"A long, long time ago I lived, briefly, in Indiana working as a newspaper reporter. Working the late shift there weren't a lot of drinking options for a post-shift beer. Thankfully there was a brewpub not far from the office that would stay open late and on most nights I'd find Dave Colt and Clay Robinson working on recipes and plotting their own brewery. The brewery would become Sun King, and is one of the largest in Indiana with a growing footprint, multiple locations, and a commitment to quality and irreverence that is unrivaled. It's been fun to watch the brewery grow and rack up awards, and as I was thinking about this week's show, I noticed a can of Cherry Busey, the brewery's Flander's Red ale on my desk. So calling up Dave Colt and Andrew Hood, who runs the barrel program, seemed like a smart move. From talking about how the program has grown, to new avenues the brewery has explored – including a spot in Florida, it's a wide ranging and fun romp through Central Indiana and beyond."-John HollThis Episode is Sponsored By:Harpoon BreweryDid you know that Harpoon IPA is New England's Original IPA?Brewed in Boston and Vermont for decades by their Employee Owners.Hoppy, crisp, perfectly balanced.Harpoon IPA: New England's Original IPA.Denver Rare Beer TastingHeading to Colorado for GABF? We open up the metal floodgates to discuss children's books from Sam Carter of Architects and Matt Heafy of Trivium/Ibaraki on the horizon, Grand Rapids, MI catching one hell of a Lamb of God show and throwing down in the Knotverse for the Metal News of the Week. New Music includes Buffalo suplex metal, death metal rising from the grave, staying grounded with Northlane, attending A Wake in Providence, and the sickest Lilac you'll ever encounter. Chris was fortunate enough to hold a game-used Babe Ruth bat during his tour at the Louisville Slugger factory but might have to alter his travel plans due to a diesel shortage in the Northeast. Nick is excited that he and his wife picked a location for their first no-kids trip in a while. He also has some BIG news that he can't give too many details about at the moment. John went to a very special graduation for one of his wife's favorite students but had to give some hard news to his boss. We discuss interesting beverages we've had recently including a spicy Mexican lager from Sun King Brewing in Indianapolis, a multitude of Mexican lagers for Nick, and an interesting sweet potato ale from Fitzhugh. Each of us then gives our personal theme song. John tells a story about going to Fenway and sitting in front of the Boston version of the Sandlot kids. Then he hits us with a dad joke. Finally, he discusses the sometimes sticky situation when you are trying to balance being the child of your parents but the parent of your child. The featured beer style this week is the blood orange IPAs, and we taste the phenomenal Bloodwork Orange from Austin Beerworks. As always, thank you for listening.

In November of 2021, Sun King Brewing Co-Founders Clay Robinson and Dave Colt joined High Alpha Partner Mike Fitzgerald for a fireside chat about the brewing industry, building strong company cultures, and the origin of Sun King Brewing, the largest brewery in Indianapolis and the second largest brewery in the state. Dave and Clay have both been brewing professionally for more than 20 years. Since opening Sun King in 2009, their brewery has won more Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup medals than any other Indiana brewery. In fact, Sun King ranks in the top five of all medal recipients worldwide. Most recently, Sun King was awarded the Grand Champion Brewery at the 2019 U.S. Open Beer Championship. In this episode, we revisit their Speaker Series interview, where you'll learn: The origin story of Sun King How they prioritize putting people and the community first as a business The importance of transparency with your team Their philosophy for coaching their team to follow their passions (even if it's not at Sun King)

Roll initiative! The Bros are bringing you a special pairing this week straight from their journeys to the land of Indianapolis for the 54th running of Gencon! Quick, what name is synonymous with Role Playing games? If you said E. Gary Gygax, then you paid attention to the title of this episode! Yes, we found a poem by none other than E. Gary Gygax and while it doesn't nearly do the brilliance of this gaming mind justice, it shows that in the end rules were way more beneficial to Gygax's career than poetry ever could have been. Paired with the history of Gygax we're looking at Sun King Brewing's "Genevieve," which is the official beer of Gencon. Sit back and find a brew to pair with this episode, and as always, enjoy.Cheers!
In this episode, Jason talks about one of his favorite turtles, the Beast of 'Busco. Jason reads witness accounts of cryptid sightings in Churubusco, IN and Jon rants about regional accents. Not adhering to any sort of ‘caveman’ or ‘cavernous’ trend in the current climate, this album harkens back to the early FL and Dutch death metal scene as well as nods to U.K., Scandinavia, New York, touches vicious thrash and riff oriented traditional heavy metal to go along with an unhinged acidic vocal style. Some bands have trouble fitting into one genre and even shun the idea of sticking to a single style of music. Indianapolis based Carmichael is no exception. When pressed, the members of Carmichael say they feel closest to the Americana sound. A step softer than rock, a notch harder than folk, and a sound that stops just short of going full country - the band prides themselves on making music that can bounce between genres. Stay tuned right after the session for an interview with the band from WFYI's Scott McAlister. Small Studio is made possible with support from Sun King Brewing.

So many breweries in start-up mode have a crystal clear vision for their future. But as they mature, and as the market shifts, and as those early days start to feel farther and farther away, we find out what a brewery is really made of. Do they stick with that adolescent firebrand kind of rhetoric? Or do they adopt a more practical outlook on what’s possible—and even desirable—for a craft brewery? For most, it’s somewhere in between. In today’s market, a more diverse set of business models are available than ever before. Factor in changing state laws and consumer demand, and that vision for what a craft brewer can be is evolving quickly. What previously seemed counter to craft now seems perfectly permissible—encouraged, even. Just look at how the conversation around contract brewing—now oftentimes referred to as "gypsy" brewing—has shifted over time. That’s an easy one, but what about things like cold storage? Staying local? And the recent interest in employee ownership and what they says about succession planing? Are we open to our ideas on those opinions changing too? We better be. Today’s guest is Clay Robinson of Sun King, a guy who’s gone on the record early and often about what he would and wouldn’t do. And today, most of that, in hindsight, was short-sighted. But he’s not letting it hold him back. Instead, he’s casting off the burden of his former outlook and working hard to embrace a future where he thinks practically about his business, adopts a never-say-never attitude, and starts looking at things like grocery chains, conventional distribution, ESOP and acquisitions pros and cons, even distilling, as his potential growth plan going forward. This conversation is a wild ride through so many of the issues small breweries are wrestling with today, and Clay handles it with an uncanny transparency. I’m thankful I got a chance to sit down with him and hash out the details.
Greetings listeners! We may have hit a new low with this episode. We start things off with Demonik from Carson's Brewing out of Evansville, Indiana. The group believes there was something wrong with the six pack we obtained from our booze shop. However, much like with our Flat 12 beer, we consumed and rated this beverage. Rest assured though, Carson's Brewing will get another sampling and review and they still do stand out as one of the group's favorite Indiana breweries. That being said, the review was not great. We then partake of Shorts Bellaire Brown Ale. Adam's description of the bottle is about what you'd expect from him, as is the review in general.Speaking of Adam, he then discusses dog years, polar bear licensing, and seeks to apply for a job at the Smithsonian. If you want to learn how polar produce Coca-Cola, and how to get a polar bear license from the BMV, be sure to listen to this episode! Also, vote for Justin Jay McIntosh for best local 2d artist here: http://nuvo.secondstreetapp.com/l/Best-of-Indy-2016-NominationsAnd lastly, happy 7th birthday to Sun King Brewing!

As the boys, D Fresh, Cowboy, Pauly G, and Jordan were on their road trip to Memphis, Hunter got some help from a few of the guys of the Pig Pen to help him cover this fantastic annual event for the benefit of Indy’s Arts for Learning. Big thanks to the Pen, Riley M. Wunnenberg and Roberto Cavazos Jr. for stepping up and helping out to host while the boys were away. Roberto's buddy, from Hockeytown, Mr. Scott Klemm, also jumped on board to help co-host with Hunter. Another night of music, artisanal pizza, and craft beer from some of the best of Indiana was enjoyed once again to the sold out crowd. Tune is as the gang gets some fresh news from MashCraft Brewery, CenterPoint Brewing, Donatos Pizza, Round Town Brewery, Girls Pint Out, Haley Baas of Arts for Learning(Thanks for having us out again!), and the Indy Drinking Team.
