One thing taken for granted is breathing. If you take time to silence the chaos and learn the art of breath, you will be on your way to mastering a healthy lifestyle. The smallest actions can give the greatest results. And breathing is one of these actions. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT However, most of us don't sit around thinking about how we breath and telling our bodies to do something that happens automatically. That's one of the greatest beauties about how our bodies work. It's these intricate details that give us the opportunity to live out our dreams. So instead of getting all bent out of shape for what you haven't done for your body and health, pause and be grateful for your breath and breathe with intention. The K.I.S.S. ~ Breathe with intention! I am not one who pretends to have it all together. I make mistakes daily. I sell my health short too. And let me tell you, the pantry is a daily struggle for me. Yet one thing I have learned over the decades is presence. Being present is SO important. And one way to do this is being in tune with your body. I think of this as creating harmony. Music has been a love for my entire life. I've always had a song in my heart and my mom would say I came out talking and singing. That is one of the greatest gifts they gave me, music. One area of music that always drew me in was harmony. And that's how I look at our bodies. We need to find the "harmony" of our bodies in the food, fitness, and function. And the first step is the most foundational one....Breath! Believe it or not, we all breathe! And there is an art to breathing. A week or so back, I found myself going out to pick up some essentials at the grocery store. This was the first outing with my mask. Now understand that I am a woman always on a mission and that morning was no different. I had an early morning meeting and interview. So there was no time to dawdle. So I made the dash into the store picking up a cart on the way. Nothing like the sunshine to kill any germs. I get in the store and my phone rings. My husband found something at home that needed my attention. As I stood there listening, I realized I was breathing harder and hotter air. I felt the mask hug my mouth and then release upon my exhale. For once, I was captivated by my own breath. (Plus this is when I realized I had a lot of hot air, which my husband has documented the day and time as it will go into the history books.) There is the art of breath and it can be extremely beneficial to the harmony of your body. So let's breathe with intention. Find a comfortable and calm place. Sit tall as if your head is being pulled up by a string. Close your eyes and relax your shoulders. Loosen the tightness throughout your body. Focus on your breath; breathing in and out slowly and controlled. As you begin to welcome this calm, your mind might drift off. Bring your focus back to your breath. Add a thought of gratitude and praise. You can do this for a few seconds just to start. It can be a weird feeling at first especially if you've never tried it. But as you do it throughout your day, extend the time. I love doing this when I get frustrated or mad, or even when I'm in a situation that I need to process more calmly than a knee-jerk reaction. The art of breath will serve your mind and body well. May harmony begin to ignite the wellbeing of your presence. "Be present. Be incredible. In episode 33 of 'The Beats', Kelly Kennedy sits down with her BioRegulatory Lifestyle Guide, Vibration Intuitive Husband ...Ian Kennedy to discuss breath. A timeless conversation for anyone, anywhere that will have us all contemplating, how we breathe. The simple mechanism we often take for granted may very well be at the core of what makes us human. For the simple fact that we are able to change our breath to induce a parasympathetic response. We have the choice to allow ourselves to get worked up and be overwhelmed or to just be and relax. It all comes back to our breath. If you don't already know Ian from The True Wellness Center or his previous appearance on The Beats Podcast Episode #18 Allowing Life to Happen. Ian has studied fields of energetic therapies for the past two decades and is now a proponent of bio regulatory medicine and on the board of the Bio-regulatory Medicine Institute. One of the most essential functions for health and wellbeing of a human is just breathing. Breathing air. In and out. In fact, we do this 25,000 times a day. Yet, as today's guest James Nestor will share, a wide majority of us have lost the ability to breathe correctly wreaking havoc on our health. But all is not lost. Modern science agrees, that even the smallest adjustments in the way we inhale and exhale can have dramatic downstream positive effects. James Nestor is a journalist who has travelled the world to find out what is going on with our breathing. He has written for Outside, Scientific American, The Atlantic, Dwell, The New York Times, and many other publications. I first discovered his work with his book Deep: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us about Ourselves which was a finalist for the 2015 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing, an Amazon Best Science Book of 2014, and more. What James has learned about the breathe to help with anxiety, asthma, sleep apnea, physical & mental performance, even rejuvenate internal organs, reverse auto-immune diseases, strengthening the immune system and so much more. Can't wait for you to dig in. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Thoughts on Brian Mackenzie and Rob Wilson podcast with Chris and James
This week's podcast is a conversation about principles and philosophies. When we started weMove 4 years ago Chris and I were fortunate enough to get to spend some time with Wim Hof at a time he was relatively unknown and the concept of breathing as a practice outside of yoga and pranayama was really in its infancy. This started us off on a journey to discover how our breath and the various techniques can support us in realising the potential we have as individuals to change for the better. That search and journey lead us to meet Brian McKenzie in the wilds of Oregon for issue 2 which you can download in digital format on our website and when we met Brian it was clear that there was more to breathing that wasn't always being explained. Brian is passionately interested about the transformative power of breathing and how it's at the centre of literally everything we do. THe word Inspire literally means 'to take breath in', so with everyone talking about being inspired they are often overlooking what that actually means, which is to breathe life into the action. And it's this philosophical side that's grounded actually in fundamental principles and that's what this podcast is about because Brian and his partner Rob Wilson have created the Art of Breath, a principles-based approach to breathwork, demystifying a lot of the more mystical elements of breathing and passing on the principles so everyone has the tools to really bring about a fundamental upgrade in themselves. And that's why we love Brian and Rob so much because they are straight talking, easy to understand and much deeper than simply the words they speak. And that's what this podcast is about , understanding and mastering the pricniples of breathing and being in order to apply them as you wish to enhance your life. Enjoy and as always let us know your thoughts in the comments below or email us.
Today we welcome breathing guru Brian Mackenzie onto the show. Brian has dedicated his life to breath practices and understanding the key role which they play in wellbeing. Maintaining the body’s pH through breathing impacts physical and mental performance, and it even improves our emotional responses to situations. Brian is here today to share more about these biochemical aspects of breathing.

Thoughts on Brian Mackenzie podcast with Chris and James
This week we share our conversation with Brian Mackenzie.Brian is part of a select group of coaches who were involved in the early days of Crossfit and beyond. Brian has dabbled in ultra endurance events and worked with his a wife Erin Cafaro MacKenzie a two time Olympic Gold Medalist in Rowing on preparing for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.More recently he has become heavily involved in the importance of breathing for performance and as a byproduct health. He is working with some of the worlds leading athletes whilst researching and developing protocols to harness the benefits of breathing for boosting performance. What strikes a chord with Chris and I are the philosophical nature of Brian and others in his position. I am not sure if developing an understanding of the mechanics of breathing and its benefits creates this or simply a matter of time in the game. Most likely both.Having worked with some of the worlds best to achieve the impossible, Brian has a unique view of the world and takes this approach to his research and coaching. His interest lies in the principles of performance rather than the dogma of a specific practice, his goal is to understand just what this being (our bodies) are capable of and breathing is a direct measure of this.As we witness a boom in the number of breathing coaches around the world, it interests us that there are many different methods which people align themselves to and often as is the case with most things, believe their way is the best way. Yet there is no right way, other than following your own path combined with an understanding of the principles and this goes for breath. When we understand the principles, are open to learn and able to learn and in the same breath unlearn our old ideas, that is freedom and that freedom unlocks our potential. As always this life is a process, and you have to have skin in the game to make the progress you know you can make. There are some gems in this one, so have your notebooks ready and enjoy. You can follow Brian @_brianmackenzie and his program @powerspeedendurance

Rob Wilson comes from a formal education in manual therapy with 15+ years of experience as both a practitioner and teacher. He resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife Thomi where they have owned and operated CrossFit Virginia Beach since 2006.In the past decade and a half Rob has had the good fortune to work with an enormous variety of athletes ranging from amatuer, nationally and internationally ranked athletes in everything from power lifting and sailboat racing, to individuals in the US Naval Special Warfare Program. Rob truly enjoys working with the tactical communities of the U.S. Armed Forces. Over the course of his career he has had the honor to help serve many active duty service members and veterans, through both his private human performance consultation work, and through groups like the Resiliency Project – which seek to further the resources available to military groups. Prior to creating the Art of Breath series with Brian Mackenzie, where they work closely with Stanford Universities Neuroscience department, Rob was an original member of the world renowned MobilityWod staff under the direction of Dr. Kelly Starrett. Dr. Starrett and MobilityWOD was influential in Rob’s development as a professional in the human performance sector. Rob is a passionate teacher to the core. Throughout the course of his career as a manual therapist and coach one thing became abundantly clear; it’s better to teach a person to fish. Without education athletes are left to unknowingly repeat patterns of behavior that may not be pursuant to the actual desired outcome. That is to say the best remedy is often learning. At an Art of Breath clinic, you will learn: Why you should breathe through your nose during your training so you can go harder and faster for longer. What the diaphragm is and what it does because it may be the most important muscle you’re not using. How to increase your tolerance to carbon dioxide because it is the key to accessing your fuel stores. How to mobilize your upper back so you can use your lungs to their fullest. How your breath is the key to your mental state so that you can manage the stress of everyday life. How to use breath work into training sessions so that you, or your clients, can enjoy the power of the breath. Listen To Episode 203 As Brian Mackenzie Uncovers: What he is currently working on with breathwork and the mind. How to be more mindful of technology use. How we can change our state of mind at any moment we choose. Why we're almost using technology as a crutch for our natural sensory units. How to use non-meditative methods to enhance your state of mind. The process of rewiring the subconscious mind through conscious training and heighten awareness. How we can alter our minds in the present moment in order to re-focus on the task at hand. A common thread between improper breathing and poor performance. The concept that everything is everything and it all can be integrable to the point where anything from breathing to posture affects who we are. Why technology cannot ultimately replace our internal awareness. His thoughts on mouth taping and whether it's beneficial or not. How he trained himself to no longer breathe through the mouth as he slept. Cueing nostril breath practices vs. breathing through the mouth and when one is more appropriate than the other for high performance What you can gain and learn from training yourself to only breathe through the nostrils. The fact that the yoga world has been focusing on breathing solely through the nostrils for ages. Power Quotes From The Show "Meditation is a practice that you put into play that becomes a part of what you're doing. I can breathe, visualize, or focus on some sounds. We need to make these changes in the moment so that we can refocus on the task at hand." - @brianmackenzie http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "By design, we want comfort and we want life to be easy. Just look at the world we live in today. It's so easy today to get food or whatever we want at any given moment but go back a hundred years and it wasn't possible. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it but we get so focused on what is making things easy and comfortable that we forget that the only reason we make change is because of discomfort. Getting caught in that, we get afraid of stepping outside our comfort complex of technology." - Brian Mackenzie "I daily catch myself spending too much time on my phone but I know what I need to do as a result of that. So, if I've been on my phone for too long, I know I need to take a visual break because my visual system actually works with my physiology and my entire body reacts. In those situations, I do a breathing pattern, look 20 feet away from me in the distance, listen to music, or go outside to easily change what I'm doing for a few minutes to instantly improve how I feel." - Brian Mackenzie "Meditation is a practice that you put into play that becomes a part of what you're doing, but I can breathe, look at my visual system, or focus in on some sounds. I can do a lot of things in the moment and this is what we're really trying to teach. We want to be able to make these changes in the moment so that I can focus on what I need to or be open to what I need to do." - Brian Mackenzie "Technology is only being used to get us back to what it is that we're capable of actually doing ourselves. Technology is going to help and allow us to do a lot more, but how far are we removing ourselves from these basic physiological responses? Technologically is going to allow us to get back to that place." - Brian Mackenzie "Everybody has a response to fear. Even Navy SEALS have the exact same response that you and I have and these are the supposed to be the people who aren't afraid of anything, but that's not true; we're all the same and we all have the same reaction. It's about how fast they come back to their baseline. Most of us have a great jolt of fear and then it takes awhile to come back down or we need to be in that state of anxiety or sympathy for a longer period of time. That's where our breathing is playing the biggest role." - Brian Mackenzie Links From Today's Show Brian Mackenzie Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube LinkedIn The Art of Breath Power Speed Endurance Unplugged Unbreakable Runner Power Speed ENDURANCE How to Be Mindful When You Have Seasonal Allergies Brian Mackenzie on the Effects of Breathing on Recovery Brian MacKenzie on the Benefits of Nasal Breathing, Downregulation & More! Brian Mackenzie is back on the show!! He has studied performance and movement for more than a decade along with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics, heat and cold exposure. He most recently co-authored the book "Unplugged" with Dr. Andy Galpin. This episode builds upon our first one (EP.13), where we dug into the science and physiology behind breathing. I went through a breath assessment and have been experimenting with my customized breathing protocols for the last 4 weeks. I've been using it to process and switch between tasks more efficiently, mitigate unwanted stress and anxiety, and really observing how these different protocols affect your physiological state. My favorite segments of this episode are where we discuss creative process, the forgotten art of apprenticeship, time management, and the dance between fulfillment and challenge. Oh and you'll also hear about how Brian's been swimming with sharks for some new research studies on fear and anxiety coming out of Stanford's laboratories. The Art of Breath Clinich (From the Power Speed and Endurance webpage - http://powerspeedendurance.com/event/georgia-art-of-breath-clinic/) If we don’t breathe, we die. Although we all know this simple fact breathing remains the most underutilized component of health and human performance. The Art of Breath (AoB) is a program developed to give participants an experience based understanding of how breathing can affect both short term performance and long term health. Through a variety of simple and effective teaching tools we will help illuminate this powerful practice and help you grab this low hanging fruit. The AoB purpose is to help facilitate a deeper understanding of the physiological process so that each person can ultimately tailor their own breath practice to his or her individual needs. Brian Mackenzie (@iamunscared) Brian Mackenzie is a human performance and movement specialist. He is the innovator of the endurance, strength and conditioning paradigm. He has studied performance and movement since 2001 with altitude, hypoxia, breathing mechanics & methods, along with heat and cold exposure. He has spent a lot of his time training and understanding in and around the water, and desert. He has participated in Ironman (Canada 2004), and has run the Western States 100 and the Angeles Crest 100 mile endurance runs. He co-authored the book “Power Speed Endurance”, and NYTimes Best Seller UnBreakable Runner. He founded and created Power Speed Endurance (PSE), which specializes in movement & skill development with an emphasis in running, cycling, and swimming mechanics. He has taken on a quality vs quantity approach for every aspect of the programs he’s worked on. MacKenzie’s programs have taught more than 400 seminars worldwide and provided programming for this via PSE. MacKenzie and his programs have been featured in Outside Magazine, Muscle & Fitness, Men’s Health, Competitor Magazine, Runners World, Triathlete Magazine, Men’s Journal, ESPN Rise, The Economist, Tim Ferriss’ New York Times bestseller The 4-Hour Body & Tools of Titans, Scott Carney’s best seller What Doesn’t Kill Us, Men’s Running UK, LA Sport & Fitness, Muscle & Performance Magazine, and Rivera Magazine. Rob Wilson (@preparetoperform) Rob Wilson comes from a formal education in manual therapy with 15+ years of experience as both a practitioner and teacher. He resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife Thomi where they own and operate CrossFit Virginia Beach. In addition to working with the Power Speed Endurance team Rob is also a member of the world renowned MobilityWod staff under the direction of Dr. Kelly Starrett. Rob’s main sport background is youth martial arts including Jeet Kune Do (the philosophies of Bruce Lee), Judo, Muay Thai, and Maphiliindo Silat and Kali. Like many coastal kids Rob grew up surfing and skating as well and developed an affinity for the ocean and Nature at an early age. Rob Wilson is a passionate teacher to the core. Throughout the course of his career as a therapist one thing became abundantly clear; it’s better to teach a person to fish. Without education athletes are left to unknowingly repeat patterns of behavior that may not be pursuant to the actual desired outcome. That is to say the best remedy is often understanding. Rob’s journey is about developing a deeper understanding of human performance to better serve those who wish to actualize their potential. Rob’s underpinning philosophy is borrowed from the tenets of Jeet Kune Do: Research your own experience Absorb what is useful Reject what is useless Add what is specifically your own
You’re breathing anyway, so why not be better at it! It’s really the most fundamental element of your physical existence. On this Friday Short Coach Joe catches up with Rob Wilson. Rob is a Mobility Wod staffer, Co Owns CrossFit Virginia Beach with his snake charming wife, and is currently working on a collaboration with Brian MacKenzie on breathing. Sit back, pull out a notebook and grab the basics on breathing. In this short you will learn: How Brian and Rob hooked up and began developing Art of Breath Why breathing is so paramount to performance. The function of the Autonomic Nervous System and its two parts; sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. What is the low hanging fruit for most dysfunctional breathers. Position equals strength in all we do, even breathing. What will this course look like in the group setting. If we have wet your whistle and raised your curiosity, wait we have more. Below you’ll find a few links to investigate the curious habit of breathing, a few social media post from Brian and Rob on breathing, and Rob’s email address if your into contacting him the old fashion way!
