There is no “right” way to be a yoga teacher. But so often, we get caught up in ego and competition, trying to be the “best” or judging others for showing up in a way that's different than how you might teach… the truth is, there's enough room for all of us. If you show up in your own joy and with intent to truly serve your students, you'll always find success. People gravitate towards authenticity, and as long as you show up in a way that is joyful and truthful to you, the people that need your voice will always find you. There is so much we learn about ourselves when we become yoga teachers. Let's get out of competition mindset, and lift each other up. I did something new yesterday. I took a hip hop dance class. Doing something new and awkward and sometimes uncomfortable like taking a hip hop class was never something I felt I had the courage for before yoga. There is something that yoga has given me—or more accurately, that I have given myself through the process of self-discovery that yoga has put me on—that allows me to take up space, to play in something new, and to find pleasure in being present. In order to connect with the body and move freely, we must be present and there is immeasurable joy in that. I hope you know that your joy is worth it, and that you find the things that help you to be present within yourself. Sometimes being a leader means learning when to listen. In leadership roles, often we feel like we have to do it all alone, without the advice or help of the people around us but in truth, we are stronger in community. We are stronger together. We miss out on opportunities to grown when we keep things to ourselves or refuse to ask for help. Our communities lift us up, and create space and strength for each other as we go through the different seasons in life and make decisions to do things differently. Everywhere I turn, people are talking about menopause. Finally! This phase of life that used to be ignored, or even considered shameful, is now getting its long overdue spotlight as a worthy wellness topic and normal rite of passage for women.Oprah recently produced a special with a panel of experts on the subject of perimenopause and menopause. Naomi Watts has helped create a line of holistic beauty & wellness products for menopausal women. And Dr. Mary Claire Haver is inspiring, educating, and empowering thousands of women to navigate this stage of life with confidence by helping them create sustainable, healthy habits.Dr. Haver is on the Cracking Open podcast today, and I am so excited to share her wisdom with you all!She is a wife, mom, physician, and entrepreneur who has devoted her adult life to women's health. As a Board Certified OBGYN, Dr. Haver has delivered thousands of babies, completed thousands of well-woman exams, counseled patients, taught residents, and done everything an academic professor and OBGYN could do.As her patient population aged, Dr. Haver was overwhelmed with the number of complaints and concerns her patients had with weight gain while going through menopause. For years, she told her patients to eat less and exercise more. It wasn't until she, too, experienced the changes of menopause and mid-life weight gain that she realized this advice didn't work and ultimately led to her creating and developing her online program, The Galveston Diet, which currently has over 100,000 students and helps women reach their health and wellness goals through an anti-inflammatory approach to nutrition. She additionally became certified in Culinary Medicine in 2019, specializing in medical nutrition, opened the Mary Claire Wellness clinic in 2021, and released the book version of The Galveston Diet in January 2023. She is a leading voice in social media in the realm of menopause education and has over 2 million TikTok followers. In our conversation today, Dr. Haver is not only generous with her expert advice around perimenopause and menopause, but she also shares her own life experiences that have helped shape her and enabled her to compassionately relate to her clients and Galveston Diet participants. There are many incredible women who are leading the movement around normalizing the conversations and healthcare of menopause, and I am deeply grateful to Dr. Mary Claire Haver for being a dedicated, innovative, and extraordinary champion of perimenopausal and menopausal women everywhere. I'm so excited about what I'm about to share with you because I've created something I've never seen before and I know you're going to love it, too. I came to yoga from a weight-lifting background and have always loved the element of strength needed in flow. So, I created Yoga Strong—not this podcast, but a 3 month program where we will be combining yoga and strength. You don't need to super into yoga to do this, and you don't need to be super into strength-training either. This is something that isn't supposed to be easy, and that's okay. It's okay to be a beginner at something. Being a beginner should be celebrated, and I'm honored to be able to step in to that place with you. Let's keep doing the hard stuff together, because the hard stuff never gets any easier unless you just show up and give yourself permission to do it.The Yoga Strong Strength Training program is open this upcoming Monday, May 15th. There is a time for rest in life, but there is also a time to work hard, and to really hustle. As a child I played basketball, and in that sport I always too pride in being the first one down the court—always ready to shoot. I want to be the first one down the court now. If you really want something (and I really want something) there is work involved. I'm ready to work, to put in the effort it takes to make something grow, and I'm not afraid to own it. If you're in that season of hard work and growth too, let's all rush forwards together and be the first down the court, together. We don't grow alone.Work with me in Form & Flow: a small group mentorship HEREListen to the Sexy Sunday Podcast HEREBuy Bonnie a cup of tea at @Bonnie-WeeksSign up for Bonnie's sexy Sunday poetry prompts HEREConnect with Bonnie: Instagram, Email (hello@bonnieweeks.com), WebsiteThe music for this episode is Threads by The Light Meeting. What are you paying attention to? Is it the infinite process of coming to know yourself? Is it the way you might be feeling shame? It's so easy to take shame on in this life, the feeling of doing “this” wrong, of not belonging. When we feel shame, we feel small. We lose the essence of self and how we express ourselves in this world. We get to be the truest version of ourselves when we show up in bravery and curiosity, but curiosity and shame cannot coexist. So what might it feel like if we set shame down, if only for a moment, and share our feelings with each other, or with ourselves? There is no end to this game of being a human, so let's put shame aside. Let's be open and honest and curious. This infinite game we all get to play? It's beautiful.Listen to the Sexy Sunday Podcast HEREBuy Bonnie a cup of tea at @Bonnie-WeeksSign up for Bonnie's sexy Sunday poetry prompts HEREConnect with Bonnie: Instagram, Email (hello@bonnieweeks.com), WebsiteThe music for this episode is Threads by The Light Meeting. Our society has deemed things to be “woo-woo” if it gets off the beaten path that we are most comfortable with. To find our greatest and unique highest self, it is so important to be open to transforming the belief system that we have been indoctrinated into our whole life. That belief system has omitted unbelievable greatness that comes from infinite intelligence and spirituality, and being in touch with our highest self. Today's guest exemplifies the movement where we can marry spirituality and science and be testaments to the amazing things that can happen when we bring them together.Dana Sardano is the owner, resident artist, and intuitive at Ubuntu Fish Gallery. She is a published author, co-founder of Phenom Publishing, and co-founder/chief officer of curriculum and content at FindUniquelyU.com. In January 2015, Dana picked up a paintbrush for the first time since her childhood, and this was the catalyst for a major shift in her career. In June 2017, she decided to retire from her career in education in order to fully embrace an artist's life and to model to her daughters the importance of listening to your soul's purpose by following your bliss. She has authored several books for both adults and children and has never regretted her decision to take that leap of faith. In this episode, Dana walks us through her 10 Recommandments for Personal Empowerment, which come from her amazing book where she shares what she has learned from her personal life experiences, and offers insights on how to work through challenges and trauma. She offers a refreshing outlook on our personal struggles. We are never a victim of our circumstances. Everything is merely information and we can allow our internal guidance system to tell us how to navigate each situation. Alison hopes you will hone in on your own sense of being uniquely you and be open to the vast knowledge that Dana shares with you. How do you leave a thing in a generous way? These four mindset intentions help me navigate the times I say "no" to make more room for a "yes" while still honoring the way the thing changed me. Having just left a studio that I've taught at for a year and a half, a change that felt hard but right, I lean into abundance, gratitude, listening and ceremony (could also be called celebration) to find a well of peace as I move forward. This is not the podcast about figuring out timing or money, this is about how we talk to ourselves and move bravely forward with grace. EPISODE 281: Learning to say no to the people or things that don't serve you or your business gives you room to say yes to those that do.
