Interview by Karly JewellRapidly rising US rock outfit Crossbone Skully have yet to even release their debut album, yet still have managed to generate a vibe and feel seldom afforded to fresh bands, no matter their genre. But when the founding member and main man is none other than Tommy Henriksen (guitarist and musical director for Alice Cooper's band and member of Hollywood Vampires) you can sort of get a feel as to why anticipation and respect is already at a premium. To date Crossbone Skully have set the music world on fire with the singles Evil World Machine, The Boom Went The Boom (feat. Phil Collen), I'm Unbreakable and I Am The Wolf, furthering expectations for the band's debut album which is scheduled for release later this year via Better Noise Music. The album features first-class recording musicians including Nikki Sixx (Mötley Crüe), Jamie Muhoberac (My Chemical Romance, John Mayer, Seal), Chris Wyse (Hollywood Vampires, Ace Frehley, the Cult, Ozzy Osbourne), Tommy Denander, Glen Sobel (Alice Cooper, Hollywood Vampires), the late UFO bassist Pete Way, and producer/mixer Mike Plotnikoff (AC/DC, My Chemical Romance, Aerosmith), with the legendary Mutt Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard) coming out of retirement to produce.HEAVY got the opportunity to catch up with Henriksen for a face-to-face chat last weekend while he was in Melbourne with Alice Cooper.

Interview by Kris PetersThe general rule of thumb when you hear about a movie having a heavy metal soundtrack is that the music can be expected to take a massive back seat to everything else happening around it.There have been only a few exceptions to the rule - Judgement Night and The Crow spring instantly to mind - but that mold was smashed completely last year with the release of The Retaliators, a Better Noise Film which is an offshoot of the famed Better Noise Music label. When the announcement was made that the horror/action/thriller was to boast a soundtrack including The Hu, Asking Alexandria, Five Finger Death Punch, Eva Under Fire, Nikki Sixx and more, music lovers around the world took notice, buoyed by the promise that songs from these artists would not only punctuate important moments in the movie's storyline, but also be inserted so as to actually enhance the scenes rather than act as a token gesture. That promise/hope was intensified when the movie started doing the promotional rounds, including actual movie acting appearances by several of the bands and artists featured on the soundtrack.Tommy Lee (Mötley Crue), Ivan Moody (Five Finger Death Punch), and Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach) were among the names listed, with Shaddix slated to play the role of one of the movie's central characters.Suddenly metal lovers had a movie that encapsulated everything they love about music and movies, a film where our ilk were treated with respect and necessity rather than a lazy grab at a niche corner of the market. The Retaliators delivered everything it promised and more, with an engrossing storyline, great music and enough gore, horror and action to satiate even the most discerning of viewers. With The Retaliators finally being made available to On Demand services Apple TV and Google TV in Australia and New Zealand late last week, HEAVY felt it appropriate to track down star/co-producer and co-director Michael Lombardi to pick his brain about the movie and the role our beloved heavy metal plays in it. We start by asking what warning label should be placed on The Retaliators for first time viewers."Oh man, there's a few warning labels," he measured. "It's not about bad words. It's not about nudity. It's just about… I think this movie is really twisted, and it gets dark, but then it also doesn't take itself too seriously at times, right? I guess I would hope that there's truth in the film, and it poses a question - as wild as the film gets - and the topic matter will make you think a little, and maybe you can go out for a drink afterward and talk about it a little. On top of that hopefully just being entertained."We press Lombardi on what that question is."The movie poses a question of what would you do if you had a minute alone with the person who hurt your loved one," he explained. "Bottom line is, it happens in this case to a small-town guy who is loved by his community. A man of the cloth and someone you never would expect to have that retaliation in him, but I think we all do as human beings and that's the interesting thing. You put a guy like that in those circumstances and what can happen? He goes on a hell of a journey and from the beginning to the end he completely transforms. There's a bunch of mayhem and craziness on the way to that, but I think what's interesting about it is you can say if someone hurt your child or your niece or your nephew, and you had that minute alone with them, can you take revenge on that person. You know, I think it's easy to wanna say yes if they did something really brutal to you, but then there's the side if you're sitting in a room across from another human being could you really draw blood on that person, or hurt that person. I think it goes there. It's a sensitive subject matter. Even though this movie is hopefully entertaining and kind of twisted there is that underlying message that hopefully allows you to put yourself in that situation."Which demands the question of what would he do after being able to digest the movie for a couple of years."You know, so I have two boys and it certainly helps if you have a child," he deliberated. "But again, even if you don't, people can relate to that with their pets or a niece or nephew. I've been asked this before, and it was the first run of the film which was a while ago, and I haven't talked about the movie a tonne recently which is why this is so beautiful to have a different perspective on it… You know, man, it's interesting because life is tricky, and life is tough. We're all dealing with a lot at all times. I think at certain times of my life I can answer that question and say yes (laughs). This is crazy, I'm being pretty honest here because it's a crazy answer. The answer could be brutal, but I think depending on where you're at in your life - again not with your frustrations or your struggles, but your happiness, your ups and downs - when you're down and certain things happen to you, you might really be in a situation where I don't like people, maybe, so if someone hurt my kid yeah I wanna answer yes. I would be able to do that, but there are other times where I was like, I don't know, man, but for me… (pauses)… yeah, I think I could."In the full interview, Michael talks more about the storyline of The Retaliators, how the effects of playing such a role have stayed with him, putting himself in the character of John Bishop, their goal of turning it into more than just another horror movie with a metal soundtrack, working with Better Noise Films, how he landed the role, using musicians in acting roles and how important that was to the finished result, how they worked each song into the movie to make it relevant to the scene and part of the movie, the possibility of a sequel and more.Access The Retaliators here:https://theretaliators.ffm.to/australiastreaming https://theretaliators.ffm.to/streamingnz

We had the pleasure of interviewing Asking Alexandria over Zoom video!Since 2008, Asking Alexandria, formed and based in the U.K., have paved a path of their own, distilling danger and excess into an equally dangerous hybrid of stadium rock ambition, metallic energy, and electronic ecstasy. Against all odds, they achieved unprecedented success earmarked by two gold-certified singles (namely, “Final Episode (Let's Change The Channel)” and “Not The American Average”), over a billion cumulative streams and views, and three consecutive top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200—Reckless & Relentless [2011], From Death to Destiny [2013], and The Black [2016]. In addition to headlining packed gigs on five continents, they destroyed stages alongside Guns N' Roses, Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Alice In Chains and Slipknot, to name a few. Meanwhile, 2017's self-titled Asking Alexandria spawned two of the group's biggest singles to date: “Alone In A Room” (40 million Spotify streams) and “Into the Fire” (30 million Spotify streams). The quintet—Ben Bruce [guitar, backing vocals], Danny Worsnop [lead vocals], James Cassells [drums], Cameron Liddell [guitar], and Sam Bettley [bass]— saw their first-ever #1 at U.S. radio with the single “Alone Again,” taken from their latest critically acclaimed album See What's On The Inside and a second Top 10 single “Never Gonna Learn” (#6). The band were also featured on the soundtrack for Better Noise Film's 2022 horror-thriller The Retaliators with the track “Faded Out (feat. Within Temptation),” and on the collaborative theme song “The Retaliators Theme (21 Bullets)” alongside Motley Crue, Ice Nine Kills and From Ashes to New. Worsnop also appeared as a guest on Hyro The Hero's “Who's That Playing On The Radio” in addition to Mick Mars.Asking Alexandria recently released their new track "Dark Void" via Better Noise Music. The band will be touring Europe throughout June and will appear at three U.S. rock festivals in July Rock Fest, Inkcarceration Festival, and Louder Than Life.ASKING ALEXANDRIA are currently offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience to shadow the band on tour for a day, including a guitar tech session with BRUCE where the winner will also get to take home the signed guitar, as part of Better Noise Music's “Fan Love Sweepstakes” fundraiser supporting Sweet Relief Musicians Fund's “Music's Mental Health Fund.” The grand prize winner and a guest will receive airfare and a two-night hotel stay to attend the concert, plus they'll receive a pair of VIP tickets to a future ASKING ALEXANDRIA show of their choice (subject to venue availability). This week's edition of THE LOADED RADIO PODCAST features FROM ASHES TO NEW singer Danny Case. FROM ASHES TO NEW hail from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with musician Matt Brandyberry being the founding and sole constant member of the group. The band has released three studio albums, being Day One (2016), The Future (2018), and Panic (2020).  FROM ASHES TO NEW recently delivered an intense and captivating new single “Nightmare,” taken from their upcoming as-yet-titled fourth studio album which is due this summer via Better Noise Music. “Nightmare” masterfully showcases the dual vocal abilities of Brandyberry and singer Danny Case in contrasting heavy rock anthemic choruses with nu-metal/rap rock verses.  “Betrayal by someone we trust happens to the best of us,” says Case. “We befriend someone, let them in, build a connection and then all of a sudden they turn into someone unrecognizable. Someone you once trusted and cared for so deeply is now a backstabbing enemy. In a heartbeat, the person you once thought you knew is now gone. There aren't many things in life that cut quite as deep as betrayal. Erasing that person from your life and moving forward is the only way to wake up from the nightmare.” In the interview, Danny talks about the upcoming album, how he was brought into the band, appearing in a horror movie and more. Also, host Scott Penfold discusses the recent reunion between MEGADETH and former guitarist Marty Friedman which recently took place in Tokyo, Japan. Fans of the "Rust In Peace" era of the band were definitely looking forward to Marty's appearance and Dave Mustaine and comany definitely delivered at the legendary Budokan.

US rock outfit All Good Things are possibly one of the longest overnight success stories ever.Since signing with Better Noise Music in 2019 and releasing their hugely successful album A Hope In Hell - which features the excellent single For The Glory - the band have amassed a number of stadium tours and supports and are finally gaining the global recognition they deserve.Although their tenure started long before that by way of producing music for soundtracks and games, All Good Things have taken this new opportunity with both hands and then some, culminating with the release of their new EP Hold On which comes out on September 23.Hold On is a four track collection of old songs, a cover and an acoustic rendition of the title track and a guest vocal appearance by Flyleaf's Lacey Sturm on the other version, but also holds significance in the timing of the release and its connection with the To Write Love On Her Arms campaign, a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self harm and suicide.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Dan Murphy and bass player Liz Hooper on the eve of the release."This is actually a song off our A Hope In Hell Album that came out a year ago," Murphy began. "We've been chasing the right collab for this song for a long time to be honest and it finally came together. We knew the song was gonna be our next single and we've been trying to find the right voice to team up with. We played a festival in Wisconsin a couple of months back and saw Lacey Sturm play and were blown away. We've always liked Flyleaf for her performances and the speech she gave... she's kind of tied in to the things our fans have been saying and feeling about Hold On and the song itself. Her messages seem to work with what we are trying to get out there so we asked if she would be a part of it and long story short, it all worked out and here we are!"The Hold On EP is also being released this month to coincide with Suicide Awareness month in September, with Hooper admitting the timing was not coincidental."We looked at releasing it around September and we were watching what was happening and it came up that it was suicide prevention month," she affirmed. "A Hope In Hell has been out for about a year now so we've had a chance to play Hold On live at over 100 shows with P.O.D, Starset and Sevendust and we kept getting this feedback from all of our fans and specifically the song Hold On really meant alot to them. Everyone's been through crazy stuff over the last couple of years and people were really connecting with that song and saying it helped them get through some crazy things. A lot of people have talked to us about how they have lost family members to suicide which is heartbreaking. It was kind of serendipitous when we were looking at releasing in September and saw that it was suicide prevention month, so we thought it might be smart to collaborate with somebody that works in that world. We've been to tonnes of festivals and played at tonnes over the years and To Write Love On Her Arms is always there. They've always got a booth. They're always reaching out. They really make the connection between metal music and mental health and how so many people use music, but especially metal music, to deal with lifes stresses. We reached out to them and said you guys are amazing, how can we help get your message out there with our music so that's how we connected."In the full interview Dan and Liz run us through each song on the EP and disect it's meaning, how they each relate to the cause, the Destiny's Child cover of Survivor and why they chose it, having Sturm guest on Hold On and what she brought to the track, their success after the release of A Hope In Hell, a homecoming for the two Australian members and more.

A trend seems to have formed of late, that being, the material in which bands are producing at thispresent time has a certain edge to it, a more refined sound with the quality dialled up all the way to 11!There is reason for it, bands simply have more time to produce the music they want to release right now due to the amounts of “cancellations” everyone in the entertainment industry is experiencing of late.Enter Bad Wolves a band who have been established for a little under half a decade now and are about to drop their third album entitled ‘Dear Monsters' on October 29 th through Better Noise Music. This album packs, as previously said a certain edge and a refined sound to match. The quintet have indeed spent valuable time writing and producing this extremely important album for the bands ever growing discography and it shows!A major piece has also been added to Bad Wolves, a new singer whose name is Daniel DL Lasckiewicz who is previously known for helping define a genre with his contributions to Massachusetts natives The Acacia Strain, a band in which he helped form in 2001. Fast forward 20 years sees DL fronting one of the most existing metal bands on the planet right now, tune into my chat with DL where he talks in-depth about the processes that brought the band to this point.... and man what a ride it has been!

Asking Alexandria have celebrated their signing to Better Noise Music earlier this year with a new album, See What's On The Inside, due out on October 1.Having released the anthemic single Alone Again, Asking Alexandria are already basking in critical praise for See What's On The Inside, an album that the band themselves have publicly stated has galvanized their resolve and allowed them to write and record together for the first time in over a decade.Enigmatic frontman Danny Worsnop joined HEAVY to discuss the album and the fresh approach to recording it.“We wanted to go back to our roots and the place we started, which was, in one form or another, big rock songs,” he explained. “We grew up on that kind of music in the 70s and 80s and kind of the 90s - just big, beautiful rock songs that make people feel. That was the point of this record, both in tone and how we made it as well. We wanted it to be very real, very organic, very... analogue. We wanted to make it feel like a record that when you listen to it you feel like you're in the room."Guitarist Ben Bruce is quoted as saying the album is “a result of the band reconnecting and falling back in love with what started the band in the first place”. I put this to Danny to see if he agrees. “He's a dirty liar!” he laughed, adding “I think the album was a very different thing for each of us, but it was definitely a process that we haven't done in a very long time. We haven't done it like we did now ever! We haven't been in a studio with each other since the very first record and even then, it was a lot of programming and doing stuff digitally. There was a lot of manipulation on everything. There's not one word on that record that sounded like it did when I actually sang it so it was... we were a very, very, very digital band and I think as beautiful as technology is in helping us create more and have access to all these incredible creative tools it can also in many ways sterilize the soul of what you're trying to do and this definitely gave us an opportunity to fall in love with making music in this way and with each other."In the full interview, Danny talks about the album in greater detail, the importance of choosing the right song to open an album, the musical influences on the album and how they gel, the early days of Asking Alexandria and where they fit in musically, their upcoming run of shows and more.

“We didn't plan on being a band of any sort.” Quite the statement from frontman Dan Murphy from rock band All Good Things. Sometimes the best outcomes can and will manifest from things unplanned – As is the case with this Los Angeles based quintet. Dan joins IUF today to talk about all good things, and All Good Things. The goal was simple - to just write music for movies, TV, and video games. That certain goal was beyond reached with having their music featured on many highly popular revered mediums such as Mortal Kombat, The Super Bowl, Shark Tank, Criminal Minds, Vampire Diaries, and a brand new upcoming movie titled Retaliators. The demand from their dedicated growing fanbase got so high that they became an official band. C'mon, wouldn't you? But now, the sky's the limit at this point. Dan also talks about their new and exciting signing for the band with a prominent label like Better Noise Music and collaborating with the likes of Hollywood Undead on their latest single titled “For The Glory.” With times like today, unapologetic victory songs are what the world needs and it only seems fitting that All Good Things provide that soundtrack as we near the light at the end of the tunnel. So many things to look forward to with this band as they continue on this journey. Let All Good Things pave the way for the anthemic positive headbangers down the road and tune into our conversation with Dan Murphy as we also ask him about his favorite video games and movies, which also gave him the influences he needed to write the music he does with his bandmates. We had the pleasure of interviewing Diamante over Zoom video! Diamante spent her teenage years cutting her teeth at local gigs on the Sunset Strip to become the powerhouse performer she is today. A disciple of both P!nk and Guns N' Roses who doesn't fall into rockstar excess tropes or even sport tattoos, she devoted every waking minute to honing a signature "hard rock sound with a modern alternative edge." Her unique and undeniable approach caught the attention of Better Noise Music, which signed her in 2015. She hit the studio with super producer Howard Benson [My Chemical Romance, Halestorm, Kelly Clarkson] to record what would become her full-length debut, Coming In Hot. With the release of her first album, Diamante undeniably stormed the scene in 2018 with a #1 song at rock radio (her collaboration "Hear Me Now" with Bad Wolves), along with a Top 15 song with her own single "Haunted." Now three years later, and after extensive touring with bands like Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Chevelle, and Shinedown, Diamante is back in full force and shining brighter than ever before. In 2019, Diamante parted ways with Better Noise and re-teamed with Howard Benson and Neil Sanderson of Judge & Jury as an independent artist to make her sophomore album American Dream. Diamante capitalized on her newfound and ultimate creative freedom and independence by being her own CEO throughout every facet of the album process. On working with Benson and Sanderson, Diamante praises that they were instrumental in "bringing my stories to life and pushing me to embrace my vulnerabilities." American Dream shows exponential growth from Coming In Hot — both sonically and with its raw authenticity, proving now more than ever that Diamante's fearlessness to bare her soul in her music is what truly sets her apart. Mixing country music with the hard-hitting stomp of rock & roll, Cory Marks prepares to release new music. Full of autobiographical storytelling, guitar-driven anthems, drinking songs, and breakup ballads, his songs are rooted in the influence of Cory's hometown, where he grew up surrounded by the salt-of-the-earth residents of North Bay, Ontario. It was there where he began playing drums at ten years old. Whenever he wasn't banging along to songs by Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rush, he was listening to his parents' country records, developing a deep appreciation for outlaws like Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. Those two genres — classic country and amped-up rock — would eventually join forces in Marks' own music, earning him a string of gigs with heavyweights like Toby Keith and Brantley Gilbert along the way. He is now part of the Better Noise Music family as their flagship Country artist.
