Note: This episode contains descriptions of violence and suicide and may not be appropriate for all listeners. In 1989, Chuck Stuart called 911 on his car phone to report a shooting. He said he and his wife were leaving a birthing class at a Boston hospital when a man forced him to drive into the mixed-race Mission Hill neighborhood and shot them both. Stuart's wife, Carol, was seven months pregnant. She would die that night, hours after her son was delivered by cesarean section, and days later, her son would die, too.Stuart said he saw the man who did it: a Black man in a tracksuit. Within hours, the killing had the city in a panic, and Boston police were tearing through Mission Hill looking for a suspect.  For a whole generation of Black men in Mission Hill who were subjected to frisks and strip searches, this investigation shaped their relationship with police. “Murder in Boston” - An Interview with Adrian Walker (Bonus Episode) On October 23, 1989, 29-year-old Charles Stuart placed a 911 call to report that he and his wife, Carol, had been carjacked, driven to a secluded section of the city, robbed, and shot.   A city-wide manhunt for the assailant began.  But, from the start, police were suspicious about Charles Stuart's story.  Stuart was gravely wounded, but his wife, seven months pregnant with their first child, died, as did their unborn baby. The series of events that unfolded afterward would captivate the city of Boston and the nation.  A new podcast produced by the Boston Globe and presented in association with HBO MAX titled “Murder in Boston” revisits this true crime case and provides never-before-heard details of the crime, the perpetrator, and the havoc it wreaked on the city of Boston. Adrian Walker was a new reporter working for the Boston Globe at the time Charles Stuart's 911 call shook the city.  It's a story that has resonated with him personally as a journalist and a citizen of Boston.  He hosts the new podcast “Murder in Boston” and, along with a team of Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporters, unveils explosive new findings that change the narrative of a story long cemented in the city's lore.  I'm pleased to share my conversation with Adrian Walker about this fascinating case in this bonus episode.  Links: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO79iP69FaZNQ5FmDBsrVbvuM5qV-wwUs https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/murder-in-boston-podcast/id1718579735 CrimeCon - www.crimecon.com - Use discount code ONCE for 10% off your registration.

On Making Peace Visible, we are always questioning the mantra, if it bleeds, it leads. Boston's Charles Stuart murder case is a classic example of what can go horribly wrong when you follow that mantra.    Charles Stuart was a father-to-be from the suburbs of Boston. Shortly after attending a birthing class in the city with his wife, Carol, Charles Stuart placed a 911 call. The couple had both been shot in their car. Stuart said a Black man pulled the trigger. Carol died from her injuries the next day. She and Charles were white, and the reaction from authorities was worlds away from what usually happened when a Black person was shot in Boston. Mayor Ray Flynn asked the police commissioner to assign every available detective to the case. Police immediately began raiding the homes of Black residents and conducting strip searches of young Black men in the Mission Hill area. With TV news playing and replaying the 911 call and a photo of the Stewarts bleeding on the front page of the Boston Herald the next day, a media circus ensued. But two months later - when Charles Stuart died by jumping off a bridge – it quickly became clear he was in fact the killer. This episode, we're joined by Adrian Walker, an associate editor and columnist at the Boston Globe who was a rookie reporter there at the time of the Stuart case. Walker headed up a team of investigative reporters who recently revisited this story in a new and fascinating way. In the podcast Murder in Boston, and web series Nightmare in Mission Hill, investigative reporters at the Globe brought new evidence to light – like law enforcement officials who knew about Stuart's guilt, but kept quiet. The podcast and the report also give voice to the family of Willie Bennett, the Black man who was the Boston police's prime suspect. In this retelling, Walker – who hosts the podcast, – and other journalists discuss the media's shortcomings in covering the Charles Stuart story, and how the news reports often fanned the flames of racial tension around it. The project also offers a blueprint for how journalists can help bring about healing following community trauma. Listen to the podcast, Murder in BostonRead the web series, Nightmare in Mission HillThis episode was edited by Faith McClure, and we had production help from Kristin Nelson. It was a crime story that shook Boston. The survivor of a fatal carjacking said his pregnant wife was murdered by an unknown Black man - triggering an unprecedented police crackdown in Black neighborhoods still dealing with the racial legacy of bussing. The city's spotty track record on civil rights fueled police, politicians, and the media too eager to believe a fiction wrapped in racism. But even after it was revealed to be a hoax - and that Charles Stuart staged the death of his wife - the damage to the community could not be undone.  The “Murder in Boston Podcast” by The Boston Globe is a companion to, but separately produced from, the HBO series of the same name. Hosted by editor Adrian Walker, the podcast digs into the Charles Stuart case from a local point of view, going deeper into its many threads. It takes a critical look at the city's racial backstory, flaws in the investigation, and the indiscriminate targeting of Black men - as well as the failures of its own newspaper. It even uncovers new information about who knew ahead of time that Stuart was the culprit.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "MURDER IN BOSTON PODCAST" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 10 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: pothole committed. On October11, 2012, I began recording a new series that will soon begin airing on Discerning Hearts with Dr. Adrian Walker, which we recorded at "Casa Balthasar", a house of discernment for men located in Rome, Italy, where he was offering instruction. Adrian served as the English translator of Pope Benedict XVI's book "Jesus of Nazareth" . With the historic events occurring with the Synod on the New Evangelization and start of the Year of Faith, we took some time aside to discuss the book and the influence of our Holy Father. The post IP-Encore – Dr. Adrian Walker – “Jesus of Nazareth” and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on Inside the Pages with Kris McGregor appeared first on Discerning Hearts Catholic Podcasts.

Introduction We have not seen anything close to the truth with the vast majority of the Breonna Taylor agenda-driven images, soundbites and analyses that wash over us multiple times a day. Truth is the most marginalized voice of all. The vast majority of us want true justice, and a permanent, united peace. In order to know that peace, we need to have the facts--all the facts and nothing but the facts--facts will lead us to the truth. Only the truth can lead us to true justice.  That is the subject of today’s 10-minute episode.  Continuing How many of us have been told that Breonna Taylor was murdered in her bed while sleeping? And then told that a systemically racist police force could do that to any random Black person at any time?  That is a lie, intentionally designed to increase the fear and anger among Blacks, and anybody who believes that lie, toward the police specifically and White society in general. And people understandably believe that lie because they want to trust their news sources. Destruction, more deaths and a further divided and angry country are the inevitable and desired result. Let’s look at what really happened. The No-Knock Warrant. When the police applied for a warrant to search Taylor's apartment, they also asked for four other warrants to be served near simultaneously: one for a suspected "trap house" allegedly operated by Jamarcus Glover and Adrian Walker (no relation to Kenneth Walker) at 2424 Elliott Avenue, two for vacant homes near that address, and one for a suspected stash house on West Muhammad Ali Boulevard. Judge Mary Shaw approved all five warrants. There was sufficient evidence connecting Taylor to her previous boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover, to issue the warrant for Taylor's address. Drugs were found when the separate warrant was served on Glover, and he was arrested that same night. The police decided before the raid to serve the No-Knock Warrant at Taylor’s address as a Knock Warrant. Evidence presented to the Grand Jury showed the police knocked and announced who they were more than once before entering.  Video shows that Officer Brett Hankison was agitated before they used a battering ram on the door to enter.  A fellow Officer was trying to calm Hankison down even before they entered. Getting no response to their knocking and announcing, the three officers, Hankison along with Sergeant Jonathan Mattingly and Detective Myles Cosgrove, entered Taylor’s apartment following the use of the battering ram. Breonna and her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, had left their bedroom, and entered the hallway. Walker said that he had not heard any knocking or announcing, and fired his legal gun at what he thought was an intruder, striking Detective Mattingly in the leg. Mattingly and Cosgrove returned fire, killing Taylor who was standing near Walker. Analysis showed that Cosgrove had fired the shot that killed Ms. Taylor. The agitated Officer Hankison fired 10 shots which entered  nearby apartments. Hankison was correctly charged by the Grand Jury with three counts of wanton endangerment, each carrying a sentence of up to 5 years. Officer Hankison was fired last June, and Mattingly and Cosgrove have been on administrative duties. Mattingly and Cosgrove were, also correctly, not charged for returning fire. Kentucky Attorney General, David Cameron (photo), went to some length to tell everyone the Grand Jury had done its job well, and pleaded for people, especially celebrities, not to stir up negative reactions with misleading information. But much of the media are filled with people reacting to just that--deliberately false information. That is not only wrong, but downright dangerous. Think of how many people actually believe that the cops simply barged into Ms. Taylor’s apartment, opened fire, and killed her in her bed. Lies like this one tear at the fabric of an already torn society, add fuel to the race fires, and influence elections.  “Skinfolk, not kinfolk.

A woman who's widely referred to as the “original Dreamer” weighs in on the current moment in immigration. A young man shares a tale of rising above poverty, homelessness, and undocumented status. Plus, does Boston deserve its racist reputation, and what's being done to move beyond it? We discuss takeaways from the Boston Globe's series on racism with columnist Adrian Walker. We get a critical look at offshore wind from across the pond, and rethink a potato-focused school break. Tereza Lee, center, protests in New York City on Wednesday. Lee – whose parents brought her to the U.S. as a child without documents – reached out to Sen. Richard Durbin about her family’s status as a teenager. Durbin would go on to introduce the DREAM Act in Congress.  (Courtesy Tereza Lee) They Had a Dream This week, the fate of young immigrants across New England has been at the center of a Washington political debate over DACA — or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. And, they've been a chip in a bigger political fight over keeping the government open. At stake is whether these so-called “Dreamers” – who were brought to the country illegally by their parents years ago – will be allowed to stay, or be forced to return to countries many of them don’t consider home. The movement behind the DREAM Act began nearly 20 years ago when an undocumented teenager in Chicago wrote to her senator. WBUR’s Shannon Dooling sat down with Tereza Lee, the woman  known as the original “Dreamer.” Saul Grullon, a native of the Dominican Republic, was abused by his parents because of his sexuality. (Beth Reynolds|Joyce Showyra/ NEPR) While Tereza Lee grew up with the fear of being separated from her family, Dominican-born Saul Grullon sought refuge from his family in the immigration system. Grullon come out to his family as gay when he was a teenager living in New Jersey, and he encountered such hostility that it felt dangerous to stay at home. Grullon was undocumented, but he was able to apply for a temporary visa through VAWA — the Violence Against Women Act. He told his moving story for New England Public Radio's “Words in Transit” project. Is Boston Racist? About a year ago, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh took a staunchly pro-immigrant stand in the face of President Trump's executive order pledging to strip funding from so-called “sanctuary cities.” Walsh said that people fearing deportation could live at city hall, if they wanted. Other cities in the greater Boston metropolitan area also promised to do what they could to protect immigrants. But there's another group whose members don't always feel welcome in Boston: African Americans. Saturday Night Live cast member Michael Che brought up this sentiment before last year's Superbowl — when the Patriots played against the Atlanta Falcons. Sport and race have long been a sore spot in the city, but the history goes much deeper. Protests and riots around court-ordered school desegregation in the 1970s were a particularly ugly time for African Americans in Boston — one that's left lasting scars. “I remember riding the buses to protect the kids going up to South Boston High School. And the bricks through the window. Signs hanging out those buildings, ‘Nigger Go Home.’ Pictures of monkeys. The words. The spit. People just felt it was all right to attack children.” – bus safety monitor Jean McGuire, a speaking with WBUR in 2014. Bill Russell experienced discrimination as the only black member of the Boston Celtics during the 1956-1957 season, his rookie year. The Boston Globe’s Spotlight Team is known for investigations into issues like political corruption and sex abuse in the Catholic Church. Last fall the investigative unit took on what they call their most difficult question yet: Does Boston deserve its reputation as a racist city –and a place that's unfriendly to blacks in particular? Their reporting series “Boston. Racism. Image. Reality” was published in print and online in December. Our guest Adrian Walker is a columnist for the Metro section of the Boston Globe. Walker is part of the team behind the Spotlight series, where he wrote about professional sports and fan culture. Winds of Change Fisherman Steve Barratt is aboard his boat Razorbill in the Ramsgate harbor in southeast England. Barratt says he’s lost valuable fishing ground to a wind farm in the Thames Estuary. (Chris Bentley/WBUR) We've reported on plans to build wind farms in the waters off Massachusetts’ South Shore and in the Atlantic south of Long Island, and the opposition by some fishermen to those plans. But right now, aside from a small array of turbines off the coast of Rhode Island, the worries are theoretical. To get a sense of how big wind farms might affect fishing in New England’s future, WBUR reporter Chris Bentley visited fishermen working near giant wind farms in the United Kingdom. If jobs in the new energy economy are seen as part of a growth industry, many in traditional farming communities have seen their way of life shrinking. Carson (left) and Kyle Flewelling, pictured in 2014, worked 12-hour days on their family farm in Easton during harvest break, spading up about 700 acres of russets for the fry and chip markets. (Jennifer Mitchell/ Maine Public In Maine's northern Aroostook County the acreage for potato farming has shrunk over the last 50 years, and technology has reduced the demand for labor. That's a big deal for high school students there, who have traditionally taken a three-week break from classes each fall to harvest potatoes. With far fewer teenagers now working in the fields, the school board in the town of Presque Isle is looking at a new approach that could end the tradition of the October break, and bring the harvest into the classroom. Maine Public Radio’s Robbie Feinberg reports. About NEXT NEXT is produced at WNPR. Adrian Walker is the founder of Boataffair, which matches boat owners with charter clients. He’s using modern technology to make boat ownership more affordable and boat rental more accessible. Adrian is the first guest in this week’s show. He spoke to Boat Radio while on holiday in the south of France. When it comes to ocean conservation, education does not work and the money should be spent instead on ad campaigns aimed at changing attitudes. That’s just one of the controversial views aired by Dr Stefan Harzen (pictured) of the Taras Oceanographic Foundation when he sat down with Sarah O’Kelly for a fascinating interview. Stefan has dedicated his life to the study of dolphins and runs the Palm Beach Dolphin Project, right on Sarah’s doorstep in south Florida. Sarah O’Kelly is the creator and operator of Skipper’s Review, a superb online review and recommendation platform for boaters everywhere.
