Alessandro Duranti, Distinguished Research Professor of Anthropology at UCLA, presents archival footage he filmed of Walter Capps' 1996 campaign for U.S. Congress to analyze how the political candidate framed his choice to run for office. Using semantic and narrative analyses, Duranti shows how Capps refined his campaign announcement to better generate voter enthusiasm and how Capps' public and private comments about the campaign reflected his ethical and political values. Capps was elected to Congress in 1996, and died in October 1997 after serving 10 months in office. Duranti became a close friend of the Capps family during his year-long ethnographic research, and he reflects on the role of family in Capps' life and campaign. Podcasti „Pihtas pĂ”hjas“ tarkade klubi vĂ”tab kokku aprillikuu teise poole korvpallisĂŒndmused. Stuudios tavapĂ€rane kolmik Gert KullamĂ€e, Janar Talts ja Ivar JurtĆĄenko. Saate esimene pool kuulub puhtalt PAF Eesti meistriliiga veerandfinaalide lahkamisele. Kas see on okei, liigal mingisugused reeglid ikkagi on? Kalev/Cramo pani selgelt paika Tallinna Kalev/Audentese. KĂŒsimusi tekitab seeria viimane mĂ€ng, kus Kalev/Audentes jĂ€i 38 punkti peale. Huvitav, mis tunne oli peatreeneril Rauno Pehkal? Viimsi/Sportlandi ja TalTech/Optibeti seeriast lootsid saatejuhid enamat, aga lĂ€ks Viimsile kuivalt 3:0. Kas TalTechi peatreeneritöö on Alar Varraku talendi raiskamine Mis eesmĂ€rk meeskonnal ĂŒldse on? TĂ€helepanu saavad ka Eesti madalamad liigad, erinevad eurosarjad, eestlastega seotud liikumised ja uudised. VĂ€he pikemad jutud tulevad Euroliiga ja NBA play-off'idest. Kuum teema on mĂ”istagi Madridi Reali ning Belgradi Partizani mĂ€ngijate kaklus. NBA vĂ€ljakutelt tunnustame soomlast Lauri Markkaneni ja Los Angeles Lakersit. Podcasti peatoetaja PAF-i auhinnamĂ€ngu vĂ”itis sel korral loosi tahtel Kaarel Maripuu. Palju Ă”nne! VĂ”itjaga vĂ”etakse ĂŒhendust. Eelmisel korral kĂŒsisime: „Mitmes Eesti meistriliiga veerandfinaalpaaris vĂ”idab seeria nĂ”rgema asetusega meeskond?“ Õige vastus oli „1“ ja Ă”igeid vastuseid laekus 15. KĂ”ige enam pakuti varianti „0“, ent sellega pĂŒĂŒnele ei pÀÀsenud. KĂ€esoleva saate kĂŒsimus puudutab NBA-d. VĂ€rskelt tuli uudis, et Kevin Durant sĂ”lmis Nike'iga eluaegse lepingu. Temast sai kolmas NBA korvpallur, kes sarnase diili teinud. Kes on enne Duranti sĂ”lminud Nike'iga sarnase lepingu? Tahame teada kahte nime. Lööge julgelt auhinnamĂ€ngus kaasa ning pange vastused teele e-maili aadressile: pihtaspohjas@delfi.ee.

Language Ideologies as Urban Infrastructure: A Socio-Spatial Analysis of Identity, Belonging, and Multilingualism in Pune, Maharashtra

Part of the International conference on Maharashtra in September 2021 - Jessica Chandras, Wake Forest University, USA By examining the contemporary multiscriptual and multilingual landscape of the city of Pune, Maharashtra, this paper explores the ways language ideologies circulate about Marathi, English, Urdu, and Hindi to illuminate a linguistic infrastructure of the city. Pune is an apt city to explore circulating multilingual ideologies as the city maintains an identity as a stronghold of Maharashtrian history and culture but has also undergone rapid demographic and social change since liberalization in the 1990s, tied to an expansion of the IT industry and as a hub for education. I explore language ideologies, as beliefs about languages and their speakers that motivate behavior, to argue that language is one way that Pune residents organize socio-spatial knowledge of the city and navigate belonging (Schieffelin et al, 1998). Through qualitative ethnographic research from 2016 to 2018, including asking individuals with insider knowledge of a place to draw a cognitive map of Pune to create an intimate view of locations based on layering subjective experiences (Graham 1976), this linguistic anthropological study extends a discussion of the power of both written and spoken language in Pune to socially construct understandings of identity and belonging (Jaffe & De Koning 2015, Lynch 1960). Data includes seven cognitive maps of the city's socio-spatial linguistic boundaries along with images of signage in three distinct Pune neighborhoods to analyze interlocutor's making sense of contemporary urban Indian multilingual and multiscriptual space as a cultural category (Duranti & Goodwin 1992, Feld & Basso 1996). Findings indicate the use and broadly circulating knowledge of different languages and scripts in the city coincide with many socio-political identifying features and social stratification through caste categories, socioeconomic statuses, and religious/ethnic backgrounds. Understanding a city's infrastructure and spatial organization through language guides Pune residents' experiences of the city and their roles within it.

Alessandro Duranti is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at UCLA, where he served as Dean of Social Sciences from 2009-2016. In his book The Anthropology of Intentions: Language in a World of Others (Cambridge University Press, 2015), Duranti explores the relevance of intentions in making sense of what others say reflecting the range of his intellectual curiosity: from analytic and continental philosophical foundations of the concept of intentionality to political discourse in Samoa and the U.S., anthropologists' accounts of the opacity of other minds in Pacific societies, and the embodiment of intentions in jazz improvisation. Duranti takes up the stalled opposition between, on the one hand, analytic philosophy of language–which tends towards individualistic conceptions of intentions–and, on the other hand, linguistic anthropology–which rejects this armchair universalizing, offering counterexamples of contexts where inner states are not socially salient. In making the case for a continuum of intentionality, he offers a way to reconcile this opposition: the salience of intentions varies across individuals and cultures, and with it, the social and linguistic elaboration of being-in-the-world varies too. For Duranti, intentionality is an irreducibly intersubjective phenomenon: an individual's ostensible, performed, and uniquely conceived meaning is always in tension with the meaning interpreted and evaluated by a community, whether present or not. We are not just beings in the world: we always exist in a world of others. This intersubjective tension undergirds the social construction of, for example, authenticity and responsibility in politics, the ability to be an active listener in music, and the translation of a concept from one social world to another. This interview discusses The Anthropology of Intentions in relation to Duranti's wide-ranging academic career, up to and including his recent sabbatical excursions into the ancient Greek world in search of the origins of the notions of intention, mind, and soul. Alessandro Duranti is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at UCLA, where he served as Dean of Social Sciences from 2009-2016. In his book The Anthropology of Intentions: Language in a World of Others (Cambridge University Press, 2015), Duranti explores the relevance of intentions in making sense of what others say reflecting the range of his intellectual curiosity: from analytic and continental philosophical foundations of the concept of intentionality to political discourse in Samoa and the U.S., anthropologists’ accounts of the opacity of other minds in Pacific societies, and the embodiment of intentions in jazz improvisation. For Duranti, intentionality is an irreducibly intersubjective phenomenon: an individual’s ostensible, performed, and uniquely conceived meaning is always in tension with the meaning interpreted and evaluated by a community, whether present or not. We are not just beings in the world: we always exist in a world of others. This intersubjective tension undergirds the social construction of, for example, authenticity and responsibility in politics, the ability to be an active listener in music, and the translation of a concept from one social world to another.
