Roxana Ortega - Actor, Writer, Voiceover Artist & Improvisor

Blissful Spinster

This episode's guest is actor, writer, voiceover artist, and unapologetic improv nerd, Roxana Ortega.Roxana is one of those rare artists whose vulnerability, honesty, and humor hit you all at once – and leave a lasting impression. If her voice sounds familiar, it might be because she's voiced everything from the passionate Frida Casagrande on The Casagrandes to characters in Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, and Monsters at Work. She's narrated Pulitzer Prize-winning novels, voiced countless animated characters, and is a master of voice matching (yes, she's dubbed for Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek). In our conversation, Roxana takes us through the unexpected path that led her to acting – from growing up in an academic household where creativity wasn't considered a “real” career, to having a life-changing epiphany while teaching English in Spain. We talk about the internal battle between playing it safe and going after what you truly want—and what it really means to decide to be an artist. We go deep into the power of improv as both a performance tool and a life philosophy, how failure can be a gift, and why community-building and representation matter now more than ever. Roxana shares how she uses her voice – literally and figuratively – to make space for underrepresented stories, and how she's continued to evolve as a writer, performer, and director.Whether you're someone who thrives on stage or someone working up the courage to take the leap, Roxana's journey will remind you that embracing risk, staying curious, and being fiercely yourself is always worth it.Episode Chapters 00:00 – Welcome + Introduction02:00 – Names, Language, and Laughter04:00 – Academic Roots & Artistic Restlessness07:55 – The Epiphany in Spain13:49 – “I Decided to Be an Actor”16:00 – Improv, Joy, and Redefining Failure21:45 – Performing, Directing, and Creating Her Own Work32:00 – Representation, Identity, and Making Space40:00 – The Tapestry of Humanity49:30 – Amazing Race Nerd Out50:50 – Blissful Spinster & Making Art on Your Own Terms54:35 – Final Words of Wisdom55:14 – What's Next for Roxana58:00 – Wrap-Up & Thank YouRoxana's Bio:Roxana Ortega is an American actor, writer, and voiceover artist who is known for voicing the ever-emotional Frida Casagrande on Nickelodeon's Emmy award-winning and Imagen award-winning cartoon The Casagrandes, a spinoff of the acclaimed series The Loud House.On-camera, she recently starred opposite Danny Trejo, Reno Wilson, and a cast of legends including Garrett Morris, Barry Bostwick, and James Hong in the Universal feature Grand-Daddy Day Care. Other film credits include The Flight Before Christmas opposite Mayim Bialik, Miss Congeniality 2 opposite Sandra Bullock, and Larry Crowne opposite Tom Hanks. Her TV guest-star credits include New Girl, Shonda Rhimes' For The People, The League, Rules of Engagement, NCIS, and the Peabody award-winning satire American Vandal.Behind the mic, she has voiced countless characters in TV, films, trailers, commercials, and some of the biggest video game franchises around, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Final Fantasy, Halo, and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. A two-time AudioFile Earphones Award winner, she has narrated the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, the National Book Award finalist Sabrina & Corina, and the New York Times's non-fiction best seller Random Family to name just a few. In addition, her mimicking skills have led her to voice-match the likes of Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek, and Jennifer Tilly.Born in Los Angeles and raised in Fullerton, CA, Roxana is of mixed Peruvian and Mexican descent. She graduated from U.C. Berkeley Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, then spent a year teaching English in Madrid, Spain. It was there, while she was elaborately acting out English vocabulary to her students, that she realized she wanted to pursue a career in acting. She returned to the Bay Area and immersed herself in theatre and improvisation, then made her way to Los Angeles where she continued her improv and acting training and began writing and performing sketch comedy.Roxana is an alumna of the CBS Diversity Sketch Comedy Showcase, Upright Citizen's Brigade, and the Groundlings Sunday Company. She has written and produced her own shorts and performed storytelling all over Los Angeles, including at The Moth GrandSLAM.She is also the creator and co-host of the live storytelling show Minority Retorts, which spotlights stories from the under-represented, and The Risking Space, a podcast about art and risk. Connect with Roxana on: InstagramLearn more about Latina's Act Up on: InstagramCheck out The Groundlings on: Instagram Links & LoveIf your ears like what they're snacking on, follow, rate, and drop a review—it helps others find the show too.Want to support the show or get access to extra content—like behind-the-scenes journals, guest deep dives, and updates on getting Alone Girl made? Rule Breakers tells the remarkable true story of how entrepreneur Roya Mahboob fought for girls' education in Afghanistan and formed the country's first competitive robotics team, the Afghan Dreamers.  On this very special Season 3 premiere of CherryPop, Meg welcomes to the podcast, the film's inspiration and executive producer, Roya Mahboob, and stars Nikohl Boosheri and Amber Afzali. Nikohl and Amber start things off by sharing heartfelt memories from the set and remark on their meaningful experience filming and bringing this story to life. Roya joins in, and together, they discuss filmmaking as a powerful tool for change in continuing the fight for girls' education, and the importance of  representing Afghan women in their entirety on screen. “We don't see courage being in the absence of fear. We see that it's having fear and moving forward anyways.” - Nikohl Boosheri “In Hollywood we don't see Afghanistan represented with the dark and the light. We often focus on the dark and we often see women with faceless identities or not being fully dynamic characters on screen. I felt good knowing that I can make my community proud by engaging in this project; I can make my family proud. And most of all, I could look back on the project and be like, this is something that I think is bigger than me.” - Amber Afzali Rule Breakers is out now in theaters!  CherryPicks is the best place to see what women think about movies, tv, and more. Are you seeking to achieve deeper intimacy and understanding in your relationships? Do you want to truly connect with your loved ones on critical societal issues? If so, you're in the right place. We dive into the heart of complex relationships and societal perceptions to spark a more profound understanding of how the media we consume affects how we show up in life. In this special episode, I sit down with my daughter, Ava, to explore the often uncomfortable yet crucial conversations about violence against women in entertainment and the importance of setting boundaries. You may not have even noticed the on-screen violence, as we as a society have been so conditioned that it is okay to see women being raped and beaten. But once the veil has been lifted, you will see women's current male-depicted role in most media. Have you ever felt uneasy about your partner's media choices but didn't know how to address it?  You're not alone. Many of us have been told to let it go, not rock the boat, or that it's not a big deal. But the pain of suppressing your truth and seeing no change in your relationship will lead to unhappiness.  Ava shares her discomfort with a popular TV show, Game of Thrones, the portrayal of women, and how she opened a conversation with her boyfriend about his TV choices. This discussion opens a deeper conversation about media influence, relationship dynamics, and societal norms. We offer a fresh perspective on approaching sensitive topics and setting healthy boundaries. This raw and honest episode dives into the intricate layers of relationships and societal issues. Together, we'll explore the power of meaningful conversations and media and discover their profound impact on our lives and relationships. Ciera wrote a script for a short film back in 2022. She was handed rejections, doubt - from others and self - and generally considered it a passion project she created for herself, but perhaps not a commercial success. At Sundance, the question, “What are you working on?” kept coming up, and Ciera took the chance to boldly call herself what she was - a writer and filmmaker - working on a short about LGBTQIA+ youth. It was as if she had a magic wand, manifesting potential out of thin air. She scored an agent and a funder by the time we left just a few days later.By the end of the year, she ran an oversubscribed crowd-funding campaign, won Film Impact Georgia's highest honor, and brought the film to life in the most beautiful and authentic way.Hit play to listen along as she shares every last high and low of ‘just going for it,' in this week's episode of I AM Radio.Follow along with Take Note here:Instagram: @TakeNoteFilmIT ALL Media FilmsThis is an IT ALL Media Production. When my brother said, my stomach hurts, I don't feel well, I don't feel well. I immediately thought he was faking it. I thought he was just trying to get out of class because, listen, I've hid in the basement, I've hid in closets, I've hid under the tables to not go to school. That was us. And then he kept up with it. And I still was kind of like, huh. I think my parents, too, at first maybe thought that. And then... they finally relented and said, okay, we'll take you to the doctor. And he was just in so much pain. And so I went off to school, kind of probably forgot about it. I was like, maybe jealous he was staying home, to be honest. And then when I came out of school, my parents weren't there to pick me up.”When Robert was 10 years old, his brother passed away from cancer. He emphasizes the need to be there for others and lead with kindness, understanding that everyone is going through their own struggles. His personal experience with loss and grief has taught him the power of authenticity and vulnerability and the importance of finding joy and positivity in the face of tragedy.Robert is an award-winning actor, writer, and celebrity interviewer with a passion for storytelling and spreading kindness. When I got on a little further into the business. Rodney King came to my office because he wanted me to do a project with him. Sweetest, kindest, nicest man you ever wanna meet. Those kind of adventures, have filled my life. But Brad, you do know me also, that if nobody's there, I will talk to a chain link fence."  Dolores Robinson Dolores Robinson may not be a household name, but I can assure you she is Hollywood royalty. A youthful 86 years of age, Dolores has been defying the odds her whole life. Finding herself single in 1974, she packed up her two kids into a green Volvo station wagon and headed west from Philadelphia to California to start a new life.  College-educated, she accepted a job as a receptionist in a talent agency, quickly working her way up to a full-fledged agent. Just two years later, she founded her own management company, Dolores Robinson Entertainment, and became a trailblazing talent manager and power player who made her name when there were few women, much less women of color, with any influence on the business side of showbiz. She helped launch the careers of Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tea Leoni, Emilio Estevez, Mariska Hargitay and, of course, her own daughter, Holly Robinson Peete. The Personal Managers Hall of Fame inducted Dolores in 2017 acknowledging her as the first black female manager in film and television. If you think this is going to be a Man Show, Howard Stern or Mantown style episode, you're listening to the wrong podcast!! In this episode we discuss women in entertainment that we admire for their incredible talent and the amazing contributions they made to pave the way for the women that followed them in the world of music, film and television.  And the ridicule they faced at a time when it was difficult for a woman to assert her independence in an industry that has been dominated by men.  Bret, Jamie and Wayne discuss some of the most talented women in the industry and why their contributions were so important and should never be forgotten. Like in the case of someone like Mabel Normand whose contributions aren't as remembered as they once were. Please join us as we salute some amazing talents in the hopes you will check out their work and why we think they kick ass!!

Youtube Version https://youtu.be/r34V0yT_0_s https://wendyleequietstorm.com Wendy Lee a Virginia native never aspired to be a comedian. So the age-old saying life imitates art is true when it comes to this clean female Christian comedian “Quietstorm”. Wendy Lee (Quietstorm) began her professional comedic career after accepting an invite to attend a church talent show. During the show, the host announced that they needed to fill some spots and anyone in the audience with gifts or talents can come up to present. Since all the acts before her had been done once or twice, this innately shy person decided to tell some jokes. Wowing the audience that night Wendy Lee (Quietstorm) left with a potential gig to do the same thing at another church venue. Referral after referral she went on providing laughter at various church events and programs for several years, “Just having fun”. Wendy Lee (Quietstorm) has worked with internationally known comedian Hamburger, Anna Douglass, Nikita B Williams, Sylvia Tray Morrison (America's First Black Female Impressionist) and the late Joe Recca (Chicago) to name a few. Her accomplishments thus far include performances at the Hopewells's Historic Beacon Theatre, Richmond Funnybone Club, Cozzy's Comedy Club, and Franklin's Main Event. Her soft and mysterious voice can be heard on several podcasts as a featured guest on radio and other media outlets. Wendy Lee (Quietstorm) is only scratching the surface in the world of comedy in a league of her own. Staying her authentic self and giving clean comedy in her own way sets her apart from others before and after her. “For with God, nothing shall be impossible”

If so why is this happening to Harvey Weinstein right now? Afterall this type of behaviour is endemic in the entertainment industry. We simplify everything and explain two basic rules of human behaviour. 1: People do unto you what you let them. 2. It's largely not what you do but how you do it.
