Jerry & Tracy discuss the very haunted Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta, Canada. Hear about the infamous Ghost Bride, Sam the Bellman and of course the missing room 873.
The mythological and the mysterious are intertwined in Yangsze Choo's novel "The Fox Wife." The story is set in 1908 Manchuria (in northeast China,) and we meet a fox spirit named Snow who assumes a human form to track down the person responsible for her child's death. Also in the novel, we meet Bao Gong, a retired teacher and detective who has a special gift to sniff out the truth and identify fox spirits. So when Bao is hired to investigate a mysterious death, we see how the worlds of both Snow and Bao Gong begin to converge. In this episode, Yangsze generously revisits her books "The Night Tiger" and "The Ghost Bride," two favorites of mine. She also shares more about her Malaysian roots and how they breathe life into her work, offering readers a chance to consider the intricate ties between humans and nature. Plus you'll get some great book recommendations and lots more.BOOK:The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo on Amazon or Bookshop. The Ghost Bride of Ravine Cemetery Ravine Cemetery is located just outside of downtown Sylvania, Ohio and it is here, in this quiet neighborhood cemetery, that stories of a phantom bride have captivated the imaginations of many for over 50 years. The story of the ghost bride entered northwest Ohio folklore in the 1970s when a cemetery caretaker shared his knowledge of the legend with a friend, who, in turn, shared it with a Toledo Blade newspaper reporter. The legend involves the spirit of a woman who returns to the cemetery to visit the graves of her former husbands, three of them. It is said she will appear at dawn on the anniversary of either their death or their marriage, no one is sure which. There are many, including me, who suspect this legend is based on an actual person but, so far, the identity of the ghost bride remains a mystery. City Tavern (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) A bride and her bridesmaids were preparing for the wedding when one bridesmaid accidentally knocked over a candle, setting the curtains on fire. The fire spread throughout the tavern, taking the lives of the bride and her bridesmaids. The ghost of the bride is active today, especially during wedding events at the tavern. Some wedding photographers have even reported seeing her apparition appearing next to the (living) bride when looking through the camera viewfinder. Although, no one has caught her on film. Hotel Conneaut (Erie, Pennsylvania) Elizabeth and her new husband stayed in Room 321 on their honeymoon. Their blissful vacation was interrupted by a raging fire in the hotel. The husband was able to get out alive, but Elizabeth was trapped in the room and died. The heartbroken bride still roams the third floor, looking for her husband and sobbing. Wearing a wedding dress, she leaves behind the smell of jasmine. Curves (Onondaga Hill, New York) A similar story appears in Onondaga Hill folklore. About 60 years ago, a young couple died in a car crash on a very snaky road just after their wedding. People claim to see the bride on Halloween. Her glowing figure floats down the road in a wedding gown, searching for her husband. Some say she carries a bright orange lantern. To read more about this legend, visit Weird New York. Baker Mansion (Altoona, Pennsylvania) Anna Baker, the daughter of the rich Elias Baker, fell in love with a local steelworker. Her father forbade her to marry him, because he was of lower class. She died alone. Much later, The Baker Mansion (in Altoona, PA) was made into a museum and a wedding dress was put on display in a glass case in Anna's bedroom. When there is a full moon, the dress violently shakes, sometimes to the point of almost breaking the glass. Myth says she is so mad she never got to wear a wedding dress, and therefore shakes it in anger. Some people often report seeing it dance by itself (with the shoes tapping along).

It all started a hundred years ago, in 1923… actually, it started in March 2023 when we recorded this episode with Niky Horowitz! Hillwood's urban legends take a turn for the tragically romantic when Arnold and friends learn of the Ghost Bride (and her philandering sister!) in “Ghost Bride”. Nike's back for their second Jamie O.-centric episode with “Gerald vs. Jamie O.,” which pits brother against brother in Gerald's bid for the attention of pretty teenager Chloe.
