Nicht vergessen: Nature Made it, but Komplett Verpasst formed it. You're probably not old enough to remember, but a commercial in the 70s reminds me of this episode. In the commercial, a woman who represented Earth informed the viewer, "'It's not nice to fool Mother Nature."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDkiq5jD5HcI don't know if this ad made an impression on me, but my adult self agrees with it.I don't think we consult Mother Nature often enough. It might be my Evolutionary Ecology background showing, but I tend to think of things in terms of evolutionary history. In many ways, I use Nature as a reference in most of my life.I have done several episodes honoring the beauty of evolution.Episode 44, 'Unnatural Selection' suggests that humans have altered the typical course of evolution using things like technology and machines.https://chrisburcher.com/2021/03/26/kew-episode-44-unnatural-selection/In my 100th episode, 'The Evolution Paradox' I discuss how strange it seems that humans resist change despite being entirely driven by adaptation to a changing environment. Quite literally, the only thing we can depend on is that things change.https://chrisburcher.com/2022/06/03/life-is-supposed-to-change-its-up-to-you-kew-episode-100-the-evolution-paradox/Truly, most of my thinking assumes that the evolutionary model and history tells us a lot about success.Fitness, according to Darwin, is essentially biological success. The things that persist on Earth are 'fit' for the environment. Fitness is good. Extinction is bad. Here I am going a step further to suggest that we treat Mother Nature as our ally. Our therapist. Our counselor. Why would we not consult this wisdom when making decisions about our future? This consultation is toward what I am calling 'Natural Law', though this term has been used before and isn't quite suitable here.I'm simply suggesting that we look to history to think about the future. Kind of like how meteorology and predicting weather is more 'hindcasting', or looking to the past, than it is 'forecasting'. Instead, humans often assume we know better than Mother Nature because we are so evolved and intelligent. We create technology that helps our bodies live longer while our minds rot. We burn fossil fuels that help us fly around the planet while we destroy the systems the planet relies on for life. We're good, but we're not that smart. This sort of unnatural selection is dangerously arrogant and, arguably, is leading to our demise. The most obvious example of this erroneous and arrogant thinking is Capitalism, and I discuss this in detail in Episode 37, 'The Currency of Life'. https://chrisburcher.com/2021/01/08/kew-episode-37-currency-of-life/Humans think we can do better than Mother Nature. And maybe we can, but we certainly shouldn't implement these strategies without consulting her first. Our ancestors knew this. We just forgot. If you are enjoying this content, please tell your friends.
A major theory of consciousness is being put to the test with brain scans. Integrated information theory proposes a value called "phi" to represent consciousness and in a new experiment, it seems to work. Does the discovery bring us any closer to solving the elusive “hard problem” of neuroscience? Graphene has been hailed as a super material since its synthesis in 2004. But, unbeknownst to us, nature has long-been producing graphene, right under our noses. Understanding natural graphene production could revolutionise the way we create this remarkable material.A roarsome discovery of two previously unknown sabre-toothed cat species in South Africa provides insights into their cheetah-like and leopard-like lifestyles. The finding challenges our long-held beliefs about these ancient felines. Could chargrilled mushrooms be the key to fireproofing our homes? A team in Melbourne, Australia, unveiled a fire-resistant material created from the mycelium of edible mushrooms this week. With remarkable flame resistance and environmentally-friendly properties, the approach looks promising. Finally, some intriguing space discoveries, including the Janus star, with its unique hydrogen-helium split surface, a giant exoplanet called PDS 70b, which reveals a potential sibling forming in its orbit, marking the first time two planets have been found to share an orbit, and the LEGO robot creating DNA machines.Hosts Timothy Revell and Christie Taylor discuss all of this with guests Clare Wilkins, Corryn Wetzel and Alex Wilkins. Have you ever thought about how the word “should” is running your life? Like, I should work harder. I should be thinner. I should go workout. I should be more motivated. I should . . . fill in the blank. Tricia Huffman, aka Your Joyologist and author of F the Shoulds. Do the Wants: Get Clear On Who You Are, What You Want, and Why You Want It, believes that this one word holds us back, steals our joy, and even makes us question our self-worth! After becoming more aware of how the “shoulds” were not only part of her vocabulary, but also a part of her thoughts and beliefs, Tricia completely eliminated the word from her life. When she shifted the “shoulds” into “wants”, Tricia was able to make decisions that better reflect who she is and wants to be. Now, she's on a mission to empower you to claim your joy by living life the way you want to live, rather than conforming to some model you think you “should” be following. In this episode, you'll learn: How to become aware of the way “should” impacts your life The sneaky ways the “shoulds” show up in your food story Strategies for releasing guilt and shame A unique approach to respond to negative self talk A single question to reframe the “shoulds” How to claim joy every day After listening, you'll feel empowered to take action right away by simply paying attention to this one word! We are constantly being bombarded with messages about food, fashion, and beauty that make us feel “not enough” – not healthy enough, thin enough, pretty enough, youthful enough, put-together enough. While it is impossible to avoid all the noise, we can control how we respond to it. Lauren Dimet Waters, co-founder of the blog Fountain of 30 and host of the podcast Beauty is a Bitch, has been through many chapters with food, fashion, and beauty. Her story is a push and pull between losing weight to meet someone else's beauty standard and making peace with food and her body. When Lauren finally learned how to feel her best and find her personal style without getting sucked into trends and noise, she made it her mission to inspire thousands of others to do the same. Lauren shares how you can still care about food, fashion, and beauty but do so in a way where kindness and compassion are part of the equation. In this episode, you'll learn: How to tap into your current food story Practical solutions to release stress around food Mindset shifts to change your inner narrative The way parents can shape your relationship with food – for better or worse Strategies for becoming a more sustainable shopper Tips to quiet all the noise that make us feel not “good enough” After listening, you'll feel inspired to write the next chapter of your food, fashion, and beauty story! Salt is a critical nutrient that human beings need in order to survive and thrive because it supports life and optimum body function. The problem is that we've been told for decades that "salt is bad" through false propaganda and media campaigns which have discarded the healing and restorative powers of nature-made salt that long-lived cultures have embraced for centuries. The truth is that NOT having salt can actually make you sick. Here, we discuss the main benefits of eating enough salt and the four key ways you can make salt a staple of your everyday self care routine. For more information and all of your self-care needs, visit us at www.tolmanselfcare.com
In this episode Hannah and I get together to dig deep into a topic neither of us know much about – parenting children who identify as transgender. We feel that this is an incredibly important subject, and in order to gain a more authentic perspective, I interview my friend and fellow mother, Amber Brio. Amber speaks openly about her parenting journey with her son as he transitioned, and how she learned to be the parent he needed her to be. What can parents do if their child comes to them and is upset about, or unsure of, their gender identity? At what point is it good to get medical and psychological professionals involved? How can you support your child when you don't understand what they are going through, and is that understanding even necessary? How do you come to terms with your child choosing to be their authentic selves, if it is different from the person you thought you brought into the world? We talk about all these things and MORE in this episode of ATKAIB, we hope you enjoy it! A final note from Amber: As a parent, it is vital to let your child set the tone for your level of advocacy and how vocal you are. If they are at all uncomfortable with you speaking openly about these issues, don't. Being a loud, proud parent can feel like outing your child on repeat. It's not about you, don't press them about it. Be an advocate in the ways you vote, with the tone you set when these conversations come up, and by how well you show up for your child. Love wins.

Jenna Ryan, founder of Uqora, explains how her line of health products is jumpstarting a neglected area of women's health while becoming a gold-standard business startup at the same time. Contracted nearly as commonly as the common cold, women are particularly prone to UTIs. A chronic sufferer herself, Jenna was inspired (along with her now-husband) to found Uqora out of a personal desire to foster better options than were available. As many as one in seven hospitalizations and health care visits are devoted to urinary tract health, so clearly the market for at-home test kits and preventative measures is there! Jenna shares the personal experience that played a role in her decision to start Uqora in 2017 as well as exciting news about the company's recent acquisition by Pharmavite, the parent of Nature Made, a major drug store vitamin and supplement brand. In addition to products that promote urinary tract health, Uqora is also conducting research on new, non-antibiotic UTI treatments and providing UTI education and research updates. Maintaining optimal urinary tract health isn't just smart medically; it's also key to avoiding the anxiety and emotional baggage that comes with UTIs. It's no surprise that Uqora's website boasts more than 11,000 positive reviews from women who have found relief. Enjoy hearing about the many ways in which Jenna and her team are enjoying a win-win, both as an innovator and advocate for women and as a tremendous entrepreneurial success story in the women's health care space. Part 1: N-acetyl cysteine In the first half of today’s episode, Caitlin and Sophia discuss the potential shortage of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a supplement you may be taking to improve cervical mucus, egg quality, and blood sugar control. So, first things first. What is happening with NAC? Well, the FDA recently submitted paperwork to re-classify NAC as a drug rather than a supplement, prompting some sellers to pull the product from their shelves. Why is this happening? NAC is being studied as a treatment for COVID-19 and, if successful, pharmaceutical companies are going to want to patent the drug. Bottom line, NAC is getting harder to find. Please note: NAC has not been found to be harmful or contaminated, so if you are currently taking it, it is safe to continue to do so. Ok, so why does this matter? NAC is a great supplement for improving fertility because it addresses 3 big players in infertility: cervical mucus, egg quality, and blood sugar balance. Are there other supplements that can help? Absolutely. But what makes NAC so great is that it checks multiple boxes (so, less pills!) with minimal side effects. Alternatives to NAC, including liposomal glutathione (for cervical mucus and egg quality) and myo-inositol or berberine ( for blood sugar balance) are discussed. As always, you can’t out-supplement a poor diet, so make sure you are nourishing your body and staying hydrated! And please check in with your naturopath, dietitian, or physician before starting a new supplement routine. Part 2: What to Look for in a Prenatal Multivitamin In the second half of the episode, Caitlin and Sophia review what to look out for when choosing a prenatal vitamin and discuss some of their favorite brands, and some of their not-so-favorite ones. Of course, food first is always the preference, but with our busy lives and modern farming practices, we may still be lacking in some important nutrients, particularly when our needs are increased during pregnancy. So what things do you want to check for when you’re picking out a prenatal? First, check the bottle or website to make sure the manufacturer uses 3rd party testing. This ensures an outside party is checking the product for contaminants, purity, and potency. Next, it's preferable not to have both calcium and iron in the same supplement. These minerals compete for absorption, so you probably won’t be getting enough of either one. Making sure vitamins are in their active form and that there are meaningful amounts of each nutrient is so important and many OTC brands that you’d find at the drugstore just aren’t up to snuff here. Specific nutrients to pay attention to: B vitamins, choline, vitamins A, D, and K, magnesium, and selenium. And ideally, your omega-3s will be coming from a separate fish oil supplement to ensure you’re getting a meaningful amount. So what brands do Caitlin and Sophia recommend? At the top of the list is Full Circle Prenatal, developed by fellow dietitian Ayla Barmmer. Another close second is the Optimal Prenatal by Seeking Health, which is available in pill, chewable, and protein powder forms. Thorne Basic Prenatal and Smarty Pants Prenatal are also acceptable options in certain circumstances, but be aware that they may be lacking in some nutrients. Some popular brands you may be better off steering clear of include Ritual, Nature Made, Honest, and Garden of Life. Bottom line: eat real food and take a quality prenatal.
Vitamin D is a nutrient that your body produces when you are exposed to sunlight. It is also found in food, including fish and eggs. You might be wondering if you need Vitamin D in your diet because of the COVD (Climate Change). There have been many cases where people were deficient due to lack of exposure to the sun. In this blog post we will talk about what Vitamin D does for your body, how much do you need, and if it's possible to take too much?Weigh-InI am down a smidge to 234.5. I've removed cereal from my house (as I can't eat "just one bowl") and I'm slowly eating less meat after looking into a more plant-based lifestyle. What is All This Talk About Vitamin D?Vitamin D DeficiencyMuch of this information is from this website In the United States, 41.6% of the total population is deficient. The symptoms of a Vitamin D deficiency are not always as easy to identify, especially if you're out in the sun. Many people live healthy lives without experiencing problems from this condition, but for some, it could mean loss of joint function or issues with muscle growth and recovery time. The most well-known symptom of vitamin D deficiency is rickets, a bone disease common in children in developing countries. Rickets has been mostly eliminated from Western countries because of the fortification of some foods with vitamin D.Deficiency is also linked to osteoporosis, reduced mineral density, and increased risk of falls and fractures in older adults. What's more, studies indicate that people with low vitamin D levels have a much greater risk of heart disease, diabetes (types 1 and 2), cancer, dementia, and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis. Finally, vitamin D deficiency is linked to a reduced life expectancy. Two Types of Vitamin DTwo main dietary forms existVitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Found in some animal foods, like fatty fish and egg yolks.Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Found in some plants, mushrooms, and yeasts.Of the two, D3 (cholecalciferol) seems to be almost twice as effective at increasing blood levels of vitamin D as D2.Benefits of Vitamin DReduced risk of osteoporosis, falls, and fractures.Better strength. Vitamin D can increase physical strength in both upper and lower limbs.Cancer prevention. Vitamin D may help prevent cancer. One study noted that 1,100 IU per day — alongside calcium — reduced cancer risk by 60%Depression management. Studies show that vitamin D may ease symptoms in people with clinical depression.Reduced risk of type 1 diabetes.Improved mortality. Some studies suggest that vitamin D reduces people's risk of dying during the study periods, indicating that it may help you live longerHowever, many of these results are preliminary. According to a recent review, more evidence is necessary to confirm many of these benefitsHow Much Should I take? This seems to be up to debate.400 IU (10 mcg): infants, 0–12 months600 IU (15 mcg): children and adults, 1–70 years old800 IU (20 mcg): older adults and pregnant or breastfeeding womenAlthough adequacy is measured at 20 ng/ml, many health experts believe that people should aim for blood levels higher than 30 ng/ml for optimal health and disease preventionAccording to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, the safe upper limit is 4,000 IU. This is interesting as many manufacturers are selling pills there the dose is 5000 IU.It May Need Other Nutrients to WorkSome researchers claim that fat-soluble vitamins work together and that it's crucial to optimize your vitamin A and K intake while supplementing with vitamin D3.This is especially important for vitamin K2, another fat-soluble vitamin that most people don't get enough of.Magnesium — another important mineral often lacking in the modern diet — may also be important for vitamin D function. What Happens if You Take Too Much?It is a myth that it is easy to overdose on vitamin D.Vitamin D toxicity is very rare and only happens if you take very high doses for extended periods. The main symptoms of toxicity include confusion, lack of concentration, drowsiness, depression, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, and high blood pressureWhere to Buy Vitamin D?In looking for sources, I found Amazon Elements which is Amazon now selling supplements. A bottle of Vitam D3 is 10.99 for 180 capsules if 5000IU vs Nature Made at 14.72 for the same bottle. Please remember, I'm not a doctor or a trainer. Please consult your logical doctor before taking supplements.

The opportunity was to provide science-based dietary supplement information on the products that were part of the Nature Made brand. The reach of the family physician is broad with, nearly 1 in 4 doctor visits in the United States being made to a family physician. Four years ago, Pharmavite became a founding partner of a new AAFP education initiative to bring the Nature Made’s science based messages to family physicians. Overall support from the AAFP leadership and response from the AAFP membership to the dietary supplement education programs has been overwhelmingly positive. On September 26, 2013, Doug MacLean, Pharmavite’s CEO, accepted the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation’s Outstanding Service Award on behalf of Pharmavite at the AAFP Foundation Dinner. It is the Academy’s highest recognition for vendors, suppliers and companies that support the medical profession or their employees. “The depth of this honor is that the nominations are made by the AAFP state chapters, members and staff to the AAFP Board of Directors,” said Doug MacLean. “It speaks to the strength of the relationship between our two organizations and our common vision of optimizing health and wellness for individuals, our communities and people around the world.” The 11th year will break new ground with Pharmavite’s creation of an initiative called Nature Made Cares About Family Medicine. It is designed to raise funds to support Family Medicine Cares, the AAFP Foundation’s humanitarian program to establish new free medical clinics. The initiative encourages physician engagement with and education about dietary supplements with patients. “The Nature Made Cares About Family Medicine program adds a new dimension to Pharmavite’s support of the Foundation’s work,” said Craig Doane, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at the AAFP. “We know our members place a high value on the humanitarian efforts of the organization, and they consistently request and need patient education materials for their day-to-day practice. The innovative design of this new program allows both goals to be achieved.” Nature Made Cares About Family Medicine is a part of Pharmavite’s strategic partnership with the AAFP. The partnership allows Nature Made to reach AAFP’s physician members with Nature Made brand information and dietary supplement-focused educational materials.

First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Eric asks: Yesterday I completed my first 130 mile weekend with 80 of those moles on Sunday. I did the best I could regarding nutrition in the saddle but I'm still super hungry today. What would be your replenishment plan after an effort like that. Garmin said I burnt up around 4500 calories. I'm 174 6'1 & male if that helps at all. Emily asks: I am a runner, and I used to be a smoker. I recently quit, but I am wondering if there are any supplements or health tricks that might help my lungs heal faster and to keep me motivated from going back to the dreaded cigarettes? I have run a marathon while smoking, and I can't wait to run one smoke free! Melanie asks: Not to keep on the whole fasted morning exercise thing that you've talked about, but I'm wondering your opinion on a very small woman with no muscle to lose on what point should I actually be concerned of "eating" muscle. I'm 5'2 and 105 and approx. 17% body fat. I want to get to 13 - 14% body fat but don't need to lose much weight or any muscle. Should I even be doing fasted exercise? Is it okay to do fasted 45 minute strength training? Susan asks: Please Help! How can I tell if I'm truly in menopause or experiencing exercise induce amenorrhea. I lost my cycle at age 42 while doing heavy volume triathlon training while following a low carb vegetarian diet (stupid, I know). I got very lean. Dr. figured it was related to low body fat. Now almost 4 years later, it has not returned - I cont. to train heavily but BOOM! put on almost 10# even though I made no changes to my regimen. Now doc says it's menopause. My FSH wa 34.8 (menopausal) but my LH was low (7.2). I've tried to research but, from what I can tell, the levels are usually either both high or both low. Do my results mean anything? Todd asks: I switched gyms and have gone from chlorine pool to saline pool. I find my times are better and swimming seems a bit easier. Is this because of saline buoyancy? Gerry asks: Hi Ben, my best half marathon time to date is 95 min. However, in a 70.3 race, I've struggled to go faster. My best there is 115 min. What's the most effective way to train to improve that half marathon time during a 70.3 race? I'd like to do it under 100 min without fatigue or cramps. Janet asks: I work out 30 min. every morning six days a week. My workouts are 1 minute hard resistance/ cycling with cadence of 55 or 60 with my heart rate getting up to max 180 beats followed by recovery for 1 minute with cadence of 50 or 60 and heart rate around 150. Workout Is 30 min. Could you give me some ideas for other spinning workouts I could do? Can my body get too accustomed to this? Mike asks: I recently passed a kidney stone. My urologist had me do a 24 hr urine test, which showed high urinary calcium and oxalate. He has recommended I avoid Vitamin D supplementation (I'm currently taking 3000 IU daily), as well as decreasing coffee, cola, chocolate, nuts, spinach and green leafy vegetables. I don't drink cola and only 2 cups of coffee/day, but I really don't want to give up my big salad, handful of nuts, and small piece of dark chocolate. I've researched other "high oxalate" foods and it's a lot of otherwise very healthy foods that I love! What can you suggest for eating healthy while maintaining a "low oxalate" diet. Tony asks: I have recently finished my first 1/2 marathon, and my first Biathlon. My partner and I are signing up for a trail marathon in October. We are both in good shape and are dedicated to being better. I am a professionally diagnosed genetic hypertension person. I take two tablets each morning so that I will not stroke out. They are Procardia and Hyzaar. As I train, how should I approach supplements? What type of drug interactions do I need to be aware of? Melanie asks: Melanie asks: Hi Ben, What do you know about D-ribose? A health and fitness person that I follow sometimes said he just completed his own trial of ribose after being sent a sample and said after one week he felt a big difference in his energy level. Wondering if this is a good option to increase energy and what the drawbacks might be? Carlos calls in and asks: I am just a beginning amateur runner and am wondering if "regular" Multivitamins and Protein will be detrimental to my health. I hear you mention a lot of things about regular multivitamins and other regular supplements, but you never recommend them. Are they actually unhealthy for a beginner like me? By "regular" I mean, the more popular & affordable supplements used by a greater number of people such as products by Nature Made, GNC, and Optimum Nutrition. Are the supplements you recommend specifically for triathletes? My health is no where near a triathlete. Do I still need to take these "special" supplements or am I good taking the regular ones? I heard from another source I trust, that the differences between "special" and "regular" supplements are slim, and unless you are professionally training, the slightly higher benefit from taking special supplements is not really needed. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
