Catherine Beard is SVP of Alternatives Consulting at Callan, the investment consultants. She has had a long career in investment consulting and allocation with a particular focus on private credit and is based in Chicago. Catherine is a veteran of the private credit arena, having cycled through time on a bond trading desk at a hedge fund, and having the irreplaceable experience of being "in the room where it happened" in the financial crisis of 2008. We briefly tour through her roots in Kentucky and growing up in a family of bankers, then explore her rise in the ranks of finance. The good, the bad and the ugly of the hedge fund world pre and post 2008 is dissected as only Catherine can - with candor, realism and a good dose of humor. We move then to her move into consulting and a spell at an allocator where she built a private credit portfolio before pivoting back into the consulting role. We talk about the private credit opportunity set, distinguish what is sustainable and here for the long haul from the fly-by-night fad strategies.  We look inside the mindset not only of an allocator but also of a credit investor and ask what it takes to stay to course. Some of this includes pattern recognition, and how to flex one's entrepreneurial muscle even within a large firm, because entrepreneurial instincts rarely die away. We look at the strain that can come from M&A at a firm level, and how cultures don't always meld and can ultimately destroy each other. One plus one can sometimes be negative. Finally we turn to Catherine's personal reflections, which may be summed up by the great French icon Edith Piaf, "Je Ne Regrette Rien".  Given Catherine's love of all things French and her inspiring sense of adventure it is a fitting creed for a bold and adventurous career.Series 1 of 2024 is supported by Apollo Global Management, a leading provider of alternative asset management and retirement services solutions. Businesses are being hit by massive rises to their power bills as dry weather and a natural gas shortage wreak havoc in the electricity market.Hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra costs are hitting firms as they look to renew their fixed power contracts.Christchurch-based firm Enztec employs 70 people to design and manufacture high-end medical instruments for the global orthopaedic market. It usually operates on a fixed electricity contract with its suppliers, to avoid the volatility of spot prices. But its chief executive Iain McMillan said it had struggled to get a new deal since its previous contract ended in February."We have had one company being prepared to negotiate a contract with us and we're still actively working on that."But several of the large supply companies basically said they did not have capacity to supply and therefore wouldn't even put an offer to the table."Enztec is now stuck paying spot prices which are more than 50 percent higher than a year ago, according to the energy consultancy firm Energy Link. This is because the country had been suffering from outages at several gas fields since December, dry weather to start the year and low hydro lake levels.Enztec's monthly power bill had about doubled but it was unable to pass these costs onto its customers because the price of its products are fixed. As a consequence, McMillan said Enztec would have to reduce spending on research and development because it had no idea when the upward pressure on power prices may ease.Enztec's situation was not unique with more firms saying they were at the mercy of high wholesale electricity prices.RNZ understands the new power contract for supermarket operator Foodstuffs is 70 percent more expensive. The company would not comment on the specifics, but in a statement its North Island chief executive Chris Quin said it had seen significant increases in its power bill."The combination of price increases is affecting our stores across the board, large and small, and a lot of effort is going into trying to find efficiencies to manage prices to consumers."It is particularly hard for our smaller stores with a number of cost impacts from recent policy changes, compliance costs, talent shortages and supply chain costs," he said.RNZ also spoke to the chief executive of a large commodity business, who did not want to be named, who said he thought he got off lightly when its new contract only rose by 43 percent.Another company with offices nationwide, who would not comment on the record, said it was facing price hikes of several hundred thousand dollars per year.Employers and Manufacturers Association head of advocacy Alan McDonald said it is consumers who would ultimately pay."[The high power prices are] going to find its way through into prices of consumer goods and other goods, alongside things like supply chain pressures, wage pressures, the whole Covid background to everything,"RNZ approached some of the power companies for comment on this story and only Meridian responded. It said it acknowledged the effect high wholesale power prices were having on large customers who were coming off their contracts.Meridian said it continues to offer fixed price contracts and would work with its customers to provide solutions that, to the extent possible, insulated them from price increases. The Electricity Authority's general manager of market policy Andy Doube said it was investigating prices in the wholesale market to ensure they were competitive. However, he said spot prices were inherently volatile."When we do have dry years, such as the one we do, coupled with the gas issues that are being experienced out of Pohukura, we do expect the market will start pricing scarcely and I think that's some of the prices we're seeing at the moment."text by Nicholas Pointon, RNZ

Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta has spoken out again on the China issue, telling exporters they need to diversify to protect themselves against cooling relations with China. She compared tensions between Australia and China to a storm, and warned that if Australia is near the eye of the storm there's a possibility the storm could easily engulf New Zealand.Catherine Beard, executive director of Export NZ, told Heather du Plessis-Allan that the comments are stronger than normal, and could be as a result of her being in the UK and getting quizzed by Five Eyes partners. "It's certainly a message we've heard before in New Zealand, so it's no surprise to us, and it makes sense to have diversified markets and spread your risk."She says that politicians don't want to be held accountable for a calamity in the export scene, and most exporters are aware of this. Beard says that the revenue earned out of China by New Zealand exporters is "a fairly narrow band" of the big commodity exporters, such as dairy and logs. "They tend to have reasonable diversified markets anyway." LISTEN ABOVE

The Government will allow 1000 foreign students to enter the country from April as part of the recovery plan for international education, it has been announced.Education Minister Chris Hipkins said the students must be part-way through a degree or postgraduate course and would have to pay for the cost of their time in managed isolation.Education providers have been lobbying the Government to reopen the border to foreign students, who are worth more than $5 billion a year to the economy.Hipkins said priority would be given to students who were closest to completing their qualification."The students will return to New Zealand in phases, beginning with a cohort of 300 that will be able to return from April, with the remaining students returning throughout the year as MIQ availability allows," he said."The return of these students will not affect the ability of Kiwis to return home and it is balanced against the requirement for skilled workers to enter the country. They will be subject to the same border rules and quarantine regime as all other arrivals - with any additional restrictions depending on where they come from."Education Minister Chris Hipkins says the move is worth $49 million to the economy. Photo / Mark MitchellHipkins said the Government's top priority was the health, safety and wellbeing of all people in New Zealand and it had a responsibility to carefully balance its decisions, to support New Zealand's economic recovery."This border exception delivers on a part of the recovery plan for international education. It underscores the Government's commitment to the international education sector, which is important in the country's long-term economic recovery from Covid-19," he said.Hipkins said the students would need to book their space through the allocation system and would be billed the standard charges for managed isolation."They also need to be able to do more to support themselves in New Zealand, with the living expenses that are required for international students to be granted a visa now raised to $20,000 - up from $15,000," he said.He said the annual economic value of 1000 degree-level international students was estimated to be roughly $49 million in wider economic contribution, including approximately $27 million in tuition fees.Text by By RNZ

I'm really excited to be sitting down with Catherine Beard of The Blissful Mind this week to talk about the importance of mindfulness and self-care, two topics that I have become pretty focused on as of late. Our conversation starts with the power of awareness, as Catherine shares how mindfulness found its way into her life and what it's changed as a result. We also talk about the difference between mindfulness and meditation, as well as the tools that allow you to be more mindful in your everyday life. We round out the conversation with a discussion about self-care and mindfulness and how they are integral pieces of the same puzzle. And while all of those things are pretty darn great, my favorite part about this conversation is how Catherine is able to make mindfulness approachable and grounded in our current reality. Because without mindfulness, life becomes a never-ending sprint to the finish line of acquiring more things without really pausing to appreciate the journey that got you there. I’d love to hear from you! What stood out most from Catherine’s interview? What role does mindfulness play in your own life?   Topics Discussed: An introduction to Catherine Beard and what she does How Catherine got into mindfulness by way of minimalism and a capsule wardrobe The power of awareness and how that has changed Catherine's journey Knowing better versus doing better Our daily choices and how routines help to keep you on track How to create a morning or evening routine that works for you The difference between meditation and mindfulness Easy ways to infuse more mindfulness into your day Mindfulness and eating — finding a way to slow down and savor each bite Self-care and how that relates to mindfulness Consumer-based self-care versus true holistic self-care Self-care versus laziness and where do you draw the line The chicken and egg question around self-care and mindfulness The boundaries between work and play and how mindfulness plays a role Mindfulness and religion. Is there room for both? Understanding how asset allocators view the space is something a lot of online lenders and fintech companies want to grasp; the panel at LendIt USA 2017 with asset allocators discussed their thoughts on fintech generally and the alternative yield market; traditional fixed income has become less attractive and so more investors are looking at where they can get greater yield for their investment; there is a thought that normalization of interest rate policy globally will ultimately resolve itself in an unpleasant way; alternative yield is a new asset class so selling to the big institutions has been a challenge; it really comes down to finding the right group within the institution and selling it as the right type of asset; knowing your market appetite is also key, such as in Europe where their are negative yields and public markets have been overbought by central banks; vigilance of recent lessons learned and beginning to fully understand this new asset class are two key takeaways as asset allocators begin taking a closer look toward this market.
