Expertise is everywhere. We've all gotten good at various things in our lives, but that level of understanding comes with a burden. We start to view things in a very specific, rigid way. A way that fits the narrative of our experience and knowledge thus far in life. We have trouble seeing things from a different perspective any longer. Today we deep dive into using the beginner's mind to engage in new things that literally put you in the position of a beginner. The truth is, if your mind is empty, it is ready for anything. There are many possibilities in the beginner's mind, but in the expert's, there are few. -Zen Master
It's not what you know, it's what you do! How many times a day do you convince yourself that you don't have time to do what you know you need to do? Maybe it's pre-packing your lunch, walking outside in nature, checking in with your partner, washing your face, or meditating. We are EXCUSE masters! Trust me when I say that every day I can find a million reasons not to get up at 5 am, work out, turn my screens off by sunset, and consume healthy, whole foods. Medical school is, in fact, drinking from a fire hose. Today I get personal with y'all as I share what's working for me during this hectic, beautiful time.
Have you ever thought about doing something and then convinced yourself you weren't "enough" for whatever that thing was? Maybe you wanted to be a race car driver or maybe you wanted to be a scientist and study off the coast of New Zealand with more plants than people or maybe you wanted to be a mother, but you thought you would never be as good as your friends. As humans, we get caught in this vicious cycle of talking ourselves out of chasing our dreams and living out our purpose because of the "I'm not good enough label." Listen, you're not wrong for questioning a life that was built on supposed tos but you do owe it to yourself to check in with your feelings. Ask yourself, How does this feel? How does my life feel? When you get brave enough to ask yourself, find power in the pause and....listen.
Do you like to cook or bake? Me too!! Well, if you are anything like me when you cook, you follow the recipe to a T, but when you bake, you pinch and throw ingredients in a bowl without any way to ever replicate the same recipe twice. The reality is, sometimes it is insanely delicious, and other times, well, maybe you hit up the local ice cream shop and give the cookies to the neighbor. Either way, the ingredients we put in vary depending on what we make, and the same goes for happiness. What you put in will change from season to season, but I can bet these THREE ingredients will stay with you forever.
There is this interesting thing humans do on a day-to-day basis. We run around like chickens with our heads cut off, thinking if we move quicker, we can get more things done, and maybe, just maybe, it'll feel like we gained more time in a day. We chase our "picture of the preferable future" in exchange for the abundance and joy of the present moment. Yet, we all know those people who wander down the same paths we do, seeking happiness in what they don't yet have, and well some of them didn't wake up today. Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment. While Chronos refers to chronological or sequential time, Kairos signifies a period or season, a moment of indeterminate time in which an event of significance happens. How are you measuring time in your life?
With the recent tragic loss of people near, far, young and old, I couldn't help but reflect on my life transitions over the last 33 years. What I have found is that everything starts with how you see it. When was the last time you did a handstand to gain a new perspective? We are stuck in what we tell ourselves, which is often far from the truth. Today we talk about returning to those prime ages of 17, 21, 25, and even 30. What did you say to that remarkable reflection in the mirror? How did breakups define you? Where did you find purpose and meaning? These are bold questions, and the answers to them do in fact, evolve as the years pass.
Today deadlines, finish lines, and goalposts are all things hindering and not helping you. You're overwhelmed. You aren't wrong about the pressure. Your boss, aunt, bus driver, and woman at the ticket kiosk: everyone would like you to go a bit quicker. But you can't paint the second coat first; you just can't. As humans, we love immediate gratification, but when you genuinely think about how your life has unfolded thus far, I can guarantee the best parts have come about with patience and not sacrificing quality for speed. Today we talk about how to slow down and realize whatever it is we desire is coming to us, but the time it takes for us to receive it depends on how we act while we are waiting.
According to the Theory of Needs by David McClelland, there are three main drivers of motivation, a need for achievement, a need for affiliation, and a need for power. Have you ever thought about why you do what you do? Whether it be going back to school, changing careers, starting a family, or traveling the world solo, deep down, you have a driving motivation. Maybe it's an impressive achievement, and you are outcome-focused, or maybe you genuinely want the experience of doing it and are curious about what you might learn from the process. Today we talk about driving motivators and how they influence your overall life satisfaction.
When was the last time you went to the beach? When was the last time you built a sandcastle at the beach? Maybe it was last week, but likely it was 10 years ago or more. This reference may initially seem irrelevant though I would tend to disagree as these handcrafted, fleeting creations have taught you life lessons since childhood. Today we deep dive into what it means to begin again while finding pure joy in the uprooting. How you flow from one situation to the next says everything about if you were the kid that cried as the waves crashed over your masterpiece or watched as you quickly were dealt a clean slate to begin again. Like a sandcastle, all is temporary. Build It, Tend it, Enjoy it + Let It Go.
We often tell ourselves if we make more money, we will be happier; if we fit into size 2 jeans, we will feel more beautiful; if we ignore burnout and try to be everything to everyone, we will receive more recognition. Speaking from experience, all of these beliefs are lies we tell ourselves to avoid facing what is uncomfortable in our current reality. In actuality, when we make more money, we spend it. When we starve ourselves and yo-yo diet, we feel like a failure as the weight creeps back on (because it will). When we try to be superhuman, it is incredibly short-lived, so we shut down, shame ourselves, and relive the same day repeatedly. Today I am going to get real with y'all as I deep dive into HOW I healthily lost 10 pounds after being STUCK for 2 years!! There is no magic potion but let me tell you there is a way to lose weight and keep it off.
Holy shit, this year of life brought me an insurmountable amount of joy. It turns out that trusting your gut instincts, regular meditation, working less, and traveling more will bring you all the health, healing, and happiness in the world. In one year, I manifested buying my first home, backpacking Europe, meeting my person, gaining clarity on my doctorate program, and SO MUCH MORE! On today's episode, I go back to each month of year 32 via the pictures I have taken, and I am in awe of what I accomplished this year. My hope is that this episode inspires you to work hard, rest harder, and fully trust in what you cannot yet see.
Karma means action. Physics shows that for every action, there must be an equal and opposite reaction. Depending on your previous actions, this could create wholehearted happiness or immense suffering. Whatever happens, is the result of Karma being released, which, no matter how you view the situation, is a good thing and an opportunity for future growth. Today we deep dive into releasing your karma and making conscious choices. I am here to share with you that running to a new state or swiping on dating apps will not lead to a change in your karmic energy. Vibrate higher, attract what you put out, and let go of what no longer serves you.
Have you ever asked yourself why is this happening TO me? Often this is our first reaction when something unpredictable manifests in our lives. What if we rephrased this in the slightest but most transformative way to say, why is this happening FOR me? I have said time and time again that nothing in our lives is an accident; no matter how difficult, magnificent, or strange it may seem, it is meant FOR you. With that said, our unique gifts used for the good and growth of others often come through circumstance. My health conditions have opened a door for me to become a doctor. My infertility has amplified my compassion for those crying in my ultrasound room. Being fired not once but twice led me to become a badass entrepreneur who will never work a 9-5 corporate job again. What outstanding talents are you keeping from the world in an effort to not accept your current circumstances?
How you slow down, how you keep things simple, and who you surround yourself with is the true definition of a life well lived. Today I have the pleasure of sharing the mic with Alexa Helman, a kick-ass, truly authentic young lady whom I met just a few months ago through Toastmasters. Her energy, vulnerability, and free spirit are contagious. Our conversation today is real and raw, speaking about how to love ourselves more, how to follow unconventional paths and the power of being a lifelong learner.
"Whenever you know what is lacking, you know more clearly what it is that you desire. In other words, in the midst of sickness, your desire for wellness is always clearly amplified." There are countless moments in our lives when we just don't know what to do. Typically, we obsess over finding answers and regaining control without regard to our vibrational alignment. The truth is we must ask questions and then step away to leave space to receive the answers. In doing so, we stop resisting life and start allowing it. This is anything but easy, but it is every part worth it.
Risk is ubiquitous (found everywhere) in daily life. People weigh the costs and benefits of important life decisions involving medical treatments, financial investments, leisure time activities, and life partners. What I have found is that calculated risks always win. In dropping expectations, we release control, and we let go of what makes us so-called "successes or failures" in life. The art of risk-taking is built upon time, consistency, and failure. Fail forward. Just like leg day in the gym, it's going to suck, but damn, is it ever worth it. Today we discuss 5 practices to improve your risk taking muscle. Let go of where you think you should be and embrace what you cannot yet see. Life is ALWAYS happening for you!
What better time to learn and incorporate new techniques for improving mental health and healing the body than May, Mental Health awareness month? It seems farfetched to think the colors around you directly affect how you learn or your energy levels, but they do. Color is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, a wavelength of energy, so it should be no surprise that it has wide-ranging effects on living things. In fact, certain colors stimulate or irritate body systems, such as the nervous, circulatory, and digestive systems. Today we deep dive into how to COLOR your world a bit more and how to implement color therapy into your life today.
You all are in for a sweet treat! Today I got the pleasure of having a morning coffee chat with one of the most kind and genuine humans I have ever known. Jenna and I met back at UFC in 2019, where I had the pleasure of coaching her toward the "big booty goals" while simultaneously learning about what makes her who she is. Fast forward over 4 years later, and she has become a close friend, sidekick entrepreneur, and beautiful light in my life. On today's episode, we deep dive into corporate life and how it's "their time, not your time." We also get real about how scary it is to believe in what you cannot yet see and how losing people in your life hurts terribly, but there truly is a rainbow on the other side of the rain. EVEN BETTER, she is running a huge coaching special for a limited time only, so stick with us until the end to hear all those details!
A "flexitarian" describes someone who eats mostly plant-based foods but occasionally eats meat, poultry, and fish. Vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or carnivore, no matter what group you fall into, it's imperative that we remember nothing extreme will last forever. Whether it's running marathons, bodybuilding, or avoiding any food that came from an animal, we eventually find ourselves going down a slippery slope of, "I can't live like this forever." Our bodies want homeostasis and neutrality, not current fads or yo-yo-ing from one extreme to the next. Today we deep dive into how your choices affect not only your mind and your body but also the environment. Take everything you read/hear with a grain of salt because as much as there are statistics, there are also an equal amount of opinions. In taking a holistic approach to our diets, we can become more aware of what makes us feel good and what makes the world a healthier place to live.
For the majority of my 20's and early 30's, I had unexplained weight gain, reproductive issues, poor digestion, chronic fatigue, and impaired memory. I thought, WOW, getting old sucks!! Boy, I was so wrong. This is prime time, baby, there is no way I should have low libido with chronic diarrhea and burps that smell like rotten eggs. My body was sending me signals that were easy to ignore until they weren't. In these past 2 years, on top of the symptoms I already mentioned, I have had severe neurological symptoms, including brain fog and memory loss. Now that is SCARY! If I didn't lay down to nap at 1 pm daily, I legit couldn't even hold my head up to function no matter how hard I tried. All the conventional doctors told me, "Your labs are within normal limits we don't know why you feel so bad." Cool, I will just let it go then. HELL NO!! Today we deep dive into why we are all so sick. Heavy metal testing is not a routinely ordered exam, and if you don't know to ask for it, you will end up living your life extremely miserable. Please listen up, speak up for yourself, and don't let anyone tell you things are "fine" when you know they are far from it.
The silent treatment, defensiveness, criticism, and meanness are all great ways to end your relationship. Often we avoid difficult and uncomfortable conversations in exchange for attacking someone's character, mocking them, or ignoring them altogether. These are all great ways to block the flow of love and stay in an endless cycle of unhealthy debate. Today we deep dive into your fight style and how we can change the only thing we've ever known. You deserve the utmost respect and happiness in your relationships, and this begins and ends with how you fight.
Quitting has a bad reputation. When we think of this word, we typically think of things like giving up and failing. But what if I told you it took courage to quit? What if I told you it took a certain level of confidence to admit something wasn't working and it was time to move on? What if I told you quitting was for winners? Today we talk about the top 3 reasons most people are afraid to quit and what would happen if they did. The truth is I have quit many things in my life, and the magic of letting go and diving head first into the unknown is something I wish for all of you.
We tend to complicate decision-making when conflicting seeds of information are bounced around in our heads. Stay in your body, feel what is right, and avoid ruminating about any advice that does not match your purpose. Today I discuss trusting others less and trusting ourselves more. To be completely honest with you, this week had me feeling some sort of negative way about people. I want you to live authentically and build courage through the complexity. You have everything you need already within you.
While you are being treated or waiting for it to pass, you have to keep fighting. The diagnosis of depression is as complex as the illness itself. The truth is 3% of Americans, some 19 million, suffer from chronic depression, and more than 2 million of those are children. In all honesty, I had no idea how many people were struggling with something many people do not take seriously. Upon educating myself I felt called to speak to you about what I have learned thus far. Today we deep dive into what depression looks like, what therapy options are available, and how to be our own best advocate when something "just isn't right." I love you; you deserve to feel amazing and live your best life.
Are you out there chasing the "bad boys" or the "bad girls" because catching them is a perpetually unattainable goal? In all reality, what would you do with them anyway? We have normalized the thrill of the chase instead of focusing on attracting genuinely good people who challenge us in healthy ways. I will be the first to admit that I am guilty of this. I only recently realized that the men I was manifesting into my life were depressed, unhappy, and reliant on me. This was no fault of theirs but my own need to feel wanted and needed. This chase led to unhealthy fights, utter boredom, and apoplectic (furious) demeanors. Today I deep dive into love being a good fight and how our interactions should have a 20:1 ratio of positivity to negativity.
It turns out breakdowns make us human. For some of you, this may seem like common sense, but for others, you may feel so alone when life gets heavy, and happiness seems out of reach. It's in these trying times that we rely heavily on believing we will never have enough or we will never be enough. This is no fault of your own, but of the society we live in that constantly reminds us "there is more." Today we talk about how your mindset is holding you back from your highest potential and what you can do to change that!
What will people think?! True confidence means you don't feel the need to explain yourself to others. Maybe you decided to have children without getting married, or you stopped eating meat and became a vegetarian, or you started training to become to world's strongest woman. First off, GO YOU! Secondly, you shouldn't ever feel the need to justify your decisions. What it really boils down to is this, courage is something you choose and confidence is something you earn. Confidence is the outcome of taking a courageous leap, it's what courage becomes, once you have enough proof and experience.

We all know those people who have 5,782 unread emails highlighted with a bright red notification, am I right? Or maybe, you are that person. Often, our emails look a lot like our emotional inboxes where we are overflowing with feelings we have decided would be safer pushed far down instead of honestly working through them. We carry these situations, emotions, and hurt from one relationship to the next expecting it to somehow be "different" this time. Newsflash** your shit follows you. Today we deep dive into feeling your feelings, releasing emotions, and loosening your grip on how you think you should be feeling.
Today I want you to ask yourself: Does my "symptom" have a role, function, purpose, or intention? Now, this can feel like a loaded question depending on the context but it can apply vastly to the way we feel about ourselves daily. In light of my current situation, we are going to deep dive into how my "symptoms" served a purpose and how this was one of the few times I actually listened to what they were telling me.
Have you ever played private investigator for no reason hoping to find nothing? Maybe you looked at his phone, checked his email, surprised him at work, or showed up unexpectedly at the gym. It was innocent of you to just "look" or "show up" right? WRONG. You will always find what you are looking for. Maybe you suspect he's meeting up with someone after work so you turn on his location, or you think he is in contact with his ex so you casually go through his emails. I get it, but what life continues to gift me every single time I fall into this trap is that I find exactly what I don't want to find. It hurts, it sucks, and I don't want this for you. Today we deep dive into why we become so curious that it turns into suspicion and what to do if we find ourselves going down this rabbit hole repeatedly.
All courage is fear, said with prayers. My heart has been torn for months now about my calling to go to Nigeria and serve. A medical mission is something I have been wanting to do for years. Yet the opportunity presented itself during election time in Africa when crime and violence are at their peak. Is it safe? Is it smart? What is a proof of life plan? Is this how it's supposed to be? As much as I have prayed, the answers are still very unclear. By the time you hear this I will be on a 25-hour plane ride across the world and to be honest there is nothing certain about this trip. Today I am open and honest with you about what is going on in my heart and in my head, plus the obscene amount of vaccinations I had to get. Let's not leave out the "escape and proof of life plan," along with what's in my suitcase. I believe all of our fears and limitations dissolve in knowing that whatever happens, we are going to be okay.
60-hour work weeks, entrepreneurship, clients, patients, relationships, you name it, I was available for it. Do you know where that got me, BURNT OUT and SICK. Today I deep dive into 7 ways you can be more "unavailable" for what doesn't deserve your attention, plus ways to be "available" for what does. It is eye-opening to see how we spend our time and at the same time how we waste it.
All my life I have labeled myself. Shauna the sonographer, Shauna the wife, Shauna the bodybuilder, Shauna the personal trainer... you get it. What I found was when those labels were stripped from me, I lost a part of me every single time. Now, how tightly I identified with those labels directly correlated to how long it took me to "recover" and redefine myself. Today we deep dive into attachments, certainty, and loosening the labels in order to enhance our potential.
What the hell happened!?! I woke up and I'm fat. If you haven't been there before then you likely have yet to hit age 40 or have hormone imbalances. You know the frustration when you eat the same foods, train with the same intensity and keep stress levels stable yet you walk by the mirror and want to throw up? That day you toss the jeans and accept the inevitable (stretchy pants for life). Then you toss the chocolate and grab the sugar-free gum. Listen, aging is inevitable but belly fat gain is not. Today we deep dive into how your fat changes as you age, what you should be eating, and how you should be training to focus on fat loss instead of weight loss.
We participate in an endless cycle of diets where we try to control rather than honor our inner desires and appetites. We try to sculpt our female bodies so they are more linear and angular, less round and curvaceous. Ironically, we do this in our friendships as well. We hyper-focus on likes, comments, and DMS rather than hour-long cafe conversations with a new friend. Friends are truly the medicine of life and if we don't abuse the prescription we won't rely on anyone for validation or happiness outside of ourselves. Make a conscious effort to be a good friend and attract good friends. You deserve to be uplifted and challenged in the best ways possible.
If you've listened to me for a while, you know I spend my life teaching and learning how to navigate change. I deep dive into the unknown head first with one plan; everything is workable because life will always figure itself out. Building a life around being uncomfortable is what 99% of people actually avoid doing. Most of us chase comfortability, affirmations, and sameness which follow with regrets and "should haves." The life you live is the lessons you teach, so after years of falling face first, I developed a 4 step blueprint for navigating any change in your life. Divorce, career, mindset, fitness, travel, you name it, it applies! It's finally time for that holistic life audit, sunshine.
From clean bidet butts to 12 hours on a flight together watching people do aerobics, we've got you covered on humor and advice for visiting Japan and traveling as a new couple. Public speaking isn't everyone's jam, okay let's be honest, 99% of us would rather get an electric shock than speak; so today I am extra grateful that Cam sat down behind the mic with me to tell you his side of the story. I mean if it's going to be a good story it has to have two sides, am I right? Today we deep dive into packing, living together, hotel hopping, speaking Japanese, tattoos, train etiquette, bidets and so much more! Listen up and then go book the ticket.
“And if travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it's a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity, and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.” Today we chat about what to do before moving in together, why you shouldn't move in together, what to expect while living together, and all the details about my current living situation! There is never a dull moment with Shauna :)
We all know the saying "secrets don't make friends," am I right? Well, secrets also diminish our own well-being and quality of life. We fear judgment at the expense of being honest and this stress of holding something inside us chips away at our health, our relationships, and our happiness. Today we talk about not feeling guilty, embarrassed, or anxious about our secrets. Honesty is truly the best policy and a way to lighten the load on your heart for good.
A book launch in the USA while in another country, yeah that shit is complicated with a 16-hour time change! But you know me, I like to do hard things. I am SO grateful for the love and support that I decided to give my new book away for FREE but only until March 20th. Even more life-changing was my trip to Japan. I have an exciting episode coming for y'all with my boo but today you get all the nitty gritty from me in my still sleep-deprived state.
I started crying today. Crying because transitions are SCARY AF and when you pray for clarity and get deafening silence, it's even scarier. As most of you know I find much joy in showing up in life authentically Shauna, but sometimes, things like money, my childhood, and what I should be doing versus what I am doing creep in and cripple me. In the last 3 weeks, I have spent $6K, yes $6k when I don't have a 9-5 job, and well let's be honest I don't have health insurance either. Today I am completely transparent with you about my current struggles but also honest in how I am choosing to not fall back into old, comfortable habits.
Experience > Things. When is the last time you went on a trip and only packed what you needed? Often we pack our lives and our hearts with the "WHAT IFS!" I'm talking about the raincoat "in case it rains," the hiking boots "in case you go hiking," the fourteen bathing suits "in case you get stranded on the island for an extra two weeks!" We spend so much time carrying around things that we don't need that life just feels heavy and uncomfortable. Not just physical things either, but more so, emotional things. Today we deep dive into letting go of the past, releasing built up emotions that are no longer serving you, and navigating how to "lighten the load" physically and emotionally. I love you, please trust me when I say, you need to hear this one.
