For 60 years, New York composer Steve Reich has been one of classical music's most celebrated revolutionaries. Pioneering minimalism in the 1960s, a musical style based on repetition and shifting rhythms, his strange experiments with cassette tape led to orchestral masterpieces – now performed around the world. His career has not only helped define the latest era of classical music, but had an enormous influence on pop, rock and electronica. He has helped shape 20th Century music in a way few can claim to match. To mark 60 years since his first major piece,1965's It's Gonna Rain, he takes Alastair Shuttleworth through the process and stories behind some of his greatest works, including Clapping Music, Different Trains and City Life. He also reflects on his legacy, his plans for the future and what, at the age of 88, still inspires him to compose

Episode 142 Chapter 04, Electronic Music Composition by Process. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. Playlist Time Track Time* Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:31 00:00 Yves Klein, “Monotone-Silence Symphony” (1947). I could not find any recorded versions of this piece, so I produced this realization of my own to capture the feel and nature of this process work. Klein conceived this as performance art in which an orchestra would only play a single note, continuously, for 20 minutes followed by another 20 minutes of silence. I've examined the score and can see that Klein also intended that the same note could be played in different octaves. The playing would have been staged so that one group of musicians could overlap another, both for reasons of fatigue but also to allow smooth transitions for the wind instruments because players would need to take a breath. My version includes electronic instruments for multiple parts, each part playing the same note, often in different octaves. The introduction of instrumental groups was planned in stages, each overlapping the previous grouping, gradually shortening in duration as the piece goes on. 40:03 01:34 Steve Reich, “It's Gonna Rain” (1965). Process piece using tape loops and phasing. 08:03 41:38 La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, “31 VII 69 10:26 - 10:49 PM” (1969). Early work employing electronic drones. Eponymous untitled album popularly known as "The Black Record" or "The Black Album" Mine is an original copy. The cover is black gloss print on matt black and very hard to read. Numbered edition limited to 2800 copies of which numbers 1-98 are dated and signed by the artists. This work “was recorded at the date and time indicated in the title, at Galerie Heiner Friedrich, München. The work “31 VII 69 10:26-10:49 PM” is a section of the longer work: Map Of 49's Dream The Two Systems Of Eleven Sets Of Galactic Intervals Ornamental Lightyears Tracery. Play this side at 33 1/3 rpm only.” Early work employing electronic drones. By the mid-sixties, Young and his partner Marian Zazeela were creating music for electronic drones as an extension of their group, The Theatre of Eternal Music. Using a Heathkit sine wave oscillator and later Moog modules as sources, they created drone pieces that employed “extended duration time signatures” and “long sustained tones, intervals, triads and chords to create the musical texture.” A reissue has now occurred on the label Super Viaduct. 22:49 49:24 Terry Riley, “A Rainbow in Curved Air” (1969). Minimalist process work for electronic organ. 18:46 01:12:08 Steve Reich, “Four Organs” (1970). Process piece for four electronic organs. 24:11 01:31:04 Brian Eno, “Discreet Music” (1975). Process piece for synthesizers. 31:35 01:55:12 David Behrman, “Figure in a Clearing” (1977). Process piece using the KIM- 1 microcomputer 19:13 02:25:30 Laurie Spiegel, “A Harmonic Algorithm” (1980). Self-generating program running on an Apple II computer. 03:08 02:44:48 Alvin Lucier, “Music for Piano with One or More Snare Drums” (1990). Process piece for amplified piano and snare drum. 09:20 02:47:48 Marina Rosenfeld, “Two (Joy of Fear)” (2005). What a great way to start off the new year! Jumping right in with this excellent mix from friend of the show, Andy McNeill. Andy records as Maple Mountain Sunburst and he released a wonderful album last year - https://maplemountainsunburst.bandcamp.com/album/ecstatic He also did a guest mix for us last year which you can find here - Mixcloud & Low Light Mixes Blog. My favorite discovery in this mix is the third track, "My Dog's Eyes" by Zammuto. I am blown away each time I hear it. One of my favorite track of 2024 is also included in the mix - Andy's own "Pop-a-matic." So good! The rest of the mix a great as well. Here's what Andy says about his latest creation: "Cycles, patterns and joy in repetition. I'll paraphrase redditer Waves_of_awesome who said strongly repetitive music has the ability to transport the listener to a meditative state. “… repeating passages echo like a mantra, almost hypnotizing you”. It's a fundamental yet unpremeditated element in my musical endeavours. A lot of different genres represented here — not really intentionally, I just wanted to include some favourites and influential tracks. But wait where's O Superman? It's Gonna Rain? I guess we'll have to do a part two. I hope you all enjoy the journey." - Andy >>>Links to all the music used in this mix
We are once again looking at the most popular song from 100 years ago! It's 1924's "Ain't Gonna Rain No More", an old folk song performed by a variety of artists, but most famously by Wendell Woods Hall, considered by some to be the first modern pop star. We'll explore some of the popular lyrics of the song, a song which has countless verses since lots of singers like to add new ones. And we'll explore the dialectical variation of losing the "R" sounds, particularly after vowels, like how in the song of the episode, "more" becomes "mo". This is a phenomenon known as derhoticization, R-dropping, R-less, and various other things. Where did this pronunciation quirk originate, and where did it spread to? We'll also talk about the concept of R-like sounds in general, and how they're different in different languages. What makes a sound R-like, even in a language that doesn't have the letter R? For Eurovision, we're talking about Cyprus's 2024 song "Liar" by Silia Kapsis. La repetición está presente desde las ceremonias tribales hasta los viejos salones; se practicaba en la Edad Media y es básica, en forma de loop, en la música electrónica. This series will be titled Courage and Confrontation. Pastor Harris will follow Elijah the Tishbite. We will follow him from insignificance and we will watch God take him and turn him into one of the giants of the Biblical era. The Bible will remind us that Elijah was more like us than we could even imagine. It is important that we all recognise and accept that God can use us all mightily, even despite ourselves. This series is dedicated to not only the current membership of First United Methodist Church in downtown Oklahoma City. But to all those who have and continue to love the ministry of First Church over the years, whose lives were changed for the better due to this over century long ministry. I pray that we would be encouraged, and empowered with what Pastor Harris refers to as “a Holy Boldness” to be the new group of Elijah's that he hoped would appear on the scene and say “Here I stand” and that will refuse to back down. [02:16:16] The Cure- Just Like Heaven “Where words fail, music speaks.” There's no such thing as a perfect story. I've been trying to create it since the mixtape began. It's what keeps me creating. A blank TDK cassette tape was my canvas. Records were my tool. Some of you were my inspiration. My parent's got me my first duel turntables for Christmas during junior year of high school (1985). One had pitch control & the other not so much. Trying to beat mix was an event, but looking back on it, it was practice man (Allen Iverson 200?). There was hope though. A new kid just moved across the street from Panama that knew how to properly beat mix. Tim Huggins aka The Lonesome Cowboy had the equipment for the job. This is where I got my first taste of real beat mixing. After countless hours of trying to mix Madonna, Tears For Fears & Soul Sonic Force together I was getting there. Us and few other fellas used to battle for spinnin' time during Youth Center dances. While there I realized my niche' was house/freestyle music not really hip-hop. Back then hip hop was mainly drum beats and samples. Freestyle and House had electronic swirls, melodies, samples, and disco meets a hard hip hop breakbeat, but faster. At times I felt like I was floating/flying. Then came my failed attempt at college. But hey, the music was great! In the Fall of '87 I moved into a dorm room in Eddy Hall at ENMU (the only co-ed dorm on campus- cool). I showed up with my music. By now in my mind I was a mixtape specialist. But who has time for that when you're out on your own for the first time? Eat. Sleep. Basketball. Party. Repeat. I lived on the 2nd floor and I remember consistently sticking my big ass speakers out the window so we'd have music to ball to and dance between games. Every pickup game was a dance party. I landed a couple of gigs for some frats for free. Hell, I DJ'd at a damn football stadium for a football game. What a time to be alive! I just loved DJing and discovering what I could do with all this music I had. I must give credit to music for all the people I met. I was social, but not as much as music helped me. By Fall '88 all that music, mixtape business and partying led me to one of the best decisions of my life. I joined the Air Force. My first assignment was Keesler AFB, Mississippi. Once again I found myself on the 2nd floor of the dorms. I was making mixtapes for late night work shifts, room parties & car rides. We all used to go Fiesta or Take Two nightclubs on the beach. I wasn't just there to dance, but I was checking out what the DJ's were playing and then going to the record store the next payday and picking up those tracks. I probably drove the DJs crazy asking for the name of the track they were playing. This also included a bunch of people loading into a car go to New Orleans almost every payday weekend and heading to The Blue Crystal- an industrial, goth, alternative club. We'd wear all black and do a million stupid things in the streets of New Orleans or go to the nightclub in Jax Brewery. Dancing until 4 & 5 in the morning. I was always so curious about what the DJ was gonna play in a big city. So many discoveries in those joints. Just trying to expand my musical taste and what would make the perfect mix. Since then, I learned tempo & keys by ear of all this stuff I was listening to. There was so much more to making a mixtape. This mix has been put off for years. It's truly hard to capture a snapshot of not just my life but those around you during our huge transition(s). I don't like letting people down, so that fear of failure put this “mixtape” off for years. This mix isn't just about me but for the people that lived it. It incorporates the people I met during those times before I was a club DJ (it took me took til 1997 after giving up around 1993). I hope it takes you back. As with every mix I hope it tells a story. Music does most of my talking. It's not perfect, but is anything. Enjoy…

As 1985 continued, Stock Aitken Waterman straddled two genres — hi-NRG and pop/R&B. Two of their regular artists, Dead Or Alive and Hazell Dean, released new singles: "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me To The Doctor)" and "They Say It's Gonna Rain" respectively. And the trio began work with R&B singer Haywoode ("Getting Closer") and A-list girl group The Three Degrees ("The Heaven I Need"). Joining us to talk about those tracks are Hazell, Haywoode and Valerie Holiday and Helen Scott from The Three Degrees. There's also a bit of a theme to this episode's tunes, with two of them being later remade by other SAW artists and a third being a remake itself.
#62: Cher & Skeery celebrate St. Patrick's Day and get curious about how people are celebrating- despite the famous NYC parade being cancelled for a second straight year... so they Facetime with ultimate party guy Jersey Shore Sean to see what's happening at the bars and get a full report.
Dee Dee Warwick - You’re No Good (1963) The original version that, to my ears, cuts the Ronstadt version in half. Clint Ballard also wrote "The Game of Love" for Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. Look at that slugabed 2nd to the right. That's Eric Stewart of 10cc. Comb your hair, hippie. Doc Severinsen - Barbarella (1968) The theme to the soft-core romp featuring Jane Fonda. Check out the party scene for a frugging Spiro Agnew. Doc Severinsen was the comic foil and bandleader for Johnny Carson. With the funny suit jackets, etc. Doris (with Plums) - You Made a Fool of Me (1968) While this single is not from this album, it IS a bonus track if you can find this. I love her stuff. In fact, I confess to you right now that my song, "Epiphany", steals the first three chords of the verse. Those nutty Swedes. First, we steal ABBA. Then we steal this. Gary Crosby - I'm Gonna Call My Baby (1967) Son of the guy that sang "Hey Jude". James Iron Head Baker & Group - Black Betty (1933) A rendition of the slave song. Later, a hit for Ram Jam, who's singer was previously in The Lemon Pipers, who had a hit with "Green Tambourine." Johnny Buckett and his Cumberland River Boys - Hippie in a Blunder (1967-8) The anti-hippie sentiment of the late '60s was silly, tone-deaf (Bob Seger and Jan and Dean recorded anti-peacenik songs), and ultimately unnecessary since the peace movement itself would be bought, sold, repackaged, and neutered entirely just a couple of years later. Roxy Music - Manifesto (1979) I can't listen to Brian Ferry's vibrato for a very long time, but this song seems to be a good fit. Like a salesman. Redbone - Fais Do (1972) My confession. She will never see this post, but I used to dream about singing "Julie, Do Ya Love Me" to Julie Pawlowski (of Emporium Avenue) all the time. I still would. My god, I owned this on 8-track, a 2 tape set. I don't remember the TV commercial but there had to be one. "Magic Carpet Ride", "Fais Do", "Family Affair", so many songs. One after the other. Do you ever hear a song and snap into a place and time that hasn't entered your mind in decades? I got on the bus a few stops before her and would always sit in the middle of the two-space seat so that no one would take her spot. I think it worked once. Gladys Knight and the Pips - Come Together (1975) The Harvey Averne Dozen - The Word (1967) This is one of my favorite Beatle covers. Simple and funky. Sonny and Cher - It’s Gonna Rain (1965) No one talks about this b-side, the best thing I think Sonny or Cher ever did. His voice actually compliments the lyrics. There's a version where two different (and I mean different) lead vocal takes are played simultaneously. I don't think Sonny was that subversive, to be honest. Intentionally. Steve Clayton - (Girls Are Imitating) Twiggy (1967) Discogs: Vocalist and songwriter with a long and varied career. Released numerous singles in the late 1950s and early 1960s in various musical styles but never achieved a hit. I like Steve Clayton a real lot. This is very similar music to "Music To Watch Girls By" which was a hit at the time. He is like Mel Tormé true, but I can hear another music industry schlepper, Tony Bruno. If you are a vinyl junkie-type person and you marinate in the smoky studios of the '70s in your mind occasionally, do me a favor: Find a copy of his 1978 album Steve Not David. Does he mean David Clayton Thomas? I mean, by that time, no one cared about either one. The Beach Boys - Belles of Paris (1978) Horribly uncomfortable Mike Love emoting of some pretty awful lyrics, even by his standards. Bobby Byrd - I Know You Got Soul (1971) Bobby Lee Trammell - New Dance in France (1964) ANOTHER music orphan. He tried to be Jerry Lee Lewis, and he came THAT close, but the fates dictated otherwise. God, this episode of my show is sadder than usual. Listen for the fake audience and the attempt to glom onto Beatlemania. Unlike Tony Bruno and Steve Clayton, Trammell DOES have a Wikipedia page. Boffalongo - Dancing In The Moonlight (1970) The original version. The version that hit big was actually the third version. Adam West - Miranda (1966) The Free Design - Friends (Thank You All) (1971) Alex Harvey was the original punk. His singing career began in fucking 1958. It would be 17 YEARS before he sniffed the Top 40 in the UK, and people in the USA have never heard of him mostly. But those of us who have heard of SAHB are a universally smitten lot. This was a fantastic group that never took itself too seriously. This is a common thread in great bands. They recorded until 1978, but unlike other groups of the time, their last album, Rock Drill, was just as good as the ones they recorded at their peak of popularity. I present my favorite SAHB tracks. But I like many more. Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Hot City Symphony (1974) Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Give My Compliments To The Chef (1975) Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Shake That Thing (1975) Sensational Alex Harvey Band - The Dolphins (1979) Johnny Mathis - Love Is All (Theme from “Midnight Cowboy”) (1970) Lorne Greene - Bonanza! (1964) Andy Williams - Music To Watch Girls By (1967) ??? - ??? Rodd Keith - Let's Go Savage You And I (?) A song-poem. Leonard Nimoy - I Walk The Line (1970) Starland Vocal Band - Liberated Woman (1977) I mentioned this song on the Setlusting Bruce podcast. I called this my favorite (or was it least favorite) SVB song, because of my love for the chauvinistic sentiment masked as chivalry. Nino Tempo and April Stevens - Love Story (1972) #5 in the Netherlands! From Buffalo, NY!!! Eric Burdon & The Animals - Mama Told Me Not To Come (1967) Neil Sedaka - Dimbo Man (1972)
Really focusing on enjoying rich tonality and melody tonight; not too worrying about structure or development, and letting "free" actually mean free! Tonight's music had a few quotes; I fell into Gershwin's "I Loves You, Porgy" after realizing after the fact I had already played a bit of the melody. Also, messing around with intervals of thirds, it naturally went into a touch of "Soon It's Gonna Rain" from The Fantasticks (looking at you, Janice!). Enjoy!
Have you lived through a drought? If so, you know that days turn into, weeks that turn into months of no rain. Vegetation dries up, your water-use is limited and it feels like it will never end. Then one day, it rains. The same is true of spiritual droughts. Today, Pastor Kevin Queen is back […] The post DO OVER: WEEK 4 | It’s Gonna Rain appeared first on Cross Point Church.

It was raining today... so that means that in Adelaide the internet becomes dial-up :P So! Cause I know a bunch of you rad Dimmus watch these after we do them, i've uploaded the version that usually goes to YouTube. In this one I talk about the fight Neeks and I had this morning, how she's not on the podcast anymore... she comes back. Oh! And on this one I talk a bit about how we're all still actually just a strange species of animal, in a hut, hoping the rain doesn't get in. It's fun, it's egotistical, it's psychic (because I do the card readings that Neeks normally does, but she ac... she actually comes back at that point and takes over. funny how she shows up when I start doing her own segment better than her....). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/heydimmu/message

We've talked a ton of gospel here on Heat Rocks, but this episode marks the first time we've discussed a full gospel album on the show, and from none other than one of the very first gospel quartets, The Sensational Nightingales. The group was formed in 1942 as simply The Nightingales, but it wasn't until 1946 and the introduction of the sensational singer Julius Cheeks when the band really began to hit their stride. The quartet still tours to this day, albeit with a slightly different lineup, but the soul and tradition of Southern black gospel music is alive and well. Singer/songwriter Van Hunt joins us in the studio to talk about his personal connection to gospel music, the influence of the Sensational Nightingales, and how artists can make the move from gospel to secular music. You probably know him from the movie "The Warriors". He was the Warchief of the Orphans from the Tremont section of the Bronx. But he's so much more than that small, but iconic role. Apache Ramos invited me to his house in Flushing, Queens to do this podcast. His daughter (and manager), Jaz, and the rest of his family couldn't have been more hospitable or nicer. Jaz joins us during this episode as well. We take it all the way back to his childhood, being in plays out in California, how he got the role in "The Warriors", which in a lot of ways changed the course of his life. We discuss his career in the music business being an A&R for "Streetwise" Records. Touring with "New Edition" and the "Fat Boys" amongst a ton of other legendary musicians. He has been in several movies including the short film "High & Tight" which caught the attention of the Oscars. He's an extremely interesting man with amazing stories and an awesome attitude towards life and his family. I hope you enjoy this episode. I loved doing this one for sure! "We're Gonna Rain on you Warriors!" Respect.

This week, I talk to my non-blood brother, Mike Wang. We talk about his journey through life, growing up in a broken family, but making it work through the support of amazing family members and friends. Also assimilating to a new culture in moving to the States as a young boy without his parents and being a trouble maker through his adolescence and young adulthood. We talk about how he got out of a pattern of negative situations and got himself above all difficulties he faced as a young man. I am extremely proud of this guy and I'm hoping his story can relate to many people who have gone through some similar situations. Remember, everyone has something. We all go through something. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. As always, thank you for listening, enjoy this episode. KTHANKSBYE
