Something Wicked #8: Burke and Hare

In this week's bonus episode, Martin talks us through the ghastly crimes of Burke and Hare - with a side serving of the history of medicine!Part of the "Something Wicked" series, we start by chatting through the headlines of the Burke and Hare killing spree, including the Enlightenment-era craze for celebrity surgeons and 'anatomisation.' We then discuss how Scotland's fraught religious history enabled leaps forward in natural philosophy, necessitated the invention of things like 'mort safes,' and how ideas like Humorism and Sensibility had their roots in Ancient Mesopotamian and Ancient Egyptian concepts like 'Flow Theory,' curses, and exorcism. After chatting through Ancient Greek and Roman developments in medicine, including the Hippocratic Oath, and Medieval concepts like Leechbooks, we then loop back to the popularity of "operating theatres" - places where surgeries were performed for paying customers - and how the profit motive drove demand for corpses. Ideally ones that were still warm. And why this, in turn, inspired Burke, Hare, and the surgeon Robert Knox, to make some ghastly leaps in logic, the consequences of which were still being felt well into the 20th century...The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. E2 | Your Presence Is Your Purpose with Debb Latwat This week we had the opportunity to speak to Debb, who feels a little lost. She longs for purpose and meaning, mostly in her work, but no matter what she does, something is still missing. Sound familiar? She wonders why she's here, what she's meant to do, and why nothing seems to light her up the way it used to. Feeling trapped in a routine she doesn't love and wrestling with her own overwhelming expectations of what she should be doing with her life, she overlooks the treasure nestled deep within her - the gift of her presence. Many of us struggle to see the value in the gifts that come so naturally to us. They are the things we do effortlessly and with grace, winning the respect and admiration of others, often without ever knowing it. We assume what comes so naturally to us comes just as easily to others. But it doesn't. Who you are and the way you show up impacts people, but first, it impacts you. What stories are you telling yourself about who you are? Are those stories true? In this episode, I have a unique perspective because Debb is a friend of mine. I know that everywhere she goes, she shines bright. She seems unaware of this when I first mention it but then begins to see that she's overcomplicating things. She doesn't need to change the world with some life-altering invention or as a famous photographer for National Geographic. She's already making waves, changing lives, and leaving her mark, just by being Debb. Debb's story is your story, and your impact is just as magnificent as hers. As you listen, I hope you're able to see yourself through the eyes of the people you touch every day. You have immense power to change your life and impact others - simply with your presence. Full Show Notes ⏭️ Listen to E15 | Your Presence Is Your Purpose with Debb Latwat: The Follow-up The episode at a glance... [1:10] Debb talks about her struggle to find purpose after the pandemic forced her out of a job she had held for decades, a job that had become part of her identity. She finds herself wondering, "What am I meant to do? What lasting legacy can I leave for the world?" [3:45] Ron explores what things Debb does right now that she finds fulfilling and meaningful. She talks about the frustration of not having enough time to do all the things that bring her joy and the discovery that, even with more time, something is still missing. [5:00] Ron asks Debb about her dreams as a child. What did she want to do with her life? [7:00] Debb talks about missing the adventurous person she used to be. [8:20] Ron suggests experimenting by trying something she would consider adventurous to find out if it's as enjoyable as it used to be. [9:30] Debb talks about feeling stuck in everyday routines, which makes her feel unhappy, unmotivated, and depressed. [10:28] Ron suggests trying different things to find out what ignites her. What are her passions? [11:50] Ron talks about the difference between listening to your head and listening to your heart. Dreaming without limits to reconnect with your purpose. [13:50] Ron suggests assessing what you're already good at and how to use those skills to do something you're passionate about. "Let your heart talk to you about your dreams instead of your head talking to you about your limitations." [14:55] Debb talks about past jobs that she felt really passionate about and what specifically she loved about them. [16:15] Ron suggests that we are attracted to things that align with our purpose. This is why it's so important to explore your passions and not allow your head to dismiss your dreams. [17:05] Janelle asks if Debb's lack of fulfillment is related to a job or does it go deeper than that. [18:53] Ron talks about Flow Theory, being in the zone. This is when you reach the intersection of your abilities and the difficulty of the task. [20:00] Debb talks about losing all sense of time and space in her garden, but otherwise, she feels discouraged that she doesn't have a "thing" that she can get totally consumed by. [21:35] Ron talks about the creative and visionary process that is so important for realizing and following your dreams. "Your mind doesn't think in words, it thinks in pictures." [21:52] Ron talks about the power of vision boards to lay out the specifics of your dreams. If you can't visualize it, you won't take action. The creative process: You see something that you want to create and are in the process of creating it. If you can't see it, it's not likely to happen. "When you dream it, even if it seems impossible, things start to happen to bring the dream to fruition." [25:50] Just as important as what you want to see is what you're currently seeing. Are you seeing yourself complacent? Whatever you're visualizing is what you'll continue to create. Change the picture! [26:50] Janelle asks Debb what she's hoping to accomplish in order to feel enough. Debb talks about wanting to change the world in a noticeable way. [29:05] Janelle talks about the difference between measurable and tangible things we can present to the world as our contribution versus the gift of our presence. We don't always know our impact, and maybe we aren't supposed to. Janelle talks about the presence Debb brings into everything she does: Debb shows up as Debb, and that is her purpose. [31:30] Janelle asks Ron if finding purpose in multiple things is possible rather than in just one thing you do well. Ron talks about being a human doing for most of his life, showing measurable proof of progress, which is all related to ego. [34:10] Ron talks about the shift in thinking required to go from doing to being. [35:00] Janelle talks about the radiance of Debb's personality because of her intense presence and how that impacts and inspires people in ways she may never know. "People will forget what you say, they'll forget what you do, but they'll never forget how you made them feel." [36:55] Debb talks about how much she enjoys brightening people's day and how she intentionally works towards that. [37:55] Janelle asks Debb to try a little experiment: preparing the gift of herself as she gets ready for work. "You, Debb, the human being, are the gift." [39:06] Debb talks about having a purpose for the day instead of a legacy or something tangible. [39:30] Ron emphasizes the importance of collecting the data when you do an experiment. What feels different? What's the impact? "The doing is not what brings the fulfillment, it's the being that brings fulfillment." [41:10] Debb talks about how she's feeling about the discussion. Flow Theory |  The concept of "flow" is a mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed and is so involved in the activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience is so enjoyable that people will continue to do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it. Flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what the person is doing that they even lose their sense of time.

In this week's pod, we welcomed Dr Alan Barnard to discuss the theory of constraints & decision-making. Dr. Alan Barnard is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, strategy advisor, research scientist, app developer, author, coach, lecturer, podcaster, and lifelong learner. Alan is considered one of the world's leading Decision Scientists and Theory of Constraints experts. Alan is the CEO of Goldratt Research Labs, which he co-founded in 2009 with Dr. Eli Goldratt, author of THE GOAL, creator of Theory of Constraints and Critical Chain Project Management. Dr. Alan's research focuses on understanding why good people make, and often repeat bad decisions, and how best to avoid these. From this research, Alan and his team at Goldratt Research Labs have developed a range of award-winning Decision Support Apps that help organizations and individuals make better faster decisions when it really matters. Their clients include Fortune 500 companies, Government Agencies, and people from over 70 countries that are using their apps to make difficult life and business decisions. The main topics we discussed on the podcast were as follows: There is a massive amount of invisible simplicity on major projects How do you decide on a goal if you do not know what resources will limit you reaching that goal? Many people become successful due to factors outside their control such as luck and good genes, however almost all successful people make good decision and are hard working, which is in their control To create a stable system, have a single constraint that doesn't move Projects are always looking for the inherent but invisible simplicity. Critical path methodology enabled projects to simplify how they represent project delivery, however this usually ignores resource and capacity constraints Many people are better at estimating work durations in big chunks rather than at a lower level / individual task based detail Hard to quantify capacity, availability and capability of resources in a project plan. The easiest thing to track is whether a project is waiting for resource The main planning mistake is to ignore capacity when making commitments and launch too many projects at the same time AI is better suited to production environments where there is repetitive information A key skill of a manager is the ability to keep the team “in flow” Here are links to some of the topics we discussed: Flow Theory: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/psychology/flow-theory Impossible Unless: https://www.impossibleunless.com/special-copy-registration Project Portfolio Digital Twin: https://www.projectdigitaltwin.com/sale1648625245366 Goldratt Research Labs: www.goldrattresearchlabs.com Harmony Apps: https://harmonyapps.com/ Dr Alan Barnard Website: www.dralanbarnard.com Critical Chain - Eliyahu Goldratt: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Critical-Chain-Business-Eliyahu-Goldratt/dp/0566080389 How to Improve Work Flow in any Environment - keynote by Dr. Alan Barnard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AkrjO55VBQ&feature=youtu.be Join us next week when we speak to Paul Waskett to discuss Project Controls in design and engineering stages For more information, blogs or to support our charities visit www.projectchatterpodcast.com If you'd like to sponsor the podcast get in touch via our website. LENR occurs when special circumstances exist causing the electromagnetic and weak nuclear reaction break down. The flow bond model between quarks makes more sense. If the quark twister pump configurations change than the flow charges change and the structure of the atom changes because a proton becomes a neutron. For a neutron to become a proton, one of the up quarks must become a down quark. How would this happen? We have to look at the mechanical forces creating the electromagetic field according to flow theory. According to flow theory, the concept of the electron is replaced with the flow theory of the twister flow. Electrical and magnetic fields are created by oscillations of the twister flow. The oscillation between the blaring particles in the twister flow collide with the free bolgarinos around the atom. The free bolgarinos particles surrounding the twister flow begin to vibrate at the same frequency of the twister flow. The vibrations dampen intensity over distance, square of the distance decreases in intensity. The electro magnetic forces are created by synchronized oscillations of the twister flows. The weakening of the electromagnetic field is the result of a disruption in the oscillations within the nano meter distance. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/david-nishimoto/message

Josh, Pat, Stoy and Ed from the Boss Rush Games Network sit down to talk about Flow Theory in video games; which is described as a state of immersion that can trigger immense feelings of euphoria and intrinsic reward. It is often reached when you play a game that requires a high amount of skill, and is immensely challenging. Often times you can lose your sense of time and memory when you enter into this state, and we talk about what games get us into this state, and how one can achieve this "flow state."  You can follow Ed on Twitter.  References: Flow and Immersion In Video Games, Flow Theory Applied to Game Design.  Thanks for listening! Austroads has recently completed a project to review and propose improvements to the guidance on interrupted traffic flow theory contained within the Austroads Guide to Traffic Management (AGTM), Part 2 and Part 3. The updates will broaden practitioners' understanding of interrupted traffic flow theory and enable them to manage congestion on road networks more effectively. This webinar, presented by Mark Plattz and Emily Plath, will equip practitioners with the knowledge of the existing topics and emerging best practice in the assessment of simple and complex traffic scenarios in an Australasian context. Presenters outline the work undertaken during the project and detail the proposed changes to Part 2 and Part 3 of the Guide to Traffic Management. The key areas that have been identified for development in AGTM Part 2 and Part 3 include bottlenecks, travel time reliability, roundabout theory, analysis of signalised intersections, active transportation and demand management, multi-modal considerations and traffic flow impacts of heavy vehicles.

Brock and I met several years ago at Wildman Adventure Resort in Wisconsin, where we were both introduced to seasonal work in the Outdoor Industry! In our conversation we touch on deviating from your “original plan”, the viability of working seasonally as a career, a hard lesson taught by a roaring river, and the importance of getting children outdoors. Brock tells us sometimes we need to “embrace the suck” and roll with the punches so that we can help make even one person's life better.
