Send us a textOn this episode of Speaking Of…College of Charleston, we have a great conversation with Joe Kelly, director of Irish and Irish American Studies and Colleen Glenn, director of film studies at the College about Irish books and movies. The colleagues first met playing softball with faculty from the English department and quickly became friends. They put their heads together and took a group of students to Ireland for a study abroad program, traveling from Dublin to Galway.“When we do those visits, the students follow our discussions of films, like In The Name of the Father and they're really able to see the landscape and the culture that inspired the movie they they saw on the big screen,” says Glenn. They recount trips around Ireland, emphasizing locations featured in Irish films such as Dublin, Galway, Connemara, and Belfast. Films discussed include The Quiet Man, Michael Collins and Banshees of Inisherin among others, illustrating the socio-political history and cultural identity of Ireland. The episode also touches on significant Irish cinematic movements and celebrates the storytelling legacy and literary richness of Irish culture. The way Kelly's describes the landscape, and the novels are a clear indicator of his knowledge and love for the country. He's an in-demand professor for a reason.“John Huston did a film version of The Dead, which is a very quiet story,” says Kelly. “And it ends with this beautiful scene where Gabriel Conroy is looking out the window at the snow falling onto the streets of Dublin and he imagines it falling across the mutinous Shannon waves and the bog of Allen and out onto the crooked crosses in the graveyard where Michael Furey lay buried. It's the most beautiful prose I've ever read and it's a absolutely beautiful 10 minutes of cinematography too.”Featured on this Episode:Joe Kelly, director of Irish and Irish American Studies at the College of Charleston, has been studying and writing about Irish literature since the 1990s, and in the last fifteen years he's been writing narrative histories about American democracy. Dean Leon Anderson's passion for filmmaking ignited at the age of six when he spent a summer binge-watching an extensive VHS collection at his child minder's home. From 'Back to the Future' to 'Ghostbusters', those formative films left an indelible mark on him, and a lifelong journey into storytelling began. Dean, born in London, has carved out a unique space in the film industry, specializing in personal narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide. His deep connection to film drives him to create stories that are not only visually compelling but also grounded in raw, authentic emotion. Since launching his production company, Velvet Gold Pictures, in 2012, Dean has directed five short films and is currently focused on his debut feature-length film, 'Jasper'. His short films have premiered at prestigious BAFTA and Oscar-qualifying festivals, including Encounters and the St. Louis International Film Festival, where his latest work, 'The Mediator', starred Daniel Portman of 'Game of Thrones'. With early-stage development funding from BFI NETWORK and the recognition of multiple award nominations, Dean's work continues to challenge norms and push the boundaries of narrative storytelling. Dean's journey in filmmaking has been anything but conventional. With no initial contacts in the industry, he forged his path by assisting fellow filmmakers and absorbing every ounce of knowledge he could. His breakthrough moment came when he shadowed director Yann Demange on the set of 'Top Boy'. That experience, coupled with the mentorship of seasoned filmmakers, ignited his drive to raise the bar for his own work. This ethos of self-investment and resilience has kept Dean on an upward trajectory despite the many challenges he has faced, including navigating the complexities of funding and producing films on tight budgets. In addition to his work as a writer and director, Dean is an active member of BAFTA Connect and a recipient of the Film & TV Charity's Reel Impact Fund, recognizing his contribution to amplifying diverse voices in the industry. His perseverance and dedication to his craft have earned him a spot in the prestigious Momentum program, where he receives support for his first feature film. With 'Jasper' and other projects in the pipeline, Dean's passion for creating original, personal stories ensures that audiences will continue to experience thought-provoking and boundary-pushing films for years to come. Rumor of a rumor from our community says Marvel was eyeing John Boyega to replace Jonathan Majors, but he said no, and now they are retooling and looking to gender flip the character and give us a female version of Kang. For the first time in 15 years, the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) is on strike. Today, Tuesday May 2nd, members began picketing at 1:00 p.m. at various locations including Amazon/Culver Studios, CBS, Disney's Burbank headquarters, and more. A statement from the WGA last week alleges that the studios would not agree to any guaranteed number of weeks of employment for television writers and instead proposed a “day rate” for comedy/variety writers, which would basically make a new category for writers. The statement also claimed the parties stonewalled on proposals over minimizing work with no pay and regulating artificial intelligence writing. The ‘Year of the Video Game Adaptation' (as coined here on Multiverse News) continues to shift into high gear as this week saw the release of trailers for 2 high profile motor-themed projects, based on Playstation games. Peacock's Twisted Metal series, starring Anthony Mackie, is set to begin streaming July 27th, while Neil Blomkamp's ‘Gran Turismo, with David Harbour, Orlando Bloom and Djimon Honsou attached, looks to race its way to big screens August 11th. According to an exclusive via The Hollywood Reporter, Nic Pizzolatto, the creative force behind HBO's True Detective, has been tapped by Marvel Studios to pen the script for the upcoming Blade film, reuniting him with Mahershala Ali, who starred in True Detective's third season. Blade is currently slated to start production in late May and eyeing a September 6, 2024 release. The film will be helmed by Lovecraft Country's Yann Demange. and also recently added Delroy Lindo and Mia Goth to its cast. After being seen having lunch with Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman, Mila Kunis officially debunked rumors that she'd be starring as The Thing, by saying, “ I am not in the Fantastic Four film, but I know who is.” Rob Delaney will reprise his role from Deadpool 2 as Peter in Deadpool 3 Pedro Pascal is in talks to join the cast of the Gladiator sequel Noah Hawley's Alien Series for FX Casts Sydney Chandler in Lead Role Taika Waititi is in final talks to direct a film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's New York Times bestselling novel 'Klara and the Sun.' Feige brought up Moon Knight's MCU future during a conversation with Entertainment Weekly about the initial wave of Marvel-produced Disney+ series, which included the six-episode Moon Knight series. "The fun thing about streaming is they are there forever, and people can keep re-exploring them," Feige said. "Moon Knight, same thing. I think there's a future for that character as we move forward." Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has provided an update on Spider-Man 4. During a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Feige was asked if there were any updates on Spider-Man 4, following the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. While his response was short, he did indicate the story is already settled for Peter Parker's next adventure. Feige said, "All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now." Marvel Studios President and Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige "reveals" which character from The Marvels steals the upcoming film. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Feige discussed what the major takeaways were for Marvel Studios during Phase 4, which introduced several new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a variety of films and television shows. "I hope we learn something on every project," he said. "I was very pleased with everything that we did. Kamala Khan, for instance, is a great new character in the pantheon. I'm very proud of the Ms. Marvel show. I also know — and this is a spoiler — she essentially steals The Marvels, which is coming out [July 28]. It makes me excited that people will, I hope, see that movie and then go back and revisit those shows on Disney+." The Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of Blade, starring Mahershala Ali as the famous vampire hunter, will shoot in about two and a half months, according to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. Feige was interviewed by Entertainment Weekly about the MCU's Phase Five, which begins with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and ends with an all new Blade in late 2024. When asked if he had any updates on Blade, Feige didn't disclose many details but confirmed that the film is moving along smoothly. "It's going well," Feige said. "Our director Yann [Demange] is down in Atlanta right now. Cameras roll in, like, the next 10 weeks or so." Insider reports previously claimed that Blade wouldn't begin shooting until July, but Feige's projected start date of 10 weeks means the movie will begin shooting this spring. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige addressed the ever-expanding scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pointing out that it was necessary to release a wide variety of films and television shows while noting that not everything would necessarily appeal to everyone. "If there's a Marvel Studios method -- like there was a Marvel method in publishing -- it's trying to do both," Feige told Entertainment Weekly when asked about balancing ongoing MCU story threads with capturing new audiences. "I've talked about this for years: If you want to dip in and out and just go to the movies on a Friday night or watch a streaming series, you can do that. And if you want to follow along, there's certainly much more to be discovered. But we don't ever want it to seem exclusive or that you need to have done your homework before watching something. Now, I've also realized that a lot of people like to do the homework. A lot of people find the fun in the homework and the continuity and the connectivity. But it is a balance of always trying to do both." Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently confirmed that Harrison Ford's Thunderbolt Ross is the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new U.S. President. Feige confirmed that Ross will move into the Oval Office in Captain America: New World Order in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "[Ross is] the President of the United States in the film," he said. "And with Harrison, you think about Air Force One, and you think about some of his confrontations with the president in Clear and Present Danger. There's a dynamic between President Ross and Sam Wilson. They have a history together, but in this film, we'll be seeing the dynamic between Captain America and the President of the United States in a way that is just incredible." Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes will play an essential role in the highly-anticipated Thunderbolts movie. Speaking with EW, Feige teased that Bucky Barnes will become the de facto leader of this group of complicated individuals who don't even consider themselves heroes. "What's fun about that [Thunderbolts film], and I sort of said this at D23, is that they are barely heroes," Feige said. "None of them would consider themselves heroes. When your de facto leader is Bucky Barnes, that's sort of all you need to know. That's the trickle down." According to Kevin Feige, the 'Previously On' recap could be less important for upcoming Marvel TV shows as they might experiment with more traditional episodic structures. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Feige stated that "[w]e want to do shows that can only be shows. I want to continue to make them even more episodic, which may seem counterintuitive. But I do think there is something fun about leaning back and watching an episode that can be relatively self-contained." He pointed to watching episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation to illustrate the pleasures of less overarching TV storytelling: "I still find it soothing to watch an episode of Next Gen with a beginning and an end. So, I think we're going to keep experimenting with that going forward." When it comes to upcoming projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has one, in particular, he's most looking forward to. "...We talked a little bit about Secret Wars. We talked about Kang Dynasty as related to Quantumania," Feige told Entertainment Weekly, referencing the MCU's current storylines and reflecting on future projects. "The only other one in terms of me personally and my 23-year history is the Fantastic Four. We sort of talked about mutants and that whole aspect to the Marvel world, but Fantastic Four is the foundation for everything that came after in the comics. There's certainly been versions of it [on screen], but never inhabiting the storytelling of the MCU. And that's something that is really exciting for us." MCU – MARVEL STUDIOS Brie Larson says The Marvels costar Iman Vellani is 'the future' https://ew.com/movies/brie-larson-the-marvels-iman-vellani-is-the-future/ The Marvels' Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel dynamic brings things full circle for Brie Larson, who joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks in part to Kamala Khan's 2014 comic debut. "A huge part of why I wanted to play Captain Marvel was because of Ms. Marvel and what that meant," Larson told Entertainment Weekly in regards to her MCU origins and co-star Iman Vellani's Marvel future. Praising Vellani's performance as the young hero Kamala, she continued, "To see that character realized by such a brilliant human with so much potential is just a really exciting thing." Larson described Vellani -- who made her acting debut in last year's Ms. Marvel Disney+ show -- as "the perfect Ms. Marvel and the most incredible person and castmate. I'm so excited for her success and I'm so excited to see what she will do with her life because she can do anything she wants. She's one of my favorite people on this earth." Deadpool 3, Blade Get Basic Synopses and the Same Filming Start Date https://www.cbr.com/deadpool-3-blade-synopsis-film-date/ Marvel Studios' upcoming films Deadpool 3 and Blade are both currently scheduled to begin production on the same day, according to a new report. Per Production List, the two Marvel Cinematic Universe titles will both commence principal photography on May 1, with Deadpool 3 shooting in Vancouver, Canada, and Blade set to film in both Atlanta and New Orleans. Brief synopses were also released for the upcoming superhero installments, with Deadpool 3's simply teasing "Another chapter in the raunchy, violent, and of course, hilarious Deadpool series." However, the synopsis for Blade is a bit meatier and reads as follows: "He is known to be a vampire hunter— half-mortal, half-immortal— who tries to rid the world of vampires as a way of avenging his mother, who was killed by a vampire as she gave birth to him." While light on plot details, the synopsis does confirm that the MCU version of the character will retain his comic book origin. Steve Yeun joining Thunderbolts https://deadline.com/2023/02/thunderbolts-steven-yeun-marvel-studios-1235268760/ He joins an ensemble that was announced during Disney's D23 event last year that includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. Ayo Edebiri also joined the ensemble in an undisclosed role. ‘Quantumania' Still Worst Drop For MCU Title, ‘Cocaine Bear' Real High With $23M & ‘Jesus Revolution' Raising $15M+ – Sunday Box Office https://deadline.com/2023/02/box-office-cocaine-bear-jesus-revolution-ant-man-and-the-wasp-1235269877/ Insiders at Marvel Studios aren't worried about Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, despite the film's record drop at the domestic box office. "Marvel takes something away from movies including Black Panther, including Avengers," an insider close to the film told Deadline about Quantumania, which dropped nearly 70% at the domestic box office in its second weekend in theaters. "I can say we're incredibly proud of the film, Jonathan Majors does a fantastic job as Kang. It's the movie we wanted to make. Box office is what it is. But it's not going to stop people from going back to the theaters." After ‘Ant-Man 3's' Second Weekend Box Office Collapse, Should Marvel Get Concerned? https://variety.com/2023/film/box-office/ant-man-quantumania-box-office-drop-concern-marvel-1235536265/ Marvel's latest MCU release, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, had a big box office drop over its second weekend, but Hollywood analysts suggest it's not time for Marvel to panic. The third installment in the Ant-Man franchise amassed $105 million in its opening weekend and followed up the next weekend with only $32 million in profit. Despite having the first $100 million debut of 2023, Variety reports that the 69% drop is Marvel's biggest second-week crash to date. Despite this, Marvel insiders have stated they are unconcerned with the significant box office loss, and Hollywood analysts seem to agree. Nielsen Streaming Top 10: ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' Becomes Third Most-Streamed Movie in One Measurement Week https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/black-panther-wakanda-forever-third-most-streamed-movie-measurement-week-nielsen-1235541540/ It's official – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has become Marvel's most-watched movie on Disney+. According to Variety, the sequel swiftly earned a spot on Nielsen's list of the most streamed movies within a week, with 2.269 billion viewing minute within its first five days on the service. Across all streamers it ranks third, just behind Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2.886 billion) and Hocus Pocus 2 (2.725 billion). Fantastic Four is coming in Phase 6, while the X-Men remain undated outside of Deadpool 3. With Kang and his infinite number of variants set to wreak havoc on the MCU, Marvel will need all of its heroes to defeat the powerful villain. Will that include members of the Fantastic Four and X-Men? Jeff Loveness, the writer for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, revealed (via Phase Zero podcast) if he believes the Fantastic Four and X-Men will be in the film. “No, I think all that stuff is pretty far away,” Loveness said. “I know they're making Fantastic Four, but that's its own thing. I mean, look, I'm the biggest X-Men guy in the world. No, I think that's being saved for a bit. But, these Avengers are in trouble. They got a lot going on with Kang. The Marvels Bumps Its Release Date Back to Late 2023 https://www.cbr.com/the-marvels-release-date-late-2023/ Marvel Studios has delayed its upcoming Phase 5 title The Marvels from summer 2023 to late 2023. Announced alongside a brand-new teaser poster for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel, The Marvels is now scheduled to open in theaters on Nov. 10. This is the fifth release date for The Marvels, which was originally scheduled to open back in July 2022. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was delayed to November 2022 and then February 2023. Marvel Studios had previously had the film set to open on July 28 for this latest delay. No reason was given by Marvel Studios for the film's delay; however, a recent report has claimed that Marvel is looking at having more breathing room between MCU projects to prevent audience fatigue as well as allow the creative times more time in post-production. The report mentions that the Disney+ series Echo and Ironheart are no longer guaranteed to debut in 2023 because of these changes and that development on other projects -- like the rumored Nova series -- will slow down. However, the insiders did not mention if the MCU films would be affected by this decision, so it is impossible to say if that is the reason for The Marvels' delay until Marvel Studios confirms the report, which it has yet to do at the time of writing. REPORT: Kevin Feige Is Eyeing Disney's Top Creative Position https://www.cbr.com/kevin-feige-walt-disney-studios-chairman-promotion While Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige's presence has been ubiquitous for fans following news about the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its 2008 inception, he's reportedly vying for a higher position. Feige, according to The Hot Mic podcast's Jeff Sneider, is looking to ascend the leadership ladder at Disney, specifically for the position of Walt Disney Studios Chairman. The position in question, currently occupied by Alan Bergman, is essentially the second-highest in the entire Disney corporate structure, just below the #1 spot of the recently reinstated CEO Bob Iger. Feige has long-coveted the position, and "wants to be the #2 at Disney," according to Sneider, who said that he has designs for "being the creative absolute head of a studio who can put his fingerprints on everything and leave maybe the business stuff to someone in the Iger-type of seat, who has to oversee parks, resorts and cruise ships." Indeed, he adds that the longtime Marvel Studios overseer "aspires to be more than the head of a label." How Kang Became Marvel's Next Supervillain and Why Phase 4 Sets It All Up https://gizmodo.com/kang-the-conqueror-mcu-marvel-phase-5-stephen-broussard-1850094830 While Tony Stark/Iron Man started the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios executive Stephen Broussard recently shared disappointing news about MCU veteran Robert Downey Jr. possibly returning to the franchise. While speaking to io9, Broussard said that he thought one of Phase 4's meta-narratives centered on new characters and mantles taken up by the latest heroes. "If you look at, like, Cassie [Lang in Quantumania] getting a suit and Kate Bishop [in Hawkeye], new characters being introduced like Jack in Werewolf by Night," he explained. "After these first 10 years of Marvel storytelling, torches are being passed, like with Robert Downey Jr. no longer being [on the] table and stuff like that. So it was kind of like a new generation stepping to the forefront which, again, has always happened in the comics." DISNEY+ Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur Releases Its First Episode Online for Free https://www.cbr.com/marvel-moon-girl-devil-dinosaur-episode-free/ The double-length premiere episode of Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is available to stream online for free. The premiere, titled "Moon Girl Landing," was released on YouTube the same day it aired on Disney Channel. The show follows Lunella Lafayette (Diamond White), a 13-year-old super-genius living in Manhattan, whose portal experiment accidentally summons a cherry-red Tyrannosaurus rex (Fred Tatasciore). Encouraged by her new friend and manager Casey (Libe Barer), Lunella dons a costume and an arsenal of homemade gadgets to protect the Lower East Side alongside the beast as the duo Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. However, when the two come across a genuine supervillain in the form of the electrically-powered Aftershock (Alison Brie), Lunella fears she may not actually have what it takes to be a hero. There is more than one queen that reigns over Wakanda. That queen is costume designer Ruth Carter, a 4-time Academy Award nominee (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Black Panther, Amistad and Malcolm X), and winner for 2018's Black Panther. She is also an Emmy nominee for Roots, a 3-time Costume Designers Guild Award winner (Coming 2 America, Black Panther, Career Achievement Award), a 3-time Critics' Choice Award winner (Black Panther, Dolemite Is My Name, Black Panther: Wakenda Forever), and so much more. Carter is responsible for the iconic outfits that Marvel favorites like Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) wear. She was also tasked with creating the outfits for the newly-introduced world of Talokan, like Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and Namora (Mabel Cadena). Carter continues to raise the bar higher and higher, not only for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for any individual in the profession. In result, Carter was honored with her fourth individual Academy Award nomination for the film, where the film itself garnered five nominations (Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects). When asked about The Hollywood Reporter article that was penned by The Woman King director Gina Prince-Bythewood around omissions of Black women for Academy Award nominations, Carter responded, “It's not myopic representation. It's global and I find representation in Bardo. I find representation in Everything Everywhere All At Once. I find representation in Pinocchio. I find representation in Camille Friend, in Angela Bassett, in myself, in Ludwig Göransson. There is a lack of representation of black voices and black images, and for that, I feel sad. Women directors, for that, I feel very sad. I do hail the efforts of those who have films that do speak to the Black community and such. I cannot turn my back on that type of representation as well this year.” We will find out the winners of the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12. What's next for Ms. Carter? Should you watch '71 (2014) from first time director Yann Demange? Well, if you wants some more rioting and protests in your life then sit down and enter that world from 1971 in Belfast, Ireland. Rotten Tomatoes gives this a whopping 98% and man I would have to agree. Join myself, Christopher Compton and my recurring guests Cole and Taylor as we discuss the merits of '71. Enjoy!
Our latest episode of Soundtracking has been some time in the making - so busy is the composer in question. But, boy, was it worth the wait. Max Richter is a name that's come up on numerous occasions on our film music podcast, with Joe Wright, Denis Villeneuve, Yann Demange and John Ridley among those who have either enlisted his services or used his original compositions in their work. So we were truly humbled when Max agreed to join us on stage at London's BFI for one of our live events recorded in front of an audience. Though we barely scratched the surface of his extraordinary back catalogue in the hour or so we had with him, we still covered a lot of ground, including his contributions to Waltz With Bashir, Mary Queen Of Scots, White Boy Rick, Black Mirror and Arrival.
Our guest on this week's Soundtracking is the extremely talented and likeable director Yann Demange. Having made his name with TV shows such as Dead Set and Top Boy, Yann moved into cinema with '71, a critically acclaimed drama about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. '71 is scored by David Holmes, who was also instrumental in helping Yann pick the music for his second feature, White Boy Rick. Based on an incredible true story, White Boy Rick stars Richie Merritt as Richard Wershe Jr. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Wershe_Jr.) , who became the youngest FBI informant ever at the age of 14 in the 1980s. The film is scored by wonderful Max Richter - who you'll be able to hear on this podcast soon - and also features a banging set of tunes from the 70s and 80s.
Our guest this week is Yann Demange, director of 2014's '71 and now White Boy Rick, starring Matthew McConaughey. He discusses the challenges of making a 'genre hopping' film in America, the differences between the British and American film industries, and how he hopes to be making even more personal films in the future. Presented and produced by Nick Hilton. With Yann Demange. This podcast is co-published by CineVue – visit cine-vue.com for the latest film reviews, features, interviews and festival coverage. Theme music is Smokin Sticks by Grandbankss. This is a Podot podcast. For sales and advertising contact nick@podotpods.com
Yann directs Matthew McConaughey's new movie White Boy Rick, which tells the true story of a teenager who became an undercover informant for the FBI before being arrested for drug-trafficking during the 1980s. Yann and I talk about the film, how he found its young star Richie Merritt, and what it was like working with McConaughey. The director and I also talked about his first feature '71 which is a Troubles set drama about a young British soldier who has to survive the night in Belfast after being accidentally abandoned by his unit. Yann told me about working with the Irish cast, who included Barry Keoghan, and about similar themes between White Boy Rick and '71. Lastly, Yann talks about his name being circulated around the Bond franchise. I hope you enjoy this interview, make sure to like and subscribe to On the Line. And of course, check out White Boy Rick when it hits Irish cinemas on December 7th.

Director Yann Demange discusses his film, White Boy Rick, with fellow director John Singleton. Set during the height of the crack epidemic and the War on Drugs in 1980s Detroit, the film tells the true story of Rick Wershe, Jr., a teenager who was convinced by federal agents to become an undercover drug informant in exchange for keeping his gun dealing father out prison. Seduced by the lure of easy money, he gets in too deep and becomes a notorious drug dealer himself. Download the Stardust app and follow us at gschiller! https://stardust.app.link/Invite Cue the music because it's time for Episode 13 of The Words are Not Enough! In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:Tomorrow Never Lies* Danny Boyle and the Fate of Bond 25 * As I'm sure many of you are aware, the frontrunner to Direct Bond 25 is now Danny Boyle. * The story first broke on February 20th from Justin Kroll at Variety. * Boyle has keen interest in the project and has always wanted to direct a Bond film. He is currently developing a project for Working Title, but with no cast currently attached, there is always the possibility of pushing that movie back to direct the 25th installment in the series. * Boyle has long been in MGM and Eon's sights to direct a Bond movie, going back to 2012's “Skyfall” and 2015's “Spectre.” * Sources tell Variety that “White Boy Rick” director Yann Demange was considered a top choice for the job, but there's been one last push to go after a more well-known name. * No official offer has been made. * Then a follow up story from Mike Fleming broke just the next day with more details: * When he directed the opening ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics, Boyle helmed Daniel Craig in a filmed bit that involved an action scene with a cameo from Queen Elizabeth II, so there is history between the actor and filmmaker. Boyle had an idea for a very specific 007 movie, and he and his Trainspotting partner John Hodge have teamed up to work out the beats. Hodge is writing that version and if it all works out, that would be the 007 film that Boyle would helm. * Hodge won't be done for a couple of months, but when he turns in the script, one of two things will happen. MGM and the producers will like it enough to shelve the movie they were contemplating — the listed writers are Neal Purvis & Robert Wade, whose 007 credits include Skyfall, Spectreand Casino Royale — and they will instead make the version that was cooked up by the Trainspotting team. Otherwise, Boyle won't direct the film and it will be back to the other script, for which MGM and the producers had assembled a short list consisting of a trio of cool directors * Now all that is well and good, but here's where things get interesting. * On March 6th, According to THR, it was reported that Yann Demange, who was heavily rumored to be a frontrunner on EON's list of potential Bond 25 Directors, will not only be directing the upcoming Matthew McConaughey film “White Boy Rick”, but has also been tapped by J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele to join the team on HBO's new series “Lovecraft Country”. * Demange will direct the pilot episode and executive produce the series. * So at this point it would seem that MGM and EON's backup is looking to be unavailable, thank God for Danny Boyle right? Well, it may be even trickier than we thought. * On March 4th, According to THR, Danny Boyle and Love Actually screenwriter Richard Curtis are teaming for an untitled comedy just set up at Universal. Details are being kept under lock and key, but it is known to be musically themed and set in the 1960s or '70s. Universal is eyeing a shoot as early as this summer, if the casting can come together. * If the project gets the green light, this could serve as a tricky road-bump for the producers at EON should they like the script Hodge producers. * It would seem that progress on Bond 25 is back to step 1, however just yesterday, March 8th, and interesting story emerged from Baz Bamigboye at The Daily Mail. * It would appear that 007 himself is pulling out all the stops to ensure Danny Boyle does in fact helm the next Bond project. * Craig... --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-words-are-not-enough/support

Screw on your silencer because it's time for Episode 3 of The Words Are Not Enough! In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:Tomorrow Never Lies* New remarks regarding the internet's top pick to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond have been made, one of which coming straight from the camel's mouth! * While at TIFF promoting his new film Suburbicon, George Clooney sat down with Variety to discuss a myriad of topics one of which happened to be who he thinks should play the next 007. Clooney said the following: * “I think Idris Elba should be the next James Bond, I think it's insane that you wouldn't. He's elegant and handsome and masculine. He would be a perfect James Bond and it would be a great step forward.” * It appears that Clooney has hopped on board the Idris Elba train along with a large portion of the online community and it's not hard to see why. Elba certainly brings a swagger and hardened edge to past roles that suites Bond quite well and if one were to want a glimpse at what an Idris Elba James Bond would resemble, they need not look further than his acclaimed BBC show Luther. * This is all well and good, however just today, Buzzfeed released an interview they had with the British actor and he had a few thoughts on the want for him to take on the role: * “I think not,” he said seriously of ever playing the role, and then immediately smiled. “But you really need to ask the producers. Like I can just,” he mimed picking up a telephone, “'Hey, I'm gonna play Bond next! No, it's Idris. Hello?' No one wants it.” * So it looks like the man himself doesn't think his chances fair well for portraying the next Bond after Daniel Craig's Swan song. * It's important to note though that Elba has gotten tired of the constant questioning and demand to play the character, so his response here definitely echoes what he's been saying all along. * Thoughts on the internet's obsession with Elba playing Bond, would he be a good fit* With Bond 25 looming on the horizon, more rumors have begun to circulate regarding who will direct the project. * It looked to be almost certain that '71 director Yann Demange had it in the bag, however even though he is still suspected to be the frontrunner, producer Barbara Broccoli had some interesting things to say on the matter. * While discussing her new film “Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool” with Screen Daily, the Bond Producer was asked for what she felt the chances were of having a female behind the camera on the upcoming Bond 25, Broccoli said the following: * There are a lot of women working on this production which pleases me very much. It's incredibly important to support a change in front of and behind the camera. I love working with women. It's a different vibe. We have to promote women within the industry. Women are often tasked with taking care of children and ailing parents, so it's hard for some women to sustain a career in this industry. We have to be more family-friendly, with childcare, flexible hours and job shares. At Eon, we have a lot of women doing job sharing and it's easy with technology. * So while not a straight answer on specifically the possibility of a female director taking over, it certainly does seem that Babs is very much in favor of a larger role for women in film and thus one could only assume is open to a female helmed Bond film. * If they were to select a female director, what director or directors would you like to see take on a Bond project?* With the recent announcement of Star Wars Episode 9 pushing it's release date back from May 24th, 2019 to December 20th, 2019 and the release of Wonder Woman 2 scheduled for December 13, 2019, one has to wonder if these box office behemoths will have an effect on the amount of money Bond 25 will make?

Vi besöker också seminariet Black is the New Black, arrangerat av Svenska filminstitutet.
