Dave Niland is our guest for this episode. He is the head men's basketball coach at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Penn State Behrend in Erie, PA. He just completed his 30th season guiding the Behrend Lions program. He comes from a family of legendary Buffalo (NY) sports leaders. Niland has produced 29 winning seasons in the last 30 years to rank 20th among NCAA Division III programs for winningest teams of the decade. The Lions also have earned an NCAA or Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason bid in 26 of the past 28 years. Niland is the all-time leader in men's basketball coaching victories with 580 entering the 2025-2026 season. The Lions have advanced to the NCAA Tournament eight times and has made 17 appearances in the ECAC South Region Tournament, winning the title in 1998-99 and 2009-10. Niland has been named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Coach of the Year seven times- a league and college record. His teams have won seven regular-season league titles and six conference tournament championships. In 2008-09, the men's basketball team forged a record of 18-10 and earned its third ECAC Tournament bid. The previous year, Niland led the Behrend Lions to an impressive 24-5 record, as the team captured the regular-season AMCC championship and the conference tournament before eventually falling in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in Rochester, New York. That squad's defensive prowess was recognized for the second time in four seasons, as Behrend led NCAA Division III in scoring defense, limiting the opposition to a measly 54.6 points per game. During the 2006-07 season, Niland's team posted an impressive 21-8 mark and advanced to the ECAC Southern Region Tournament Championship Game. The year before, Niland's program received the Schoenfeld Award, the highest honor the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association (COBA) bestows each year. This coveted award is presented to the team identified as having "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators."His 2003-04 team led all of NCAA Division III in scoring defense and posted a 22-3 record entering the NCAA Division III Tournament. The 1999-2000 team had the best season in school history, setting the school record for wins with 26 while advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight- the first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for men's basketball. Also, in 1998-99, his squad earned the ECAC Southern Region Championship. Niland came to Behrend after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at Canisius College and one season at Elmira College. He was a four-year letterman and captain during his senior year as a basketball standout at LeMoyne College. He earned his master's degree in physical education from Canisius and is now also a lecturer in health and physical education at Penn State Behrend. Dave and his wife, Debra, who has over three decades of service at Erie Homes for Children and Adults empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities through volunteerism and exploration, are the proud parents of Andy, Sara, and Matt.
Holy crap this weeks episode literally blew my mind! I don't have confirmation on this but I'm almost positive this next story we're telling you this week inspired the entire "Saw" franchise. This week we're talking about Brian Wells, a pizza delivery man from Erie Pennsylvania who robbed a bank with a handcuffed collar bomb around his neck ...that exploded 30 minutes later....while still attached to his head ... But was he a hostage or a co-conspirator? In 1966, the Seagrams, a rock-n-roll band made up of four teenage girls from Academy High School, was playing local Erie venues. But in the summer of 1967, the band got an agent in New York City who changed their name to The Female Monkees and sent them on tour of the East Coast and Canada. This episode chronicles what must have been a memorable few years for the young members of the Seagrams/Female Monkees. Thanks to the JPT Foundation for sponsoring the Erie Music History podcast. It's the holiday season, so hoop-de-doo and dickory dock. Before he became the bass player for Donnie Iris and Cruisers in 1992, Paul Goll played in Erie bands like The Web of Sound, Anacrusis, and Real To Reel in the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1970s he left Erie for Florida and toured up and down the East Coast with his band Powerglide for over a decade before returning to Erie to Play in Mr. Gone. Throughout those years, he has played with some of Erie's finest rock-and-roll musicians, and he still gets to play with his long-time friend Marty Lee in Donnie Iris's band. In this episode of Bring the Pain, I reviewed both Monday night football games between the Ravens and the Buccaneers, as well as the game between the Cardinals and the Chargers. With injuries happening to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, a lot of us fantasy football players are shocked. Every year has a flow to it, and this year, you have to be a chameleon like Macho Man Randy Savage. No matter your team's record, your opponents most likely also have had the experience. That means your league is wide open, and we need to finish this next stretch strong. That means you'll need to get to Dr. Roto.com, so that we can help cure your teams with the right prescription. In the end, I reveal one of my IDP waiver wire targets for tomorrow that we'll help your team win now. So let's get ready to slay the competition once again this week. I call him by his pseudonym, Danny White, but he refers to himself in this episode simply as GOD. From the late 1970s through the 1980s, Danny Smith played in some of the most original and unique bands in Erie (e.g., X-Whites, Generic Beat, Wiggling Judies, Rub The Buddah). His antics onstage were legendary, and occasionally would end up with him wearing little or nothing by the end of a show. In this frenetic interview, I try to tame the wild man long enough for him to coherently tell me his story ... and it was worth it. Don't miss this one!P.S. It's Family Life's "Hometown Heroes" Celebrate the congregations and volunteers in our listening area who created a magical, memorable evening for hundreds of special guests The Night to Shine has become a global movement across the past decade, and numerous local churches are plugged in -- many of them since the early days when the Tim Tebow Foundation launched a prom-styled festival for special-needs individuals. In this edition of "Hometown Heroes", we hear about the local area's Night to Shine events held February 9, 2024. Representatives of three of these congregations tell us what happens, who is served, the significant responses of the families and the local community, and how this one night spurs churches to be attentive to special needs ministries throughout the year. Our radio news feature offers highlights and stories. For each of these three congregations, we also will be posting expanded interviews with web-only bonus content. Today, he plays in three bands: Acoustic Ear Candy, Jack Stevenson's Buried Treasure Band, and a duo with his wife Donna called Parker HD. Throughout the years, Harry's played in multiple country and rock bands, and his enthusiasm for music — and life! — is not only contagious, it's inspiring. He's gone from a little kid on his bike trying to sing with the older guys singing doo-wop songs around a street light in Wesleyville (where Harry grew up), to playing to a few thousand people at 8 Great Tuesdays in 2022. Lawrence Wright's newest novel, Mr. Texas, revolves around Texas politics and how they relate to our national political conversation, and he knows from where he speaks. Not only is he a native Texan, but he has also written one of the definitive NON fiction books about Texas, (God Save Texas). Both books are insightful, prescient, and, this might surprise you, very funny. Mr. Texas is about modern politics, the price of selling your soul, the importance of Texas politics, how to talk to each other, and whether or not one person can make a difference in this world. Our bookstore this week is Werner Books and Coffee in Erie PA. Dave McMillin is not from Erie originally, he's from Pittsburgh, and he now lives in Meadville. But he played plenty of gigs in Erie and all over the country in the 1970s and 80s with his band McMillin & Life, which is a spoof of the name of the old TV series "McMillan and Wife." He still plays today, and he has no plans of retiring. Thanks to the JPT Foundation for sponsoring the Erie Music History podcast. Joe Dorris played in Erie in the early 1970s in bands like Zeus and Antia. He would later play in the Dorris Brothers band for many years, spend some time playing in Boston (including a very funny gig at a bar ON a bar), and eventually would go onto play with Frank Singer in various jazz bands to this day. A lot of Erie music fans remember Jim Buman as the guitarist in the 70s rock band "Guardian" when he even used to wear a cape! But after injuring his arm in a skiing accident, it took him years to get back to playing again. But once he got better, he never stopped, and in recent years he's been in bands like Taylor Maid, Joe Rockhead, Hiway Starr, and his current band, Cherry Bomb. Before he was a "Dock Boy" or a full-time musician living in Florida playing almost every day of the week at some of the nicest resorts, Boyd Baker was a rocker! He's still a rocker at heart, and he talks about his high school band Polaris and other bands like playing in Dirty Looks in the early years! Dave Richards may not be a musician, but he did have a transformative effect on the Erie music scene for about 31 years. Of course, that effect came primarily through the words he wrote in the Erie newspaper about Erie musicians, but also it came from his unwavering support of the live music scene as his alter ego Dr. Rock.
