Every year, millions of vacation days are rendered worthless to the employees who earned them. As employees accrue vacation time, the value of that time sits as a liability on a balance sheet and that number can drastically increase over time. While the first option for employees should be to use all their paid time off, the next best solution is to gain value from a benefit that would otherwise expire. Joining Bill Banham on the show this time is Rob Whalen, CEO & Co-founder at BNFT (formerly PTO Exchange), the first benefits platform that allows employees to self-direct the value of their unused paid time off (PTO) for other needs and causes. About Rob WhalenRob is a serial entrepreneur who has over 25 years of experience selling and developing software and hardware products. While building the company, Rob and his co-founder, Todd Lucas, found their mission was to enable flexibility in those benefits that employees earned but could not utilize. They also discovered that by enabling this capability and accountability, BNFT created equity and inclusion for workers to be compensated for their accrued productivity - creating a better benefit.About BNFT (PTO Exchange)BNFT is a comprehensive benefits platform for employees to unlock the full flexibility and value of their total rewards while providing HR teams with a low-cost and easy-to-use tool. PTO Exchange and LPA Exchange are powered by BNFT, which brings innovative solutions via one platform. Dr. Brandi Jackson, chief behavioral health officer at Howard Brown Health, and Kevin Dedner, CEO and founder of Hurdle, join KP in this episode of the InOn Health podcast. Dr. Jackson and Kevin address the structure of the mental healthcare system in the United States. They elaborate how the current system lacks effective therapeutic alliance for people of color in the U.S, resulting in poor provider fits and patients terminating therapy prematurely. For example, 50% of Black Americans terminate therapy sessions prematurely, compared to 33% for other general populations. Dr. Jackson and Kevin explain this dynamic is due to a lack of education in the training process, leaving psychiatrists and clinical psychologists unprepared to help treat diverse populations. Hurdle is a mental healthcare platform focused on delivering culturally intentional mental healthcare, consisting of virtual therapy services and self-mastery tools. To combat barriers of the current mental healthcare system, Hurdle trains its providers with evidence-based techniques dedicated to developing cultural humility and culture responsiveness. Kevin explains how this approach emphasizes listen more and talk less, improving therapeutic alliance and provider fits for patients. This foundation of care enables a safe space for patients, allowing providers to assess what prevents patients from showing up fully to each session and removing those barriers. Cultural humility and responsiveness have demonstrated a reduction in terminating therapy prematurely.Kevin discusses the hypothesis that self-care is a pathway to teletherapy. As people dedicate time to healing and normalize new habits, they are more likely to transition more easily into therapy. Ultimately, everyone wants their experiences, family history, and culture to be honored across all areas of life, especially in therapy sessions. Dr. Jackson is the co-founder of The Institute of Antiracism in Medicine. This organization trains clinicians to recognize implicit biases by providing tools to serve as advocates for their patients, understanding how to engage in the topic of racism, and ultimately eliminating racism from the healthcare system. A discussion with Dr. Maya Green, regional medical director for communities on the south and west side of Chicago at Howard Brown Health, who shares highlights from a recent webinar: “Black and LGBTQ+: At the intersection of race, sexual orientation and gender identity,” and shares her own experience in treating Black and LGBTQ+ patients.
Welcome to the second episode in what is now titled “South Side Sox Estrogen Power Hour,” an all-White Sox, estrogen-based podcast to focused on the intersection of inclusivity in baseball and sports at large. Occasionally, coverage includes how the White Sox can monetize major life events (primarily funerals). In this episode, tune in as the team discusses: Welcome Janice: A tripod becomes a rickety but free-standing chair, as Janice Scurio joins the Estrogen Power Hour. Lefties, Righties, Bunting — Fact or Myth?: Have you heard that White Sox crush lefties? The team discusses facts and myths about lefties vs. righties. Also, Colleen talks more about bunting, and she is ready for folks to stop trying to explain things to her. Sleeping with The Enemy: Waddle and Silvy of ESPN 1000, the flagship White Sox radio station, think the Chicago Cubs are the feel-good story of the year, but the group rolls unrolls a long sheath of papyrus to reveal a long list of reasons Waddle and Silvy are wrong. Pride in the MLB: White Sox social media shared an image featuring Liam Hendriks to acknowledge and celebrate Pride Month. Although this is a step forward for in terms of primarily male-dominated sports in acknowledging the LGBTIQA+ community, how can organizations and the MLB do better? In Chicago, organizations like Center on Halsted and Howard Brown Health on the North Side and the Brave Space Alliance on the South Side support LGBTIQA+ communities and could use some local love and support. Leave Naomi Osaka Alone: Recently, Naomi Osaka declined media interviews to protect her mental health, which resulted in a $15,000 fine and outrage from, primarily, older white guys. This treatment is a double standard. Surprise! Baseball Players Are Humans: It is no secret that Yermín Mercedes is not having the best month. However, some shock and surprise is undue. The crew discusses why fans should expect slumps and be patient, especially for players with longer contracts. Goodbye, Bad Guys! Mickey Callaway and Marcell Ozuna are off the job, thanks in no part to their abuse of women. How will organizations continue to address abusive coaches and players? How can we expect baseball to truly be “for all” when crimes like these go unchecked? Who Do Sox Fans Want to Dump This Week?: Eaton? Abreu? Grandal? Mercedes? García? Lamb? Mendick? Who stands where in the great debate of dumpage? Keelin Forgets Nomar Mazara's Last Name: This is more of a correction that no one will probably read. More Death Stuff: Concession embalmments. B. is here to tell you that does not fly. (Also, we will note, that lady was wrong: B. is thriving.) In this episode, we talk to B. Pagels-Minor, who is a Black, nonbinary product manager based out of Silicon Valley who also serves on the board of Howard Brown Health, a nonprofit health organization serving the LGBTQ+ community. They are also planning to have a baby soon, so we touch on SO many topics for this episode, from why nonprofits are so important and how strict their mentality should be around hiring effective workers compared to for-profit companies, how not to have your kid turn out to be an asshole, the problems nonbinary folks encounter with healthcare providers, their experience with coming out to their Southern black parents, you name it. Many of the themes in this episode tie back in with topics that have been on our minds recently, from diversity in hiring, to navigating class to activism. This is one of the most far-ranging conversations we have had in a while. If you liked our entrepreneurship episode, where we basically talk about everything under the sun, you're going to like this episode too. Links: B. This week we sit down with Myles, a southern queer currently living in the Windy City. And let us just say- their southern accent DOES NOT disappoint, nor does this episode. We talk about identifying as nonbinary and how that relates to navigating pronouns, seeking medical treatment and top surgery. Myles elaborates on the differences in seeking HRT while in the rural south, compared to big city Chicago, and how finding Camp Gender Bender was positively life altering for them. They also discuss being on hormones and how that has affected them not only physically, but mentally as well and how those changes have related to his current relationships. Fun fact- C and Myles not only access HRT through the same LGBTQ+ center (Howard Brown Health in Chicago) but they also had the same top surgeon (Alison Shore)! Comments? Questions? Whatever?
