Drs. Karl and Spencer talk with fellow Docs Who Lift and the team of Barbell Medicine Drs. Jordan Feigenbaum and Austin Baraki about the harms of the various hormone clinics out there along with ordering large batteries of tests. Hear Dr. Austin's case study where a huge number of tests were ordered only to give the patient thousands of dollars of supplements and drugs they didn't even need. And get this... they didn't even address the one issue they were having.

Iron is involved in a whole range of biological processes and a consistent supply of iron is crucial for cellular turnover. But despite iron being an essential mineral for human function, it is highly toxic to cells and tissues if present at high levels. Therefore an intricate and tight regulation of iron is necessary. If iron status gets too low, iron-deficiency anaemia can result. In such situations there is a shortfall in hemoglobin production, which leads to a range of issues in the body. So how is iron status measured? Which biomarkers are most useful? Where can errors in diagnosis occur? What problems arise with iron deficiency? And what problems occur with iron overload? In this episode, these questions (and more) are put to Dr. Austin Baraki, a practicing Internal Medicine physician and Assistant Professor of Medicine at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Texas. This episode is the first in a three-part series on iron. Links Episode page & relevant links Subscribe to Premium Live event in London
VYS0012 - Show Notes When Hine and Buckley had the idea to start a podcast about weird stuff in order to re-evaluate their reality this was the exact thing they had in mind. Mark Vincent is a man of many disciplines and much discipline - chaos magician, hypnotist, drummer, Lavey Satanist and purveyor of mind-blowing ideas. What was intended to be a discussion about chaos magic quickly spins off-track and takes a fascinating detour through the hard problem of consciousness, assembly theory, overcoming chronic pain and the pervasive nature of trance in occult practice. If you come away from listening to this episode with your idea of reality intact, then maybe you don't really exist at all... Recorded 21 November 2022. The hype around Vitamin D supplementation has waxed and waned over the years in the lifting community, but has overall, landed in a place where it's more or less universally seen as a positive supplement. But what is the state of the data? What can you expect as a lifter out of vitamin D supplementation? How do you measure vitamin D status, how reliable are these measures, and should we even be measuring it? The answer probably differs at the population and individual levels. We're joined by Dr. Niamh Aspell of Sigma Nutrition who did her Ph.D. on Vitamin D as well as Austin Baraki, MD from barbell medicine who deals with this on a clinical level on a regular basis to answer these questions.

Dr. Austin Baraki joins Danny and Alan to critically evaluate the assumption that blood levels of a nutrient directly tell us about overall nutritional status. With many people getting blood tests done outside of clinical settings, there is significant risk of misinterpretation of what these measures mean. In this episode we discuss measures of calcium, sodium, vitamin D and others as examples of where misinterpretation and misunderstanding can happen. In every episode we ask our guests, "what does preventive medicine mean to you" and get a variety of answers. In fact, we recently had a post on Instagram that included all of the answers in one graphic. Beyond that question, we don't explore the question further and get straight into the topic at hand. In this episode, Ragav goes in depth into the question of what preventive medicine means from various different perspectives to create a comprehensive picture. He discusses his interest in preventive medicine, the different "branches" of preventive care, and what we can do to bring it all together to improve people's lives. Join us for an authentic conversation with Barbell Medicine's Austin Baraki MD. True to form, we had a very open and honest conversation about Austin's perspective on aspects of healthcare he would love to see improved upon. We learned more about his story, and how he came to be passionate about all things strength training, pain, and behavior change. He also has some fantastic advice on several topics including better strategies for discussing evidence with colleagues and MDs. Most importantly, while still “in our echo chamber,” Austin's perspective is very helpful to understand what is going on in the big world of healthcare, beyond the rehab field. We will be hosting Dr. Michael Ray and Dr. Derek Miles of BBM in November at our clinic in Boston Pain and Rehab Seminar Our friends at RX strength training will be hosting Dr. Austin Baraki and the BBM team for their seminar in April BBM Seminar

In Part 2 of the back pain miniseries, Coach D and Trent discuss the science of pain. The traditional pain model describes pain as pain messages (nociception) delivered to the brain as a noxious stimulus in response to tissue damage. While this model works well to describe acute pain, such as smashing your fingers in the car door, it does not adequately explain the great number of people who experience pain without tissue damage or other pathology. Likewise it fails to explain people with tissue damage who do not experience any pain. The emerging biopsychosocial model of pain, which describes pain as not only a physical experience but an emotional one, attempts to reconcile these gaps. While our understanding of pain is still developing, it is clear that pain is a complex experience. Austin Baraki Bio - Starting Strength Staff Coach is a resident physician in Internal Medicine at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas. He received his doctorate in Medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia and his B.S. in Chemistry from The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He became interested in strength training after completing a 15-year competitive swimming career through the Division 1 collegiate level, and is now a competitive powerlifter and strength coach for clients of all ages with Barbell Medicine. He now practices telemedicine through SteadyMD. Some the topics covered included: What got you into swimming? What got you into strength training? Are there any crossovers between your years as a swimmer and powerlifting? Why Starting Strength and not some other thought center around powerlifting like JTS, Westside, RTS, or 5/3/1? Is it the certification process that appealed to you? HRT and PL - will the USAPL ever allow athletes on HRT to compete and potentially be apart of the IPF? Do other countries have to be as strict in testing their competitors as the US (thinking of the Icarus movie)? - The link to the article Dr. Baraki mentions can be found here. Separate question - I know you had a seminar talk regarding testosterone and strength training (perhaps not posted on youtube yet) - are there significant differences in strength being at a test level of 290 vs a test level of 900 ng/dL (both considered to be normal levels of testosterone in a non-obese adult). Questions from the Facebook group: What one thing should you look for before hiring a strength coach? Who's smarter him or Jordan Feiganbaum? Where do you see the future of powerlifting being the next 10-30 years? Besides "the bridge" what intermediate programs do he thinks are useful?
