It's pretty crazy, this episode marks the first episode of the season to feature a country I've yet to experience. South Africa is a nation full of history, home to over 60 million people, and is one of the most culturally diverse places on earth (12 languages are spoken regionally throughout South Africa). Along with these attributes, the music and art of South Africa is also profoundly rich; with artists constantly striving to explore their truth regardless of their circumstance. I've been privileged to witness the vigorous creativity of South African artists while working with them here in New York and getting to share a bit of that with you is a massive honor. Joining me today are four artists who're exemplary of the uniqueness of South Africa, my friend Jean-Philip Grobler of the band St. Lucia (3:13), Desire Marea (44:03), Yugen Blakrok (1:17:57), and HONEYMOAN (1:54:54). Also, next week I'll be dropping a radio broadcast that goes along with this episode. The playlist for that will be full of striking South African artists who're out of this world. That radio broadcast will be dropping on August 8th and you'll find that only on Spotify. Intro song prod. by WAVY.
Yugen Blakrok & Kanif The Jhatmaster - "Pedestal," a 2022 single on I.O.T. Records. Hailing from the Eastern Cape, rapper Yugen Blackrok shot to stardom with her 2013 debut album Return of the Astro-Goth, landing three nominations in the South African Hip-Hop Awards for Best Lyricist, Best Newcomer, and Best Female Artist. Here in the States, she was a stand-out on 2018's Black Panther: The Album, appearing on the track "Opps" alongside heavy-hitters Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples. Earlier this year, she returned with the single "Pedestal," which finds her reunited with long-time producer Kanif the Jhatmaster. In a press release, she states: Concepts. Idols. Civilizations. We build and we destroy. ‘Pedestal' is about building oneself and breaking the mould. Growing, expanding and still remaining true to the spark. The pedestal is a physical framework for the senses. Civilization after civilization, it carries the weight of great symbols and the foundation of cultural and social edifices.

Yugen Blakrok doesn't incorporate hip hop's boom-bap style, she has no interest in being the Queen of SA rap, she does not do trap, and she is not interested in being boxed into someone's idea of a conscious MC. Her music has been described as “a mix of sci-fi soundscapes & meditative melodies”. It's definitely introspective and speaks to you on several levels. It blends references to places, times, & themes both inside and outside of South Africa and contains spiritual references that borrow from diverse spiritual systems Yugen Blakrok was born in the Eastern Cape and later moved to Johannesburg, the heart of South Africa’s music industry. She released her 1st album Return of the Astro-Goth in 2013 and her second album, Anima Mysterium, which contains a cameo by Chuck D in 2019. In 2018, she featured on the track “Opps” with Vince Staples & Kendrick Lamar on the Black Panther soundtrack. In this interview, she engages in thought-provoking dialogue with our students who really connected with her music, which transcends a lot of boundaries. Yugen's music does not just belong to South Africa but has universal messages that connect on human levels. Additionally, she spoke to us about being a socially conscious artist without the need to declare it, but being socially conscious by being it, not necessarily saying it. The conversation is moderated by Mikal Amin of Words Beats & Life. We're joined at the very end by Phiwokuhle Mnyandu, who teaches Zulu at Howard University. HIPHOCALYPSE Fort-Knights was a radio show first produced on the campus of Rhodes University in South Africa in 1999, and made available on podcasting platforms in 2006. The podcast ran for about three years, releasing more than 20 episodes, some of which can still be heard on Podomatic. HIPHOCALYPSE Fort-Knights was the first regularly produced podcast on African hip hop. The show was the only place to get a variety of music from MCs across Africa, featuring early music from artists like Blitz the Ambassador, HHP, K’Naan, M.anifest, Modenine, and Yugen Blakrok. The show was also pioneering in that it played hip hop from all over Africa, from major hip hop scenes like South Africa to lesser-known hip hop scenes like Equatorial Guinea. The show was on podcasting platforms before most hip hop artists in Africa had a solid social media presence, and before podcasting became part of hip hop culture. While today there are streaming services, like PEPR Radio, there is still a void in terms of podcasts one can download to hear what’s happening with hip hop across Africa. In this episode I talk to Sensai T8, one of the founders of HIPHOCALYPSE Fort-Knights, about the show’s start and its evolution into a podcast. We discuss some of the artists that appeared on the show’s playlist, and the show’s legacy in documenting African hip hop during that period in time. Sensai T8 can be found on Instagram at @SensaitateContinue reading

From her two incredible albums to her feature on the Black Panther soundtrack with Kendrick Lamar & Vince Staples, South African rapper Yugen Blakrok's musical output is incredibly powerful and wide-ranging. This was a truly fascinating and enlightening conversation, and I think there's a lot to learn from Yugen's words, experiences and thoughts that she shared. We talk Yugen's thoughts, processes & life in music. Honestly, hearing what Yugen has to say about music has completely changed my perspective about making music entirely. It was amazing to be able to make this episode, so I really hope you enjoy this special episode of SamCast.

Yugen Blakrok is a critically-acclaimed hip-hop artist who hails from the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Her occult-flavored rhymes draw from world mythology and an eclectic blend of various spiritual systems, while sounding entirely unique and future-forward. Her 2013 album, Return of the Astro-Goth caught the attention of musical maestros such as Chuck D, who makes a cameo appearance on her newest album, Anima Mysterium (2019). Many might recognize her from her blazing performance on the Black Panther soundtrack via the song “Opps” which she did in collaboration with Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples. Yugen has toured throughout South Africa and Europe, and has opened for hip-hop icons such as MC Lyte and performed alongside such legends as Public Enemy. Her music is a mix of sci-fi soundscapes, meditative melodies, and trip-hop beats thanks in large part to her collaborator, Kanif the Jhatmaster, who also makes an appearance during the interview. On this episode, Yugen discusses the occult elements of her songs, her lifelong quest to balance shadow and light, and how she’s used music as medicine during tumultuous times.Pam also speaks about the sacred practice of reconciling opposite forces for Spring Equinox, and answers a listener question about participating in a ritual to help with the coronavirus. Our sponsors for this episode are Ethereal Visions Publishing, Foxglove Pharm, BetterHelp, and Mithras Candle

Every other year since I started Chocolate Grinding, I've done a Halloween mix. The past three were called Day of the Dead: The Halloween Hangover Mix, Devil's Night 2015, and The World's A Graveyard and Every Day Is Halloween. This one's called Day of the Dead: The Remake, because I sampled some of the same vinyl I used for the first mix. Also, presumably, with the holiday falling on a Thursday this year, a lot of people will be attending Halloween parties during the Day of the Dead festival. Thirdly, I was going for more of a funny-scary mood this time around, like a bad-good remake with extra schlocky special effects. Thanks to Geng a.k.a. King Vision Ultra, Ryan Graveface of Marshmallow Ghosts, Andy Koufax, billy woods and Blockhead, Spaghetti Blacc, and Seth Graham for throwing me tracks to use on this mix. The King Vision Ultra demo is for an upcoming project with Sour Spirit, the Marshmallow Ghosts track is out now on limited-edition vinyl, Andy Koufax's "Issues" is an unreleased beat, the billy woods and Blockhead demo is an unreleased cut from 2015, Craymen's "Succulent Manila Tamarind" will be on an upcoming album, and Seth Graham's demo is an unreleased fragment. As always, the rest of the songs on here are from albums released this year. Lastly, if you've enjoyed this and/or any of my Halloween mixes, some credit is due to former Infinity Records employee Damien. Yes, that's actually his name. If you ever went to Infinity around this time of year in the late 2000s or early 2010s, you might've caught him making Halloween mixes or demo-ing them on the store's stereo system. I haven't seen the guy since he stopped working there, and I don't have any of those mixes, but they were a big inspiration nonetheless. I hope you enjoy it. Happy Halloween! On Fresh is the Word, we like to deliver wisdom through great stories from the minds of bright creatives of pop culture. Through those stories, we like to dissect the journey of our guests and present actionable lessons and advice for our listeners no matter what career or avenue of artistry they pursue. The guest for this episode is South African MC Yugen Blakrok, who released her sophomore album Anima Mysterium earlier this year that featured Kool Keith, BRAVESTARR, Historian Himself, Fifi The RaiBlaster. With Kanif The Jhatmaster on production for the entire album, their chemistry is unparalleled with a sound that takes a nod to old school trip hop. During our chat in which Kanif was also present, we talked about her musical influences, her visuals, the shadow universes she's creating, the South African music scenes, their artistic freedoms, the South African society and culture, how their upbringing influenced their art, the truths of South African history, the spirituality of the South African people, and social hierarchies. This month we speak with Johannesburg-based MC, Yugen Blakrok. Yugen Black is a South African MC, who was recently featured on the Black Panther soundtrack. Her style is distinctive and blends several different elements together in a strong lyrical flow. Her music do not contain many of the topics often found in hip hop that is heavy with braggadocio, or sexuality. In Yugen Blakrok’s music you mind find references to her Xhosa identity, Asian martial arts (ala Wu Tang), or to Black consciousness ideas and figures. Her flows sound like layered streams of consciousness, and do not fit neatly into one adjective. In this episode we speak with her about her music career, her unique style, her 2013 album Return of the Astro-Goth, her most recent work on the Black Panther soundtrack, and her upcoming projects.
