Join us for a remembrance of Rev. Dennis H. Freeman, an important figure in Indianapolis gospel music. Freeman passed away on January 15, 2025, at 84. Listen to a 2021 interview WFYI's Kyle long recorded with Freeman, along with rare recordings of his music. Rev. Dennis H. Freeman was a keyboardist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and choir director. In a monumental career, that stretched over eight decades, Freeman performed alongside the greatest names in gospel music, including James Cleveland, Dorothy Love Coates and the Gospel Harmonettes, The Caravans, Raymond Raspberry, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Dorothy Norwod, The Soul Stirrers, The O'Neill Twins, and many others. Freeman began working professionally in music as a teenager in the 1950s, playing organ at churches around the Indiana Avenue neighborhood. In 1959, he formed the Freeman Singers, a talented ensemble of singers that included the Indianapolis jazz vocalist Everett Green. By the 1960s, Freeman had become a fixture of gospel music in Indiana. Freeman took part in many historic events in Hoosier gospel music, including Mahalia Jackson's 1966 concert at Clowes Hall, and the first Indiana Black Expo in 1971. Freeman's music was heard across the country, on the many albums, singles and tapes he released.

Welcome back to another episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts! This spin on the dance floor sees our friend Nadine c/o Souldisco return to our airwaves to share a splendid conversation with Jared "Jay B" Boyd on the recent boxset reissue effort from Vinyl Me, Please titled: "Truth Is Where It's At -- A Gospel Truth Collection". The Gospel Truth Label (aka Stax Records Gospel Label), was an imprint of the famous Stax Records label from Memphis, Tennessee. The Gospel Truth series debut in 1972 and produced over 20 albums until 1978, featuring some of the biggest names in Gospel music: The Rance Allen Group, The Staple Singers, The Soul Stirrers, The Pilgrim Jubilees, and The Mighty Clouds of Joy. These albums featured a wide range of Gospel music styles including traditional Gospel, contemporary Christian music, and Soul Gospel. The Gospel Truth series was known for its high-quality production and arrangements, with some of the most talented musicians and producers in the industry working on the albums. Lauded for it's powerful and uplifting messages, this series featured songs + albums touching on themes of faith, hope, and love. Although Stax Gospel and The Gospel Truth series had a relatively short lifespan, they made a significant impact on the Gospel music industry and helped to popularize Gospel music outside of the church. The legacy of Stax Gospel and The Gospel Truth series lives on, with their influence felt in the music of contemporary Gospel artists and the continued popularity of Gospel music worldwide. Jay B authored the special 20-page Listening Notes booklet included in this boxset. Limited to 1,000 numbered copies, the box set includes 6LPs on 180g black vinyl, with AAA lacquers cut from the original tapes by Ryan K. Smith of Sterling Sound. Intro by: Gail NoblesPhoto credit: Lovelystatue901 - Own workUsage: Wikipedia CC BY-SA 4.0Hello, I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to a show about the gospel greats. Today's topic is Rev. James Cleveland.Rev. James Cleveland believed that gospel music should be low keyed. He didn't believe in rock gospel. James Cleveland believed gospel music expressed love for Christ and that it was more about the message. In rock gospel, to him, the music is more important than the message. Some gospel singers think more about survival like The Mighty Clouds of Joy. They believed that gospel music should be up-beat. I remember James Cleveland being played a lot on the radio in the 80's & the Mighty Clouds of Joy too. I began to gradually notice a change in gospel music altogether. There was more than choir, piano, and organ. There were more instruments added. The gospel singers had more of a studio sound than of a live sound. They began to sound more modern than old fashioned.James Cleveland was not only a gospel singer, but a musician, arranger, composer, and choir leader. Cleveland incorporated traditional black gospel, soul, pop, and jazz in arrangements for mass choirs. On top of that, it seemed he was successful with his belief in doing gospel music the old fashioned way. When some gospel singers couldn't make it his way.Like the Mighty Clouds of Joy. They did things different. They needed hit records, & they were a quartet kind of group. They had a hit record titled “Mighty High”. If you listen to the song, you can definitely hear the difference between them & James Cleveland. James Cleveland had no intention of crossing over into rock gospel. James Cleveland had sung songs like “Lord Do It, You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened, Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus, Where Is Your Faith In God, & Peace Be Still. When I think of him, I think of when I first heard him sing, “I Don't Feel No Ways Tired”. Throughout his career, Cleveland appeared on hundreds of recordings and earned 4 Grammy Awards. He was first gospel musician to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was inducted into the Gospel Musical Hall of Fame in 1984. Cleveland is regarded by many to be one of the greatest gospel singers that ever lived. He was known as the King of Gospel music.

In Philadelphia, a city known for providing the world of music with knockout talent, another yet unforgettable legendary diva in the making is unquietly emerging. Tanqueray Hayward is exploding on the Philadelphia music scene and is claiming her seat at the highly coveted table.Born in Philadelphia, music was calling Hayward's name from a very early age. Getting her first taste for the musical spotlight, Hayward started singing in church. Like many legendary singers before her, most notably: Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, and Aretha Franklin, the church provides the basics for soul singers when learning breath control, tone and confidence.Growing up and finding her voice, Hayward spent many days and nights belting out the songs from her idols, including “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul”-Mary J. Blige, the pioneering gospel group, The Clark Sisters, and the iconic Whitney Houston. After taking a leap of faith and resigning from a medical career, Hayward's vocal potency landed the opportunity to record background vocals for pop star Pink and open for internationally-acclaimed gospel artist Marvin Sapp in Philadelphia. In addition, Hayward has shared the stage with Carol Riddick, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Cedric Napoleon (Pieces of a Dream), Mozaic Flow, Lee Williams, and the Spiritual QC's, The Joy Boyz, and Shawn “Coco” McMillan just to name a few!Hayward has enjoyed the experience of performing to sold-out crowds at renowned music venues throughout Philadelphia. Hayward's vocal ability and stage presence are potent for all who dare to experience it without a filter. In May 2020 Tanqueray began work with one of the industry's “behind the scenes” and “go-to guy” TL Shider, Producer, Musician, Arranger, and Engineer from Plainfield, NJ. From this union, Tanqueray debuted in August 2020 with the track “This Thing” which made #1 on the Urban Influencer UK Soul Chart. In September 202 the highly acclaimed “This Kind of Love” was released which propelled Tanqueray on UK Rotation making #1 on the Urban Influencer UK Soul Chart, #3 on the Global Soul Chart, #3 on the UK Soul Chart, Winner of the President's Choice Award for Indie Soul Café Radio in New York in November 2020, Winner of Soul Tracks “New Artist of the Year” in December 2020 and nominated for “Best International Artist” for UK's Bright Star Awards in December 2020. The lead single “Caught Up” is currently #1 for the third week in a row on the Urban Influencer UK RnB and Soul Chart, and Radio Experts UK RnB Soul Chart, #3 on the UK Global Soul Chart, and #12 on the UK Soul Chart. With Hayward serving in the United States Navy, she learned valuable life lessons of self-discipline and an incredible work ethic which has naturally flowed over to her rising music career. As her fan base continues to grow, Hayward has her eyes set on the big picture.Tanqueray Hayward's artistic impact and contribution to the musical landscape of Philadelphia are now becoming undeniable. Hayward is working tirelessly to prove herself worthy to be mentioned in the company mentioned above. Stay tuned!

Song Title: Sing and ShoutSong by: Mighty Clouds of JoyPodcast vocals by: Gail NoblesEnding Podcast theme by: Gail NobleKeyboard Percussion by: Gail NoblesThe Mighty Clouds of Joy's "Sing and Shout" was an album released in 1983. They were a gospel group formed in 1959 in Los Angeles, CA as a traditional - based style group. It wasn't until 1961 as the group became famous. They added base, drums and keyboards to the standard guitar backup and developed a funky sound that split the difference between gospel, and rhythm and blues. In a break with tradition, the groups sound incorporated Soul, R&B, and Rock; all of which flourishes into their musical mix (one of their early hits was produced by Gamble and Huff) without diluting the essential religious essence of their material. The Mighty Clouds of joy sings and gives great praised to God. They praise the Lord with a shout and with instruments. When they sing a song, you can understand it , and that it's about the Lord. It was a song from their album Changing Times in 1979. I was eight years old and had no idea what the Mighty Clouds were singing about like I do today. We got to think about the cost and who we shake hands with and who we make deals with. Probably even the ones we sit down and eat with because the Bible warns us about the evil ones. Proverbs 23:6-76Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: 7For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. Proverbs 23 teaches that we need to consider what is diligently before us.Proverbs 23:4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Proverbs 23:6-7 warns us of a greedy kind of man that holds back from the poor and needy to increase his own wealth. If you're not careful, you can sign your life away. That's why the Bible warns us about a lot of things. Just because something looks and sounds good doesn't mean it's always good. Proverbs 3:31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.

QUARTET HISTORY MONTH, TODAY WE HONOR THE MIGHTY CLOUDS OF JOY
From Wikipedia and portions from this interview http://www.sfweekly.com/2002-08-14/news/california-loved/ Roger Troutman (November 29, 1951 – April 25, 1999), also known mononymously as Roger, was an American singer, composer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and the founder of the band Zapp who helped spearhead the funk movement and heavily influenced West Coast hip hop due to the scene's heavy sampling of his music over the years. Troutman was well known for his use of the talk box, a device that is connected to an instrument (frequently a keyboard, but most commonly a guitar) to create different vocal effects. Roger used a custom-made talkbox–the Electro Harmonix "Golden Throat," through a Moog Minimoog and later in his career a Yamaha DX100 FM synthesizer. As both band leader of Zapp and in his subsequent solo releases, he scored a bevy of funk and R&B hits throughout the 1980s. Biography Early career Born in Hamilton, Ohio, Roger was the fourth of ten children. His first band was called the Crusaders; however, they are not to be confused with the jazz group featuring Joe Sample and Wilton Felder. Troutman's band played in Cincinnati and recorded a single, "Busted Surfboard"/"Seminole". The band members were Rick Schoeny, Roy Beck, Dave Spitzmiller, and Denny Niebold. Troutman had formed various other bands with his four brothers, including Little Roger, and the Vels, and Roger and the Human Body. In 1977, he and the Human Body issued "Freedom", their first single. Within two years, Roger and his brothers were discovered by George Clinton, who signed the newly christened Zapp to his Uncle Jam Records label in 1979. The original line-up consisted of Roger Troutman, Larry Troutman, Lester Troutman, Terry Troutman, Gregory Jackson and Bobby Glover. Zapp made their professional television debut on the first and only Funk Music Awards show. A year later, as Uncle Jam Records was forced to close, Troutman signed with Bootsy Collins under Rubber Band Music to Warner Bros. Records and released his self-titled debut 'Zapp', which yielded "More Bounce to the Ounce", produced by Collins, co- produced, written, composed and performed by Troutman. The song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Soul Singles chart in late 1980. The debut album reached the top 20 of the Billboard 200. From 1980 to 1985, Zapp released the gold-selling albums Zapp, Zapp II, Zapp III and The New Zapp IV U, including the Top 10 R&B singles "Be Alright", "Dance Floor", "I Can Make You Dance", "Heartbreaker", "It Doesn't Really Matter" and "Computer Love". Throughout Zapp's history, around 15 musicians participated. In 1993, Zapp released their biggest-selling album: Zapp & Roger: All the Greatest Hits. It featured remixed cuts of Troutman's solo singles along with a new single "Slow and Easy", (featured vocalists Shirley Murdock and Ronnie Diamond). The album sold over two million copies. The album Zapp VI: Back by Popular Demand was released in 2002 by the remaining brothers after the deaths of Roger and Larry. In 1981, Troutman cut The Many Facets of Roger, his first solo album. Featuring a funk cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", The album also featured the hit "So Ruff, So Tuff", which was similar to "More Bounce..." as were most Roger/Zapp singles during this time. The same year, Troutman recorded with Parliament-Funkadelic on the band's final Warner Brothers' album The Electric Spanking of War Babies. In 1984, Troutman issued his second solo album The Saga Continues..., which featured the singles "It's in the Mix" (which was dedicated to Soul Train and its host Don Cornelius), and a cover of Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour", which featured gospel group the Mighty Clouds of Joy. In 1987, Troutman scored his most successful solo album with Unlimited!, carried by the massive hit "I Want to Be Your Man" which rose to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the R&B chart. Alongside his successful career as Zapp member and solo artist, Troutman also became a producer and writer for other artists including Shirley Murdock, whose 1985 Platinum debut featured the Roger-produced hit "As We Lay". He also produced for Zapp member Dale DeGroat on his solo efforts. In 1988, Troutman made an appearance on Scritti Politti's third album Provision, providing talk box vocals on the songs "Boom There She Was" and "Sugar and Spice". Three years later, Troutman released his final solo album with Bridging the Gap, featuring the hit "Everybody (Get Up)". He worked with Elvis Costello on the song "The Other Side of Summer". In 1989, NBA Entertainment selected Troutman among a variety of candidates to record a tribute song called "I'm So Happy" for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Career re-emergence Troutman toured after the release of All the Greatest Hits. He was invited to appear as guest artist on several hip-hop albums, including Snoop Dogg's 1993 debut Doggystyle. In 1995 he was featured on Eazy-E's posthumous album Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton on "Eternal E". The same year Troutman performed vocals on 2Pac and Dr. Dre's single "California Love". The song became Troutman's biggest-selling and most successful single to date as the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over two million copies, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Troutman then produced a top 10 R&B hit cover of the Persuaders' "Thin Line Between Love and Hate", performed by Shirley Murdock and R&B group H-Town, with talk box by Troutman. The movie soundtrack to A Thin Line Between Love and Hate also included a club hit "Chocolate City". In 1998, he appeared in a remix version of Sounds of Blackness' "Hold On (A Change Is Coming)", which sampled Zapp's "Doo-Wah Ditty (Blow That Thang)". Roger last recorded on the song "Master of the Game" from rapper Kool Keith's album Black Elvis/Lost In Space. Death On the morning of April 25, 1999, Troutman was found shot and critically wounded outside his northwest Dayton recording studio around 7 am. According to doctors, the 47-year-old had been shot several times in the torso. Troutman died during surgery at the Good Samaritan Hospital and Health Center. Roger's brother Larry was found dead in a car a few blocks away with a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The car matched the description of a vehicle leaving the scene of Roger Troutman's shooting, according to witnesses. The gun found with Larry also matched the one that fired the fatal shots at Roger, suggesting that Larry had shot Roger and then committed suicide. With both men dead, and with no known witnesses, the case was described as a murder-suicide. Friends and family speculated that the source of the dispute was Larry's financial troubles and Roger's desire to dissolve their business partnership. Troutman, who lived 24 years in the Dayton area, was survived by six sons, six daughters, and nine grandchildren.

Kenneth F. Marsh was born on November 11, 1968, to Clarence and Barbara Marsh. At age 10 years old he learned to play drums. After singing his first solo, “If God Isn't Dead” by the Mighty Clouds of Joy, Kenneth recognized at that time that he had a gift. In 1988 he formed a group called “El Shaddai." This turned into later ministries such as “Psalms”, “Kenneth & Company”, “New Beginnings”, “Fresh Anointing”, and “KFM Singers”. Kenneth has had much spiritual training under Pastors Tony Smith, Roland Joe Smith, and Craig Thomas. He currently serves God through Word Alive Christian Cathedral faithfully under the leadership of Bishop Dr. Michael D Chapman Sr. He has opened for many gospel artists, won 2nd place at a Gospel Apollo Showcase and has been nominated for numerous gospel awards. They are also recognized as being early pioneers of today's Comtemporary Gospel sound. You may have heard R&B and Disco in their sound. The Mighty Clouds of Joy is the first gospel group known to be on Soul Train. One of my favorite songs from the Mighty Clouds of Joy is called "Mighty High". It is a 1975 Disco/R&B single. The single proved to be very popular with disco fans. It stayed at number one on the disco/dance chart for five weeks. The Mighty Clouds of Joy is an amazing Gospel group to be loved in both Gospel and Disco. I'm Gail Nobles and today's topic is.....

Surprised she stated well….to introduce and present to others traditional gospel music and its history along with the interviewing of gospel legends. Her concern was that the only time you heard quartet and traditional music from legends were upon their passing. And she wanted to give them there flowers while they were living. These legends paved the way for all gospel artists out here today and she wants people to understand gospel music has come a mighty long way. As one legend stated we had to go in the back door to perform and exit the back door to leave yes we have come a mighty long way. Mr. McCamy asked for an email of her vision and not without her first and second draft being accidently erased on her computer while she was trying to finish. Mighty Clouds of Joy lead singer Joe Ligon dies at age 80 From SOULTRACKS (December 11, 2016) We are sad to inform SoulTrackers of the death, at age 80, of legendary Gospel great, Joe Ligon, founder and lead singer of The Mighty Clouds of Joy. "SUNDAY NIGHT GOSPEL THE BEST IN GOSPEL MUSIC AND CONVERSATION. GOD'S IN CONTROL" God's thought are not your thoughts ,neither are God's ways. God's ways as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are God's ways and thoughts higher than yours. Because the world is in an abnormal, fallen conndition, people tend to thik that chance governs the universe. Events may seem to occur randomly, with little or no meaning. People who view the world this way have overlooked one basic fact: the limitations of human understanding. What you know of the world you inhabit is only the tip of the iceberg. Submerged benearth the surface of the visible world are mysteries to vast for you to comprehend. God is in and all around you, he knows all their is to know about all part of your life he work on your behalf. God is careing for you... This is why you must live by faith and not by sight, trusting God's mysterious majestic PRESENCE. Romans 8:28 Job 42: 1-3 1Peter 5-7 2 Corinthians 5:7
The ArtistGifted Guitarist - Southern Gospel Artist – Human Justice Humanitarian – Man of God In 2014, Arthur Roland was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame as a member of Lucille Pope and the Pearly Gates. He has been playing and touring for 35 years as a professional gospel artist. He is among the first Gospel groups to record and chart on a White Southern Gospel Music label (Morningstar Records). The 2009 album was entitled "It's all Good." He has also written hits for artists like the Williams Brothers (God will Deliver), Slim and the Supreme Angels (Separated Right from Wrong), and Lucille Pope and Pearly Gates (Real Christians Stand up; Great Reunion) to name a few. Roland has played and sung on countless other works with artists like the Blind Boys of Alabama, Dorothy Norwood and many others. In 2004, he toured Switzerland and other Countries on "The tribute to Mahalia Jackson tour." He released his first solo project in 2014, "Revival on a Tour Bus," which is still a top seller in Southern Gospel. His sophomore album, "In God's Own Time,” is slated for release in July 2015. Humble beginningsWhen you accept salvation at the early age of six years old and up grow up in Bostwick, an Eastern Georgia town with fewer than 400 people, you learn to listen and sometimes you even dream of a world bigger than the one that you were born in. It was at his family's church, Mt. Vernon Baptist, that he first heard the music of the Old Negro Spirituals sung and grew to love them. But when his parents took him to his first Gospel show and he heard legends like the Gospel Keynotes, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, and the Williams Brothers a chord ran through his body when he heard the guitars and the drums playing. He was so fascinated by the Gospel quartet sound that he went home and formed a group with his sisters. They copied the sounds and crafted it into their own. They became a children's quartet that traveled and even recorded. One night the young Arthur had a very clear dream that they were performing on a huge stage and he was doing something that he had never done before – he was playing the guitar! When he woke up from that dream he was gifted by God with the ability to play the guitar just as he had in the dream. He recognized it as a gift from God. From these humble beginnings, Roland has spent 35 years of his life touring, singing, playing, and writing music for some of those same artists that he saw when he walked into that Gospel concert at six years old. He has been amazingly blessed to learn side-by-side from legends like Clarence Fountain and the Blind Boys of Alabama, Lucille Pope, the late Willie Johnson, and Joe Ligon of the Mighty Clouds of Joy. These talented Gospel greats taught him the history and integrity of this style of music and sharpened his skills as a performer, writer, and singer. He also learned the history of the blues, which emanated from the church, and infused it into his traditional but unique gospel style. Servant leaderIn addition to this professional Gospel music career, Roland gives his time, his voice, and musical platform to the community and to speak on racial intolerance and human injustice. He has chaired the foundation "Urban Future", a St. Louis organization that helps inner city youth focus on school musical dreams and college goals. He co-produced and donated his musical talent to "The Restoration Project" with five of St. Louis' top blues artist. Thousands of dollars were raised for the cd project for the foundation. For the past two years Roland has also spoken in Florida with Jaimie Foxx and other noted celebrities after the Trayvon Martin incident and was at ground zero in Ferguson, MO. As a resident of St. Louis he, along with other St Louis leaders and known personalities, pleaded for calmer heads after the violence erupted. “In God's Own Time,” his new cd project, is dedicated in remembrance of the Michael Brown incident with songs like Tryna Get Ready and Refuge. These songs were inspired and came about after being in the middle of, talking to, and hearing and seeing the faces of the people at Ground Zero. I pray that it honors their words, their pain, and their grief as well as the hurt caused by continuing racial intolerance.

Mighty Clouds of Joy Since his appearance in last week's Super Bowl commercial, many have automatically linked Chrysler with the gritty music of the artist Eminem. And while the soundtrack of "Lose Yourself" worked as a reflection of Detroit's streets, the song that may in fact be more relevant to the company today has its roots in 1971. Given where Chrysler was just 20 months ago, the music that seems to best capture the emotions coming out of its Auburn Hills headquarters is the 40-year-old pop tune "Mighty Clouds of Joy." As the company continues to introduce its well-reviewed new or significantly refreshed products -- vehicles that they were working on throughout those dark days of bankruptcy -- lines from the song like "those old storm clouds are slowly drifting by" take on a whole new meaning. Just ask some of those who were there...which is exactly what John McElroy does in this week's edition of Autoline. Joining John on an all-Chrysler panel are three company veterans who, like many, witnessed the bad times but kept pushing ahead because of the product. Joe Dehner, the head of Dodge Design, Chris Barman, the VLE of E-Segment vehicles and Klaus Busse the head of Interior Design, all talk with John about Chrysler -- the company, its people but most importantly its new product -- and where they all go from here.
