Send us a textNARRATOR:The Night Watchman rises from his desk and follows the sound—past the exhibits, past the quiet corridors, toward the patio doors.Outside, the winter air holds that New Year's feeling: cold, sharp, expectant. And inside the museum… something is celebrating like it has a permit.SFX: Door latch. Soft squeak. Patio door opens.SCENE 1 — THE PATIO REVEALSFX: Outdoor patio ambience: faint wind; distant city fireworks; then—very close—party pops, tiny whistles, and toy-sized cheering.NIGHT WATCHMAN (stunned):Oh.Oh, no.NARRATOR:The Watchman steps onto the patio and sees it: toys everywhere, arranged like a gala. A “stage” made from stacked display risers. A “VIP area” behind a velvet rope they have somehow… acquired. And at the center: a very earnest planning committee.BARBIE (bright, authoritative):Okay! Everyone! Remember: we are doing this with taste.KEN (trying to sound official):Taste. With… also excitement. Tasteful excitement.SLINKY (bouncy, nervous):Taste is good! Taste is safe! Taste does not summon the fire department!ETCH A SKETCH (grand, French-leaning, dramatic):Non, non, non—taste is not enough! We require… symmetry. We require… balance. We require… a finale that is like… how you say… a ballet of the stars.RUBIK'S CUBE (dry):A ballet of the stars. On a patio. In December.FURBY (1998-ish, with a little furbish sparkle):Doo-ay! Tee-kah! PARTY-PAHTY!NIGHT WATCHMAN (calling out):Okay—okay—everybody freeze.SFX: A chorus of little “Eep!” “Oh!” “Gasp!” A springy boing.NIGHT WATCHMAN (trying to sound calm):What… is going on out here?BARBIE (as if this is obvious):It's New Year's Eve.NIGHT WATCHMAN:Yes. I'm aware. I have a calendar. A very judgmental calendar.KEN:We're doing a midnight celebration.Support the showThank you for experiencing Celebrate Creativity.

In the 1950s, caller Joy’s dad painted the ceiling of her bedroom navy blue, covered it in glowing stars, and gifted her a telescope! Thousands flock to Downey for the annual masa pilgrimage at the Amapola Market!  Another listener recalls his favorite gift as a kid, a BB gun. However, he accidentally shot a bird and felt so bad, to this day he has never picked up a gun, BB or otherwise. Meanwhile Andy and Rahner talk traumatic haircuts from their past and being dumped by their barber! Andy plays listener talkbacks from people who recall their favorite Christmas gifts when they were kids.  One caller said we mustn’t encourage greed, which Rahner refers to as toy shaming. Media was so much cooler back in the midcentury. In 1996, what was the hottest Christmas gift? Of course it was Tickle Me Elmo! Others that followed include Buzz Lightyear, Tamagotchi, Furbies, Beanie Babies and Bratz Dolls. And now we have the Labubu. Andy rounds out the show by chatting with a GI Joe collector.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

with each holiday season, there's typically one or two highly coveted items that set up a frenzy amongst consumers, the-must-have-gift-of-the-year, if you will. The Furby. Nintendo Switch. For the well heeled and easily influence by marketing amongst us, perhaps the Peloton.  In 2025, however, the can't-miss gift is unquestionably the 7 DVD box set, “Dr. Gene Scott 95th Birthday Commemorative Edition : The Spiritual Nitro Pills” Currently marked down from $139.99 to a mere $59.99, this exhaustive (and exhausting) collection will delight viewers young and old (provided they have 25 hours to spare).  I don't have 25 hours to spare (and I've heard enough bands with two drummers already, if you know what I mean) Instead, on this week's program we're going to tackle the age-old question, what if Werner Herzog's “God's Angry Man” (1981) had instead been called “God's Hangry Man”. Provided, y'know, you have two hours to spare.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the show kicks off in the best kind of chaos as Rick, Ariel, David, and Ripley dive straight into the bizarre world of Casio's new AI-powered pet, the Moflin, a furry robot companion that sparks a hilariously unhinged debate about whether Casio has gone too far or stumbled into genius-level diversification. Between jokes about Furbies, USB charging ports, and data-collecting guinea pigs, the crew manages to make sense of it all before officially starting the show and shifting into Ariel's latest editorial on the evolution of in-person watch events. From Windup to Watches and Wonders, they explore how shows since the beginning of the pandemic have reshaped the way brands connect with collectors, whether there are too many of them, and how smaller gatherings create opportunities for more meaningful conversations. Ripley's rant of the week follows with a deep dive into a watch that mistakenly called itself an annual calendar when it was actually a complete calendar, prompting a Watchmaking 101 lesson about the differences among complete, annual, and perpetual calendars, delivered with just enough watch-nerdy humor to make it stick. As things wind down, the team debates who is more obsessed with the moon, NASA or Omega, and somehow ends up joking about Bond watches, space marketing, and Panerai's habit of rewriting its own history. From AI guinea pigs to calendar complications, this episode captures the chaos, curiosity, and wit that make aBlogtoWatch Weekly a must-listen for anyone who loves watches, good stories, and a little bit of absurdity along the way.[00:00] Weekly Banter: The show begins with a discussion about YouTuber Nico Leonard's partnership with CIGA Design.[04:08] Casio's New Product: The hosts talk about the "Casio Moflin," a furry, AI-powered "smart companion."[12:18] The State of Watch Shows: Ariel discusses an article he wrote about the evolution, challenges, and opportunities of consumer-facing watch events post-pandemic.[29:46] Rant: Haim Annum Watch: Ripley Sellers expresses his disappointment with the new Haim Annum watch, which was marketed as an annual calendar but is actually a complete calendar.[37:40] Watches 101: Calendar Types: Following the rant, the hosts explain the differences between various watch calendar complications:[38:12] Perpetual Calendar: Accounts for months and leap years[38:40] Annual Calendar: Accounts for different month lengths but needs to be reset at the end of February .[39:59] Complete/Triple Calendar: Displays the day, date, and month but needs to be manually adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days.[44:30] Brand Discussion: Omega vs. NASA: The hosts debate the question, "Who cares about the moon the most, NASA or Omega?"[57:28] Horror Movies as Watch Brands: The "Watch You Like" segment returns, matching horror films to watch brands:[59:40] The Thing: Bremont [01:01:34] A Nightmare on Elm Street: Tiso PRX (for hair pulling) or Daniel Wellington (for buyer's remorse) [01:05:32] Gremlins: A Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, due to its complexity and rules (don't get it wet, don't set it after midnight) .[01:05:41] Next Week's Challenge: In honor of Jay Leno's Scottish heritage, the hosts will match watch brands to sweets from the Scottish company Golden Casket.[01:10:20] Hit, Miss, or Maybe (Part 1): The hosts review the Chopard Mille Miglia GTS Power Control.[01:15:22] Hit, Miss, or Maybe (Part 2): The final watch reviewed is the Ball Roadmaster M Model A, a mechanical alarm watch, which receives a "Hit," a "Miss," and a "Maybe"** YouTube Monetization ID for Copyright Material From PremiumBeat.com: #3826449

Lou Furby on MenoTalk - how Specsavers walk the talk in menopause support

Middling Along

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 29, 2025 38:05

In this episode I chat to Lou Furby, Specsavers' UK D&I lead, who shares how Specsavers built a workplace menopause support program from the ground up. We cover the creation of MenoTalk, the importance of inclusive, cross-functional involvement, the role of top-down sponsorship and allyship, practical strategies for creating a supportive workplace culture around menopause, and how to sustain momentum with education, language, and data. Packed with actionable tips for anyone aiming to start or grow a menopause-focused employee resource or wellbeing initiative. Key quotes “Don't try and do it all on your own. Get the right stakeholders involved. Have a steering group, a co-chair, and a sponsor.” “Pick off the low hanging fruit. Pick off the stuff that you can do and implement quickly.” “It's a war, not a battle.” (on sustaining momentum and not letting initiatives stall) “Education and information was absolutely key.” (on the foundation for successful engagement) “Language matters. Be direct and transparent about what menopause is.” (on avoiding euphemisms and building credibility) “We can't mandate everything in a joint venture, so we rely on leadership visibility and storytelling to drive engagement.” Practical takeaways for HR & wellbeing teams: Start with a steering group: bring cross-functional representation (HR/ER, facilities, IT, wellbeing/D&I) and appoint a co-chair to share the load. Secure an advocate sponsor: a trusted, visible leader in the business to champion the initiative. Listen first: let people's needs drive the program; avoid overloading participants with campaigns before trust is built. Use language that's clear and factual: don't shy away from the terminology of menopause and related symptoms. Connect with external expertise: partner with specialists to provide credible education and resources.  Implement quick wins: pick “low hanging fruit” that deliver tangible benefits.  Align with broader wellbeing and D&I goals: link the initiative to accreditation (Wellbeing of Women Workplace pledge) and overall staff welfare programs. Consider store-level realities: in retail, tailor adjustments to individual roles (e.g., door duty vs. back office) and support teams accordingly. Support managers with tools and training: give managers a framework for having compassionate, validating conversations. Provide holistic support: combine access to private care, wellbeing apps (Headspace), and flexible adjustments to support employees. Three actionable next steps you can take Create a cross-functional steering group and appoint a co-chair and a sponsor to lead a menopause initiative in your organization. Sign up for the Wellbeing of Women Workplace pledge and plan an introductory menopause education session with an external expert. Start a candid conversation with your HR/ER team about how to support line managers in having empathetic, validated conversations about menopause with their teams; aim to roll out basic manager training.   Resources: Connect with Lou over on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lou-furby-49290844/ For menopause training and awareness sessions: www.managingthemenopause.com   If you enjoy the podcast please help us grow by sharing this episode, or writing a review. This fall, three standout titles offer distinct flavors of strategic depth. Aeterna spans eras, asking players to draft cards and manage resources across shifting historical landscapes, testing tactical foresight. Tianxia, set in China's Warring States period, blends politics, trade, and tower defense as players vie for prestige while fending off nomadic invaders. It's a Euro-style game with layered mechanics and historical nuance. Meanwhile, Wroth provides the challenge of area control and alliances that can suddenly turn cold just like the air outside. Together, these games reflect the season's introspective mood, where complexity and strategy take center stage. This year's National Toy Hall of Fame finalists celebrate both nostalgia and innovation for us. From timeless tabletop classics like Catan, Battleship, and Trivial Pursuit. Or for those toys that make us scratch our head and say really — thus soft balls of Snow. Iconic toys like Furby and Tickle Me Elmo bring a wave of 90s tech nostalgia for your kids, while Spirograph and Connect Four remind us of our childhoods. Thanks for listening and be sure to head over to our Discord channel and discuss not board games, but who do you think should be in the Toy Hall of Fame. Learn more about your ad choices. This week, Cam & Dylan dive into The Innocents (1961) — the gothic ghost story that proves kids are always the scariest part of any horror movie. Directed by Jack Clayton and based on Henry James's novella The Turn of the Screw, this black-and-white creepfest is so atmospheric it'll make you check your windows for Victorian orphans. We'll talk about Deborah Kerr playing a governess who really should've swiped left on this job, how the film's use of shadows and silence still feels scarier than half the jump-scare factory movies today, and why this was considered “too intense” for 1961 audiences (spoiler: it still holds up). As always, expect Cam & Dylan to lace in jokes, 90s kid references, and probably an argument over which is creepier: a possessed child… or a Furby. So grab your popcorn, dim the lights, and let's get extra with The Innocents. Wanna ask us something?!? How is your hormone health supported in your workplace, or is it at all? Lou Furby is setting the standard, along with UK law to establish what Menopause support looks like in the workplace. Her infamous "MenoTalk", an accredited organization within her workplace is to not only supply menopausers with the tools and benefits, but also the support. Unlike other employee resource groups, the members don't have to "do" anything, they just need to show up and be themselves. Often when menstruators are facing perimenopause or menopause, they're turned away from doctors, peers, and managers as we are still fairly new at understanding both the symptoms (since it varies by every single human) but also how to adequately support this stage in life when women seemingly restart puberty all over again. Right now, MenoTalk is only available at SpecSavers, Lou's employer, but wait until she white labels it and delivers it to every organization worldwide! You don't have to reinvent the wheel, Lou has done the heavy lifting and you get to simply receive and implement it in your own workplace. Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in the '80s and break down the themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Dense cityscapes, exotic fashions, humans sharing the streets with robots and cyborgs...the visual aspects of cyberpunk worlds are readily detectable and typically anticipated by the average sci-fi consumer. But the Blade Runners and Neuromancers and tech noir tales of science fiction owe their most anticipated signifiers to a seldom discussed comic story created by two titans of genre fiction and published in a broadly influential magazine that created from whole cloth the genre we think of as "Cyberpunk". In this episode, we discuss The Long Tomorrow and the story of its creators' collaboration, the powerful influence of Metal Hurlant and Heavy Metal on 1970s science fiction, the heady combination of the bandes dessinées art style and American noir, Moebius's arresting creations and Dan O'Bannon's fertile imagination, and whether or not cyberpunk is a matured genre. We also talk about the "cyberpunk purity test", bromine poisoning, hi-tech Furbies, #RIPAOL, "older brother magazines", the Shinders backroom right of passage, Moebius FM, Jodorowsky's Dune, cultural dandelions, sex panels, the first cyberpunk POC main character, tempered edgelordiness, the leveling effect of streaming on culture, and The Bonfire of the Vanities gets a beatdown!Le pied?NEWS UPDATE: Anthropic settles!https://www.theverge.com/news/766311/anthropic-class-action-ai-piracy-authors-settlementCheck out the totally real(?) AI Breakthroughs: 92% Health Accuracy, Nonprofit Literacy Tools, and Coding Tool Challenges

A recent study supported by Apple reveals that a new artificial intelligence model, known as the wearable behavior model, can flag health conditions with an impressive accuracy of 92%. This model, trained on over 2.5 billion hours of data from wearable devices, outperforms traditional health prediction methods that rely solely on basic biometric measurements. Researchers found that behavioral data, such as movement and sleep patterns, often provide stronger health signals than conventional metrics. The model has shown superior performance in dynamic health prediction tasks, including detecting pregnancy and assessing sleep quality. In the realm of education, non-profits are leveraging AI to address global inequities. Education Above All, a non-profit organization based in Qatar, has partnered with prestigious institutions like MIT and Harvard to create DigiWise, a free program aimed at improving AI literacy in developing countries. This initiative allows children to combat misinformation and utilize AI tools in the classroom. Their generative AI chatbot, Furby, is currently being used by over 5 million children in India, providing access to project-based learning resources. However, not all news is positive. A study from the AI benchmarking non-profit, METER, indicates that AI coding tools may actually hinder productivity for experienced developers, increasing task completion time by 19%. Developers had expected these tools to save time, but the reality was a slowdown due to factors such as unrealistic expectations, unfamiliarity with repositories, and the complexity of codebases. This highlights a significant gap between the anticipated benefits of AI tools and their actual performance in real-world scenarios.Additionally, a report from Cloud Zero reveals that while 91% of companies believe their AI investments are yielding returns, only half can substantiate this with concrete data. AI budgets are projected to increase significantly, yet many organizations struggle with visibility into their AI costs and return on investment. This situation underscores the need for effective cost tracking and governance in AI investments, as many companies risk overspending without clear evidence of ROI. The podcast emphasizes the importance of focusing on AI financial governance to help clients navigate these challenges and ensure sustainable growth in the sector. Three things to know today 00:00 Wearable AI Achieves 92% Accuracy While Coding Tools Slow Developers by 19%, Reports Find07:08 Model Wars Heat Up: Open Source Kimi K2 Outperforms GPT-4 While Corporates Cut Chatbot Spend11:53 MSP Workflow Wars: New Integrations Highlight Critical Role of Orchestration in IT Services This is the Business of Tech.    Supported by:  https://cometbackup.com/?utm_source=mspradio&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=sponsorship ThreatDown Webinar:  https://bit.ly/threatdown All our Sponsors: https://businessof.tech/sponsors/ Do you want the show on your podcast app or the written versions of the stories?
