Archaeological evidence reveals a close relationship between people and the spiritual world back to the Bronze Age, often enacted through water. Springs often reveal ritual deposits, such as those found at the head of the Seine. It's unsurprising that humans would continue this water-based relationship via wells. For some scholars, wells had either a patron deity or a guardian spirit, which was later replaced by a saint or angel. For example, there is a suggestion that the Celtic water goddess Alauna became St Helen. But wells took on multiple functions, used to heal, curse, make wishes, and even divine. And, of course, people used them as a water source.  Let's take a look at some of these wells across the British Isles in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore. In October, we observed Mental Illness Awareness Week.  In that time I asked myself, as a society, Are we TRULY AWARE of mental illness? (Spoiler: NOOOOooo!)This month, we take the time to acknowledge and raise awareness of many different conditions we call “mental illness” like Depression, Schizophrenia, ADHD, PTSD, Dementia, Bipolar Disorder and more.  However, as I listen to society debate the many pressing issues of our current society, the widespread violence and chaos, or hypothesizing about “what's wrong with Ye?” it strikes me that we do not even have the BASIC language to fully appreciate most mental illnesses.  Every day, I hear people use language like "crazy" or "weird" to describe people who are experiencing mental health crises.  I hear misuse of words like "bipolar" to describe erratic weather, and a host of other frankly ignorant statements about emotional and mental health.   Our culture has long downplayed attention to emotions, despite them being ever-present, resulting in widespread mental health struggles that have yet to even be "named" and identified.  Our current system is woefully inadequate to address the realities of how many people need mental health support and treatment. In this episode of MYA, Dr. Alauna breaks down why a Brain, Body, Behavior anatomy lesson is KEY to truly becoming Mental Health Aware!  Learn more from be at www.dralauna.com and Follow Dr. Alauna on social media!  Donate to support DA-TRI at www.da-tri.org.Support the show

Minding Your Amygdala - A Brain, Body, Behavior Podcast

Dear friend, I'm sorry to have to tell you, but we, human beings, allaus, unfortunately, are struggling with an addiction to violence.  It's not your fault, because of the way our global society has evolved,  now in 2022, we are all caught up in a devastating cycle of trauma and addiction, fueled by one important, powerful (but short lasting) pleasure chemical, Dopamine.  American society is uniquely addicted to violence, because aggression and force has been a core principle that defined power and "right", through the entire history of our country, from before 1776 to present. In this episode of Minding Your Amygdala, Dr. Alauna breaks down why it is not only TOXIC, but dangerous for America to continue to ignore this critical public health issue, our collective addiction to violence.  We are steeped in images that depict violence: our history books, cartoons, TV shows, film, sports, comedy, politics and news have accepted and rewarded violent, dopamine-inducing words, thoughts and culture.  As we begin to accept that we have a problem, we can begin creating effective, multi-layered solutions to address our gun and violence crisis.  We no longer need to wonder what's wrong... the answer is, we are primitive and addicted to our biological impulses.  Yet, there is a way to heal...Let's all do our individual healing work to break the trauma cycle.  Learn more with Dr. Alauna at The Trauma C.U.R.E. - Creators using Radical Empathy, June 22-24th!#ChooseLOVE #ChoosePeace #MakeEmpathyGoViralSupport the show

"Trauma hurts. Empathy heals."  Have you wondered lately, WTF is wrong with humans?  Everywhere you look, there are traumatic events and painful reminders that we are going through an emotional, spiritual and psychological crisis.  We want answers for how to stop mass killings, political division, addiction crises and beyond, yet those answers seem slow in arriving, as we witness more and more chaos.  Yet, I do believe that there is a cure for what ails humanity, and it's available to all of us through a simple, yet profound, built in biological tool: Empathy. In this episode, Dr. Alauna makes the case for why Empathy is the key to mental health healing and explains how LOVE can heal us all!Submit questions and comments to askdralauna@gmail.comGet your Trauma C.U.R.E. : Creators Using Radical Empathy Live Virtual Event tickets HERE!!! Support the show

Minding Your Amygdala - A Brain, Body, Behavior Podcast

What is psychological trauma?  How do you know if you have experienced trauma?  What can you do about the traumas in your life?  In this episode, I break down my motto "Trauma hurts.  Empathy heals" and explain why I chose to lead with that statement.  As society begins to realize trauma as a core experience that all people share, it will help us to expand and update the way we think about psychological trauma.  MANY events cause psychological trauma, and we will take a deeper look and name some of the experiences that cause trauma.  Traumatic experiences include climate disasters, racism, sexism, medical illness, grief and loss, name calling and bullying, vehicle accidents, physical, sexual assault and beyond.  These are just a few examples of traumas, yet the good news is, trauma is treatable!Dr. Alauna also breaks down why is important to understand trauma in order to heal your own mental health, no matter what your "diagnosis" is or whether you've been "diagnosed" at all.  Trauma is an experience that affects us all.  On the next episode of the MYA podcast, Dr. A makes the case for why Empathy is the C.U.R.E. and how we can #MakeEmpathyGoViral!  Trauma hurts. Have you ever considered the anatomy of words? What are "words?"  How do these fragile yet impactful sounds affect the way we think, feel and act?  Can words be "violent?" Miscommunication is inherent in the human experience, and our current world is full of the trauma that comes from our careless use of words.  Whoever said, sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you, clearly did not know about the Somatosensory Cortex, the part of the brain that registers physical AND psychological pain!  In this episode, Dr. Alauna breaks down the power of our words, and the importance of updating your understanding of the biological process that connect us all.  And WORDS are the primary vehicle we use to interact, and our impact is certainly not matching our intent.Learn more about how empathy can heal trauma!  Join Dr. Alauna at The Trauma C.U.R.E. : Creators Using Radical Empathy, a 3 day immersive educational event.Support the show

"Oh $h!ggidy! Did you see that?!" was the common refrain from the night of the Oscars 2022.  So many of us worldwide watched in shock as Will Smith, one of the main honorees of the event, slapped Chris Rock in response to a joke told about Jada Pinkett Smith's bald head, which is due to autoimmune alopecia.  This is just one of MANY examples that we have had lately of humans behaving badly.  From airplane conduct, to road rage, to gun violence, political violence and even war, it is not your imagination that you are seeing more people act out aggressively towards others, often in responses that seem to be extreme relative to the triggers.  You may be wondering, what the heck is wrong with humans???!Dr. Alauna's answer:  We are primitive.  Humans currently run primarily on input and impulses from our most animalistic, primitive brain systems, and because we have such a poor understanding of our invisible anatomy, we have been taught to blame others, God OR the Devil (sometimes all 3!) when our emotions become intense and we act on them.  The widespread myths about emotions and ignorance about how the human brain calculates information and makes decisions is resulting in widespread chaos, and of course, major disagreements about how we view things.  In this episode of Minding Your Amygdala, Dr. Alauna breaks down The Slap with an empathetic perspective on how trauma and biology played a role in THAT situation, and how to recognize when your amygdala may be taking you down a primitive path that you don't want to experience.Learn more about Dr. Alauna at www.dralauna.com.Sign up for the Trauma Recovery Academy at www.traumarecoveryacademy.comSubmit questions to askdralauna@gmail.comSupport the show

Dr. Alauna Curry is America's only “Trauma Psychiatrist,” focused exclusively on educating people about the impact of psychological trauma on our individual and collective mental health, from a brain, body, and behavioral perspective. After graduating summa cum laude from the Xavier University of Louisiana and obtaining her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, she provided intensive trauma treatment for US Military veterans for 12 years. Yet in the midst of excelling as an Assistant Professor, studying and teaching the most evidence-based interventions available, she encountered a series of personal and professional traumas that led her to re-evaluate what she had been taught to believe about trauma. Recognizing the pervasive yet predictable patterns produced by the primitive brain, it became clear that the prevalence of trauma is grossly underestimated. We all have been, currently are, and will be impacted by psychologically traumatizing experiences. Rather than seeing this as distressing, Dr. Alauna sees it as an opportunity to eliminate the stigma of trauma, and her hope is that this transformative information will trigger an 'Empathy Evolution' in healthcare and beyond, becoming a catalyst for a healthier, peaceful human species on earth. This episode features Dr. Alauna Curry and focuses on trauma. Dr. Alauna is the Trauma Psychiatrist and now specializes in teaching empathy skills and trauma strategies in an accessible, easy to understand way, including all of the biology behind trauma responses. Whether you already identify that you have experienced trauma or not, you're going to want to listen to every single moment of this episode. I can guarantee that someone you know and most likely someone you love is dealing with trauma, so this will help you understand them or even yourself more. When we know more, we can be better and do better. Questions this episode will answer: What is trauma? How does trauma effect your body? What part of your brain is related to trauma? How does trauma relate to your mental health? What are the major areas in the brain involved in mental health? What is a review of systems? Is trauma treatable? What is trauma reactive behavior? Does self awareness take practice? What is the “LOVE” skill to deal with stress and trauma? After graduating summa cum laude from Xavier University of Louisiana and obtaining her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, she provided intensive trauma treatment for US Military veterans for 12 years. She founded the Dr. Alauna Trauma Recovery Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating psychological trauma worldwide by providing affordable public education and professional training in Empathy Skills Practice™ for Traumatized Humans, a Skills Over Pills approach to self healing and trauma recovery.

SHOW NOTES: Traumas are something most of us have to live with. Is almost impossible to avoid damaging, painful experiences in our lifetimes. However, how do we deal with them so they don't take over our lives? Should we set them aside, or should we confront them? Dr. Alauna Curry opens our eyes and gives us some insight on how our brain works in today's conversation. -- Highlights from the conversation: DR ALAUNA CURRY ● Board-Certified Psychiatrist, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of complex psychological trauma and related mental health conditions. ● Founder of Dr. Alauna Trauma Recovery Institute, an educational practice geared towards education the public about how to heal themselves ● None of us get a good education about emotions, despite it being something very basic for us humans. TRAUMA VS US ● We live long lives in this world. It's very difficult to always avoid painful experiences , which can later develop into traumas. Traumas usually restructure the way we see the world. It's important to understand that we are running on our primitive brain systems. They still dominate the way we think of, talk about, feel, and interpret the world that surrounds us. When trauma poisons our system, it takes over our vision of the world. ● Trauma creates a predictable pattern of changes in our brain system. When we identify those patterns and find the correct tools and skills, we can regulate the way trauma affects us. We can create our own reality. ● An important first step is to recognize and accept your traumas. Dismissing them won't let you reprogram the way you think, as you will be stuck in your own ways. Think of it as this: You are addicted to sugar, and you notice that you are gaining some unhealthy way. You refuse to acknowledge that the food you are eating is the one causing this, so you continue to consume it. Accepting the problem and willing to change is the only way to stop the consequences. ● Humans are built with a gigantic blind spot for ourselves. We see what everybody else is doing and we are quick to say how wrong they all are. We have solutions, suggestions, advice, etc. But when it comes to ourselves, crickets. ● The ability to regulate ourselves comes to self-acceptance and education. Thoughts have real power. Emotions are always present, but it's possible to regulate them by controlling out thought processes. We have the ability to make ourselves better. ----------- Website Address https://www.dralauna.com Social Media Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/dralauna Instagram Profile https://www.instagram.com/dralauna/ Twitter Profile https://twitter.com/dralauna ------ See you on the next one! Here are the highlights of my interview with Alauna Whelan: Inspiring the Divine Feminine on Women Developing Brilliance.Who is Alauna Whelan?Alauna is a true artist dedicated to inspiring women to sink deeper into their feminine power while treading lightly on Mother Earth in the process. She has a background in mining and minerals (both potash and uranium).Currently, she offers a handcrafted line of elemental jewelry using crystals, gemstones, and recycled fine silver. As well as botanical intention candles infused with pure essential oils.Overcoming Life's StrugglesWith the birth of her first son, Alauna experienced birth trauma. While she had hoped for a natural birth, her greatest wish was for a gentle birth with informed consent more than anything.Left in disarray and with a deep need to reclaim her life and feminity, she began to search out holistic tools like aromatherapy, homeopathy, and crystals in hopes to achieve peace and balance. From there, she started doing postpartum care for women through crafted salves and teas. Then, out of the desire to find a personal talisman and unable to find something that truly resonated she decided to create her own jewelry line.Shining a Bright LightWhelan's bravery shines through everything she shows up in.Strong experiences, birth trauma, and health crisis have given her a deep sense of maturity and a respect for life. Her authentic, self-described “no filter” way allows women to lay their masks down and softly sink into their own greatness. We're in it together. The more we can shed light on our struggles, it allows us to feel less alone. I loved my time with Alauna becauseShe also resonates with #communityovercompetition. Her “come as you are” approach and wish to really connect with people is a living example of the magic that can be created when we authentically unite.Connect with Alauna: http://alaunawhelan.com/
