The healthier you are, the more successful you can be. It has been said that a person with good health has hope, and one with hope has everything. Health is our most valuable weapon in facing life's opportunities and struggles along with it. When addressing our health, we habitually focus on improving our physical body. Consequently, we often fail to remark on other aspects of our well-being. Hence, we must recognize that spiritual, emotional, and mental health is as important as physical health.    Moreover, there is an arising dilemma in athletics wherein athletes hardly consider the urge to ask for mental health support unless they are sick. They often experience pressure to maintain an impressive and resilient image which causes them to put their health on the back burner and concentrate more on building their image up. Thus, we must realize that we don't have to be unwell first to be able to ask for help because we can be doing well and still seek learning, growth, and insight that could help us to achieve wellness in all aspects. As our guest speaker believes, "When we address our health in a holistic and integrative way, we can enhance our ability to be effective and perform successfully."   Emily Perrin is the CEO and founder of Perrin Wellness and Performance, which was created to help people gain insight and address overall health issues that affect their ability to perform and succeed in whatever they do. Emily has masters in Clinical Social Work and is an LMSW residing in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a Mindfulness and Performance coach and spends most of her time working with Elite Athletes. Emily is a former DI soccer player and former DI soccer coach and a Certified Mindfulness Meditation Teacher, Certified Breath Work Coach, 200 Hour Registered Yoga Teacher, and Duke Certified Integrative Health Coach. Her passion is helping people holistically address their health and well-being, combining Mindfulness training, Meditation, Breath Work, and Yoga to help people navigate life and enhance their performance.   In this special episode with Emily Perrin, we will learn about the encouraging life of an excellent woman who has a passion for helping people, especially athletes, to address their health and well-being and to empower them to make sustainable and positive behavior changes to their health. Today's episode will encourage us to realize that health does not mean simply addressing the physical body. Still, it also involves every facet of our life. Be captivated by the story and passion of Emily as she shares with us how through life struggles, she embarked on a journey that led her to mindfulness, yoga, and inclusively addressing health.   "We don't have to be unwell to seek out help." – Emily Perrin   Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Introduction (00:00:41) Introducing our guest speaker, Emily Perrin. (00:31:00) Outro    Key Takeaways:     "The main way to connect with other people is by showing that we're human as well." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   "We have to realize that there's a lot of structural and larger macro-level change that has to happen to set our organizations, teams, and athletes up for success when it comes to mental health." – Emily Perrin   "Mental health awareness is starting to become more of the norm, and it's all good things, but we need to keep the ball rolling." – Emily Perrin   "As a human, we are incredibly complex, multifaceted creatures. We don't operate in sections." – Emily Perrin   "I don't talk about the mind and the body being different because they don't operate separately from each other." – Emily Perrin   "Mindfulness is a fantastic skill that allows an athlete to gain awareness and insight into their total wellness journey." – Emily Perrin   "If an athlete is not well both mind and body when all of the systems are working together, then they're going to have a hard time performing at their optimal place." – Emily Perrin   "You can be doing well and still want to learn, grow and gain insight about yourself and gain more tools and skills, and that's honestly where we can help athletes make a lot of progress." – Emily Perrin   "Athletes need rest and restoration. Yoga is a way to allow athletes that time and space for their mind and their body to regroup." – Emily Perrin   "Recovery is a very individual and unique practice. There is no two people are the same." – Emily Perrin   "Options are important when it comes to recovery." – Emily Perrin   "Mental health is not always something we can see, so we need to remember that the line of communication goes both ways." – Emily Perrin   Connect with Emily Perrin: Website: https://www.perrinwellnessperformance.com/ Facebook: https://web.facebook.com/perrinwellnessandperformance/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/PerrinWandP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/emilyperrinlmsw/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@emilyperrinlmsw/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/emily-perrin-97a26762/ Recovery EBOOK: https://www.perrinwellnessperformance.com/free-e-book-recover   Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com   This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. How much of your life do you live in an overwhelmed state? Are you already beginning to get nervous for the extra stress of the upcoming holidays? If you tend to feel anxious, overwhelmed, or stressed, and are already getting worried about the holidays - today's episode is a must-listen! In Kumbay'all episode 48 Amanda has a wonderful conversation with trauma-sensitive movement specialist Bree Hibbs-Kenny, where they discuss: - The signs to look for to let you know that your body is getting anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed - Why it's important to check in with these feelings and manage our stress - What you can do to help combat holiday stress - How having an embodiment practice can make a difference in your stress level About Bree: As a ballet-trained performance artist, Bree Hibbs-Kenny has been teaching both adults and children to connect with their own bodies through dance, theater, and yoga for more than 16 years. Bree has been passionate about embodiment – helping people connect with and be inside their own body – throughout her career. Bree was first introduced to yoga 20 years ago, but it wasn't until she suffered an ischemic stroke in 2013 and her world was turned upside down that she realized how transformative yoga could be. She practiced yoga during her recovery because she hoped that a ‘bottom up' approach of taking care of her body first would help the other areas of her life. Not only did her yoga practice help her recover from the stroke and accompanying depression, it ignited her desire to study trauma and movement. Through the yogic experience, Bree uncovered that her physical body has a direct connection with her nervous system and psychological well-being. Now her primary focus is helping people with embodiment and empowerment through movement sessions. Bree received her 200-Hour Registered Yoga Teacher certification in 2018. Shortly afterwards she trained with The Center for Trauma and Embodiment at Justice Resource Institute in Brookline, Massachusetts and completed her Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator certification there. She completed the Mama Tree Prenatal Yoga Training and (as of Oct 2022) is currently working to complete the Somatic Stress Release™ certificate. Bree offers movement sessions for the overwhelmed body both virtually and in-person at Renew Pelvic Health in Atlanta, GA. Katie is a KCMO area yoga instructor with a passion for astrology, philosophy, and all things meta-physical. She learned to love her body again through yoga after a challenging two year stint in the world of competitive fitness. Her passion for yoga led her to self-study on a three week solo-adventure to Bali and eventually to Asheville, North Carolina where she received her 200 Hour Registered Yoga Teacher certification in 2017 at the Asheville Yoga Center. With a background in body-building and physical fitness she understands both the anatomy of the body and the societal pressures put on it. She teaches both vinyasa style yoga, infusing the energetics of astrology into each class, as well as the more passive “yin yoga” in which she received additional certification in 2019. She teaches a style of yoga that focuses on cultivating a loving and compassionate conversation with the body. The goal in every class, whether active or passive, is to become present with the breath. She believes that it is with the breath that we connect through the body and to the spirit.  You can find Katie teaching mostly online these days with offerings such as yin yoga, astrology-themed flows and seasonal yoga malas through True Love Yoga and Hagoyah. You can find her in person one day a week, socially distanced and masked on the mat on Saturday mornings at Hagoyah! She also offers a once monthly “Restore and Release,” a monthly self-care reset, via her own platform! To learn more about Katie and her offerings you can connect with her on social media @kbkcyoga or through her website kbkc.yoga So you know she's legit: Katie Brown is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance, which acknowledges the completion of a yoga teacher training with a Registered Yoga School (RYS).

A childhood fraught with daily violence, neighbors with gunshot wounds, street riots and so many other traumatic events, Rosie Acosta quickly became immune to her toxic environment. She knew nothing else, this was her norm. However, one day through the power of taking pause, taking a breath and instilling mindfulness into her present she was able to radically change the course of her existence. Rosie chose to set herself on a path to become a yoga practitioner to help others live a life full of health, wellness and overall adopting a "radically loved" paradigm. In this episode, Rosie shares with us exactly HOW and WHY we all should shift our focus to the power of NOW. How to bring a greater sense of awareness into our lives to better process everything from common daily stressors (work, relationships, fatigue, etc.) to working through significant traumatic events (as she does with Afghanistan war veterans suffering from PTSD). In one word - MINDFULNESS. Currently on the road all across America for Yoga Journal's "LIVE BE YOGA" tour, Rosie is bringing mindfulness to the masses. She hosts and incredible podcast called "Radically Loved" where you can actually hear her interview me, available the same time as this episode of EF Radio can be heard.
