On this episode of Black and Snerdy, Ode (@thatsod.e / @thatsod_e) and Mo "Kid" Licorish (@licorishislegit) celebrate Mother's Day with an all-new segment called "This or That: Mother's Day Edition," ranking and debating the greatest Black mothers in pop culture history. They kick things off with a spirited Claire Huxtable vs. Aunt Viv showdown — weighing Phylicia Rashad's groundbreaking prototype against Janet Hubert's cultural backbone — then move to Florida Evans vs. Rochelle Rock, breaking down Esther Rolle's improvised "damn, damn, damn" moment and Tichina Arnold's no-nonsense energy on Everybody Hates Chris. The matchups keep coming as they pit Cookie Lyon against Tasha St. Patrick, with Taraji P. Henson's scenery-chewing Empire reign earning unanimous love, and then tackle a real-life triple threat of Tina Knowles, Donda West, and Afeni Shakur, debating whose motherhood legacy — living or lost — left the deepest imprint on Black culture. The bonus mom round brings Sheryl Lee Ralph's Dee Mitchell from Moesha against Kellita Smith's Wanda from The Bernie Mac Show, sparking a heartfelt conversation about stepparenting and chosen family. Rapid-fire picks fly as they crown favorites between Dr. Lucy Carmichael and Dr. Trudy Proud, Queen Ramonda and Queen Aoleon, Bo Johnson and Miranda Bailey, Lisa Landry and Jay Kyle, and Sugar Mama and Madea — with Angela Bassett Oscar snub discourse, Tracee Ellis Ross appreciation, and a passionate takedown of Tyler Perry's portrayal of Black women all packed in. Before and after the matchups, they also roast Wicked for Good's questionable sequel choices, Michelle Yeoh's singing debut, and Colman Domingo's blink-and-you-miss-it Cowardly Lion, then close out with their Big Mad and Big Happy segments rounding out a stacked Mother's Day celebration.
The ladies are back and better than ever, and so are we for season 5 BABY! Carrie's bob is even shorter, Miranda's boobs are bigger, and speaking of which: Charlotte shows us one of hers! Samantha is in turmoil over Richard's attempts to win her back and wants revenge, and Miranda Bailey approves! Carrie takes herself on a date in NYC where she screams a lot and humiliates herself while acting like a manic pixie dreamgirl, before meeting an older version of herself if Carrie was at all ACTUALLY cool. Trailer
Meg rings in the New Year by welcoming star of Percy Jackson and the Olympians Dior Goodjohn to the podcast! "What Clarisse was learning and going through this season, I was also as Dior. It was a very therapeutic process playing her not only in terms of the pressure and intensity of how she was raised, but also in what she had to learn for herself about herself and the world—it's the exact same thing that I was having to deal with, learn, and go through in my own personal life while I was shooting the season." -Dior Goodjohn Dior kicks off the episode by sharing the grounding routine that keeps her centered, then takes us back to the early inspirations that first ignited her love for performing—including the High School Musical 2 DVD she practically wore out. When talking about her work as Clarisse La Rue on Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Dior opens up about the emotional preparation that shaped her performance, rooted in pieces of her own lived experience. She explores the unexpected connection Clarisse and Percy forge this season, a bond that proves vulnerability can be its own kind of power. "Once you utilize how to make things work for you and within a space that makes you feel comfortable and connected to your body, the way that you can get things done, and the speed and agility like that you can do things is just insane. When I stopped trying to force myself to work in a very traditionally masculine sense—like go, go, go, burn out—everything changed when I started trusting my instincts. It's important to think logically and critically, but not everything is like that. And that's when things really started to shift for me in my life, when I started to trust myself…" -Dior Goodjohn Dior also talks about how her love of music weaves its way into her work on set, using playlists to lock in the emotional pulse of epic scenes. Across all her creative pursuits, she keeps her focus on what matters most: clear intention, meaningful storytelling, and a genuine sense of gratitude for every step of the journey. CherryPop welcomes star of The Buccaneers, Aubri Ibrag to the podcast. Aubri and Meg explore her character Lizzie's empowering Season 2 arc. They touch upon the show's beautiful and powerful themes of female friendship, love, and what happens when the two conflict. Although Lizzie may make some questionable choices, we're very proud of her for choosing love and following her heart. At the end of the day, the Buccaneers always find their way back to each other, which is just one of the countless reasons we are continually obsessed with the series. Although it takes place in the past, Aubri discusses the show's very relatable themes. We may not relate to, say, abdications, but we can relate to these characters on a human level, and as Aubri says, “that's what storytelling is all about.” We, of course, also dive into this season's sensational aesthetics, set pieces, and costumes. The episode comes to a close in true CherryPicks style with a game of “Sweet and Sour” with Aubri sharing her exciting future career goals and aspirations. “[There are] men like Seadown that exist, who made Lizzie feel so awful for such a long time, and she tried to almost quiet herself and make herself smaller so that she didn't elicit bad reactions from people, which is really heartbreaking. But I'm really proud of her [...] for pursuing love.” -Aubri Ibrag “After being sexually violated by Seadown, she was quite numb and probably gave up on the idea of ever having passionate feelings, but then came along Theo… I'm really proud of her for allowing herself to follow that feeling, even though it did hurt people. I'm proud of her for doing something wrong, for once, if that makes sense, that was in her own self interest.” -Aubri Ibrag All episodes of The Buccaneers Season 2 are available to stream on Apple TV+. CherryPop welcomes Abigail Cowen (Fate: The Winx Saga, Redeeming Love) to the podcast, who stars in two films out now. First up, Meg and Abigail dive into the wild and colorful world of Electra by the brilliant and vibrant mind of first-time feature film director Hala Matar. Cowen fondly talks about working with Hala and her love and appreciation for the passion and creative collaboration born out of independent filmmaking. “I wanted to act since I was like nine years old, and I never really got the opportunity, because I was in a small town in Florida that didn't have many theater opportunities or anything like that. I grew up on a farm, so I spent a lot of time outside making up stories. I've just always been fascinated by people and their stories—and understanding why people do what they do—and I think that's why I do what I do, and why I love it. It's been a passion of mine since I was very, very young.” -Abigail Cowen Next, the two discuss Cowen's powerful and physical work in The Ritual. In this horror film based on true events, she plays Emma Schmidt, a young woman undergoing multiple exorcisms alongside Hollywood legend Al Pacino. In addition, Abigail and Meg share their dislike of mornings, the need for better dreams, and an undying love for storytelling. “I really have enjoyed doing these smaller independent films, because it's a smaller crew. You have your director, who is usually also the writer. If you have an idea, you can throw it at them, and if they say no, they say no; if they like it, you can change it on the day in the moment. And having that smaller cast too to really hone in and collaborate with has been so fun for me, and so creatively fulfilling. [...] there is an air and just an energy on a set where everyone is on the same page, everyone is working the same amount and cares the same amount, which I've really fallen in love with.” - Abigail Cowen Electra is available on demand and you can watch The Ritual out now in theaters. In honor of the anticipated premiere of season 3 of the hit Netflix series, Ginny & Georgia, Meg welcomes its very talented star, Sara Waisglass, to the podcast! Sara expresses her deep love for her character, Max, and how her brightness and exuberance have been a powerful and bright light for her in the past. She insightfully shares how she navigated Max's big emotional shifts this season and worked with her co-stars to bring an authentic and grounded family dynamic to life. Meg and Sara connect over the show's ability to help audiences feel seen and less alone. Additionally, Sara speaks about her passion for screenwriting and how it's changed her approach to acting. “[Max is] fighting tooth and nail to stay in these girls' lives, and it's not like they're purposefully dissing her, but it's not like they're including her or feeling like they should include her, which is also very painful. Reading the scripts and seeing them all hang out without Max and being like, ‘don't tell Max', it hurt so bad. I've been so close to her for so long now that she feels like a best friend to me, and watching people talk about her poorly, and being like, ‘You're so dramatic', really was painful.” - Sara Waisglass CherryPicks is the best place to see what women think about movies, tv, and more. Rule Breakers tells the remarkable true story of how entrepreneur Roya Mahboob fought for girls' education in Afghanistan and formed the country's first competitive robotics team, the Afghan Dreamers. On this very special Season 3 premiere of CherryPop, Meg welcomes to the podcast, the film's inspiration and executive producer, Roya Mahboob, and stars Nikohl Boosheri and Amber Afzali. Nikohl and Amber start things off by sharing heartfelt memories from the set and remark on their meaningful experience filming and bringing this story to life. Roya joins in, and together, they discuss filmmaking as a powerful tool for change in continuing the fight for girls' education, and the importance of representing Afghan women in their entirety on screen. “We don't see courage being in the absence of fear. We see that it's having fear and moving forward anyways.” - Nikohl Boosheri “In Hollywood we don't see Afghanistan represented with the dark and the light. We often focus on the dark and we often see women with faceless identities or not being fully dynamic characters on screen. I felt good knowing that I can make my community proud by engaging in this project; I can make my family proud. And most of all, I could look back on the project and be like, this is something that I think is bigger than me.” - Amber Afzali Rule Breakers is out now in theaters! On this episode of CherryPop, Meg welcomes educator, advocate, and author Blair Imani. “If you're a lonely kid who has to eat lunch at the library, like I did, it just feels like that's gonna be your life forever. So, if someone can tell you a real-life story of somebody who was in that situation and overcame it, it can help you be like, ‘Okay, right now, I'm in my cocoon phase and, one day, I'm gonna bloom and become this beautiful butterfly'.” -Blair Imani The “Smarter in Seconds” creator shares the value of boundaries, personal space, and implanting strategic vulnerability. She also talks about her love for biographies, the fine line between disruption and curiosity, and the power of collaborating and honoring people's time. “I think one of the biggest things that capitalism and white supremacy culture tell us is that we can't work with our friends. We can't work with our family. And for a lot of folks who are marginalized [...] we don't have the option of not doing that. We don't have all the same opportunities; we have to make things work. And so it's all about having boundaries, all about building trust.” - Blair Imani Learn more about Blair Imani by visiting her website, joining her on social media @blairimani, and reading her books: Making Our Way Home (2020), Modern HERstory (2018) CherryPicks is the best place to see what women think about movies, tv, and more. Dark moods, stress, PTSD, anxiety, and trauma almost resulted in former Royal Marine Sam Murray taking his own life. It can be difficult to comprehend the levels of stress that Royal Marine Commandos must experience during and after their years of service. After hitting rock bottom, Sam embarked upon a difficult journey of self-awakening and personal development after discovering cold water and breathwork to be a life-changing combination. Inspired to help others overcome similar challenges, Sam has since co-founded the Breath Connection with his partner Miranda Bailey, a Nutritional Therapist and Breathwork Practitioner, as they now help others to "unlock the power of the breath to build resilience and reduce their stress. In this episode of the On a Mission podcast, Sam and Miranda discuss how their definition of success has evolved as they have evolved and share practical antidotes to rebalance a stressed mind and body. Could cold water immersion and breathwork be the key to unlocking the potential we all have within us? KEY TAKEAWAYS Most trauma has the devastating effect it does, because it triggers a memory or feeling from childhood that has yet to be addressed and resolved. We all know the answers that can lead us from darkness into the light, but we simply have to find a way of awakening these solutions within ourselves. Breathing, in Sam's case, was the key to unlocking this. Meditation and breath work performed first thing in the morning, can help to set your mind for the rest of the day. Quietening the mind and connecting with something bigger than us is a vital part of showing up effectively. Stress is a huge driver of human endeavour. Society teaches us that stress makes us somehow efficient, but this is not true. We have the power to manage stress through breath work, and should wield it as a power for good - alleviating stress and taking back control of our minds and bodies. BEST MOMENTS 'I had an awakening' 'We need to be prepared to go to war within ourselves' 'I'm really interested in breath work for its capacity to help us manage stress' 'Don't get caught up in your own thoughts and your own BS' VALUABLE RESOURCES On A Mission - https://omny.fm/shows/on-a-mission The Breath Connection - https://www.thebreathconnection.org The Breath Connection Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thebreathconnection_org/ The Breath Connection Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheBreathConnection Sam's Charity Relay Channel Swim - https://gofund.me/b94a69df ABOUT THE HOST Not so long ago, life was barely recognisable for Ellie McKay, raising three children under five, battling post-natal depression, facing redundancy and walking into the job centre to claim benefits with a double pram, no confidence, and wracked with insecurities. On this week's CherryPop episode, Meg welcomes actress and star of Grey's Anatomy, Kelly McCreary. Kelly shares her invaluable experience playing Dr. Maggie Pierce and how the character taught her to embrace her inner nerd. Additionally, she talks about Shonda Rhimes' impact on the industry and sheds light on the precedent set by Shondaland of a supportive and safe work environment. “Shonda's work first impacted me as an actor because it enabled me to envision myself in roles beyond just what I thought would be available to me. [...] Black women have always found a way to carve space out for themselves, but it's been hard fought—hard fought, hard won—and not a ton of opportunity, even when those spaces are made. So what was really exciting about Shonda, and the impact that she had on the industry [and] on casting, was normalization.” - Kelly McCreary “Raising a human being is work. The mental labor, physical labor, emotional labor, [are] defaulted a lot of times to women because of the patriarchy. Of course, there are lots of great men and dads out there who know how to integrate themselves or want to integrate, but let's be real, there's a fundamental assumption that women do a lot, and to know that would not cost me my job, that the work of being a mom would be unquestioningly supported by my work, is so incredibly valuable.” - Kelly McCreary CherryPicks is the best place to see what women think about movies, tv, and more. Available now on Prime Video, Harlem is a single-camera comedy following the lives of four best girlfriends from their college days at NYU, as they navigate sex, relationships and chasing their dreams “…When you go through things, it doesn't mean you have to stop being friends, it means that you love each other more, it means that you push into each other more, you're holding each other accountable in love wrong or right.” Meagan Good (Camille) On this two-part episode of CherryPop, our host Meg McCarthy had the immense pleasure of talking to three of the lovely stars of Prime Video's Harlem, Meagan Good, Jerrie Johnson, and Shoniqua Shandai. We find ourselves in our own dark twisty place this episode, as we reflect on our own covid experiences and remark at the relatability of the conversation between Addison and Amelia. Grey Slone memorial is full of familar faces and maybe too many storylines. We say a lackluster goodbye to Addison, Jo Wilson delivers a baby, Owen Hunt gets his army on, Megan Hunt brings faruk into hospital, where is Maggie? and Webber gets the help of Meredith Grey and Miranda Bailey to work on his new "Webber Method" for training the interns ( i mean residents). We also have a little moan that Grey's Anatomy will be on hiatus for a couple weeks. Which means the next episode of our season 18 recap won't be until after November 11. On the finale episode of CherryPop S2, Meg is joined by the very talented and insightful actress and filmmaker Caitlin Stasey. You know Caitlin from such shows as Reign (CW) and Bridge and Tunnel (Epix). Meg and Caitlin discuss nudity and simulated sex on screen, along with the double standard that pits women in mainstream film and adult entertainment against one another. "I think film and TV show us these explosive sexual relationships which are quite hard to maintain or even achieve a lot of the time. You have to remember, when you're watching sex scenes, you're watching the most beautiful version of sex ever [...] the absolute distillation of, like, the sexiest parts of sex.” - Caitlin Stasey Next up, Caitlin and Meg chat with Richa Moorjani, the brilliant star of Never Have I Ever (Netflix), about the representation of Desi women on screen, the importance of the female lens, and her character Kamala's brave choice to put herself first. Watch Richa return as “Kamala” on Season 2 of Never Have I Ever, streaming now on Netflix! “It's important, especially when showing female sexuality, to be told through a female lens, because that's what gives it authenticity and the sensibility that it needs.” - Richa Moorjani CherryPicks is the best place to see what women think about movies, tv, and more. Joining Meg this week on CherryPop is actress and advocate Lolo Spencer. Lolo is the founder of Sitting Pretty Productions, a platform devoted to showcasing disability lifestyle authentically, and shares the importance of inclusivity in intimacy on screen. “That's a topic that I've been advocating for since day one when creating content, because it's one never discussed. And it's never discussed in a way that I feel like is empowering or helpful, to the community. It's always this, you know, as we always say, inspiration porn perspective. That doesn't make me want to have sex! So this isn't what I'm making. If this doesn't make me want to have sex, nobody's gonna want to have sex with me if this is how we're talking about it.” -Lolo Spencer Lolo and Meg also break down the emotionally intimate and impactful moments in Lolo's 2019 film Give Me Liberty, for which she was nominated for a Spirit Award for her outstanding performance. This week on CherryPop, the lovely actress Nikohl Boosheri joins Meg to talk all about her beautiful and badass The Bold Type character, Adena. They also chat about representation of Muslim women on screen and the importance of the film Farah Goes Bang, in which Nikohl plays Farah, a twenty-something-year-old woman who has yet to lose her virginity. “In the past, we've always seen Muslim women and Middle Eastern women portrayed under the control of a man, a victim, not having any autonomy [...] submissive in some way. In the first episode, Adena says, ‘I'm a proud Muslim lesbian,' so I was like, wow, this is a woman who is in the driver's seat of her own life, and she's not afraid to rewrite stereotypes or challenge stereotypes.” - Nikohl Boosheri CherryPicks is the best place to see what women think about movies, tv, and more. The new film, BEING FRANK takes us back to 1992 where a young man named Philip is in the throes of teen angst. His dreams are dashed when his overbearing father, Frank, played by Jim Gaffigan, forbids his son from venturing out on his own. But Frank's anger at rebellion is hypocritcal since Frank is out here doing dirty his own self. The film's director, Miranda Bailey, and the titular Frank: Jim Gaffigan joined Jill in the studio to talk about the film that out in theaters now.

Miranda Bailey is a prolific film producer, actress and director. Currently, she's got two wonderful films in theaters, "Swiss Army Man" and "Don't Think Twice", the latter opening wide this weekend. Go see it. It stars Keegan Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Tami Sagher, Chris Gethard, Kate Micucci and the film's writer/director Mike Birbiglia. It's funny, sad, heartfelt and the best look at the world of improvisational comedy ever. Miranda has her own production company, Cold Iron Pictures, and started a distribution company, Film Arcade. Click the words. She's the real deal. The last half of our chat reveals that I am indeed an old fashioned sexist. Eye opening, as we delve into the topic of gender inequality. Truthfully, I wanted to leave that alone and just talk to Miranda as a producer, but felt it was needed so we explore and shed a little light. The trailer is at my website. Enjoy. Share. See the film. Thank you!! Jordan Commercial Directing Bootcamp only has a few seats left. August 13th. Chicago.
