The first game in the BioShock series, it was released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 platforms in August 2007; a PlayStation 3 port by Irrational, 2K Marin, 2K Australia and Digital Extremes was released in October 2008. The game is set in 1960, and follows Jack who discovers the underwater city of Rapture. Built by business magnate Andrew Ryan to be an isolated utopia, the discovery of ADAM, a genetic material which grants superhuman powers, initiated the city's turbulent decline. Jack attempts to escape, fighting ADAM-obsessed enemies and Big Daddies, while engaging with the few sane humans that remain and learning of Rapture's past. The player, as Jack, can defeat foes in several ways by using weapons, utilizing plasmids that give unique powers, and by turning Rapture's defenses against them. BioShock received universal acclaim and was particularly praised by critics for its narrative, themes, visual design, setting, and gameplay. It is considered to be one of the greatest video games ever made and a demonstration of video games as an art form. Bioshock was followed by two sequels, BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite, released in 2010 and 2013, respectively. A remastered version of the game was released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch as part of BioShock: The Collection. ________________________________________________________________________ Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. An advocate for diversity and inclusion, she has created several groups within both the engineering and the gaming/anime space for people regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation to feel safe and meet other people with similar interests. Joy Ajayi - Through my lens Joy Ajayi is a gameplay programmer with experience in game engines such as Unity and Unreal engine 4. She is currently pursuing her B.Eng. in Computer Engineering at Covenant University in Nigeria. She is also a Women in Games Ambassador and advocate for women in the gaming scene in Nigeria and Africa. She also volunteers at game industry events, and helped in the organising of the recently concluded Africacomicade Gamathon. Liz Wright Liz Wright is a Client Side Programmer at Mediatonic. During her four years in the industry, she was the lead programmer for the acclaimed puzzle detective game Murder by Numbers, and pioneered the development of a new cross project build system (earning her the title of Build Master at Mediatonic). Her achievements in these areas earned her a spot in MCV's 30 under 30 list in 2019. Liz now works with the Central Services team, and uses scalable core tech to support weird and wonderful games. Alexis Russell My gaming passion started at age 5 when my dad gave me an N64, and while I’ve played my entire life, I didn’t start seriously thinking about a gaming career until university. Over my last five years in the industry, I’ve been fortunate to work on some exciting projects, such as Bioshock: The Collection, God of War, Just Cause 4, and now the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West. Outside of games, I like to do a lot of hands-on crafts - cooking, origami, weaving - but not all of them well. Danielle Udogaranya - Bringing Culture to the Sims (@EbonixSims) Danielle is a Content Creator, Twitch Partner, EA Game Changer and self-taught 3D artist. Since 2015, Danielle took it upon herself to learn 3D modelling so that she could create hairs, clothes and accessories so that she could feel represented in games that she frequented, such as The Sims 4. Sharing her content with others, who also didn’t feel represented, brought her a community who shared her concerns about the lack of content available to create characters that look like them. Dani has since developed a vast follow base and become an advocate for diversity and representation in gaming and has been featured on BBC Africa, BBC World News, The Guardian, Red Bull Gaming, Polygon, Eurogamer, Quirktastic, Dazed, TwoFiveSix and more for her afrocentric content. She advocate for gaming diversity and representation, and her goal is to enable POC to see themselves represented in every game, not just The Sims.

Despite the terrible and borderline distasteful marketing, Euan discovers that the Battlefield 1 Open Beta seems pretty much exactly what you expect. The new Destiny expansion, Rise of Iron, doesn't give the game as much of a kick as it really needs to Virginia is a fantastic narrative experience that pulls off some adventurous design choices. Calum finished Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and is not happy about it. We both jumped back into Lost Planet 2, and still maintain that game is great. In News... Wildcard have released paid DLC for Ark: Survival Evolved into Early Access, despite the game itself still being in Early Access. The latest update for the PC version of Street Fighter V installed a rootkit, which is a real bad idea. There is an expansion for 2015 favourite Hacknet coming in December It's currently not possible to stream any of Bioshock: The Collection, and it really feels like 2K are hiding the reason. Square Enix is making a HTC Vive game, and it looks like it's going to be a card battler. Amidst the new Pokemon Sun and Moon announcements, a new Digimon game coming, Naruto, Misou Stars, and other things from there, surprisingly other news abounds. Many of those things are game delays from Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and Last Guardian to South Park: Fractured Butt Whole and more. There have been layoffs at Sony’s San Diego studio, best known for the MLB: The Show series. The 1998 unreleased Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clan leaked online. There’s even more movies based on Video Games coming out too. Monster Hunter is getting a film and so is Resident Evil, but thankfully it is of the CGI variety. Marc talks more about World of Warcraft: Legion, testing out Overwatch, and playing Bioshock: The Collection.

The Joy of Gaming Podcast, Episode 56: Nintendo NX and the Attack of the HD Remasters We (Rich, Jordan and Kelsey) are back and better than ever, with a super-sized new episode of the Joy of Gaming Podcast! And here in the calm after the storm that was this year's E3 and San Diego Comic-Con conventions, there's quite a bit to talk about - most notably, the recent rumors surrounding the Nintendo NX, big news on the Sonic the Hedgehog and Hearthstone fronts, and a number of exciting new game releases. But if there was one theme that emerged again and again at this year's big gaming events, it was that of the "HD Remaster". What's old will truly be new again over the next few years, as the games of yesteryear are re-released on today's consoles - but is this a good thing for the industry? We'll let you know what we think.  But first, it's been a while since our last episode, and we have a lot of games to discuss. First on the agenda is Zero Time Dilemma, the final entry in the Zero Escape "thrill"-ogy of visual novel games. This time, however, series writer/director Uchikoshi has taken the game in a number of new and different directions (literally), and we've got more than a few strong opinions to share on the subject. Next, we dive headfirst into a discussion of the other games we've been playing, including: Song of the Deep, Pokemon Go, Hearthstone, Mighty Number 9, The Banner Saga, The Division, Splatoon, The Binding of Issaac: Afterbirth, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Just Cause 3, and many more.  And then, just when you think this episode couldn't get any "gamier," we move to the main event.  From the reveal of 2K's Bioshock: The Collection, to the announcement (and subsequent delay) of the Batman: Return to Arkham collection, to the staggering success of the recent re-release of Red Dead Redemption (as a backwards compatible game on Xbox One), to the ridiculous anticipation already brewing for the forthcoming The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition and beyond, one thing is clear: HD Remasters, Re-releases and "Ultimate Collections" of relatively recent games are coming in greater numbers than ever, and from just about every major publisher. But is this trend just another avenue for enjoying our favorite games, or a foreboding sign that developers are abandoning the development of new IP for the cheaper and safer alternative of re-issuing past favorites? We discuss the topic in depth, including a list of our favorite remasters of all time, our individual wishlists for games to be remastered in the future, and our thoughts on what ingredients make for a successful remaster.  And you know what? That doesn't even scratch the surface of what this episode has in store. It has more games, more excitement, and more Cory Barlog than any episode that has come before. This week Grif's fallen back into her Fallout 4 addiction. She totally tuned out everything while working on the Automatron DLC because who needs real life when there are robots involved? Chicken and Baka are still in Overwatch bliss. When they aren't playing Overwatch, they're back to World of Warcraft. Blizzard definitely knows how to keep them hooked! Grif was ecstatic over the announcement of Bioshock: The Collection. So much so that she may ditch Chicken on his birthday just to get her plasmid fix. Call of Duty is getting dragons. Yeah, none of our hosts get it either. Resident Evil 7 isn't a ghost story but no one know exactly what it is yet. And since the the fourth of July is right around the corner, everyone shares their outrageous stories about fireworks and a total disregard for personal safety. PSA kids, don't try this at home...
