REMEMBERING JELLYBEAN JOHNSON (Morris Day and The Time drummer)1956 - 2025with Prologue by Zapp Band drummer LESTER TROUTMAN, SR. and RICK FLYNNThis is a very special edition of the podcast RICK FLYNN PRESENTS as we celebrate the homegoing of one of the "Good Guys in Show Business," to say the very least,JELLYBEAN JOHNSON.As the drummer for THE TIME, Johnson worked alongside famed producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and recorded with and/or produced many notable artists including Alexander O'Neal, Cherrelle, New Edition, and Janet Jackson, with whom he had the 1990 No. 1 single, "Black Cat".Jellybean appeared in the PRINCE movies “Purple Rain” and Graffiti Bridge"Quote From Cincinnati DJ/Emcee RICK FLYNN on 11/25/2025:“I first met Jellybean Johnson in Cincinnati, Ohio during the PRINCE “Controversy Tour” in which I was an emcee. This tour featured the headliner PRINCE and, in the middle slot, was a Greater Cincinnati area band called “ZAPP FEATURING ROGER” and the then, largely unknown local Minneapolis band, known as MORRIS DAY and THE TIME which featured Jellybean Johnson on the drums. I was instantly impressed by the raw talent and showmanship of, not only Jellybean, but of the whole organization. This man was someone I was fortunate to have met and I have never forgotten the experience ever! The resulting popularity and huge success of THE TIME band to follow did not surprise me at all. They deserved it and I will forever miss “Bean” but I will never, ever forget the times I spent with him.” Thank-you MARTY for all you have done and my God bless you both!Thank-you to my brother and ZAPP BAND drummer LESTER TROUTMAN, SR. for your gracious contribution to this memorial show. i hope you all enjoy it as we proudly remember and pay tribute to what I call "One of the Good Guys in Show Business"JELLYBEAN JOHNSON!

//The Wire//2300Z September 17, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: MEDEVAC HELICOPTER SHOT IN ALABAMA. VANDALISM CONTINUES AT MEMORIALS AROUND USA. VEHICLE RAMMING ATTACK REPORTED AT FBI OFFICE IN PITTSBURGH.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-USA: Around the nation, various vandalism incidents continue at Charlie Kirk memorials. In North Carolina, a memorial was defaced at the UNC Wilmington campus, with the university making statements that passively endorsed the behavior and that no action will be taken. In Florida, the memorials painted at the "Graffiti Bridge" in Pensacola have also been heavily defaced over the past 24 hours, and another memorial was defaced in Arkansas as well.Pennsylvania: This afternoon multiple casualties were reported after police responded to a domestic disturbance call. 5x officers were wounded after a skirmish broke out at a rural property south of Spring Grove, with 3x officers remaining in critical condition as a result of the engagement. The suspect was recovered deceased at the scene.Overnight a vehicle ramming attack was reported at the FBI Field Office in Pittsburgh. Donald Henson was arrested after crashing his vehicle into the gates of the facility before fleeing the scene on foot. After a brief manhunt, the suspect was apprehended this morning.Analyst Comment: Though this was a targeted attack, this could be more of a case of mental illness rather than a more coherent attack. The suspect had painted statements on his vehicle, and had previously been reported for erratic behavior by family members.Arizona: A suspicious package was discovered outside the headquarters of Turning Point USA, which triggered a police response. EOD personnel were dispatched to examine the bag, which was determined to be a false-alarm.Alabama: This morning, one medevac helicopter was struck with effective Surface-to-Air Fire (SAFIRE) in the vicinity of County Road 51 in Autauga County. Local authorities arrested Peter Ellison for shooting a Life Flight helicopter in the process of responding to a medical emergency. Several rounds impacted the helicopter and one flight nurse was wounded during the attack.Washington D.C. - This morning FCC Chairman Brendan Carr made statements indicating an investigation into the ABC corporation's licensing stipulations, after comments were made during Jimmy Kimmel's show last night that falsely state that Tyler Robinson was a political conservative, and conducted the murder of Charlie Kirk as a result of conservative ideology.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: One of the follow-on effects of the Kirk assassination is the closer examination of platforms which have allowed open calls for violence over the years, with no repercussions. This is why the CEOs of Twitch, Discord, Reddit, and Steam have been requested to testify before Congress next month regarding the overwhelmingly one-sided policing of content on their platforms.Several influencers and content streamers have openly called for violence against political conservatives for many years now, breaking many of these own companies Terms and Conditions for content production. Nevertheless, the violent rhetoric has been allowed for so long, that it's shifted out of the realm of a free-speech issue, and into the territory of quite literal attack planning efforts. The White House (mostly AG Pam Bondi and President Trump himself) is doing an exceptionally poor job at describing this investigative effort, framing the issue without the nuance required to clearly state what is happening. However, as the violence from the political left has not decreased, but rather increased after Kirk's murder, this is a detail very important for risk assessment at a time where the threats are becoming increasingly more serious.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT

You'll hear your hosts trying to decipher the code that is the character of Aura as played by Ingrid Chavez, what we think works about this abstract musing written and directed by Prince and the one and only thing we truly didn't like in this odd little sequel that most people didn't see or give much credit.

The album that would bring grunge into the mainstream is Nevermind by Nirvana. While it was Nirvana's second album, it would be their first on a major label. It would also see the introduction of Dave Grohl to the band as drummer joining Krist Novoselic on bass, and the iconic and troubled Kurt Cobain who was front man, guitarist, and songwriter for the band.“Troubled” could be a good description of the album as well. While more polished than their debut album, the songs exhibit a raw emotion, often dark, disturbed, or alienated, but also containing some humor and self-deprecation. The tracks were more melodic than the first album as well, reflecting Cobain's influences - he was listening to groups like the Pixies and R.E.M. at the time that Nevermind was being recorded. The album was a surprising success both commercially and critically. It was nominated for three Grammy awards across two awards ceremonies. It hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 list in the U.S., hit number 2 on the Australian charts, and number 7 on the British charts.Nevermind was released in September 1991, and friend of the show John Lynch is featuring it as our album pick for January 1992 when it was on top of the charts, knocking off Michael Jackson's Dangerous. LithiumLithium is a drug used to fight depression and bi-polar disorder. The lyrics discuss a person trying to fight loss of relationships, wide mood swings and feelings, deciding that he needs to find God before he kills himself. The alteration between soft and loud sections would become known as emblematic of Nirvana's sound. PollyThis dark song was inspired by the abduction, torture, and rape of a 14 year-old girl in Tacoma, Washington. She escaped from her kidnapper at a gas station. Cobain wrote the lyrics from the perspective of the perpetrator. Former percussionist Chad Channing is the drummer on this piece.Something in the WayThis song was inspired by a four-month period of homelessness that Cobain experienced around his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. It is one of the few autobiographical songs Cobain wrote, as he more typically wrote lyrics inspired in stores from others. It is featured in the 2022 film, “The Batman.” Come As You AreThis hit single almost resulted in a lawsuit from a band called “The Killing Joke” which had a very similar chord structure. The lyrics are about the expectations people put on themselves and others, and it encourages people to be themselves. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television comedy series “In Living Color”This comedy variety production from the Wayan brothers would introduce the world to sketches “Men on Film, “Homey the Clown,” and “Fire Marshal Bill” which launched Jim Carrey's career. STAFF PICKS:There's No Other Way by BlurWayne starts us off with London based Blur exhibiting the “Manchester” sound. The song lyrics highlight the irritation the band felt at having to follow the Manchester trend at the behest of the record company. “You've taken the fun out of everything.” This song was Kurt Cobain's favorite song of the year from Britain.Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me by George Michael and Elton JohnRob brings us George Michael's live cover of Elton John's 1974 hit. John joins Michael on stage in the second half of the song during this performance in Chicago. They had originally performed the duet for Live Aid, and Michael liked it so much that he incorporated the cover into his show. The original version made it to number 2 in the U.S., and this cover made it to number 1.Diamonds and Pearls by Prince and the New Power GenerationBrian's staff pick is a love song. It is also the title track to Prince's album with the backing band which was originally named on the 1990 film “Graffiti Bridge.” The female voice in this song is performed by Rosie Gaines, who tragically suffered from an insulin overdose in 2009, and has experienced a number of diabetic issues over time.No Son of Mine by GenesisJohn Lynch features the final Genesis album with Phil Collins as lead singer, "We Can't Dance." The lyrics discuss domestic violence. It is about a man who is a monster to his family. The song describes a child who runs away from an abusive family situation, and is rejected by his father when he attempts reconciliation later on. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:New Recruit by Eric ClaptonThis instrumental track is from the motion picture "Rush."
