Rhonda Britten -- Emmy Award-winner, 4x Bestselling author, Repeat Oprah guest, Tedx Speaker, Huffington Post Contributor, and Master Coach – has devoted her life to one thing: teaching people how to master fear. She has created a method for anyone to overcome the insidious fear of “not being good enough” using the “Wheel Technology” she developed to save her own life. What she teaches is what she has lived. The episode presents an in-depth exploration of the multifaceted relationship between fear, teaching, and learning. Rhonda Britten introduces her innovative methodologies, including the 'Wheel of Fear' and the 'Wheel of Freedom', which serve as frameworks for understanding the psychological barriers that hinder student participation and engagement. She posits that fear is not merely a personal flaw but a universal experience that shapes behavior and learning in profound ways. Rhonda reflections on her own educational journey reveal the detrimental effects of fear on student participation, highlighting the need for educators to adopt a more empathetic approach. Significant transformation in education requires educators to first address their own fears and emotional needs. By prioritizing self-care, teachers can cultivate an environment conducive to authentic learning and emotional safety, allowing students to express themselves freely. This conversation is a call to action for educators to engage in self-reflection and to foster a fearless culture in their classrooms, ultimately leading to a more enriching educational experience for all.Takeaways: The Wheel of Fear and Wheel of Freedom offer frameworks to understand personal fear dynamics. Identifying one's core fear can significantly shift perspectives and enhance personal growth. Authenticity in education requires teachers to understand their own needs and emotions. Students often conceal their fears, which can hinder their learning and engagement in the classroom. Teachers must prioritize self-care to effectively support their students' emotional and educational needs. Creating a supportive classroom environment necessitates a focus on students' individual experiences and needs. Carol Smaldino – Is Political Climate Change An Inside Job? – How Our “Human Climate” Feeds Political Discourse … and DiscordAired Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with Carol Smaldino, Psychotherapist and Author of “The Human Climate: Facing the Divisions Inside Us and Between Us”“There are no sides, only angles. And when we see it from the right angle, we’re all on the same side.” — Swami BeyondanandaWith political discourse and political discord nearly synonymous, and with the phenomenon of “fake news” – where facts take a backseat to emotionally-fueled beliefs — maybe it’s time we look at the fact that feelings make more of a difference than facts do. Might this highly-charged politics “out there” have something to do with the emotional terrain “in here”?Our guest this week, psychotherapist Carol Smaldino thinks so … she has written a book that speaks directly to the stormy political climate, “The Human Climate: Facing the Divisions Inside Us and Between Us”, that examines the role of emotions in our political landscape, both in politicians and in the diverse populations and issues that make up this landscape. As someone who speaks with and listens to “both” sides, what’s clear to me is that for the most part, each side sees the other side’s shadow – but not its own. Combine this with each side constantly receiving, embracing, and absorbing information that reinforces what they already “know” to be true. I know, I know. The other side is much more that way than we are. (Exactly what the other side is saying about us.)All of which means it’s time for a “meta-conversation” where we become aware of and integrate our feelings so we don’t have to project them on to the other, and we become more aware of what pushes our buttons – and how to stay less susceptible to manipulation.Carol Smaldino, is a social work psychotherapist, and has been a Huffington Post Contributor from 2008 through 2017. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York; she attended Madison High School, Brooklyn College and Wurzweiler (Yeshiva University) School of Social Work. She has also done coursework at NPAP (National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis). Before graduate school, she worked at the Bureau of Child Welfare, Roosevelt Hospital Child and Youth Project. After social work school, she spent five years working at a residential treatment center. She was a therapist and supervisor and student at the New Hope Guild, and developed a private practice in NYC and then Port Washington, NY. She is the creator of The 6-Figure Mompreneur Podcast, a Huffington Post Contributor, has been featured in YFS Magazine, and was named one of Washington, D.C.'s most influential professionals under 40 by Washington Life Magazine. I really enjoyed my conversation with Allison. Like myself, she's a mother of two small children and has structured her business around the life she wants for herself and her family. We got into the nitty gritty of how she transitioned from working 16 hour days in her first year of business to now only working during her 16 month old daughter's naptime, all while scaling her business to multiple 6-figures per year. Allison is completely transparent with what worked, what didn't, and what she would have done differently while building her business. Listen to my interview with Allison to learn: • What Allison's first year in business looked like • The importance of systems and automations in your business • Why you should start building your email list sooner than later • The advice Allison would give her younger self before embarking on this entrepreneurial journey Allison has also gifted 3-Day Workweek listeners her Clients on Autopilot training series, a 4-part video training series that will help you create and automate a lead generation strategy that is predictable and scalable. Athlete. Entrepreneur. Author. Podcaster. Speaker.Playing overseas was one of the best experiences of my life. Through all of the ups and downs, I learned so much about who I was as a man and how to survive in a foreign country on my own. I gave so much to the game of basketball and it is still a huge part of who I am today. This is why I aim to give back to so many other athletes.Writing a book was never in the plan. Hell, I never even considered myself to be good at writing much of anything until my second year playing overseas. In my first couple of weeks there, all I had was a room, a computer (without internet connection), and a lot of time. Entrepreneurship to me is all about taking a huge risk on your future for a vision only you can see. This is what I’ve done my entire life. I’ve sacrificed and believed in my vision despite other people who doubted me. It is also about patience, determination, and grit, things that I have prided myself on for as long as I can remember.Just like writing, public speaking was never something I saw myself doing. I learned how much I am able to impact others through words and that’s what it has been all about ever since. Through my experiences, and every time I have an opportunity to speak publicly, my aim is to change at least one person’s life for the better.WebsitePodcastConnectDave SwansonWebsiteBook Goat Wrestling Perseverance Clothes Free Chapter of my Bestselling Book? Right now, and for the past 2-3 years, my Facebook Group has been the single best thing I’ve spent time on in addition to my email list. Both of them are my jam. Your Facebook group should build your email list and if someone is on your email list they should be in your Facebook Group. When you want to grow your business, you need to build the know, like and trust factor. Our guest today is someone who helps business owners to hone their speaking skills and create effective speeches. Carrie Sharpe is a Communication Consultant and Speaker at He says, She says. She has been married to her husband, Ryan, for over nineteen years. They have five children, including twin daughters. Carrie believes that the foundation of every great relationship is effective communication, so she loves to help people overcome communication challenges and strengthen their relationships. She coaches clients in public speaking, marriage and family communication, workplace communication, and pageant interview skills. Carrie earned her degree in Political Science and Psychology from Lake Superior State University. She homeschools her children full-time, and she runs her communication business from home. She is a Huffington Post Contributor and has been quoted in a variety of publications. Carrie has spoken across the United States and Canada about marriage, relationships, and communication skills. IN THIS EPISODE 2:08 Carrie's fun fact is that she's worn a dirndl multiple times. 4:22 Confidence and comfortability is important when you are married and sharing a conversation. While someone may need to speak to their husband or someone else, it's a lot easier to talk to a third party about the problems instead of talking with that person about what's bothering you. You have to be courageous enough to get vulnerable. You have to be courageous to get vulnerable. 8:55 If there are brain patterns of having anxiety, getting yelled at, negative experiences, from the past, you have to work through those emotions and deal with them. There are mindset issues you have to walk through. In coaching, Carrie works through these emotions differently depending on what she's coaching on. 9:09 If it's a public speaking coaching, I try to get them to switch their mind from feeling scared to feeling excited. I tell them to say "I'm so excited to share this," "I'm so excited." 9:52 If it's networking, a lot of that fear comes from them not being comfortable with what they're selling. If I get them to understand that what they're selling is helpful and useful to their audience. 10:31 Change the brain. It's all about what you're telling yourself. If you're telling yourself that people are going to hate what you're offering, telling yourself that you hate this. If you change the story then you can change the outcome. 12:13 Start with a one on one conversation at a networking event. Instead of seeing the crowd, see a person you can talk to. If you do that, you'll get better results because you're building that relationship. Conversation starts can be asking good questions of someone. They feel like they can connect with you and they'll sing your praise. That will make them feel comfortable and you can build the conversation off of the answers they give. Names are really important to remember and if I say them during the conversation, it helps me feel important and remember the person's name. 20:23 What I hear from people is I know I need to speak and get my message out, but I don't know what to talk about. So I first dig into what they're already talking about and then we work on that message. So many times we're asked a few questions frequently. You find what you're most excited and passionate about are what you can develop into a message. Then there are other fears that are developed and questions that come up. That's when having a coach is helpful. We work on an outline for the talk and find an outcome for that talk. We set things up to support that one topic and it's 3-5 bullet points and every point needs a story. Stories are what make you human and what allows you to be human and memorable. Keep it simple and narrow down on one particular thing. 26:51 We know so much, we want to be so helpful and we want to cram it all in, but you're being more helpful when you leave it out. You don't need to change their life, you just need to change their day. 28:29 I love seeing results. I have clients who come in with so many ideas and then seeing them develop a speech, and deliver it is amazing. 29:34 Someone needs to hear your story. So get out there and share it. So many of us don't give ourselves the credit for the experiences we've had. 31:31 You've been given these experiences in your life for a reason, if you don't go out and share them, then your experiences were for nothing. You want to share them and make that experience worthwhile. And it doesn't have to be speaking, it can be online on Facebook Live, it can be in so many ways. [bctt tweet="Someone needs to hear your story. So get out there and share it." username="tonyarineer"] KEY TAKEAWAYS Confidence and comfortability is important when you are married and sharing a conversation. How Carrie works with her different coaching clients to overcome fear or anxiety. Changing the brain makes a difference in how you see a situation. How to handle a networking event. You don't need to change their life, you just need to change their day. Someone needs to hear your story. So get out there and share it. There are plenty of mentors and coaches out there who will give you their take on what it means to change your life. But very few of them have the clear way of articulating it that Rosetta’s guest on this episode of Happy Black Woman, Debrena Jackson Gandy, has. Debrena is a prolific author whose writing and teaching come from her own experience. She’s walked the journey she leads others on and has carefully observed and learned as she’s taken that journey. This conversation is powerfully intriguing and will give you the push you need to begin the steps toward transformation inside that will result in the changes you want to see on the outside. Your external world cannot be in order if your internal world is a mess. Many of us look at the things going on in our world and feel out of control. We want things to change. We want things to be wildly different than what we see, but we don’t know how to start the ball rolling in that direction. Our guest on this episode of Happy Black Woman is Debrena Jackson Gandy, a relationship coach, author, speaker, and so much more - and she insists that your external world cannot be ordered, peaceful, and strong if your inner world is a mess. On this episode, she reveals the things that keep us from addressing what’s going on inside us and gives practical advice on how you can begin a journey of personal transformation. As a woman, you are a gift. As Debrena Jackson Gandy was walking her own path toward personal healing and transformation she went through a season where her marriage was falling on very hard times. She believed that her relationship with her husband was inevitably heading toward divorce - though it wasn’t what she wanted. At one point, when she reached her lowest moment she screamed at God, “What do you want me to do!?” She wasn’t really asking a question but she heard the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit say to her in reply, “Thank you for finally asking.” That was the point when she began to walk through the creation account in Genesis and discovered a wonderful truth: As a woman, she is a gift. You can learn the powerful difference that truth makes by listening to this episode. Marriage is a divine design that requires divine guidance. Every marriage has its hard times. It’s a given, simply because marriages are made up of two needy people who are each in need of growth. What Debrena Jackson Gandy discovered is that the relationship is not only about each person getting their needs met. And it’s not only about two people coming together to work as partners in life. She discovered that marriage is a divine design, created by God to accomplish extraordinary things. Without the divine guidance of God, it’s an uphill battle. You can learn how Debrena learned to receive the guidance God has to offer and how it changed her marriage, on this episode of Happy Black Woman. There are things you need to experience before you’re ready for the right man. Many women - and black women in particular - move into relationships with men out of a desire to fill an emptiness in their own souls. They feel insecure, so they seek a strong man to help them feel secure. They feel alone, so they seek a man to be their comfort or partner. They feel unlovable so they find themselves enjoying the attention of a man even if it’s only sexual in nature. Debrena Jackson Gandy has learned that no woman is ready for a relationship with a man until she has first established some foundational truths in her own life, in her own being that enable her to be valued and treated well within the relationships she enjoys. On this episode, you’ll hear how personal transformation and the steps leading to it are prerequisites to a healthy and happy relationship. Outline of this great episode [0:30] Rosetta’s guest today, Debrina Jackson Gandy. [2:29] Personal transformation via beliefs (interior) extending to the life (exterior). [4:31] How Debrina got interested in the issue of transformation. [12:14] The concepts Debrina teaches that lead to transformation. [23:25] The types of shifts these shifts in thinking make in your world. [26:41] What are the things we should let go of in our love relationships.
