This is the end of a 2-part series and a powerful interview with Army combat vet, turned software developer Lukas Simianer, Founder, VetCLaims.ai. After teaching himself computer coding, he went from flat broke to creating software that is revolutionizing the VA claims process. We begin with his rise to tech entrepreneur as the founder of Clusiv- an e-learning platform built to assist the blind. Simianer shares the battle he faced when state and federal programs chose inefficient status quo over his innovative software. He also shares how initial defeat led to an unusual offer from the CIA. And how psychedelics played a role in inspiring this groundbreaking software. We also hear a troubling description of the VA's C&P (Compensation and Pension) medical exam, and the overwhelming burden of proof put on veterans seeking benefits. Simianer reveals how the code he developed allows VetClaims to instantly research millions of documents, making claims impossible to deny. We close with the shocking battle he now faces with Congress (mainly former military officers now politicians) who submitted bills that would crush VetClaims' ability to help our vets. This episode is the first of a 2-part series where we hear a powerful interview with Army combat vet, Purple Heart recipient turned software developer Lukas Simianer- who fights the VA for vets, and wins.Wounded in Afghanistan at the age of 19, Lukas left the military with only a few hundred bucks in his pocket and started the difficult transition from enlisted soldier to civilian life.He struggled with his own mental health, isolation, lack of any meaningful DoD support and eventually endured being so poor that he lived in a rat infested trailer. But rather than accepting a tragic defeat, he made a bold commitment to change his life and taught himself computer programming.Lukas shares his dramatic story, exposes how the DoD still fails to properly support enlisted veterans after their service and how he became a pioneering tech entrepreneur. We conclude this episode with the story behind his first success as a software developer, creating Clusiv- the world's first online learning platform built for people who are blind. But that was just one step toward founding a revolutionary company that unleashes the power of AI to help his veteran brothers and sisters. Many of whom are currently battling the VA to get the support and benefits they rightfully earned. If you are struggling to get your VA benefits or correct disability rating, check out:https://vetclaims.ai/ For more on Lukas Simianer, VetClaims Founder and 82nd Airborne veteran: https://vetclaims.ai/founder-story/ Contact Phil Briggs, Host, CBS Eye on Veterans phil@connectingvets.com Follow on X:@philbriggsVet@EyeonVeterans@connectingvetsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Luke's story of how he created Clusiv literally brought me to tears. You will want to hear it. When it comes to inclusion, it is all about education. Surrounding yourself around others that are not like yourself is going to push you to learn more about others. This education then leads to the ability to be more inclusive and helping to be more accessible to other groups. On this show, we had the chance to talk with two amazing gentlemen, both who started their lives out with vision and are now legally blind. The things that these gentlemen are doing to “change the perception of blindness” for others is instrumental! In this discussion, they talk about the fears that set in when it comes to inclusion and accessibility. There is fear from one side when it comes to asking. Asking if a blind individual needs help. Asking how you can support them. There is fear from the blind community when it comes to applying for jobs, getting support, etc. We all have fears when it comes to taking steps to change AND change is necessary. Asking the questions is something the simplest place to start. This episode is a vital episode to listen to if you are wanting to support different communities in being more inclusive and accessible and you don't know where to start. This podcast gives encouragement to just start. It can start with simply asking questions. Ask how to help, how to change, how to improve… and then let's do it! Did you know? 7 out of 10 working age people in Arizona who are blind or visually impaired are not working Estimated to be about 20K 45% of hiring managers believe there are no jobs within their organization that a person who is blind could do Changing the perception of blindness is the biggest barrier to employment and inclusion So, ask the questions to start to make the change. We are in this together and can make the changes to help others in the blind community. We can help this community and others to feel included and have the tools to allow them the access to resources and jobs. Blake Steinecke grew up with perfect vision and at the age of 16 a condition called LHON caused him to go through severe central vision loss and become legally blind. This created many new challenges of relearning how to do school, navigating college, employment and more. Blake has a degree in marketing from Cal State San Marcos and has worked in software sales, marketing in the mountain bike industry, accessibility testing and training, and now leads marketing for Clusiv as the Growth Manager. Through Blake's work, he is able to connect his educational and professional background, lived experience navigating the challenges of education and employment being blind, and his passion to serve the blind community through the work he does with Clusiv. Outside of work Blake plays blind hockey for the US Blind Hockey Team, enjoys spending time with his wife, Amanda, and making videos, some of which you can find on his YouTube channel Adapting Sight. It is not something you throw in job descriptions to draw people to applying for jobs within a company. According to Marcus Buckingham and Ashely Goodall in their book Nine Lies About Work, “Culture is the tenants of how we behave. It's like a family creed. This is how we operate and treat each other in the family.” As a growing company: There are many resources out there for company culture but they are scattered and difficult to find. Culture is not a one size fits all, so it is important for companies to find the resources that are the right fit for growing their own company culture. We have worked to build a hub that brings all of the resources together in one place and one community. The Culture Crush Business is the one stop shop for everything related to growing company culture. On this podcast: We focus on everything surrounding businesses with good company culture. We will talk with company leaders to learn about real-life experiences, tips, and best practices for creating a healthy work environment where employees are finding joy and satisfaction in their work while also striving and growing within the company. We also find the companies that offer resources to help improve company culture and showcase them on the show to share their tips and tricks for growing culture. About the Host Kindra Maples is spartan racer, past animal trainer, previous magician's assistant, and has a weakness for Oreo cookie shakes. Her journey working with people actually started working with animals as a teenager (don't worry we won't go that far back for her bio). She worked for over 15 years in the zoo industry working with animals and the public. Her passion of working with animals shifted into working with people in education, operations and leadership roles. From there her passion of leadership and helping people develop has continued to grow. Then came the opportunity for leading the Culture Crush Business Podcast and she jumped on it. Leadership, growth, and strong company cultures are all areas that Kindra is interested in diving into further.

Nathan's Bio: He served in the Army for 19 years and is still currently on active duty. With a notable military career, he has experienced 5 Army combat deployments. One of his significant roles was leading POW/MIA Recovery Missions during deployments to various locations, including Laos, Vietnam, France, Germany, Belgium, and Guadalcanal. During a break in service, he took on a civilian contractor role, conducting security operations in the Middle East. In his free time, he pursued a music career, albeit one he considered "crappy." Nevertheless, he had the extraordinary opportunity to share the stage with renowned musicians and open for impressive performers at Sturgis. Additionally, he ventured into entrepreneurship and successfully started his own business. Despite his diverse experiences, his passion and dedication lie in supporting his fellow brothers and sisters in arms who have endured the challenges of combat. He is heavily invested in making a positive impact on their lives and well-being. This week's Urban Valor episode features Army veteran Luke Simianer. Luke was born in Nebraska, then moved to Virginia, and grew up in Section 8 housing. The 9/11 attacks inspired him to enlist in the Army. Luke was only 17 when he went through Army Airborne school. He did a combat deployment to Afghanistan, where he had quite the experience with snipers, hard drives, and donkeys, to say the least. Luke was reprimanded by his command after making an anonymous video about being hazed. After working several blue-collar jobs upon transitioning, Luke founded “Clusiv,” the world's first e-learning platform for the blind.

Dan has teamed up with an experienced skatepark design company, New Line. Using New Line's design expertise and Dan's knowledge of adaptive skating to create the safest and most accessible skate park ever!Using adaptive methods, such as increasing the size of obstacles, adding contrast to obstacles, tactile ground, auditory cues for echolocation, 3-D models, and a spacious layout. Once the facility is built Dan plans to host monthly skate workshops and skateboard lessons for local youth/adults who are blind and VI, annual adaptive contests to help push for skateboarding the Paralympics, as well as use park adaptations to influence future public skateparks. Anthony & Dan are back for Episode 42. Lot's of great things this episode including EONE timepiece giveaway, movies and TV shows, song written for Dan, Mark Norman, connecting to fans, as a fan/YouTube, trying an open mic, blind comedy, reflecting on being yourself, googling blind comedians and skateboarders, public speaking, accidentally falling asleep during the day, Anthony's lemonade stand operation, Nyquil chicken and other tin tok challenges, being treated differently blind, Anthony's upcoming Judo Competition and more!~Tell time through sight or touch. This is the Eone Bradley, an inclusively designed timepiece that has been worn and enjoyed by people who are blind and sighted, all over the world, for more than a decade. Good design shouldn't be exclusive to those with vision, good design challenges convention, create conversations, and inspires stories.Eone is making the timepiece more accessible through its newly launched Relay exchange program. Watches traded in through the program are refurbished, then sold through the Relay marketplace for 100 USD. That's at least 60% less than the price of a new watch. You could also receive a story from the timepiece's previous owner about the watch's journey so far!So spark conversations today, head over to eone-time.com/relay or use the code FOURBADEYES to save 15% off a new timepiece.###A note from our sponsor Clusiv.io Want to learn the tech skills needed to earn a competitive salary or a remote job? Dan also holds a Master's degree in Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT), which helps to teach adaptive life skills to those dealing with vision loss. Keep Pushing is a non-profit that combines Dan's two passions by introducing the blind/visually impaired (VI) community to the inclusive culture of skateboarding. Through his own journey with vision loss, Dan has found the lack of accessibility in current skateparks. The goal of his foundation is to build the first fully adaptive skatepark and to host skateboard workshops for the blind and VI using what he has learned on the skateboard and through his VRT training. Dan has teamed up with an experienced skatepark design company, New Line. Using New Line's design expertise and Dan's knowledge of adaptive skating to create the safest and most accessible skate park ever! Using adaptive methods, such as increasing the size of obstacles, adding contrast to obstacles, tactile ground, auditory cues for echolocation, 3-D models, and a spacious layout. Once the facility is built Dan plans to host monthly skate workshops and skateboard lessons for local youth/adults who are blind and VI, annual adaptive contests to help push for skateboarding the Paralympics, as well as use park adaptations to influence future public skateparks. While I am far from being a luddite, I also wouldn't claim to be the most savvy guy when it comes to technology. I mean, you're talking to someone who was stoked to beat his son to the punch on buying a iPad Pencil cap holder. And while my time in the world of business has essentially forced me to keep up with at least the big changes in tech, I can't say I've spent a lot of energy thinking about how much time has gone in to adapting to new systems. Of course, the pandemic forced all of us to pivot harder into a digital future. But just like most great leaps forward, there are often too many either forgotten or intentionally left behind. Thankfully, there are folks like my guest today, Lukas Simianer, who are working to bridge the digital-gaps.In 2020, Lukas founded Clusiv, the world's first e-learning platform built for and by the blind and visually impaired. Founded with the mission of reducing the net amount of suffering in the world, Clusiv has established itself as the leader in accessible upskilling and vocational training. And Lukas's path to becoming a leader in this has been anything but ordinary. At the age of 17, he became one of the youngest service members to be awarded his jump-wings, earning a coveted assignment to the historic 82nd Airborne. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded in Afghanistan at the age of 19. Lukas would eventually discharge from the service and so began the hunt for what he terms “a calling”We discuss that journey, the leadership lessons - both good and bad - he learned during his time in the service, and why brokennesses isn't just inevitable, it's a strength. Enjoy the show!
