I got the chance to talk to author of the Orion's Spur series, Alan Hansen about the first book in his series, Demeter and I had a lot of fun! I could talk to this guy for hours, but I think he has something really enjoyable and important going on with this series. Like we discussed, its important to read for a good laugh and a smile, but if we can shine a little light on something as detrimental as bullying? All the better!

It's 20 years since the death of the scout responsible for finding some of the greatest players in Liverpool's history. Geoff Twentyman joined Bill Shankly's Liverpool in 1967 as chief scout, tasked with overhauling the club's recruitment system.Armed with his scouting diary, he unearthed lower league players who would later on go to be world beating superstars, including Kevin Keegan, Alan Hansen and Ian Rush. His two decades as chief scout contributed to the most successful period in the club's history - as they won 9 titles, 6 domestic cups and 6 European cups. In March 2024, a plaque celebrating Geoff along with the rest of 'the boot room boys' was unveiled outside Liverpool's Anfield stadium. Bob Paisley OBE  was an English professional football manager and player who played as a wing-half. He spent almost 50 years with Liverpool and is regarded, due to his achievements with the club, as one of the greatest British managers of all time. Rob talks about this icon in this episode with essential lessons that can be used from the great mans career.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Bob Paisley followed Bill Shankly into the manager position at Liverpool. In 1974 after the FA Cup Final win and Bob was offered the job he initially refused it. Bob was not a great communicator according to a significant number of players, so much so that his team talks were faltering and littered with forgotten names.    He recruited Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen and Graham Souness, three of the top players around at that time. His success was largely due to his trust in his team, his knowledge of the people he worked with and his drive to constantly improve.  BEST MOMENTS   ‘There's so much to talk about with Bob, although it could be said that he was a very simple man. I'm not actually sure whether Bob would have been as successful now as he was in his own time.' ‘There was almost an air of the players making it up themselves and its absolutely phenomenal.' ‘The thing that goes through all this, that created his success is that he  knew the game so well, he knew players and he knew what players could do and what he wanted.' ‘I thinks its an example of Bob's and Liverpool's belief in themselves and the way that they were doing it and I think the success that they were having at that time.'   VALUABLE RESOURCES   Leader Manager Coach Podcast      ABOUT THE HOST   Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. He has worked in the football industry in Europe, USA and Africa; at International, Premiership, League, Non-League and grassroots levels with both World Cup and European Championship experience Rob Ryles prides himself on having a forward thinking and progressive approach to the game built through his own experience as well as lessons learned from a number of highly successful managers and coaches. In this March & April episode the full suite of seven engage in an unexpected discussion comparing Warlord and GW's "Contrast"/ "Speed" paints that occasionally veers into actual proper wargaming podcast territory at times. Keeping with this unusual approach there is also a bit of a chat about 3D printing and the gentle wave of retirements washing across the traditional manufacturers and retailers in the historical space, and what that may mean for the hobby in the short and medium term. Fortunately this proper content is more than counterbalanced by an episode of World of Wor-Wor-War Sports punditry and analysis as we are joined by Roy Keane, Micah Richards and Alan Hansen to try and predict the winners of the upcoming 15mm ADLG competition at Roll Call 2022. This week, we were lucky enough to speak with Dr. Alan Hansen, a therapist at Canyon Counseling Center. We brought Dr. Hansen on to talk with us about something that's been increasingly on the minds of many over the last few years — the intersection of our faith and mental health. We felt that he really was the perfect person to talk about this with given his professional work as a therapist and his service in the Church, where he's served twice as a Bishop and is currently the Stake President of a Young Single Adult stake in Utah County. He has a Masters Degree in Counseling and Guidance and a PhD in Counseling Psychology, both from BYU.Alan brought so many insights to the table. Just as a few quick examples he shared:why it's much healthier to focus first on healthy relationships as opposed to personal righteousness for its own sakehow emotions like pain, shame, and fear can benefit or harm ushow repentance can be seen as positive and upliftingand the how we can tell the difference between feeling anxiety and feeling the SpiritAnd beyond just these specifics, he brought with him some general principles that were really paradigm-shifting for us — we'll let him explain in the episode, but we can't wait for you to hear his common framework for approaching nearly all of these issues.

Those words were uttered by Alan Hansen in the mid-90s when Man Utd had a young side bristling with the talent of Beckham, Scholes,  and the Neville brothers and whilst the likes of Pring, Massengo, Bakinson and Conway are not quite in the same league ability wise I saw enough in that last 30 minutes against Celtic to invigorate my enthusiasm for the coming season.  For me the more experienced line up that featured for the first hour brought back memories of last season and who would argue that the game in its later stages was played at a pace that had been lacking early on. In this episode Headhunter, DaveFevs, Ian & Mark review the performances of individuals and formation whilst assessing who would or would not be a loss if they were no longer here by the end of the transfer window. In 1994 four teenage boys in Sunderland – all students from the same school – died one after another, with their bodies found for the most part in burning sheds or derelict buildings with ligatures around their neck. The police insisted nothing sinister was going on.              A lot of true crime shows will at some point say “this sounds like something out of a horror movie” – but that is a horror movie, right? Tonight we look at the case of Steven Grieveson – aka (but not by us) as The Sunderland Strangler - the only North East serial killer of the modern era. Gareth expresses his love for Bush, Curry and Beer. John solves the thorny problem of how  footballers can continue with their career after prison sentences. Claire believes that the musical career of Ant and Dec is more significant  than the Rwandan genocide. Listeners hear the words “beaver anuses” a lot.Digressions in this episode include: Ensemble charity singles! The death of Stephen Milligan MP! The death of Andreas Escobar and Alan Hansen's startlingly inappropriate response! Gary Rhodes! Alice Beer! Swearing on Farscape! Rednex! Jewish Eggs! Spiderland by Slint (DON'T LISTEN TO IT)! The Elongated Man!  Hans Zimmer!  Everyone Dies in Sunderland explores some of the darkest moments of North East history, and includes jokes. These jokes will never be at the expense of victims or their families and will always be at the expense of people who deserve to be mocked, robbed of their power and shown up for the idiots they really are. If you're easily offended or personally connected to the events we're discussing though, you probably shouldn't listen.  During this episode John suggests that we allow serial killer nicknames if they make the killers sound ridiculous. So Peter Sutcliffe is now “the dangly willy killer” in tribute to his iconic homemade underpants. Any other suggestions? He is a committee member of the Liverpool fans pressure group Spirit of Shankly and just to keep busy over the years he has written a couple of books and put out a documentary on the Casuals. The second half of the conversation kicks off with Andrew and Peter chatting about the importance of supporters pressure groups such as the Celtic Trust and the Spirit of Shankly as we wait for European Super League and the influence of Billionaire owners. The Spirit of Shankly were inspired by the Green Brigade to support local foodbanks and Peter and the group have also been up to Celtic to check out the Standing Section in Celtic Park. The second part of the chat floats between music, football and life and Peter explains how the sound the band created for the Spartacus album caught on and how football and music mixed to create the sound of The Farm and the image they created from terrace fashion and the influence it would have on the bands that followed them. Peter chats about the friendly rivalry with the Happy Mondays and their hilarious Trip to Tipp, festival in Ireland and a session after the sound check and the shenanigans that followed before, during and after the gig. Having followed Liverpool around England and Europe all his life, Peter stopped going into Anfield after Greame Souness gave an interview to The Sun on the anniversary of Hillsborough.Peter also touches on how some Liverpool fans were unhappy with Souness joining Rangers and are unhappy that Steven Gerard took the manager's job at Ibrox.Hillsborough is discussed and the Celtic v Liverpool game that followed and listeners can hear the pain in Peter's voice as he remembers that day and what followed that traumatic experience.Peter also turned out for Celtic alongside Jimmy Johnstone against Liverpool in a charity game before Ian Rush's testimonial and he recalls how Jimmy wouldn't pass the ball to him and Alan Hansen wouldn't let him go by him but he did get to perform with The Farm at half time and he also speaks about returning to Glasgow to play on the Justice Tour with Mick Jones and Glasvegas. Gerry Conlon and Paddy Hill were at the gig that night and they know a thing or two about Justice!Peter jumps in the Celtic Soul Podcast Time Machine and travels back to a Liverpool game in Europe v St. Etienne and into the Kop where he still stands to watch his team. The story behind the song “All Together Now” is brought to life and Peter gives his opinion on the soldiers of World War 1 and the Poppy Fascism that has followed. We had the very great pleasure of welcoming a true Albion legend to the pod, in fact probably The Albion’s best ever player to date. He was at the heart of our rise to the top flight in ‘79 and was a rock at the back in our formative years at England’s top football table. After shining with his dazzling breaks from the back as a roving central defender in his time at The Goldstone he stepped on to even greater heights, winning the very best club trophies available with the Titans that were Liverpool FC, forming a formidable partnership with Alan Hansen. In recent years he’s been a regular pundit on BBC TV and radio but today he took time to speak to Russ, Pete, Andy B and Robin. He is Mark Lawrenson!

The final leg of the Irish League Marathon concludes with this absolute belter from a legend of the Premier League and Northern Ireland. Former Liverpool, Southampton, Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town midfielder Jim Magilton joins me on Campbell's Footballs to discuss his time in football. We open our chat by hearing about Jim's influences particularly George Best and Norman Whiteside. We then hear about Jim's playing days starting out at Liverpool - meeting another one of his hero's Kenny Dalglish. What was it like playing with Alan Hansen and others? We then hear about Jim's time on the international stage. What was it like sharing with Neil Lennon and Ian Dowie? Here about an incredible story about how how a shock FA Cup win over Leeds with Oxford United ended up in Jim signing for Southampton. What was it like playing at the Dell and alongside Matt Le Tissier and other great players? A move to Hillsborough follows after an incredible time on the south coast. Coming face to face to Benito Carbone and Paolo Di Canio - how did that go? Then, a move to Ipswich. How did George Burley sell the dream of playing at Portman Road? Matt Holland and teammates such as Richard Wright, James Scowcroft and Lee Naylor get more than a mention. How did George and his team draw influence from the team that Sir Bobby Robson managed all that years ago? Did it help them on the European stage and domestically? Jim then talks about his time in management managing at Ipswich before travelling the world and then heading back to Northern Ireland. Does he want to manage Northern Ireland in the future? We hear about his relationships with Michael O'Neill, Gareth Mcauley and Stephen Craigan as well as hear about Jim's views on the media, the Irish League and much more. Peter Hooton is back with his Allez Les Rouges podcast, a little later than usual, but with good reason, as he has been busy promoting his excellent new book, The Boot Room Boys: The Unseen Story of Anfield's Conquering Heroes. And joined by Liverpool season-ticket holders Joe Blott, and Ian Byrne, of Fans Supporting Foodbanks, they kick off another enjoyable show by talking about the book’s launch event, where the last member of the fabled Boot Room, Roy Evans, had the packed-out crowd hanging on his every word.Times have changed, and not just at Liverpool, but the lads can see similarities in the single-mindedness of Jurgen Klopp and the great man who created the Boot Room. While there have been comparisons between Virgil van Dijk and Alan Hansen, Peter reckons the Dutchman could be for Klopp what Ron Yeats was for Bill Shankly.Liverpool are hoping the centre-back is fit for the second part of the double-header with Chelsea later today, but while Peter and Co believe the performance in the Carabao Cup defeat underlined why the Reds now have serious strength in depth, they feel there is one player - and not van Dijk - who simply needs to play every game.Xherdan Shaqiri’s display in midweek is hailed but the panel argue the Swiss winger is still more effective coming off the bench.Eden Hazard produced a devastating cameo coming on for Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday night but Peter, Joe and Ian believe we will see the best of Liverpool’s front three this afternoon and that a match against his former club could be the one that sees Mohamed Salah’s season truly come alive. The podcast rounds off by highlighting the important work that is being done in the city by Fans Supporting Foodbanks, and a little bit about the group's special guest at last weekend’s win over Southampton, Jeremy Corbyn.
