Today is a new day, and a new way for me to podcast. Instead of sharing a piece I've written, or structuring a conversation with several guiding questions, I thought it might be time to experiment with sharing an open-ended conversation I recently had with a close friend whose life experience and knowledge I truly value. His name is Kye Kyllean and, among the many other things he's done with his life, Kye has written a book, "Self-Importance and Bullshitty: Question Everything". We started with a topic close to Kye's heart, darkness, and let the sparks fly. I hope you'll join us...

Part 2 of 3: Self-Importance and the Sovereign Self This one starts with yet another strange, unbidden moment in the life of Ciel— the kind that arrives in the middle of what feels like life falling apart around its edges, when every strategy has run out and something else steps in. This was not a moment I created, nor earned, nor influenced to occur willfully in any sense, but a moment that was gifted to me. That moment is the doorway into this episode — a close look at self-importance not as vanity or arrogance, but as the very lens we look through, the thing that makes us the picture instead of the seer of the picture. I trace what it costs to keep sourcing sideways, from other people's regard (looping this back into the content from episode 2), instead of sourcing down into the earth and up toward what's larger than us. And I ask what becomes possible when that lens finally sets itself down. Part of a three-episode arc that began with Beyond Self-Importance and continues into The Stalker's Tools.

What if: you are not too much, and you are not too little. You are just turned the wrong way. That's the claim this episode makes, and it might not be a comfortable one to sit with. Self-importance gets talked about like it's vanity — too much ego, too much me. But what if it's the opposite of too much self? What if it's a starvation, and the constant checking, measuring, and needing to be seen is just what starvation looks like from the inside? This episode traces that reframe through four unlikely companions and theoretical frameworks: Alan Watts and his image of the self sealed inside its own skin, cut off from the world it actually belongs to; Iain McGilchrist and the two hemispheres of the brain, one built for direct contact with what's real, the other built only to represent and compare; Heinz Kohut and Alice Miller, who spent careers studying what happens to a person when the mirror they needed as a child was never held up true; and Robert Bly, naming a culture of siblings raising each other because the elders never showed up. Four different frameworks, four different vocabularies, but one unified shape underneath: a self that's stopped sourcing itself vertically — up into something larger and more magical and mysterious, and down into the ground it's actually made of — and started sourcing itself sideways instead, off the reactions of the room. That sideways reach is self-importance. Not arrogance, but a misdirected hunger. This is the why episode. It sets the cosmology, the diagnosis, the ache underneath the pattern — without yet handing you the tools to catch it in yourself. That's coming. If you've ever caught yourself needing the room to confirm you're okay, this one's for you. Not to fix that orientation, but just to see it clearly, maybe for the first time.

Meghan Markle has someone announce "Meghan, Duchess of Sussex" when she enters a room—even when she appears to be the only other person there. The Harper's Bazaar detail prompts accusations she's risen to "comic levels of self-importance," with one critic comparing it to the SNL sketch announcing "Lord and Lady Douchebag."She also admits she invited herself to Balenciaga's Paris show. The Kardashian fallout deepens as Kris Jenner reportedly "cannot let slide" the photo deletion request, planning to freeze out the Sussexes from Hollywood. Bethenny Frankel delivers brutal analysis: they tried to put "50 pounds of shit in a five-pound bag." Questions emerge over whether Meghan kept a designer dress from a 2022 photoshoot. Harry felt like "fish out of water" at Jenner's party and now wants to bring the children to UK against Meghan's wishes. Meghan films Thanksgiving video wearing $247,000 in jewelry while glazing turkey in satin gown—in a rented mansion, not her home. The BBC received 728 complaints for calling Kate "Kate Middleton." Kate extends olive branch to Beatrice and Eugenie with carol service invites. Prince George "loved" the apple juice Kate's friend sent home. Andrew ignores Congress testimony request, still eating alone at massive table with silver service. William plans to strip titles from non-working royals and scrap "ridiculous" traditions like velvet robes. Duke of York title likely retired forever—Louis won't get it.Plus: AI deepfakes of the Queen rapping, Diana had tabloids smuggled into palace, and the monarchy adapts while others wonder what adaptation actually requires.Hear our new show "Crown and Controversy: Prince Andrew" here.Check out "Palace Intrigue Presents: King WIlliam" here.

Think self-discipline is the key to success? Think again. Drawing from her own transformation, Hilary explains why self-discipline is the anti-hero of personal growth—restrictive, harsh, and downright unsustainable. Instead of relying on rigid rules and unrealistic expectations, Hillary introduces the concept of self-devotion—a compassionate, loving, and sustainable approach to achieving your goals. Think of self-devotion as the unwavering commitment you'd expect from a devoted partner but turned inward. When you show up for yourself out of love, not obligation, everything shifts. Whether you're looking to crush your resolutions, build a thriving business, or create a healthier lifestyle and body, Hillary's approach to self-devotion is the game-changer you've been waiting for.   Episode Highlights: Why self-discipline is more harmful than helpful. As a professor who has achieved everything I ever wanted, I reached a turning point. (I realize how self-important that sounds)I have accomplished most of what I set out to do—publishing papers, mentoring students, and making my mark in academia. But, I realized that the weight of self-importance was heavier than any accolade. I bought into the system. I thought I was someone important. But, ultimately to continue to walk forward, I have to acknowledge that I'm really NOT that important.I have to step back from the notion that everything depends on me.I learned to say, "It's not my problem," and began to release the constant urge to intervene or help. This shift wasn't about “apathy”, but about understanding that the world continues to spin without my constant input. By removing the feeling of self-importance, I found a newfound freedom and peace. It allows me to embrace humility, accepting my small place in the world—if any.Letting go can be the most profound way to move forward.I can take a picture of something random—realizing that my playing and thinking has little to do with who reads this.People that have not been in my position won't understand what I'm talking about and will get upset.Ultimately, you have to acknowledge you are just moments from no one even remembering who you are.

When we meet new people, we're often drawn to those with a commanding presence or a dazzling personality. But it turns out that a very different trait — humility — is important in the long term. This week, in the first of a two-part discussion, we talk with psychologist Daryl Van Tongeren about different kinds of humility, and how this overlooked quality can play a powerful role in workplace dynamics and romantic relationships. If you like today's episode, be sure to check out part two of our conversation, exclusively for Hidden Brain+ listeners. We talk with Daryl Van Tongeren about existential humility — being open to the idea we might be wrong about life's biggest unknowns. It's the episode called "Asking the Big Questions." The Reality Revolution Podcast

SO many of the ills of the world are due to hurt feelings and worry over what other people say and do that we need a new motto. Let us try this, "Nothing matters." Jesus exclaims, "What is that to thee? Follow thou me.". That has nothing to do with you unless you allow it. Why do you allow yourself to worry and fuss if someone seems preferred before you ? There is enough for you to do. You have your place somewhere. What does it matter to you if your neighbor does act unneighborly ? He won't have the opportunity to hurt you unless you care. Why should you go about with an aching heart because people won't take your advice, or insist on doing things in a different way from that which you approve? Will that change them any? Suppose that some member of your family is a bit uncouth or even rude, don't you see that you are only aggravating it by "caring?" When you show your indifference, not defiantly, but by really not "allowing it to matter," you will see the things change. You say, business is going wrong and I must worry! Worry will only hasten the end. You need to save yourself so that you will have a clear mind to act in case of emergency or a change for the better. Say, "nothing matters."

SHOW NOTES: On this show… we aim to tickle your ego, prod your self-importance, and maybe even burst that bubble of self-delusion just a little. Ego you say? What ego? Well, ego isn't just a one-size-fits-all deal; it's a complex, colorful, and downright funky part of what makes us human.  We're gonna explore the ego's many faces, from the subtle whispers of self-doubt to the grandiose declarations of "I am the center of the universe!" Whether you need to put your ego in check or someone else's, egos play a multifaceted and important role in our lives. While they can sometimes be associated with negative traits like arrogance or self-centeredness, ego is a fundamental aspect of human psychology. Defined, ego is a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance. It's the core of our self-identity. It helps us differentiate ourselves from others and develop a sense of who we are as individuals. It's the foundation upon which we build our self-concept, which includes our beliefs, values, and personal narratives. Wow, ego has some pretty big shoulders and shoes to fill. So what happens when it's left unchecked and goes astray? Enter the need for humility. Humility is the absence of ego. A modest or low view of one's importance; humbleness. So how can you strike a healthy balance? Self-awareness. Let's dig in to better understand the differences and the scale to narrow the gap. Over at pathwaytohappiness.com, I found a good introduction; About Ego
