, and rising Canadian artist Allison Russell. Based in Berlin these days, Caoi has returned home for her 'Scooter Tour of Ireland' – the second such endeavour in travelling around Ireland on a trusty scooter from gig to gig, armed with just as many instruments as she can carry. Tickets and dates for the tour are available here.On this episode, Caoi takes us through all of the above, before we tackle our favourite songs about or inspired by travelling from place to place. One third of Wyvern Lingo, Caoi De Barra released her debut solo EP Thicket at the end of summer 2022 after the Choice-nominated band announced they were going on hiatus earlier in the year. Fresh off a European and UK tour playing drums with the Grammy-nominated Allison Russell, Caoimhe talks about her new single Treehouse and her second scooter tour of Ireland. Treehouse is about the housing crisis, which De Barra says leaves her feeling trapped in a perpetual state of adolescence, where the concept of being a self-sufficient artist seems as lofty as building a dwelling up a tree - “It's really letting my petulant inner child do the problem solving”, she says. Speaking about the scooter tour, De Barra says “Exploring the backroads, towns and villages of Ireland on my 125 cc scooter feels extremely peaceful and enriching to me. Less practical than a car, but low on fuel usage, and almost as romantic as travelling on horseback. On top of that I have the privilege of performing my songs for people in the places I go to, immediately immersed in the local arts scene. The scooter tour for me is the perfect solo quest.” Tour dates: FRANKS PLACE, WEXFORD, July 13 IMMA GARDEN PARTY, DUBLIN, July 15 LIVE AT 1868, DUNGARVAN, July 16 WOODFIELD CAFE, BIRR, July 20 POPPY LANE SESSIONS, KINVARA, July 21 POT DUGGANS, ENNISTYMON, July 22 COUGHLANS, CORK, July 23 PRIMS BOOKSHOP, KINSALE, July 26 DE BARRA'S, CLONAKILTY, July 27 ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH, WATERVILLE, July 30 DOLAN'S, LIMERICK, Aug 2 THE GREEN ROOM, DINGLE, Aug 3 ARUNDELS BY THE PIER, AHAKISTA, Aug 9 MONROES, GALWAY, Aug 11 THE MUSIC LOOM, KILLYBEGS, Aug 12 THE HARBOUR BAR, BRAY, Aug 17 THE FUMBALLY, DUBLIN, Aug 18 Tour dates + ticket links: https://campsite.bio/caoidebarra Buy Caoi De Barra - Treehouse at her Bandcamp page: https://caoidebarra.bandcamp.com/
Documentary on Newstalk, producer Lisa Gernon tells the story of the voices behind the phenomenal success of ‘Irish Women in Harmony'. In 2020 ‘Irish Women in Harmony' a collective of over 40 Irish female artistes came together – while apart - to record a cover of The Cranberries' hit ‘Dreams' which was one of the most successful musical collaborations of 2020 and raised over 250K for domestic abuse charity Safe Ireland. ‘Irish Women in Harmony - Behind the Voices' was produced by Lisa Gernon and was supported by a grant from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, as part of the Sound and Vision Scheme. In ‘Irish Women in Harmony - Behind the Voices' RuthAnne, Una Healy, Lyra, Karen Cowley from Wyvern Lingo and Erica Cody tell the story of how this amazingly talented group of women came together to make this happen and thus creating this inclusive, supportive, empowering musical community for Irish female artists.
Wild Youth's Conor O'Donohoe is afraid of one thing when they make a live festival music return. It's not the queue for the toilets! It's not losing the ability to carry four pints from the bar! It's not hitting a bum note! What I'm really worried about Fergal is the crowd NOT singing back the songs! It's our first chance to play our new songs to a crowd and that is so exciting but we hope they'll know the tunes! Conor tells Fergal D'Arcy all about Ireland's first music festival in SIXTEEN MONTHS. [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/06/24143520/FD-2406-conor-wild-youth.mp3"][/audio] The gig will take place at Royal Hospital Kilmainham Dublin on Saturday July 3rd. It will be the country's first music festival in almost 16 months. The event will have a capacity of 3,500 in pods. 500 free tickets have been set aside for frontline health care workers as a gesture of thanks for their hard work and dedication during the pandemic. Rapid testing will take place beforehand with social distancing at 1 metre during the concert. Denise Chaila, Sharon Shannon, Wyvern Lingo and Lyra are also set to perform with Gavin James topping the bill and The 2 Johnnies doing MC duties on the day.

I have only recently discovered it as I get my head wrapped around ever evolving technologies. I have Celtic ancestry, grew up in Australia, and feel so connected with my heritage when i listen to your show. I like the Celtic Rain track in your latest podcast and discovered a typo/problem with the link to their website. The link address should be celticrainmusic.com. Hope this helps in the future." Jeremy Graves emailed "Hi, Marc! I've been listening to your show for just a few weeks, but I really love it! I started listening to stay awake while feeding my now three-month-old late at night; my wife and I take shifts. As a linguist working with an indigenous group in Mexico, I really enjoy songs sung in the Celtic languages, and would love to hear more on the show! Thanks for your work! (PS I bought a Stonecircle album today, which I first heard on the podcast)." Charlton Allen asked: "What is indie Celtic?" Brooks Smith emailed on Patreon: "Hi Mark, Thanks for all the work you to do running this podcast! I don't really have any Irish heritage, but I discovered Celtic music when a friend dragged me to a contra dance in Vermont with the band Crowfoot several years ago. I love the genre, and your podcast is a great way to keep up with some of the new music that comes out. I typically listen while working during the day (I'm a structural engineer in Melbourne, Australia), and I'll have Spotify open as I do, marking songs as favourites on there as they catch my ear. I'll usually later on go listen to the rest of an artist's catalogue if I've favourited something by them. I've found a few new favourite artists that way - West of Eden, Heather Dale, Childsplay, Skipinnish. Anyway, I'm gradually working my way through your back catalogue of episodes, but one sub-group I've not heard much of yet is Cape Breton artists: Barra MacNeils, Rawlins Cross, Rankin Family, Ashley MacIsaac, and Natalie MacMaster are some of my other favourite Celtic bands! Cheers!"

A pleasure to welcome musical force of nature, Other Voices presenter and all-round legend Mary-Kate Geraghty to the co-hosting hot seat. Fun is had, cans are cracked, and there’s also room for more serious discussion in a newsworthy week for all things music. ACT ONE Dave regales us with tales of his jaunt to London for a Billie Eilish gig (he saw a Union Jack cushion, basically). His hotel was two doors down from the venue, but how close was it to Shattered Dreams Parkway? We find out. We also have an early pow-wow about Solange’s When I Get Home. It’s a mood of an album and so is Craig, apparently. ACT TWO Time-travelling hijinks prior to, and live from, the Choice Music Prize. ACT THREE With the world having lost the iconic and beloved Keith Flint, we pay tribute. Closer to home, we parse the Twitter storm whipped up by Ed Power’s stinging Wyvern Lingo comments. From there, it’s all Brian May raging against the media machine, cloud macchiatos with Ariana Grande and Kanye West’s Sunday service. ACT FOUR Songs Of The Week sees the Jonas Brothers giving us a dose of purity ring pop nostalgia, Mac DeMarco angering Mitski fans while appealing to Mary-Kate, and more. ACT FIVE She’s been on the cusp of pop stardom for some time, so has rising Norwegian artist Sigrid capitalised with her long-playing debut? Sucker Punch is our Album Of The Week. Of course, we'll have our fellow Bray-head, mate and singer/musician/activist/giant ride, Karen Cowley from Wyvern Lingo joining in on the convo too. PS. If you don't know them, check them out HERE - they're really very good.
