They share tips on setting boundaries, being a role model for mindful technology use, and introducing self-directed play options like Tonies that empower kids to take charge of their own fun. Welcome to Tech and Teaching Tuesdays! In this episode, we tackle the crucial question: How can you ensure your child's online safety? Join me as I share technology tips tailored for toddlers to teens. We kick things off by acknowledging the expansive digital landscape our kids are growing up in, moving beyond mere screen time management to establish early childhood boundaries. In middle childhood, the focus shifts to fostering critical thinking and online etiquette, utilizing the "Three W's" - Who, What, and Why - as a powerful tool for guiding your child's online behavior. Consider taping these questions as a friendly reminder inside the cover of their tablet or in their playroom. Venturing into adolescence, a time of heightened emotions and rapid changes, we emphasize the significance of open communication and privacy awareness. Creating a digital contract with your teen, as discussed in Episode 12 and reiterated today, becomes a valuable tool outlining expectations, consequences, and fostering collaboration. For those eager to dig deeper into tech safety and communication strategies, check out Episodes 12 and 13 of No Problem Parenting. Additionally, Episode 24 introduces an alternative to screens with Drew Vernon from Tonies.com, offering a screen-free, imagination-building experience for your little ones. Stay tuned for our next episode, where we'll explore the delicate balance of determining the right amount of screen time for your child. Ensuring our children's online safety may be tricky, but putting in the effort early on will save you frustration in the long run. It's all about the power of play this week as Kris welcomes Drew Vernon, the U.S. Marketing Lead at tonies, a popular European children's audio system that has recently launched in the United States. Drew talks about his former experience as Brand Director at Lego and in marketing at Procter and Gamble, and how it helps him now in his role with tonies. Drew shares why he believes a child who is a strong player is also a strong learner, problem solver, and a more overall happy person. Drew explains how tonies provide an amazing learning tool for social and emotional wellness and screen-free enrichment. Let's play! Key Takeaways: [7:45] Yes, Drew is a Denver Broncos fan! [8:10] How did Drew's path lead him to a role as the Marketing Director for tonies? He also explains how working for P&G and Lego, along with opening his own child care center, influenced how he blended marketing with knowing how important it is for good communication and quality service. [12:17] Fun fact: Drew lived in Japan and was actually a Japanese tour guide. He also speaks enough Japanese to order at a restaurant, and get some nods from the chefs. [16:15] Drew explains the mission behind tonies, an imagination-building, screen-free digital listening experience. [18:25] Drew talks about the influencer marketing outreach to educators and childcare professionals and partnering with other companies to promote mindfulness and relaxation tools for children. Quotes: “I would have loved to have something like this when I was running my center.” — Drew “I fell in love with marketing at an early age. I think I was in high school and I really found it just to be the intersection of human psychology of understanding how the mind works and putting a product or service to that to what are the products and services that meet the needs and wants of different consumers.” — Drew “I've started to think of myself less as a marketer, and more as an advocate for children and early childhood development.” — Drew “My advice would be just to realize that the more we can remember that we have the ability to impact future generations.” — Drew Sponsored By: ChildCare Education Institute (CCEI) Use code CCSC5 to claim a free course! Stories, and storytelling, are such wonderful and even magical components of our lives - and especially the lives of our children. With the pressures to purchase toys to enhance development, we want to use the toys that nature provides us as well as toys that preserve the creativity of the child. Drew Vernon, Marketing Director of Tonies, joins us to talk about how the stories we fall in love with in the early days and years of our lives transcend simple entertainment - they teach us about the world and about each other. Join us as we talk about Drew's work with another iconic toy brand, and learn how his recent work at Tonies, with their tactile, screen-free Toniebox, is helping introduce pre-readers and developing readers to the wonders of narrative story telling. When children can just 'listen' to a story versus 'seeing' it played out in front of them, it sparks the creativity in their brain and challenges them to bring the story to life all on their own, using their imagination. When you think of encouraging kids to read, the first person that pops into many minds is LeVar Burton. I remember watching LeVar on Reading Rainbow talk about the power of reading. He would take us on many adventures and share some books that we should check out. My wife and I passed on the importance reading to our daughters. They love to read and make their own stories. I love when they share their favorite books with us and share the stories that they created. Another company that encourages kids to read is Tonies. I spoke with Drew Vernon, who is the Marketing Director of Tonies about fatherhood and the cool new things that are happening at Tonies. Tonies was created by Patric Fassbender and Marcus Stahl. The reason for their creation was for one reason, their kids. Patrick and Marcus feel that childhood should be a magical time full of big adventures and lovable memories. They wanted to create a way for kids to experience storytelling in a digital age, that stimulates their imagination and creativity in ways that a screen can't. They made the Toniebox for kids and parents who want to feel good about their entertainment at home and to bring back imagination in its purest form. Tonies is an immersive, wondrous experience you can feel good about, but more importantly a community you can be part of now and for many years to come. One of the main reasons I started a podcast is to share ideas. Sometimes these ideas just happen to also be products and today I have an amazing idea and story-based product to share with you. I am chatting with Drew Vernon, marketing director for Tonies, USA, but this is not a sponsored episode. Drew and I have similar passions for creative play and screen-free storytelling that develops a young person's imagination. We both love inspiring creativity in kids and adults and of course for me, it's always about stories and connection. I think you're really going to enjoy this conversation and the chance to learn about a product that should be championed and shared. So, what exactly is this product that promotes ALL of these things? It's a Toniebox. In simple terms it is a box that even young child can learn to use (and not destroy) that plays audio when you attach a small figure, called a Tonie. There are content Tonies for dozens of beloved characters from classic literature to Disney movies and more on the way. In fact, Winnie the Pooh was just added! And Tonies is continually partnering with companies—like Go Noodle and expert personalities—like LeVar Burton—to provide top notch content and an inspiring and elevating listening experience. Even with all of this amazing content, I am still a BIGGER fan of the Creative Tonies (little pointy-eared figures) that work with a FREE app to allow a grandparent (or any other loved one) to send messages and stories to a child. The Creative Tonie also allows kids to create their own content. Drew talked about giving his kids some creative parameters that unleashed 45 minutes of imaginative play—so cool. And, I can just imagine recording my voice sharing a personal, family or family history story in my app and having that instantly made available and enticing to my granddaughter and future grandkids! Audio stories take children on a journey from consuming to creating. First they create active listeners and then they turn those listeners into authors. — Drew Vernon IF you're a teacher, learn more about Tonies for Teachers and sign up to be in the loop moving forward!Marketing from Tonies: Childhood is a sacred, precious time in life. Even long after we've grown, the memories we make in childhood have the power to transport us back to a time or place or person to re-experience what we felt in that moment long ago. The stories we fall in love with in the early days and years of our lives transcend simple entertainment, they seed powerful memories and spark nostalgia. They teach us about the world and about each other. They become a part of a narrative we carry with us throughout our lives. Meet the FoundersWe are Patric Faßbender and Marcus Stahl and we created tonies with one thing in mind: our kids. Childhood should be a magical time full of big adventures and loveable memories. This week we chat with Drew Vernon, Marketing Director at Tonies, former Brand Director at Lego, former Marketing Researcher for P&G, founder of 'Moppets' drop in childcare and a loving father.Drew came on to chat to us about the fast growing product called the Toniebox. 'The Toniebox uses audio storytelling to introduce pre-readers and developing readers to the wonders of narrative long before children can read the words in a book. When children combine tonies with play, they unlock the real wonder of storytelling - a mix of fascination, surprise, curiosity and a craving for exploration all stirred together. Through this, they discover powers within to create and transport themselves to worlds and wonders all on their own.' Created by a group of preschool fathers , we learned that the Toniebox is not just a device to play songs and tell stories but a gateway to opening and unlocking a childs imagination. We hope you enjoy it! To check out Tonies, click here. Support us:https://www.facebook.com/littlestepsbigfutureshttps://www.instagram.com/little_steps_big_futures/

There’s a saying that the most powerful mechanism we have to motivate, to inspire, and to educate is storytelling. And the purpose of storytelling is not to tell you how to think, but to give the listener the tools to draw conclusions, which is why storytelling has been such a useful tool for parents, teachers, and educators of all kinds for centuries. Both adults and kids can understand and learn from stories, and the old school method is making a comeback. Meet the Toniebox, a loveable little storytime friend that’s giving kids an alternative to screens by putting the power of storytelling back into their hands.“If you're a child trying to make sense of the world and trying to learn and grow, what better way to do that than to put hundreds of stories in front of them, to see how other people came across obstacles and had to use creative thinking to overcome challenges. From that sense, it's very empowering and it's very immersive in helping a child grow their imagination.”Drew Vernon is the U.S. Marketing Director for Tonies, an audio storytelling box that introduces children to the wonders of narrative long before they start reading. On this episode of Marketing Trends, Drew dives into his marketing strategy for bringing an internationally-loved product stateside and why marketing storytelling is a winning strategy. Plus, he discusses the importance of having reliable characters and intellectual property that customers can connect with,, and he details how to conquer the biggest obstacle right out of the gates when you convince the customer to buy the product and keep coming back for more.Main TakeawaysFamiliarity Brings Success: When launching a new product domestically, it’s helpful to have familiar IPs that your customer can relate and connect to. By having characters and artwork that is familiar, it helps ease the mental lift of the consumer and helps them draw conclusions to what their overall experience will be with the product.Adding Value: By creating an ecosystem where the biggest obstacle in the consumer’s journey is the initial buy of the box, Tonies was able to solve for that and then create a lasting value proposition that allows users to continuously add to their existing ecosystem for a relatively low valueMixing it Up: One of the differences between marketing the Tonies box is the ability to showcase it to consumers not just as a toy, but also as a tool for delivering various forms of content. By diversifying the product's value, Tonies is able to market to difference sectors, including consumers and the education system.---Marketing Trends podcast is brought to you by Salesforce.
