Starvation isn't only a deficit of calories, it's also a deficit of nutrients. Children especially suffer when the food they do get doesn't meet all their nutritional needs. Felix Brooks-church has some big ideas to end the “hidden hunger” of micronutrient deficiency, and in 2013, he and David Dodson co-founded the non-profit organization Sanku to help close the gap. One of Felix's biggest ideas is the dosifier. In many places in Africa, a starchy flour is the staple food people consume. A dosifier adds critical nutrients to the flour, providing key vitamins and minerals the flour alone lacks. Coupled with smart technology from Vodafone, Sanku is able to reach millions, and the organization is on track to assist more than 30 million people in getting the nutrients they need by 2026. We hope you'll enjoy this encouraging conversation. After you've listened, please consider making a donation to Sanku either via thelifeyoucansave.org or directly at projecthealthychildren.org. Tune in for a transformative journey into the core principles of business success with a true expert in the field. "The act of doing ordinary things extraordinarily well is uncommon." - Navy SEALs Ethos Key Takeaways: Why We Learn From Failure: Understanding the essence of learning from failure lies in our tendency to dissect setbacks more meticulously than successes. Achievements often lead us to overlook the comprehensive details, whereas stumbling compels us to delve deep into the intricacies of what went awry. It is through the process of picking apart our missteps or wins that we can extract valuable insights and foster genuine growth. Skills vs. Intuition: Navigating the intricacies of a successful business isn't always intuitive; instead, it heavily relies on a foundation of skills. This perspective is highlighted in "The Manager's Handbook," where the identification of five universal skill areas underscores the critical role of aptitude in effective management. Recognizing and honing these skills becomes paramount for anyone seeking success in the dynamic world of business. Mental Health in the Workplace: Destigmatizing mental illness in the workplace is vital for leaders. Brilliance often coexists with mental health challenges, like bipolar disorder. Leaders must proactively equip themselves with tools to manage these issues, acknowledging their inevitability in the workplace. Time Management: Mastering the use of your time is not just a skill; it's a role of custodianship over one of our most precious resources. Recognizing the importance of being a custodian of time involves a strategic approach to prioritizing tasks, setting goals, and optimizing efficiency. By understanding the value of time, individuals can achieve greater productivity, reduce stress, and ultimately unlock their full potential in both personal and professional realms. TAKEAWAYS Managers must move away from hiring based on gut feelings and move toward hiring based on outcomes. In the first one hundred days, the connective tissue is built between the employee and the company, so proper leadership during this initial time is critical to retention. Instant performance management with radical candor is essential in developing your people and building trust. The exit interview is a secret weapon for greater understanding and development of the manager's strengths and weaknesses, and it must be conducted effectively by someone who is not the direct report. Often, we can confuse busyness with progress — we must ask ourselves whether we're moving the company forward or just “being busy.” Sign up for the annual What People Want from Work Survey by Aug 31: https://xeniumhr.com/what-people-want-from-work/ A QUICK GLIMPSE INTO OUR PODCAST

This week’s episode is about a young pregnant Ohio woman named Brittany Stykes. She had a 14 month old daughter named Aubree and was pregnant with her second child. On the evening of August 28, 2013, Brittany and Aubree were on their way to visit Brittany’s parents. It was her father David Dodson’s birthday. Brittany was driving her yellow Jeep on U.S. 68 in Brown County, Ohio. Aubree was strapped in her car seat. Unfortunately, Brittany never made it to her father’s birthday party. Someone pulled up on her and shot her and her unborn baby to death. The killer shot baby Aubree in the head. Miraculously, she survived and has made a full recovery. Mary and David Dodds struggle with the loss of their daughter. Brittany used to call her dad daily to check up on him. He said she was a fixture at the family home. Father and son spoke about everything and shared a close bond. Today, the Dodson family often visits a roadside memorial marking the site where a callous killer executed Brittany. David told me that Brittany was an amazing daughter. She had never been in any trouble with the law. She also didn’t have any drug or alcohol problems. David said she got along well with everyone. No one has ever determined a motive. If you know anything about this case, there is a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in Brittany’s murder. If you have information about this case, please call 937-378-4435 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-888-352-3040. What is your mental model of an ideal worker? Is your mindset creating blind spots about talent development? In this week's episode of the CitySCOPE podcast, our co-hosts Norbert Cichon and Brice Eidson speak with leaders of two workforce intermediaries that have developed creative strategies for regional workforce development. David Dodson, past President of MDC Inc., (and Yale SOM graduate!) highlights the importance of connecting young people to work and learning opportunities early in their education-to-career trajectory, both for the young people and for their employers. His experience with the Made in Durham effort in Durham, North Carolina illustrates both the opportunities and the challenges in this work, even in an economically strong region, home to innovative, globally competitive companies. Jerry Rubin of Jewish Vocational Services in Boston, shares lessons from his decades of work developing smart and responsive initiatives building bridges to career opportunities in the healthcare sector. At a time when the American economy is producing both highly paid jobs for those with higher levels of education and large numbers of low wage jobs, Jerry shares what he's learned about how to direct supply side training toward demand-side needs and the importance of pairing those initiatives with strategic efforts to address job quality at the sector level. Join us for a great conversation! Photo credit: Made in Durham

"So we started these intervention programs, and eventually we expanded into East Africa, we were in seven countries, reached about 45 million people with permanent sustainable programs to fortify food in parts of the country. Just like we have food fortified here - when you go buy a loaf of bread, it's got iron and so forth in it. We wanted to bring those same opportunities to people in East Africa and Central America." - David Dodson
The Sustainable Development Goals include the concept of universality to recognize that the challenges of human development are not confined to low-income countries. In this episode, we take a deeper look at the daunting human development challenges in the United States. What are the parallels and shared lessons between domestic and global development challenges and solutions, particularly with respect to addressing poverty and inequality? To end this season's look at the darker side of development, Patrick Fine, Chief Executive Officer of FHI 360, sits down with David Dodson, President of MDC, a nonprofit working on issues of poverty and power in the U.S. South. They discuss the structural issues that lead to inequality, the importance of place-based institutions to combat poverty and the ebb and flow of progress within development. Brian S. Carr is a composer for film and television based in Los Angeles. He first found his way into music through a piano given to him by a great aunt when he was 2 years old and later went to study classical music at Pepperdine University and Arizona State University. David Dodson leads a panel discussion of three active search fund investors in exploring recent trends in the search fund community; looking at how investment decisions are made, and what investors look for in a search fund entrepreneur. (October 7, 2010)
My guest on this episode is David Dodson. David started the second ever search fund after being a Stanford case writer, purchasing Smith Alarm Systems in 1989. Over his career, David has been the CEO or executive chairman of five companies, has and continues to invest in search funds today through his firm Futaleufu Partners, and he is a professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business, teaching classes about search and the management of small companies. My conversation with David starts with his time as a case writer before launching his search fund. We talk about peaks and valleys in his search career, including some very hard conversations. We dive deep into the topic of transitioning from a contributor to a leader of a small firm and important leadership skills. We also talk about how the search fund world has evolved over time and where it might continue to change in the future. Finally, we talk about the relationships searchers have with their investors and how to foster better ones. I've been really excited to have David on the podcast for quite a while, and I hope you enjoy our wide-ranging conversation.Listen weekly and follow the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Breaker, and TuneIn.Links:David on LinkedInFutaleufu PartnersTopics:(5:26) - David's background and career(9:21) - What sticks out to you the most when thinking back on getting someone to write you a check?(12:11) - Once you had the capital, what did you do to search for companies?(13:43) - What were some of the more stressful calls you had with owner/operators?(15:03) - David's experience acquiring & running Smith Alarm Systems(19:06) - How did you approach your first 18 months as the new owner?(23:50) - The 5 skills of Leadership(29:11) - What are some examples of early prioritization as a leader?(31:42) - How do you advise making the transition from being a contributor to one organization to being a leader of your own organization?(34:46) - What are some common struggles folks have when they become a manager of managers?(38:48) - What have been some “near-death experiences” in your career?(45:16) - Are there any exercises you try to do to put your mind at a pause when you're making a critical decision?(47:41) - What are some ways you've seen the Search Fund world change throughout your career?(51:11) - Are there too many searchers?(53:00) - What advice do you have for searchers to build relationships with their investor base?(56:26) - What college course would you teach if it could be on anything?
