In this impactful episode Brad sits down with Steve Dalton, the Author of The 2-Hour Job Search and most recently “The Job Closer” to understand how so many people get sucked into the belief that job search has to be a long and arduous trek rather than a streamlined process. Key highlights from this episode include: Steve discusses what motivated him to write his first book and what prompted the follow up years later. The difference between job search tips and the elusive job search recipe. Where do most people get networking wrong by the advice out there on the internet. Steve breaks down the importance of trust building in the job search. He talks about the difference between proactive and reactive networking. What steps can be taken to work through the initial fear of reaching out during networking The importance of going into a job search with a learning forward attitude and how that actually looks in practice. How to lead with curiosity when connecting to others in a way that makes them feels valued. How can cover letters be utilized as an effective job search strategy rather than a document that will never been seen Guest Info: Steve Dalton was inspired by his students' difficult job searches during the 2008 financial crisis, so the then-Duke MBA career coach set out to create the first set of job search instructions to replace the ubiquitous networking “tips” which only worked for a select few. Steve Dalton has since delivered hundreds of workshops on his advocacy-building methods for both universities and employers following the success of his first book, The 2-Hour Job Search, which was published by Penguin Random House's Ten Speed Press in 2012. His books – including his 2021 follow-up The Job Closer – are both Amazon #1 best-sellers and have now sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide. Their “recipes” are currently taught at over 100 universities worldwide, and Dalton himself is a frequent guest speaker at top universities and Fortune 500 companies. Through his company, Contact2Colleague, Dalton provides workshops and keynotes to help companies improve their talent retention, advancement, and diversification through cohort onboardings, ERG presentations, company-wide trainings, and more. Dalton has been featured in Fast Company, the Wall Street Journal, and Fortune among others and was a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. His networking videos are popular on YouTube, and his video on how to answer “Tell me about yourself” is among YouTube's Top 1% most popular. Prior to career services, Dalton was a chemical engineer, strategy consultant, and marketer. Dalton holds an MBA from Duke and a chemical engineering degree from Case Western University. He currently resides in Durham, North Carolina. Have you heard of dooring? It is a bicyclist's nightmare. Dooring is when someone in a car along the side of the road opens the door just as you ride by on your bicycle and – WHAM! It happens a lot more people than you might think – and it probably ALMOST happens even more. There is an interesting way to prevent it that comes from the Netherlands. Listen and find out what it is. https://www.rd.com/article/open-car-door-right-hand/ Have you ever wondered the name of the person who discovered fire or invented the wheel? You might think it was too long ago to know but Cody Cassidy has done the research and was actually able to trace it all back to discover who did a lot of things - first, like who invented clothes and who drank the first beer. Cody is the author of the book Who Ate the First Oyster?: The Extraordinary People Behind the Greatest Firsts in History (https://amzn.to/2WMDa2f). Listen as he joins me to reveal some of these fascinating firsts. At some point during the job search, someone will inevitably tell us about the importance of ‘networking.' It represents an especially important part of the job hunt within the security profession. Hiring managers prefer to deal with those they know and trust — not unknown applicants that submit resumes online. The problem? No one tells you "how" to network. That can make the prospect of reaching out to strangers daunting. Our guest today has an answer to this issue. Joining me on the show this time is Steve Dalton, MBA. He's the Daytime Program Director of Career Services at Duke University. He's also the author of the book ‘The 2-Hour Job Search' and ‘The Job Closer.' In our conversation, Steve reveals a step-by-step system security professionals can use to find their next career opportunity. This would be useful for experienced practitioners looking to step up to the next rung on the career ladder, servicemembers looking to transition to the private sector, or a student looking for their first job. We also discuss: Why hiring managers are ignoring your résumé (and what to do about it) 7 questions to ask at every informational interview. Why managers actually DON'T want to hire the most qualified candidates for a job posting. The tool thousands of job seekers use to dramatically improve their attractiveness to prospective employers. There is a great article in this week's WSJ by Kathryn Dill that gets at the point that millions of resumes are scanned and rejected by employers because of key words, or breaks in employment or other factors. News Flash Folks - the current system of posting your resume to a want ad and then hoping someone gives you a job, is broken! It became obsolete with the internet and has not gotten much better. Some companies are starting to wake up, but you can take action now. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that the way to get a job is to answer a want ad with your resume. Instead, get clear on your personal value proposition. Decide what opportunities provide you with a competitive advantage. Build your network. Seek out referrals and references. In short, learn to think like an Entrepreneur of your own career. Sound familiar? Some great books to consider picking up: I Inc, Career Planning and Personal Entrepreneurship and Tiger in the Office, both by Mike Callahan The Two Hour Job Search, by Steve Dalton. There are alternatives. Give up on the broken system, be a leader and take control of your career. Good luck!

What is the first step for a veteran looking to transition out of the military into a civilian career, or for any job seeker? What are the areas where veterans can excel in the career search process? How is hiring going to change in response to the impacts of COVID-19? This week, author, keynote speaker, and career search advisor Steve Dalton joins hosts Lindsey Pollak and Mike Abrams to highlight the importance of professional relationships and referrals, discuss how the hiring landscape may change, and provide prescriptive advice for conducting a successful career search. Steve addresses the areas where veterans excel that can help provide an advantage in the job search process. He also explores the similarities and differences of career searching today versus career searching during the financial crisis in 2008 and explains why he has optimism for job searchers today. Steve is a Program Director and Senior Career Consultant for the full-time MBA Program at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. He holds his own MBA from the same institution and a chemical engineering degree from Case Western Reserve University. Prior to entering the career services industry, Steve was an Associate Marketing Manager at General Mills, and a Strategy Consultant at A.T. Kearney (now Kearny). Steve is also the founder and CEO of Contact2Colleague, a corporate training firm specializing in helping organizations teach their personnel to turn strangers into advocates on demand. ABOUT US Welcome to the FourBlock Podcast, a show that examines veteran career transition and the military-civilian divide in the workplace. Veterans are often unprepared to return home and begin new careers. We call this the Fourth Block. FourBlock is a national non-profit that has supported thousands of transitioning service members across the nation in beginning new and meaningful careers. Mike Abrams (@fourblock) is an Afghanistan veteran, FourBlock founder, director of the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration, and author of two military transition books. He'll be representing the military transition perspective. Lindsey Pollak (@lindsaypollak) is a career and workplace expert and New York Times bestselling author of three career advice books. Lindsey will be representing the civilian perspective of this issue. Veterans, explore new industries and make the right connections. Find a career that fits your calling. MUSIC REVIEWS ON STEVE DALTON & TH LEVITICUS SINGERS OF CHARLOTTE.Award-Winning Gospel Ensemble Steve Dalton & The Leviticus Singers of Charlotte Release Victorious REMIX, “I WIN, The Remix ft. LeJuene Thompson & Uncle Reece”New Remix Sets The Stage For Upcoming CD, As One: Release The SOUND(Charlotte, NC) – February 26, 2016 - There is power in our words. No one knows that better than the award-winning ensemble, Steve Dalton & The Leviticus Singers of Charlotte. The North Carolina-based Gospel group, who has opened for artists such as Marvin Sapp, John P. Kee, Jonathan Nelson, DeWayne Woods, Micah Stampley, and Lexi, released their single, the declarative “I Win” in December 2014. The inspiring anthem caught the attention of Gospel music fans during the first week of its release with the song moving up the iTunes Christian & Gospel chart debuting at #59. Now the Steve Dalton & The Leviticus Singers of Charlotte return with an updated rendition of the track. Penned by the group's leader, the new single, “I WIN, The Remix” featuring Stellar Award Nominee, Dove Award Nominee and lead singer for the award-winning Donald Lawrence & Tri City Singers, LeJuene Thompson & Multi-Stellar Award Nominee Uncle Reece is hitting the Gospel airwaves now. Directed by Juan Ossa, the concept music video for the original song conveys stories of winning through real life testimonies of members of The Leviticus Singers of Charlotte. The video can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYzglk2b9gs. The video recently won a 2015 Gospel Image Award for Best Video of The Year. In addition, the music video and song were nominated for a 2015 Prayze Factor People's Choice Award, four 2015 Rhythm of Gospel Awards, four 2015 Independent Gospel Radio Alliance Awards, a 2015 Independent Artists Christian Music Award, a 2015 Gospel Blockbuster Award, a 2015 Texas Gospel Music Academy Award, a 2015 Chosen Voice Music Award and a 2015 Queen City Music Award. The vocally-blessed ensemble is thrilled about the accolades, but their goal is simply ministry. It's one of the reasons Dalton named the group “Leviticus”. He says, “I believe your destiny is tied to your name. So I was committed to choosing a name that reflected the purpose of the group and was rooted in scripture. I was led to name the group after the book of Leviticus because that's the first book where we are introduced to the Levites, those people that God called to maintain the temple. We consider ourselves modern day Levites,” shares Dalton.
