"IT'S FATAL: WHAT IS FILM NOIR?" (PART III) (080) 3/24/2025 Welcome to the third and final installment of our series on Film Noir. As we have previously discussed the technical elements of noir and met the typical character's of noir, we will now take a look at the creative aspects of the genre that help create that special brand of dark, sexy, deadly movies. We'll discuss dialogue, and clever devices like voice overs, flashbacks, and dream sequences that enhance these dark, moody films. We'll also look at the fatalistic themes that reigned supreme throughout the genre.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Film Noir (2017), by Alian Silver & James Ursini; Into the Darkness: The Hidden World of Film Noir 1941-1959 (2016), by Mark A. This title, from director Diane Foster and writer Allison Lobel, is the latest narrative that takes a family theme and perverts it into something absolutely horrific. In this case, a small town is rocked by sudden disappearances and animal attacks, and it's going mostly unknown until a wiry middle-aged woman goes on a quest to find her missing husband. Soon, she discovers that 150 years ago the town was besieged by jackalopes – a mythical creature home to North America that's a dangerous cross between rabbit and deer. Are the jackalopes planning another onslaught to mark the occasion? Watch and find out!

As we've said before, pulling off a horror comedy is one of the most precarious feats a director can attempt. The feat is made all the more difficult when it's done on a micro-budget with limited to no resources. Easter Bloody Easter manages to walk this tight rope with aplomb, while pulling in one of the coolest Black Sabbath horror references since the semi-eponymous Black Sabbath in 1963. Easter Bloody Easter is the new horror film from first time director, Diane Foster.

Diane Foster is the director of Easter Bloody Easter and founder of Wallybird Productions. But before she became a filmmaker, she was an actor, singer and dancer. She trained her entire life in New Jersey, where she grew up in Union in a large family. She started performing at 8 and was Little Miss Union and she did lots of regional theatre. Diane later went to the Paper Mill Playhouse in Milburn, New Jersey every Summer throughout high school. Diane went to conservatory for years with Anne Hathaway and after winning an award, she realized, acting, could be a career. She moved to New York and did lots of off Broadway and a stint on Law and Order: SVU. By 21, she was living in LA and after 2 weeks there, she met Robin Antin who created The Pussy Cat Dolls. Diane became a dancer for the live show, Pussy Cat Dolls Live at The Roxy. Prior to becoming a group and it was a revue with 20 dancers. When she wasn't dancing Diane was auditioning for independent films, her first role she was in a movie called Iowa and a documentary called Dying For Meth, she was 24 years old and Iowa was selected to show at Tribeca. Soon the Orphan Killer franchise began and after the sequel, she moved on to create her own production company called Wallybird Productions in 2018 and so far has 17 projects completed. Easter Bloody Easter was inspired by a play that began in an acting class. So Diane and some other actors (Allison Lobell and Miles Cooper) from the play got together and took the show on the road but then the pandemic put a stop to that. So Diane decided to turn it into a film, Allison wrote the script and she, Diane and Kelly Grant hit the ground running. This was Diane's directorial debut. Easter Bloody Easter is an indie holiday film with physical effects, lots of hilarious killer bunnies and a monster jackelope. It's a slow burn that only gets better as you watch it. Plus if you like music, this one has plenty of it. Rocky Horror and Little Shop of Horror Fans, this one is for you! And Diane and Co. has already started working on the sequel. Ms. Foster does not just do horror, she is socially conscious and Wallybird Productions is about giving people opportunity who are too often overlooked, in front of and behind the camera. It's her contribution to change the landscape of the film industry and you can expect every one of her productions to be diverse. If you like docudramas, keep an eye out for My Home Unknown, in keeping with Wallybird's dedication to change, this film is an eye opening story about a houseless woman struggling with mental illness. Last but not least, Easter Bloody Easter is out and streaming on itunes, apply play and Amazon on March 26, 2024! There will be physical copies that begin releasing on April 2nd and pre-orders are open! And keep an eye out for the soundtrack. “It’s through those experiences that blindside us that we discover what makes us so powerful. It’s through your break downs that you’ll find your breakthroughs.” Diane Foster (17:23 - 17:36) Dana Pharant is a badass business performance coach, and she works with entrepreneurs to help them find and reconnect with who they are at their core. Her personal brand of inner dominatrix pushes people out of their comfort zone, challenges their preconceived notions, and helps them step into a fierce determination to rock their bold, fun-filled lives! Dana helps her clients uncover their bulletproof confidence, and she helps them draw their inner power out from within themselves. Embrace Challenging Periods in Your Life We all wish that we perpetually felt like hot, badass rockstars in total control of our circumstances. But that’s not how life works. No matter who you are, you will hit road bumps. Whether you’re running a highly profitable business or enjoying great success in your personal life, at times, things just aren’t going to go the way you want them to. When that happens, it’s natural for you to experience a little bit of self-doubt, or lose a little hope. You might start thinking that you aren’t really cut out for what you’re trying to achieve, or worse, that you don’t deserve the life that you have imagined for yourself. “I’m not giving anybody anything new. I’m helping people find their inner power where it already exists.” - Dana Pharant (18:38 - 18:46) However, these trying times can be your biggest blessings if you learn how to use them to your advantage. Just like you need to lift weights if you want growth in your muscles, you have to overcome challenges in your business, or in your personal life, if you wish to grow and take things to the next level. Three Tips to Overcome Self-doubt and Discover Your Inner Power Embrace the Moment - Most likely, you’ve been through tough situations in your life which, in hindsight, you’ve realized were blessings in disguise. The real trick is to welcome challenges while you’re in that moment of difficulty. What new skills are you forced to learn, or which new connections do you have to make to overcome this road bump? If you can focus on the benefits instead of the bad stuff, you’ll be able to reveal more of your real inner power. Doubt the Doubt - Self-doubt is a natural part of the process, especially if you’ve experienced something you perceived as a failure in the past. But you should doubt the self-doubt itself. Is it really giving you accurate feedback, or is it merely the monkey-mind gone wild? Are there things that you've done well in the past, or mistakes that you've learned from? This is where a good coach or therapist can be extremely valuable. They can help you uncover blocks in your own mind, and to remove the ceiling for what you will allow for yourself. Ask the Right Questions - The questions you ask yourself play a critical role in the outcomes that you get. Maybe you’re not aware that you’re continually asking yourself why you can’t make more money, or why you can’t maintain a stable relationship. Your subconscious mind doesn’t discriminate, and it gives you the answers you’re looking for. So, it’ll bring you evidence to solidify your current self-limiting beliefs. Instead, ask yourself why you’re so good at inviting positive results. You’ll start finding reasons why you do deserve good things, and consequently, you’ll begin to attract them into your life. “If you know what you should be doing, but something is holding you back, maybe there's a deeper layer within you that needs to heal so you can overcome doubt and  take that leap of faith.” - Dana Pharant (28:03 - 28:14) Remember, when you hit road bumps, it’s a clear sign that it’s time for you to level up. Embrace the challenge and look for the positives. It’s through your break downs that you’ll find your breakthroughs as you reveal your hottest, badass self. I HAVE TODAY with Diane Forster

“Inside of us is an inner child, a little boy or girl. Sometimes we come from that place of the hurt child and make adult decisions.” - Danielle Henderson (10:22 - 10:31)Diane ForsterI Have Today Get out of your way and move towards healing. When a marriage collapses it’s bloody and horrendous. Danielle Henderson, Founder of Kids Soul Speak, and a single mom, knows the pain all too well. She could barely stand the sight of her ex’s picture in her son’s room. As confusing as the divorce was for her, Danielle realized it was even more debilitating for her son. The realization gave birth to an organization that empowers adolescents to use their voice when life gets tough and encourages parents to listen. Keeping open space for challenging conversations about love, divorce, and loss isn’t easy. Most parents usually adopt poor behavior and attitude towards their ex, making it nearly impossible for an adolescent to even think of a parent that still holds a chunk of their heart. If you are struggling through a divorce, I understand. That inner child who believed in the magic of love is wounded. The pain is relentless, urging you to lash out and blinding you of the truth. You aren’t the only one suffering! For you and your child’s sake, you need to heal. The best way to begin is by dropping your ego, adopting a selfless attitude, and working towards a place of forgiveness. “Pull back, let it go, and let it flow. We make ourselves ill and sick, hating and being angry, wanting to harm and do bad to the person that did bad to us .” - Danielle Henderson (21:11 - 21:21) There are three emotional layers inhibiting you from stepping out of the role as an inner wounded child and into an attentive parent. Peel back these layers of ego, self-centeredness and accusatory behavior to begin the process of healing. Drop your ego. When you first open a conversation with your child, give them full permission to correct any bad behavior they see delivered towards your ex. I’m sure this will take some getting used to. But it will keep you in line and remind you of the responsibility you have to model positive behavior and attitude. Encourage your child to use their voice and speak freely and openly. If they desire to contact your ex, commend them on voicing their wants and needs and facilitate a way to make it happen. Remember your past or current relationship with your ex has nothing to do with your child. Adopt a selfless attitude. Try your child’s shoes on for size, metaphorically speaking of course. How would you feel if your parents were getting a divorce? Or maybe you don’t have to imagine, perhaps you’ve actually lived it? The confusion and pain can prove unbearable to a child. There’s no need for them to process this difficult season alone. As their parent, you should always place their wants and needs above your own. Strive to give your child what’s best for them, even if this means allowing your child to live with your ex for a period of time. Recognize your child comes first. Find forgiveness. There’s probably a list of should’ve, would’ve, and could’ve trailing behind you. Stop carrying that burden of shame and guilt from the past! It’s time to forgive yourself and let that heavy burden go. Accept and make peace with the fact that you did the best you could to survive. If necessary, ask for forgiveness from your child for any past bad behavior directed towards your ex. Forgiveness doesn’t negate anything that happened in, through, or as a result of your divorce. But forgiveness can promote healing. “I needed to forgive because I needed to empower my children.” - Diane Foster (13:44 - 13:49) Stripping these emotional layers will be uncomfortable. But keep at it! There’s a reason you’re doing this. All the work you put into healing your inner wounded child is not only for your benefit. It’s for your children. They are the lighthouse in the storm and I daresay, the greatest possible outcome of your fallen marriage. Let their light be your bright reason to persevere as you move your focus from the chaos around you on to them. This week, I challenge you to be brave and initiate a conversation with your child about your divorce. Listen intentionally and strive to meet their needs and wants, even if that includes your ex. Remember, you’re adopting an attitude of humility, selflessness, and forgiveness for the purpose to heal and rebuild your family. The sooner you get out of your way, the sooner you and your child can recover. You have today to begin!
