What began with a few DMs dunking on misleading “cover crop” Instagram posts—or maybe even earlier, on Napa Valley school bus rides more than 25 years ago—has grown into something much bigger: a groundbreaking tasting event focused on the future of responsible winegrowing. In this first-ever crossover episode of The Wine Makers Podcast and Bedrock Conversations, Katie Bundschu, Morgan Twain-Peterson MW, and Sam Coturri join Chris Cotrell, Alli Badar, Brian Casey, and Bart Hansen to introduce S.O.R.B.E.T.—the Sonoma Organic Regenerative Biodynamic Education Tasting. This inaugural event celebrates Sonoma Valley's critical role in sustainable and ecological winegrowing—past, present, and future. The only two rules for participation: 1) Wines must be farmed organically, regeneratively, or biodynamically. 2) Wines must come from Sonoma Valley. The result? A dynamic mix of wineries—from garagistes to corporate producers, from emerging natural wine stars to established legacy brands—offering everything from edgy small-batch bottles to ultra-premium pours. The crew shares the origin of the event, what it means for the region, and why this kind of collective action is more important than ever. [EP 367] Save the Date: August 17th at Fort Mason, San Francisco. Get tickets here: Eventbrite – S.O.R.B.E.T. The Ireland Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI) has announced that it is prioritising social good with a partnership with the Irish Emergency Alliance. Established in 2018 and active in 95 of the world's poorest countries, the Irish Emergency Alliance aims to help, save and rebuild the lives of those affected by major emergencies across the globe. As well as a growing alliance - which currently includes ActionAid, Christian Aid, Plan International, Self Help Africa, Tearfund Ireland, Trócaire and World Vision - it has responded to five catastrophic emergencies and raised over €6.75 million. Helping this effort, the Ireland Chapter of PMI encourages its chapters across the world to undertake social good, locally and internationally. It promotes the great work of the Irish Emergency Alliance, provides expert volunteer resources to support its mission, and partakes in fundraising events for the organisation. As part of this, the Irish Emergency Alliance is one of the first charities in Europe to be recognised as part of Project Managers Without Borders (PMWB), a worldwide initiative by PMI which partners project managers with not-for-profit and non-government organisations to affect change and empower communities. The partnership also enables the Irish Emergency Alliance to access volunteers and project managers within the Ireland Chapter of PMI who have domain knowledge in other areas such as finance, IT and marketing. To support the partnership and its own efforts in the area of social good, the Ireland Chapter of PMI has also recently appointed a new Director of Social Good, Carlos Mandolesi. He will be responsible for overseeing its volunteering activities and expanding its charity partnerships. Peter Glynne, President of the Ireland Chapter of PMI, said: "Our aim is to engage people, embrace social good, and elevate the impact of the project management profession - and there is no greater impact than helping those in need. The work that the Irish Emergency Alliance does is nothing short of incredible and it is an honour to be able to get involved in and support what they do. From us donating the proceeds of one of our ticketed events to the Irish Emergency Alliance to them getting involved in our National Project Awards, it's all about collaborating and making a difference together." Brian Casey, Executive Director of the Irish Emergency Alliance, added: "We want to do even more for communities and people whose lives have been devastated by emergencies, be that raising money or having people on the ground. As a small membership organisation, we can only do that with the help of our partners, including the Ireland Chapter of PMI. By tapping into the enormous potential that a shared response unleashes, we have been able to - and hope to continue to - react with agility, work with agencies, and provide much-needed emergency support." Gemma Hayes, from Tipperary and now living in West Cork, released her sixth studio album Blind Faith on September 27. It's her first album in 10 years - Gemma says she has reasons for the break: she simply lost the urge to write and was busy raising two children. We talk about all that - how she literally locked away her guitars and subsequently lost confidence in her ability to make music - in this interview. Produced by Hayes with Karl Odlum, David Odlum and Brian Casey from Wavefield Recording Studio in Clonakilty, Blind Faith features Lisa Hannigan on backing vocals on ‘Eye For An Eye' and ‘Feed The Flames', which she also co-wrote, while Paul Noonan duets with Gemma on ‘Another Love'. --- From the press release: The youngest of eight children raised in the small village of Ballyporeen, Co Tipperary, Gemma Hayes' introduced herself to the world with her 2002 debut Night On My Side. With its deft production, ambitious arrangements and Hayes' dreamy, rock-leaning vocal delivery, the album was a critical and commercial success and was nominated for the Mercury Prize (now known as the Choice Music Prize). Since then, she has released four critically acclaimed studio albums and a limited-edition live album, while her music is constantly in demand for film and TV placements. Her version of Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game', recorded for the US TV series Pretty Little Liars, now has over 24 million streams on Spotify alone, while she recently contributed to the soundtrack of the film adaptation of Roddy Doyle's Greyhound of a Girl. Once there was a very smart man who lived in Ancient Rome. He wrote a book called Naturalis Historia and for the next 1400 years, it was the best book ever. Everyone had a copy, read it, and referred to it. Why? Because it contained everything ever known about the whole world. And who doesn’t want that on their shelf? But just how good was it, and how much did Pliny the Elder really know? Was he the authority on everything? Or was he just a second rate collector of information who got lucky? Due to some extra out of state business travels via the 9 to 5 AND the music ends during the past few weeks, here the latest FLASHBACK episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast for the weeks of Dec. 6 & 13, 2017 [originally broadcast on the week August 20, 2008] with some new and classic music from the international Black Diaspora, news and commentary. During that week, we had a great interview with author Douglas A. Blackmon for his book, "Slavery By Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II" (now currently out on Doubleday Books), which "brings to light one of the most shameful chapters in American history—when a cynical new form of slavery was resurrected from the ashes of the Civil War and re-imposed on hundreds of thousands of African-Americans until the dawn of World War II" by throwing Black Men, Women and Children into prison in the South for labor purposes under false pretenses to be arrested. Brian Casey scores for The Wine Makers, bringing our good friend Kieran Robinson from Kieran Robinson Wines as our guest this episode. Kieran’s fascinating background, from Phili to the Cotie Rotie, has given him a true appreciation for the deep-rooted French and American viticulture and winemaking philosophies. This paper rests conceptually on a borrowing from sociology, principally a 2011 article by Evelyn Nakano Glenn, 'Constructing citizenship: exclusion, subordination and resistance'. The talk examines examines how, in post-1922 Ireland, southern Irish Protestants approached acquiring a sense of citizenship in the new Ireland. In this, they had to bridge a potentially disastrous disconnection with Ireland, complicated by a genuine geographical patriotism, an inherent uneasiness with an ascendant 'National Catholicism', and a strong sense of otherness. It is argued, though, that, culturally, Protestants had a rather generous a la carte menu of 'belongingness' to draw upon. This allowed them to construct a sense of congenial citizenship through a mixture of 'real' and 'imagined' communities in appropriate and acceptable proportions as circumstances demanded. In this, it will also be argued that this facility to construct a 'mix-and-match' notion of Irishness gave Protestants a much greater flexibility in determining their own sense of citizenship than those who had perforce to exist within a straitjacket of rigid Catholic-nationalist orthodoxy. The overspill from this has been a somewhat surprising ability for Protestants to come to a relatively comfortable accommodation with Irishness, and a sense of civitas that has been better able to adapt to the modern world. Ian d’Alton, MA (NUI), PhD (Cambridge), FRHistS, FRNS is a historian who has been researching southern Irish Protestantism for over forty years, latterly through the medium of the literary. He has given numerous papers to learned bodies He is the author of Protestant Society and Politics in Cork, 1812-1844 (Cork UP, 1980). His latest attempt to synthesise the southern Protestant experience is ‘A first voice: Henry Windsor Villiers Stuart and the agricultural labourers’ in Brian Casey (ed.), Defying the law of the land: agrarian radicals in Irish history (Dublin, The History Press, 2013). He is working on a book about the Royal Historical Society’s Alexander Prize, and its influence on British historiography, 1897-2005 (he was a recipient of the Prize in 1972). He was a contributor and editorial advisor to the Royal Irish Academy/Cambridge University Press Dictionary of Irish Biography (2009), and wrote the entries, amongst others, for Thomas Lipton (he of the tea), the ‘Ponsonby estate’ landlord A.H. Smith Barry, and the writers Elizabeth Bowen, Iris Murdoch and Molly Keane. In 2011-12 he was an honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool; in 2014 a Visiting Fellow at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and in 2014-15, a Visiting Research Fellow at Trinity College, University of Dublin. At end-February 2012, he retired from the positon of Chief Executive Officer of the Housing Finance Agency, an Irish state-owned company.
