Real centre forwards were old fashioned battering rams like Nat Lofthouse, Ted Drake of the great Arsenal side of the 1930s and Bobby Smith the rampaging leader of the Spurs double winning attack. As football has become more skilful, they have largely been replaced by False 9s as they are now called or deep-lying centre forwards as they were in the days of Don Revie and the Hungarian Hidegkuti. Jon Holmes, Patrick Barclay and Jon Holmes panel discuss the impact on the game of the change and surprisingly all three of them retain a nostalgic love of the centre forwards of their youth. In this latest Weekend Warm-up, as heard on 1866 Sport, Phil & Ellie spoke to Spireites legend Sean O'Neill about his time at Don Revie's Leeds United and his 12 years as a Chesterfield player.
Don Revie had made Leeds United the best football team in the country in the 1960s and 70s. Upon his departure, Leeds had ‘done a Leeds' multiple times since and after numerous financial disasters they were a generation out of the top flight. They needed somebody to come along and pick them out of the mire. So, they went Loco and it got back to the Premier League. 00:00 – Introduction 00:25 – Since Revie 07:00 – Loco Leeds 24:55 – The Legacy Learn more about your ad choices. The 1970s continue to produce moments that echo half a century later. Liverpool are denied the treble by Manchester United but content themselves with a first European Cup and the retention of their league title, as Kevin Keegan heads off into the sunset. Clive Thomas looms large for Evertonians, Don Revie packs his bucket and spade and trades England for the UAE, and there's skulduggery aplenty at Highfield Road in an end of season relegation battle.
There's a new name at the top of the First Division as QPR go toe-to-toe with Bob Paisley's Liverpool for the title, and a new name on the FA Cup with Southampton seeing off Manchester United at Wembley. England start to stutter under Don Revie and a manager who will one day follow him into that job starts to make his reputation at Lincoln City. Steven Scragg and Gary Thacker are joined by Dr David Turner, a senior lecturer in Sports Coaching at Anglia Ruskin University, a member of the Cambridge Centre for Sport and Exercise Science research, and a devoted fan of that memorable QPR side.
Another tumultuous season beckons as Don Revie struggles to get a tune out of England, Brian Clough finds life at Leeds even tougher, Derby win the title as just seven points separate the top eight, Manchester United go up, Chelsea go down and Billy Bremer and Kevin Keegan get naked for charity.
Picking up our trawl through the 1970s, the team alight upon 1970/71, a season where Arsenal re-emerged from Tottenham's shadow to do the double (though Spurs did at least win the League Cup as consolation). There's a power shift on Merseyside, Manchester United remain in the dumps, and Don Revie wonders just what he did to upset the footballing gods.
Graham and Jamie are joined by Sunderland super fan Phil Craig to discuss and rank the famous SUNDERLAND FA Cup winning side of 1972/73. Bob Stokoe's unfancied second division Sunderland cause one of the FA Cup's greatest shocks when they topple Don Revie's mighty Leeds United in the FA Cup Final, creating some iconic moments in doing so.Phil shares his experiences of this team and the great effect the cup victory had on the Town (at the time) of SunderlandDownload, subscribe and be apart of how each team is ranked .If you enjoy these podcasts, please don't forget to subscribe and give us a rating and also tell everyone about them!Or visit our website at www.thegreatestteam.co

Welcome to another episode of OTTplay Lost and Found, im your host Nikhil. The world's most popular sport, football, has produced captivating stories over the decades. From South America to Europe and to the Far East, inspirational stories about footballers, managers, and teams that broke barriers have reverberated across the world. But the story of football manager Brian Clough and his rise to the very top of English football is often less talked about outside the British Isles. The incredible stories of Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Matt Busby, Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, and Sir Bobby Robson have been etched in football folklore, thanks to their association with global football clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Barcelona. However, despite having never managed footballing powerhouses such as the aforementioned clubs, Brian Clough created history by taking relatively lesser-known clubs such as Derby County and Nottingham Forest from obscurity to title winners. The Damned United, directed by Tom Hooper, chronicles the life of the charismatic yet controversial figure of Brian Clough and his rivalry with Don Revie. The film begins in the late ‘60s with Clough as manager of the lower league side Derby County, as he is preparing to welcome the Top Division champions Leeds United, and their manager Don Revie, to Derby for an FA Cup fixture. Revie's refusal to have a customary drink with the home team's manager after the match and the alleged disrespect shown by Leeds United sparked a fire within Clough. This would start a chain of events with Clough guiding Derby through the league divisions, climbing the football league tables, and finally dethroning Leeds as the champions of England. The film's primary focus is, however, on the 44-day period when Clough replaced Don Revie as the manager of Leeds. His troubled relationship with the players, whom he had once berated, was always going to end with him leaving Leeds United. The film describes in detail why Leeds United are regarded as the most hated champions in English football history. Michael Sheen essays this role of Brian Clough, supported by an excellent cast of Stephen Graham, Timothy Spall, and Colm Meaney. The film does not delve into Clough's success at Nottingham Forest, where he took them to back-to-back European Cup trophies. The film will keep one hooked from start to finish, as it navigates through the complexities of one of football's greatest managers. A man who legendary Manchester United captain Roy Keane referred to as the best he's played under in his illustrious career. If you havent watched this film yet then do so its streaming on Apple TV+ and Google Play moviesWell thats the OTTplay Lost and Found for today, until the next episode its your host Nikhil signing out.Aaj kya dekhoge OTTplay se poochoWritten by - Ryan Gomez

This week Joe, Marty and Jason are without Scott but they are joined by a special guest in Marty Gilmore of the Ballymena Shamrock CSC to talk about the effects the last year has had on the CSC and how these things will effect things going forward. There's also Sevco ahead, a 6-0 doing ofLivingston just gone and the usual tangents. Friday nights with the Don Revie as the last year has demanded. Enjoy! Hail Hail!!

Giddy on Walnut Whips and engrossed in button football, magazine editor Andy Lyons, writer Harry Pearson and host Daniel Gray discuss British managers in Asia from Dave Booth’s moisturising routine to Don Revie’s Keith Harris puppet misery. There is talk of altered pitches, the goalkeeper who stole a child’s pen and distracting views from grounds, and a look between the pages of WSC magazine issue 407. Back in Don Revie's day, Leeds United were renowned for their ability to spot young Scottish talent. Stuart McKinstry is a player for the future, but he's also a blast from the past.
Mike & Dan talk plagiarism, 80s New Romantics and how Trump is like Don Revie. Plus they rhyme Dunder Mifflin with Bumbler Griftin'. That's some commitment there. In this episide, James and James talk to one of English football's genuine legends - Malcolm Macdonald. Or 'Supermac' as he is fondly known to many. We discuss his early career starting as a left back, his move to Newcastle where he wore the famous number 9 shirt, and his surprisingly low number of games for the England national team (and the reason behind that... *cough* Don Revie *cough*). Enjoy!
John Giles talks to Eamon about the classic Leeds United teams of the 1960s and 1970s the Don Revie built. The Stand is proudly sponsored by Tesco.
Derek chats to former footballer and First Minister Henry McLeish. It’s another fascinating interview as Henry looks back on his brief playing career where he was once on the books of Leeds United under the legendary Don Revie and starred for his hometown club East Fife before injury cut his career short.Henry also chats about his 2018 book 'Scottish Football: Requiem or Renaissance' where he challenges the powers that be that are running the game and questions why we’re continually failing as a nation when it comes to the national team.Enjoy folks!
In a dramatic week of Premier League football, both on and off the pitch, it is important that to take the time out to remember the legacy of Jack Charlton. Part 1 It was with great sadness on Saturday morning that the football world learned of the passing of Jack Charlton at age 85. He was a World Cup winner with England in 1966, a league and FA Cup winner under Don Revie at Leeds United and, most notably, the most successful manager the Republic of Ireland has ever had. Hello and welcome to the Total Football podcast, I am your host Declan Harte and joining me is Andrew Conway. Andrew, just what did big Jack mean for this country? Part 2 In recent years the North London Derby has been the highlight of the season for neutrals, but not this weekend. A 2-1 win for Tottenham, and a moral victory for Jose Mourinho against fun. Chelsea's form continues to nose dive, a 3-0 defeat away to Sheffield United is a particularly striking low point for Frank Lampard this season. Though Leicester's total collapse appears to be Chelsea's savior. A 4-1 defeat to relegation candidates Bournemouth has delivered a potentially fatal blow to their Champions League aspirations Meanwhile, the chasing pack all picked up 3-0 wins in their last game. The aforementioned 3-0 win for Chris Wilder's men, of course, but also Wolves' 3-0 win over Everton and Manchester United's 3-0 win against Aston Villa. Part 3 Last week we discussed the race for the Champions League places. But with today's news that Manchester City's appeal to CAS over their two-year ban from the competition has been overturned, what are the implications of this for City, UEFA, Financial Fair Play and the rest of the Premier League? Part 4 After a dismal weekend for the Champions League placed teams, can Chelsea and Leicester turn it around? Or will the chasing pack reach striking distance heading into the final week of Premier League action? And who will earn their place in this year's FA Cup final?
We're gonna pod about it Shea & Dave. We're gonna pod about The Damned United if it's the last thing we do. And so we did. Not for 44 days, but this week Shea & Dave dive into the biopic that captures so much of the romance & heartache that we love about football so much, but also comes with its controversies over the creative liberties from both the book and the film. We discuss how such liberties sometimes are necessary for filmic narrative, as well as the cinematography, the wonderful performances by Michael Sheen & co, the love & romance of footy on display, the historical narrative of Clough vs Revie, as well as David drinking his celebration cups throughout the pod for Liverpool's long awaited title.
Italy basks in the joy of Maradona's failure as they prepare to see their team take on Austria in Rome. Questions arise about the host's strike partnerships and also as to why Schillaci and Vialli's hair fortune's have differed so greatly. Speaking of hair, we see a Colombian golden generation lead by Carlos Valderama facing the United Arab Emirates side built on Don Revie's shattered reputation. And we hear the term "dictatorship World Cup" coined as the Soviet Union play Romania. In the Irish camp there are injury concerns with the England game only two days away and some old school yard urban myths re-emerge.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/extratimecom)
Derek chats to Dunfermline Athletic legend Bert Paton to look back at an eventful career in the game.Bert’s story is fascinating, before his time at the Pars he was on the books of Leeds United as a kid and a cruel twist of fate meant he missed out on the chance of becoming part of the Don Revie revolution - he did meet his wife there though so every cloud!Bert relives his time as a player at East End Park where he lifted the Scottish Cup and came close to starring in a European final, he also talks us through his managerial career in an interview packed with stories and laughs throughout.Enjoy folks!

In part two, Tony Currie talks more about his lengthy love affair with Sheffield United. But he would sign for their Yorkshire rivals Leeds when most of the talent assembled by Don Revie was still at Elland Road. There was no love lost between Tony and Revie – as England boss the renowned manager didn't take to him.Tony also shares his thoughts on the current heady days for Chris Wilder's side. And there's brilliant chat about his best goal – for Leeds at Arsenal, how he knocked back Manchester United to stay at Bramall Lane, and how he risked life and limb on legendary BBC programme Superstars – they sure don't make 'em like that anymore! Thanks, Tony.Graham.

"Why Leeds? Well, apart from a rumoured offer from Kuwait, they were the only club that came in for him. Even then, Stein wasn’t the first choice to replace Jimmy Armfield at Elland Road. He wasn’t even second choice. Cussins initially offered the job to Lawrie McMenemy and his suggestion of John Giles was over-ruled by the Leeds board." Episode Seventy Eight of the Blizzard Podcast looks back on "44 Days, Later" by Lawrence Donegan, first published in Issue One back in June 2011. In it, he compares the short-lived tenures of two of football's greatest managers at Leeds United. Don Revie lasted no longer than Brian Clough in the Leeds dugout, and from his inauspicious start it's not hard to see why. "The optimism that greeted the Stein era at Elland Road didn’t disappear — his reputation as a manager and a man saw to that — but it was tempered by a couple of losses in the league, against Manchester City and Tottenham, and two indifferent draws against West Brom in the League Cup. There was very little transfer activity, evidence perhaps that the appeal of playing for Leeds, and for one of the greatest managers of the post-war era, was not what it once was." If you have any feedback comments or suggestions email podcast@theblizzard.co.uk or find us on Twitter @blzzrd. Issue One, like all issues of The Blizzard, is available on a pay-what-you-like basis from www.theblizzard.co.uk. The latest Big Interview clip show is about the gaffer, whoever he may be. Pretty much every single footballer we spoke to during the first season of these podcasts had at least one incredible story about a manager they had played under. In this podcast you'll meet motivators, bullies, innovators and comedians. Sometimes, that's just one guy we're talking about. We're going to start and finish with two people who played under Jose Mourinho – although it is fair to say that Damien Duff and Kevin Bridges don't have too much else in common on the footballing front. In between those two, Chris Waddle tells us what he now sees as the method behind the bullying of Arthur Cox at Newcastle United. Gary McAllister then tells us how Howard Wilkinson transformed Leeds United from a Second Division team into a side capable of winning the English Championship. Joe Jordan shows us the revolutionary preparations undertaken by Don Revie; Peter Beardsley rooms with his Fulham manager Kevin Keegan, in a flat above the...

Joe Jordan was a footballer of immense talent and character. A proud Scot who is one of a select band of players to score at three World Cups finals, Joe's club career took him to the very top of the European game with Leeds, Manchester United and AC Milan. Joe's reflection on that immense Leeds team of the 1970s - under Don Revie - is a fascinating insight into a club whose natural talent was often overshadowed by their reputation for physical toughness. There are huge characters in this, Part One, of a conversation I hugely enjoyed. Jimmy Delaney, Bobby Collins, Jimmy Johnstone, Johan Cruyff, Revie, Billy Bremner, John Giles - Joe's reflections on a golden era will captivate you, I'm sure. Part Two will follow on Saturday. Sit back and enjoy. Graham See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The remix of Brian Clough and Don Revie's famous 1974 interview the night of Clough's sacking after 44 days in charge of Leeds United.
