We put a pin in Daimon's bizarre saga with The Possessor for a Bill Mantlo-penned one-and-done with The Thing in the nearby Arizonan Old West ghost town of Lawless, where Ben Grimm has been sent by Reed Richards on New Year's Eve to investigate some needle-burying energy readings. Enjoy! SYNOPSIS (courtesty of Wiki): Knocked into the Thames River by a bomb blast, the Thing saves Spider-Woman and brings her to shore. Indebted to him, she tells him of her forced servitude in Hydra and agrees to help him rescue Alicia. While the two criminals continue to search for their lost treasure -- which turns out to be stolen from British Treasury during World War II -- They have almost completed collecting the plates needed to assemble a map pointing out the location of the treasure. Meanwhile, Hyrda exposes Alicia to the serum they synthesized based on Spider-Woman and mutates her into a woman-spider creature, restoring her sight technologically. Ordering her to destroy the Thing and Spider-Woman, Alicia attacks them and their battle takes them across the city of London, finally ending in a department store where the Alicia-creature catches Ben in a spider-web. As Ben and Spider-Woman continue to battle the spider-mutated Alicia Masters, the two criminals searching for the long lost stolen treasure of World War II. They find the treasure they sought, however, when they open the treasure chest, they find themselves sucked into it by mystical forces. As the battle between Ben, Spider-Woman, and Alicia rages on, Ben smashes the control module on her forehead. Losing their ability to control Alicia thanks to the destruction of this device, the Hydra agent in charge of this mission is ordered killed by the Supreme Hydra for his failure. Alicia has the two heroes on the ropes until the Invisible Girl arrives. Using her invisible force fields, Sue manages to cut off Alicia's oxygen supply until she passes out. While Dr. Kort tries to restore Alicia back to normal, Thing wanders around London brooding. To make Ben feel worse, the people of London who originally treated him with celebrity when he first arrived are now treating him as a monster following the battle. Sue tracks down Ben and tells her that Alicia is calling out to him, and so they return to Kort's lab just as Alicia is being transformed back to normal.normal. Taking a trip to Stonehenge, Alicia and the Thing are secretly followed by Spider-Woman. Meanwhile, the chest uncovered by thieves looking for lost World War II treasure unleash a mystical force. Arriving at Stonehenge, Thing and Alicia are confronted by four elemental demons: Fire, Aero, Hydro, and Mud. Their appearance forces Spider-Woman to reveal herself and defend Ben and Alicia. The trio is all transported below Stonehenge where they find that all the tourists have been transported to and are being kept as prisoners. The elementals explain that they were summoned to capture Mordred the mystic for Merlin, who has recently been revived in modern times. They have vowed to capture Mordred even if it means the destruction of the Earth. As the elementals are explaining their mission, Ben and Spider-Woman attack them but prove unable to make any lasting damage against them. When all seems lost, Mordred arrives to answer the elementals challenge. While Mordred and Spider-Woman battle the elementals, Ben goes looking for Alicia. Mordred transports himself, the elementals, and Spider-Woman back to the surface where Mordred uses his magic to convince the elementals to fight each other. Each opposing element pitted against each other and being destroyed. After the battle, Mordred transports everyone back to the surface and erases the tourist's memories of the experience. Afterward, Ben and Alicia depart leaving Mordred to take Spider-Woman under his arm and take her on as an apprentice. VENOM BLASTS (things to look out for in episode)!! Episode 71. James B and Eddie knock out three Marvel Team-Ups in less time than many podcasts can even complete their introduction. One day in a fit of jealousy, they were fighting and the radioactive clay exploded and blinded that child, Alicia Masters. Will the Puppet Master restore her vision? (4:11) “The Mighty Army of the Moleman” Spidey is swinging through the city when he hears a cry for help. Why is Thor down in the sewers and will he help Spider-Man? (7:20) Eddie learns when it comes to delivery services there are a lot of choices but there is a new sponsor better than the rest. Come with us to Yancy Street as we drill down on BEN GRIMM, THE THING! Why does a man so smart tawk like dis? Listen now to find out! Intro Upcoming interview with Allen & Will from Pocus Hocus - giveaway on IG - follow us there for more info Background (3:00) Ben Grimm (The Thing) created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in The Fantastic Four #1 (Nov. 1961) Ben Grimm is a pilot and college friend of Reed Richards While flying an experimental rocketship with Richards, Richards' girlfriend Sue Storm, and Sue's brother Johnny aboard, the ship is bombarded with cosmic rays, which irreversibly alter all four travelers - Ben's body becomes covered in an orange, rocky hide - he dubs himself the Thing Reed attempts several times to reverse his transformation, but is unable to make it permanent - Ben does revert back to human on occasion though (largely through magical means) Had a starring role in Marvel Two-in-One alongside various heroes Stays on Battleworld after Secret Wars, because the planet provides him the ability to change at will - She-Hulk joins the FF in his stead, until he returns after defeating an evil version of himself Upon returning, he discovers that his on-again/off-again love Alicia Masters is dating Johnny Storm - this Alicia is later revealed to be a Skrull named Lyja #BecauseComics Ben and Sharon Ventura are hit with cosmic rays - Sharon becomes She-Thing, while Ben becomes more powerful and rocky Recurring stories for Ben involve the Yancy Street gang where he grew up - at various points they've been rivals and partners, with Ben even leading the gang at one point during his earlier years Joins the New Avengers after Seige, serving on both teams simultaneously Recently married Alicia, although their honeymoon was interrupted by a rampaging Hulk (under the control of the Puppet Master, Alicia's father) Issues (10:07) Insecurity and self-loathing. It's been his chief, most famous character-defining trait since his inception. He's horrified by his physical appearance and thinks it makes him a monster both inside and out. He's just one of those people that doesn't feel like he deserves anything good in life no matter how much he does as a hero. As such, he's often at the root of sabotaging his own happiness, particularly in his romantic relationships. He thinks that by pushing the people closest to him away, he's protecting them from disappointment and pain, but -- as I had to learn in my early 20s -- that's something people just do instinctively when they think very little of themselves. "Life Story" would go into this a little deeper and we'd learn he was a lot like this before he became the Thing. The war keeps changing thanks to Marvel's sliding timescale, but he's not particularly proud of the things he did overseas in the Marines, and just doesn't generally feel like he's someone worthy of being loved. He also frequently turns down cures to his condition, making up some dumb excuse about the team needing him or another. Inadequacy; always feeling second best. This was way more prevalent in the Lee/Kirby years, but man, the fact that there are heroes like Thor and the Silver Surfer in the world, who are canonically stronger than he is but look like classic art masterpieces come to life just eats at him. And of course, there's the Hulk. Oh boy, he does not like being compared with the Hulk. His whole "I've got more heart than anyone else" thing and relying on willpower to carry him through fights is great for storytelling, but he's not top tier in strength in the Marvel universe, and he's well aware of the fact. (19:08) Playing dumb, for...some reason. Ben is not dumb muscle. Not even close. You don't get to be a test pilot in any branch of the military or an astronaut in NASA without being several standard deviations above average intelligence. The man has multiple advanced degrees in engineering and can fix pretty much anything mechanical or electrical that breaks down, even when it's a one of a kind invention of Reed's. He can instinctively pilot just about any vehicle he comes across, even if it's alien and he has no idea how it works. But for whatever reason, he seems to purposely cultivate an image of being the team's dumb guy with his gruff, matter-of-fact, Lower East Side manner of speaking. With his enemies, I get it. It's useful to be underestimated. But among friends and other superheroes, where there's no need for it? I don't get it. (29:29) Break (42:15) Plugs for BetterHelp, Into the Knight, and Jeremy Whitley Treatment - theme is hard outer shell/rough edges (43:54) In-universe - Being comfortable with his own skin Out of universe - (47:52) Skit (55:40) Hello Mr. Thing, I'm Dr. Issues. - Aw please, call me Ben. Alright Ben, how are you doing today? - Well doc, I got this crick in my neck that I just can't seem ta *interrupting* whoa, whoa, I'm not that kind of doctor. -I'm just messin with ya. Sheesh, I heard you could take a joke. *laughs* of course, of course. I just didn't expect that from the start. Way to throw me off. -No harm, right? I don't get a chance ta talk to someone like you one on one. People like you just run away from an orange pile o' rocks. I don't condone that kind of self-talk. Did I say a word when you came in other than to greet you? I meant it. -Come ahhhhhhn…not even a little reaction? Well, I'm human, so…wait, are you fishing for me to say something? -Maybe, what's it to ya? *pause* So you wanted to come across as one of the guys, but then you had to point out what makes you different. I'm perplexed already. -I get that a lot. Gotta admit, seein' an orange guy with a fugly mug don't do favors with subtlety. I ain't Shakespeare ya know. There you go again…in record time, you manage to drop more insults about yourself. -You ain't coming across as warm and fuzzy, either, pal. I'm sorry…it's just…I get defensive with patients because I've heard my fair share of depressed talk, and my gut is to fight it, tooth and nail. You, just like everyone else, are worthy of love and respect. Even if you don't have hope for that, I'll have it for you. -*sarcastic* Well golly gee, doesn't that make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I ain't a sad sack case, doc. I'm acknowledging your defense mechanisms because they're so common…more than you know. -Well, sometimes the best defense is a strong offense. That's what people come to expect. I don't have expectations. I just have a questioning attitude. I don't want to bombard you with too much too quickly, but you're going to have to touch on some things that you may not want to really talk about at the moment. -Like what? Well, since you led with it, let's start with the elephant in the room. How do you feel about your appearance? -It's there. *pause* Go on… -Look, I dropped the hints, the jokes, you know the answer, all right? I hate it. Hate it, hate it, hate it. But so what? Bad cards, man. Bad cards. Ya gotta make the best of it. And lucky for me, Alicia happens ta like it. I don't know what she… I was gonna say I don't know what she sees in me, but she's blind, so she can't see anything in me hehehe. Then what does she love about you? - Ta be honest, some days I don't know. It's one of the great mysteries of life. But I feel lucky just to know her, and the fact that she coulda been wit any guy and she picked me… well, some days that's what it takes ta get me outta bed in the morning. I don't think you'll appreciate it as much coming from me, but your personality as a whole shines through whatever physical form you may have. You have gravitas -Gravi…wha? Come on, don't get fancy on me. You'll start soundin like Stretch. He starts talking over ya head, and I get a cure for insomnia. I'm just a plain ol' guy tryin ta make it through the day. You're really entrenched in this style, huh? -You makin fun a how I talk? NO! I mean, you downplay everything about yourself, except the one thin…PART, that everyone can see. Is it to avoid attention? Consequences? What? -Look, I'm not into all sorts of psychobabble, but think about what you're sayin. I get to be wit some really good people. Susie is the most selfless person you'll ever meet. Flame Boy grinds my gears, but I'll be damned, his intensity has saved our ass a million times. Then you got the genius that makes the whole shebang go. Who am I to them, huh? Who am I to anybody? This may sound dumb to say, but…forget for a split second who you are to them. Who are you…to YOU? -*pause* That's hard, doc. That's not how life is supposed to be. What do you mean? -You keep pushin me ta make some kinda breakthrough, and all I'm getting is vapor cone. I'm sorry, what? - Vapor cone is where an object traveling at hypersonic or supersonic speeds reduces the air pressure immediately surrounding itself. That drop in air pressure creates a corresponding drop in temperature. If the air is saturated with water, and the drop in temperature goes below the saturation temperature, it will form an instantaneous cloud around the object, because the air pressure drop is so sudden that the water can't move out of the way. Ya see it in planes when they hit Mach 1. *pause* Thank you for teaching me something new….especially something that's outside of my particular reading. That was…BEYOND unexpected. -*sarcastic* Oh, ya make me blush. Take a compliment, please! You just showed more of yourself than I expected in one session. You managed to take a chance. You are more than you let on. I'm being a bit selfish when I say your goal should be to educate naive people like me in the areas you shine at. Don't shy away, I'm practically begging you. The more you do it, the more comfortable you'll be with that part of yourself. - Look, Doc, the truth is, I know what I bring ta the table. Reed's the brains, Susie's the heart, and Johnny's the mouth. Someone's gotta be the muscle. And yeah, I know I can come off a little rough around the edges, literally an' figuratively. But there's nothing wrong wit' being what people expect of ya, as long as yer ok wit it. And for all my talk, I gotta lotta friends. A lotta people who'd lay down their lives, and many have, ta save my hide. So I'm grateful every day for every single one of ‘em. It's gotten me this far, I don't see any reason ta rock the boat now. Fair enough. Just be mindful that…literally and figuratively, you're going to make waves with everyone you meet because you're a big orange rock.. You can control the impact. - Hardy har har. I guess you can make a joke after all. It's a joke, even if it's not a fantastic one. - Aw jeez… Ending (62:32) Recommended reading: Literally any Fantastic Four run Next episodes: Pocus Hocus interview, Alex Summers, Echo Plugs for social References: Here's Looking At You, Kid - Casablanca - Anthony (17:52) Apple Podcasts: here Google Play: here Stitcher: here TuneIn: here iHeartRadio: here Spotify: here Twitter Facebook Patreon TeePublic Discord
In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the threat that is “the Hulk”. What is the Hulk? Is he a human turned into a monster, or a monster with human-like intelligence? Where did he come from? Was he created by the US military? If it takes the entire Fantastic Four AND the Avengers to stop him, how will we protect ourselves from the Hulk in the future? In these issues:Fantastic Four #25Reed Richards is working on a formula to reverse Ben Grimm's transformation into the Thing, although Ben is reluctant to try the formula as he feels that his girlfriend, the blind sculptor Alicia Masters, loves him as the Thing. Meanwhile, the Hulk is being hunted by the Avengers, and rather than hide, the Hulk decides to take the fight to the Avengers and destroy them. The Hulk rampages through New York City to get the Avengers' attention, which leads to the Fantastic Four taking him on. The Hulk and the Thing engage in a thrilling fight throughout the city, and into the ocean, leaving the Thing broken and defeated and the Hulk calling out the Avengers.Fantastic Four #26Ben “The Thing” Grimm continues to fight the Hulk, with the Army looking on. His teammate, Reed “Mr. Fantastic” Richards, is too sick to join the fight, although Johnny “the Human Torch” Storm, while banged up from his earlier encounter with the Hulk, rejoins the battle. The Hulk more than holds his own against Ben and Johnny, leading the Army to fire a missile at the Hulk, only to see him catch it and throw it into the sky. Finally, the Avengers show up on the scene, and the Hulk takes them on. The Fantastic Four re-engage the Hulk too, leading to these two superhero teams fighting the Hulk at once. The Hulk is finally chased away by the ants that Giant-Man has ordered to race all over him, causing them to itch so much that he is entirely distracted, allowing his young friend Rick Jones to pop an emergency gamma-ray treated capsule into his mouth, turning the Hulk back to Bruce Banner. And so endeth the greatest fight in Marvel history. This episode takes place:After the Hulk has battled the Fantastic Four and the Avengers at the same time, and escaped.Assumed before the next episode:People are wondering if anyone can take the Hulk down. In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the impersonation of Thor by Mr. Hyde. We believe Thor because he has built up credibility and reputation over time. But how long are we going to accept these excuses or explanations for criminal behavior? Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm do NOT have Thor's credibility, and yet they are claiming that they are not responsible for their fight (with each other) which destroyed not insignificant parts of the city because they were “mind controlled”. Are we expected to believe this as well? Also, Thor's impersonator and the Fantastic Four's mind controller have escaped and are still at large. Should that factor into our decisions on credibility? In these issues:Journey into Mystery #100The public is unhappy with Thor, and the police actually fire their guns at him. Thor figures out that Mr. Hyde has been impersonating him while committing crimes. Thor then transforms to his mortal guise of Dr. Donald Blake, and as Dr. Blake, he takes his nurse Jane Foster out for dinner. Mr. Hyde kidnaps Donald and Jane, ties Donald up, and then takes Jane with him to steal a submarine. Donald transforms to Thor and battles Dr. Hyde, although Dr. Hyde escapes. The police then tell Thor that they had figured out that Mr. Hyde was impersonating him.Strange Tales #116The Puppet Master is back. He creates a Human Torch puppet and controls him to hit on his stepdaughter Alicia Masters, who is the Thing's girlfriend. The Torch and the Thing fight, causing serious property damage in the city. Alicia figures out that her stepfather is behind the mayhem and intervenes, causing the Puppet Master to lose focus and thus control over the Torch, which causes the Torch to allow a flame fall out of the sky and burn the Torch puppet that the Puppet Master was using.Assumed before the next episode:The public has forgiven Thor but are not too sure about the Human Torch and the Thing. This episode takes place:After Mr. Hyde and the Puppet Master have been defeated. In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the most powerful super-powered villain encountered so far, the Molecule Man, can rearrange molecules and everything is made of molecules. After defeating the Fantastic Four in public, Reed Richards claims that his team defeated the villain in secret. How was a man so powerful defeated? Was he killed? If not, how can a man who can turn a jail cell into a rose garden being held against his will? Does the Molecule Man have any constitutional rights? And if not, where do we draw the line on who the Fantastic Four or the government are allowed to “deal with” extra-legally?In this issue:The Fantastic Four respond to a threat in the middle of New York City, which turns out to be a gateway to the dimension occupied by the Watcher, a mysterious alien whom we will learn more about as this series continues, but who for the purposes of this issue you should know simply observes but does not interfere. The Watcher explains that an Earthling known as the Molecule Man, who was accidentally created due to a mistake with atomic devices, poses an existential threat to the multiverse. Imbued with his powers to change molecules at his whim, the Molecule Man has been settling petty scores, and the Watcher is concerned that he will not stop until he destroys the solar system and beyond. The Fantastic Four return to Earth and take on the Molecule Man, who has already tried to take over the Earth. They do battle, but the Molecule Man comes out on top. He is nigh omnipotent, and has no problem demonstrating his amazing powers. All seems lost until the Thing's girlfriend, the blind sculptor Alicia Masters, tricks the Molecule Man into believing that he cannot control the molecules in clay statues that Alicia has created of the Fantastic Four. It turns out that they are not statutes but in fact the Fantastic Four, covered in clay. The Watcher then re-enters the picture and spirits the Molecule Man away, rationalizing that because the Fantastic Four, at that very moment, technically defeated the Molecule Man, he can intercede and remove the Molecule Man from the equation.Assumed before the next episode:People wonder what happened to the supremely powerful Molecule Man.This episode takes place:After the Molecule Man disappears. Intro New #BecauseComics moment per episode Background (2:58) Crystalia Amaquelin created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four #45 (Dec. 1965) She is unique among Marvel characters in that she has been a member of the Fantastic Four, Avengers, and Inhumans, as well as tangentially related to the X-Men Crystal is a member of the Inhuman Royal Family, sister to Queen Medusa, with the ability to control the elements She first encountered the Fantastic Four on the run from the Seeker, who wanted to destroy the Royal Family - saved by Johnny Storm, the two quickly fell in love When Sue Storm Richards was pregnant with Franklin and left the team, Crystal served as her replacement Left the team after discovering that her stay on Earth was poisoning her, as her Inhuman body could not handle the Earth's atmosphere, and she returned to Attilan, breaking up with Johnny In the process of Lockjaw teleporting her home, she encountered Quicksilver, who was injured battling Sentinels - she brought him home to the Great Refuge to help him recover, and over time they fell in love and announced their marriage They had a baby girl, Luna, who exhibited no powers - Crystal forced Pietro to agree that Luna would grow up normally Pietro's temper grates on Crystal, and she has an affair with Wanda & Vision's realtor, a human named Norman Webster - Norman ends the affair when he realizes Crystal is married, and Pietro initially refuses to attempt reconciliation She attempted to renew her relationship with Johnny, but she found he was married to Alicia Masters (actually a Skrull in disguise #BecauseComics), and when an Inhuman crisis endangered the entire family, she and Pietro eventually reconciled Joined the Avengers, and moved into the mansion with Luna and her nanny, Marilla During her tenure, she became close with Dane Whitman, the Black Knight, who was himself the target of Sersi's affections, all while Crystal and Pietro were working on reestablishing their relationship - this love quadrangle created many difficult situations, until Dane & Sersi were sent to another dimension After Heroes Reborn, Crystal and Pietro were reunited, but Dane also returned to the universe, and when Dane and Pietro later fought over Crystal, she left them both to return to Attilan to think After House of M, Pietro stole Terrigen Mists and exposed Luna, granting her powers - this act led to Black Bolt annulling the marriage She was then betrothed to Ronan (by Medusa) as part of an alliance between the Inhumans and the Kree - the marriage was quickly ended, however, as a deal was struck with Black Bolt and the Supreme Intelligence Made an Inhuman ambassador by Queen Medusa, leads the Royal Inhuman Diplomatic Mission Issues (9:10) Jeanine: Stepping away from royal family In the shadow of her older sister (19:17) Difficulty of being a super parent (25:12) Break (30:44) Plugs for BetterHelp, Scotch N Sports, and Al Ewing Treatment (32:42) In-universe - Bring in Captain Planet as a mentor Out of universe - Focus on emotional impact of making those important decisions (35:14) Skit (41:52) Doc: Hello Crystal, I'm Dr. Issues. Crystal: Hi Doctor. D: Thank you for meeting with me. I'm a little sad to see Luna's not here, though. C: She's with my family. For better or worse I have no shortage of babysitters. It helps to know so many folks with superpowers. D: Yes, you do have quite the list of friends and colleagues. C: Which is one of the things I wanted to talk to you about. D: OK, shoot. C: I've been an Avenger, a member of the Fantastic Four, one of the Inhuman Royal Family, and affiliated with the X-Men. I hardly have any peers who have those kinds of connections. And my powerset means I can control all of the elements. Yet I always feel like I'm not taken seriously enough. I'm either Medusa's kid sister, or worse yet Pietro's ex. D: So your primary issue is that of establishing an identity separate from those around you? C: Yes, exactly! D: I see. Well, my first thing I want to make clear is that being part of these groups isn't necessarily a bad thing, and- C: Oh I'm well aware, and I apologize if it came across as such. I'm proud to be included in these rosters. The relationships I've built over the years mean the world to me, and I wouldn't trade them for anything. It's just… that's not *all* of who I am. D: That's certainly frustrating, and I see why- C: And that's what few people understand. Pietro understood that...understands that? I don't know...we've gone back and forth so many times. He's so impulsive. I want him to slow down sometimes, but that's not who he is, and then that makes me realize that I wasn't understanding him...oh, it burns me up inside! *flame sound effect* D: Relationships that are frayed don't have to be completely incinerated...like you just did to that insurance form. Can we - C: Oh no! I didn't mean to take it out on your possessions! That reminds me of when I talk to Johnny. It's weird. We work as great friends, but I sometimes go down a ‘what-if' rabbit hole if I had built something special with him. But that's not fair to him either. My mind is a tornado right now *wind noises* D: I see...how demonstrative. *clearly frustrated* I'll just restack those files a bit later. It sounds like you have tied so many parts of who you are to other people, that it even becomes tiresome for you to differentiate your motivations from those around you. How do you cope with that? C: I make time for myself. At least, I used to. I'm not an absentee parent. Luna comes first. When I get a chance like this, I seem to be out of sorts. *water effects gently throughout her speech* I get flooded with thoughts of how she's doing, if I'm missing something, if I should have pushed for more co-parenting, If I'm pawning her off too much. Am I making any sense? D: *barely hiding his frustration* I am awash with inspiration on how to help you...and so are my shoes. The anxiety of parenting never goes away, but rest assured that one of the best things you can show your child is letting them face some of their own challenges. C: *angry* Challenges?! She was kidnapped before! Caring for Lockjaw is a challenge! No, I won't be a helicopter parent, but do you know what it's like to lose the most important thing to your soul? You question reality. *earthquake effects* The ground you walk on might as well swallow you whole. Everyone judges you left and right. You judge yourself...harshly. It's not fair. It's not fair to her, or to me. I can stand on my own without a royal say-so- D: CRYSTAL! STOP! C: Huh? D: *Exhausted, but calm* Please...stop. I got the message. I've never had a patient connect so viscerally to everything that's going on in their psyche. This is a private session, but it may be the greatest public example of what makes you...you! C: So it's just my powers? D: NO! No. It's the emotional intelligence fluidity. You are able to adapt to those around you and feel just as comfortable on a new team as well as with old friends. New bonds are capable of being as strong, or stronger, than prior relationships. That's a trait that not everyone comes by easily. But there's an obvious peril with that. You're always navigating a shifting hierarchy of personal priorities. That can be exhausting. C: *sarcastic* You don't say? I just… I don't want to BE my sister, but sometimes I envy the straightforward manner with which she deals with situations. She's the queen. Everyone knows that, so there's no wishy-washiness. With me, it all depends on who it is and what they need. I know you're saying that's a good thing, but uggghhhh is it draining. D: I get that. And I'm grateful that wasn't accompanied by another power flux. What I would encourage you to do is to take a look at each relationship in your life, and determine how important it is to you. You don't have to rank each one individually, maybe just use a few tiers. Then, if you're in a situation where you have a choice to make, utilize the tiers to determine which one takes precedence. And let's not forget about your own needs as well. C: Hmm. Interesting idea. Well, it can't be any worse than what I've been doing so far. Which is winging it. D: Much of life is winging it, but with a bit more wisdom each time. The course corrections are less tricky with every turn. C: I understand. Thanks for the advice, and sorry for the damage to the office. You can send the bill to Black Bolt. At least we know he won't yell about it *heehee* Ending (47:32) Recommended reading: Avengers: Bloodties, War of Kings Next episodes: Emma Frost, Starfire, Children of super villains Plugs for social References: Medusa episode - Anthony (4:02) South Park “Feelin' good on a Wednesday” - Anthony (9:06) Don Cheadle is Captain Planet - Anthony (34:04) Apple Podcasts: here Google Play: here Stitcher: here TuneIn: here iHeartRadio: here Spotify: here Twitter Facebook Patreon TeePublic Discord
In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the “One Day War” with Dr. Doom and Latveria. Is this how all future wars will be fought - by destroying our ability to operate factories or use electronics? The Fantastic Four saved us this time, but what is to stop another attack? Should we take the war to Doom's homeland? Is there a defence against this new type of attack? Or is our only defence an army of super-powered individuals fighting as “champions”?In this issue:The Fantastic Four are on the lookout for super-powered despot Dr. Doom. He eludes them, hiding in plain sight (somewhat), and then sends strange anthropomorphic floating creatures that are impervious to the Four's powers, and are mainly sent to just irritate them. Dr. Doom then kidnaps the Thing's girlfriend Alicia Masters, and also demands a post in JFK's cabinet. JFK refuses to back down, which leads to Dr. Doom messing with their defence system. The Fantastic Four are tasked with bringing Doom down, and after a hard fought battle, they succeed, with the Invisible Girl taking Doom down through guts, guile, and strength.Assumed before the next episode:The world has learned of the tyranny of Dr. Doom, and are grateful for the Fantastic Four's assistance in defeating him and restoring relative peace to the world. This episode takes place:After Doom has been defeated. Marvel Two-In-One #30 (1977)The Thing and Alicia Masters eat lunch at Piccadilly Circus in London when they are interrupted by some chaos. A chino-clad Ben runs off to investigate and is ambushed by a Hydra-influenced Spider-Woman (who Ben insists is Spider-Man's sister). Nick Fury tells Ben to shut his damn mouth. Later, Alicia gets nabbed by Spider-Woman so she can ALSO become a mutated woman who is ALSO a spider (a Spider-Woman). To cope, Ben nearly drowns a hydrofoil filled with tourists and then some lady calls him the Hulk.Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter @angryheroshawn and @JenStansfield and email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the “Puppet Master” - a villain who has the ability to control people's minds (including a prison warden, and the Fantastic Four themselves) through his creepily realistic puppets. What are the implications of people not being in control of their bodies? Will this become a standard criminal defense? How can we know when someone is being mind-controlled? Is our political system at risk?In this issue:The Puppet Master is able to sculpt puppets of people and assume total control of them. He takes control of the Thing and kidnaps the Invisible Girl. The Thing is freed when he is turned back to a human temporarily with a potion that Mr. Fantastic had created. The three are then able to rescue the Invisible Girl from the Puppet Master's lair, as the Puppet Master flees on a flying mechanical horse. The Puppet Master has also taken control of the state prison warden and had him release all of the prisoners. The Fantastic Four put the riot down and restore order. They race back to the Puppet Master to confront him, but it is too late - he has already tripped and fallen out his apartment window, falling to his death on the street below. This issue is also notable for introducing the Puppet Master's blind stepdaughter Alicia Masters, an innocent drawn into her stepfather's schemes and someone who will play a larger role in the Fantastic Four in the years to come.Assumed before the next episode:Lawyers are trying to figure out how best to apply the mind control defence. The rest of the public is wondering when things will return to normal - and whether they can trust those in authority, never mind each other. This episode takes place:After the public has learned of the prison breakout and the role that mind control played in it. Jocular Jon Bogdanove and Tim Powers are back with a look at Fantastic Four #8: Meet the Puppet Master. We ALSO meet the future Mrs. Benjamin J. Grimm, Alicia Masters. Reed has been working on a formula to try and change the Thing back to human form and has Sue and Johnny try to bar Ben from entering his lab until it is finished. This leads to a fight between Ben and the others. Fed up with being kept in the dark, the Thing puts on his coat and hat and leaves the Baxter Building. Worried about Ben, Sue turns invisible and follows after him to make sure nothing bad happens to him. However, the Thing soon becomes aware that Sue is following him and tells her to leave him be. However, Sue spots someone climbing up to the top of the Queensborough Bridge and fires up a signal flare to alert Reed and Johnny. When Reed cannot stretch that far to save the man, Johnny flames on and flies after him.Not far away is the Puppet Master, who is testing out his radioactive clay that can control the people it is modeled after. Before he can make the man jump, the Torch saves his life and the heat from the Torch's flame causes feedback that burns the Puppet Master's finger. Furious over the interference the Puppet Master vows to eliminate the Fantastic Four before they can meddle in his plans further. When his step-daughter Alicia enters the room to inquire as to what is wrong, he silences her and tells her to obey his wishes as his step-daughter. To get revenge against the Fantastic Four, the Puppet Master fashions a puppet to resemble the Thing taking control of him and sending orders to come to his apartment. However the Puppet Master is unaware that the Invisible Girl is present with him, and seeing Ben enter a trance-like state, she turns invisible and follows after him to see what's wrong. When Ben and Sue enter the apartment, Sue's presence is betrayed thanks to Alicia's sensitive hearing. Realizing that the Invisible Girl has followed the Thing to his home, the Puppet Master places gas masks on himself, Alicia and Ben and then fills the room with ether, knocking Sue out. Seeing a resemblance between Sue and Alicia, he disguises Alicia as the Invisible Girl and orders her to accompany the mind controlled Thing back to the Baxter Building so the Fantastic Four will fall for his trap even more. The Puppet Master then begins the next phase of his scheme which involves taking control of the warden of the state prison. When Ben and Alicia arrive at the Baxter Building, both Johnny and Reed are unaware of the trap until Ben suddenly starts attacking them. However, the battle quickly ends when the Thing slams into Reed's chemistry experiment, dousing himself in chemicals that revert him to human form, thus freeing him from the Puppet Master's control. Back in human form, Ben explains everything that happened and Alicia finds comfort in Ben. At first she finds him different, but he suddenly reverts back into the Thing and instantly recognizes him by the touch. Ben is depressed by the fact that the only woman who would be interested in him in his monstrous form just happens to be a blind woman. Meanwhile, the warden at the state prison is ordered by the Puppet Master to free all the prisoners there instigating a massive jailbreak.Waking up from the ether, Sue tries to flee the apartment, but the creaky floorboards give her away. The Puppet Master uses a puppet of Sue to trip her up, but she still manages to fire off a flare signal to alert the Fantastic Four of her location. Soon Ben, Reed, Johnny and Alicia arrive on the scene. While the male members of the group are held at bay by the Puppet Master's robotic puppet, the group saves Sue, but the Puppet Master gets away. They then hear news reports of the prisoners trying to break out of the state prison and rush to the scene to stop the prisoners from escaping. With their superior powers, the Fantastic Four are easily able to stop the prisoners from escaping. Meanwhile, the Puppet Master returns to his apartment to try and utilize a puppet of himself that he believes will make him king of the world. It's Spankin' Time Hello, and welcome to episode 333 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week we're back in the realms of Marvel Two-in-One, as an extended cast (including Starhawk, Moondragon, Her, and Alicia Masters) make their way to Counter-Earth. Well, they would do, if some bastards hadn't towed the bloody thing away, forcing them to resurrect the High Evolutionary to work out where it's gone. All this for a shag... Mark Gruenwald, Jerry Bingham, Gene Day, George Roussos, Joe Rosen, Jim Salicrup, Jim Shooter, George Perez, and Joe Sinnott present Marvel Two-in-One #62 - The Taking Of Counter-Earth, in which Counter-Earth is taken, Starhawk reveals his secret power, and Moondragon receives some corporal punishment. Yes, it's time for us to look at a spanking! As well as this, we linger in the Microverse for Micronauts #16, and head into the multiverse for a brief look at What If? #20. Er... Yeah... Fnarr? Hello, and welcome to episode 331 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we're doing our best not to snigger in a smutty manner at the title of Marvel Two-in-One #61. Because there's nothing to laugh at, at all, alright? Anyway, we start another cosmic epic for Ben Grimm, as he gets mixed up with Her, Moondragon, Starhawk, and Alicia Masters. Some of these characters are headed out into space, and it's not necessarily the ones that you might be thinking of... Mark Gruenwald, Jerry Bingham, Gene Day, Ben Sean, Joe Rosen, Jim Salicrup, George Perez, and Terry Austin present Marvel Two-in-One #61 - The Coming Of Her. Featuring some things that I made notes about while editing the podcast, but I left those notes at home in Gent, and I'm over 500km away, so those notes might just as well have not been taken. Hmm. With a serious case of social anxiety, Takuma decides to act like his character while interacting with others, and makes use of his high stats and vast knowledge of Cross Reverie's lore to survive in his new environment. [★★★½ - Good] 29:14 - In Another World With My Smartphone - 15-year-old Touya Mochizuki is accidentally killed by God. As an apology, God allows him to be resurrected, but since he cannot send him back to his old world, he instead reincarnates him into a fantasy world along with a single special request. Touya uses his request in order to bring his smartphone into the new world with him, which God modifies so that the phone will function in the new world. God also amplifies Touya's physical, magical, and cognitive abilities to a certain degree as a further apology for the inconvenience of killing him. The British Bobby Cavalry Hello, and welcome to episode 264 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. It comes to something when The Thing has spent more time in the UK of late than one of the hosts... We're back to the world of Marvel Two-in-One. A mutated Alicia Masters - complete with extra limbs, Dr Seuss feet, and hairy forearms - is on the rampage in London, and only The Thing and Spider-Woman can stop her. Until they can't, and Susan Storm has to step in. Marv Wolfman, Ron Wilson, and Pablo Marcos present (but not in a proud way) Marvel Two-in-One #32, featuring a quickly-rebuilt Big Ben, a featureless grey void, some incredibly heavy inks, a lack of agency or point of view for one of the main characters, and the return of everybody's favourites - Chauncey and Trevor. Meadows, Airplanes, and Hypnosis Hello, and welcome to episode 261 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we return to jolly old London town for the further adventures of Ben Grimm in the Land of Blighty. Both the Thing and Spider-Woman find themselves on the trail of the missing Alicia Masters, to stop HYDRA from turning her into a horrific spider-mutant. Meanwhile, the most unlikely treasure hunt since the last Nicholas Cage movie continues. Yes, it's Marvel Two-in-One #31, presented by Marv Wolfman, Ron Wilson, and Sam Grainger. As well as kicking holes in the plot, we examine the events of the Blitz, the use of body horror in contemporaneous Marvel comics, the appearance of Spider-Woman-Woman, and the events that made Andy remark, ?I don't think they thought this through..." Marvel Two-In-One #74 (1981)Ben Grimm and the Fantastic Four go X-Mas shopping and poor, blind Alicia Masters is stuck carrying a bunch of boxes in an inexplicably cruel act. I mean, hell, Reed can carry all the boxes himself so I don’t know why he’s making a woman with a legit handicap do it. Anyway, Alicia makes Ben write a letter to step-dad, the Puppet Master, who promptly gets out of jail and brings his James Carville-looking self to their holiday party. Then, out of nowhere, Franklin Richards guilts his family into flying Ben and the Puppet Master to Europe so Puppet Dude can get his evil clay and presumably star in low-budget horror films. Hijinks in Eastern Europe occur involving a cow-based woman. Please rate, review, subscribe and tell a friend!Email the podcast at worstcollectionever@gmail.comContinue the conversation on Twitter @angryheroshawn and @JenStansfield
We are THRILLED to announce that with this episode being re-posted that all of the past Comic Book Bears episodes which went missing for a time are now back in circulation! On this one from just shy of a year ago, we were five strong in the Comic Book Bears den as Bill, Justin, Matt, Bryan and Steve were all on hand this week. First up, Daredevil's Season 2 on Netflix! Some of the bear boys had finished up their binge watching and chime in about what they thought of this season in which The Punisher and Elektra make their MCU debuts. Then, the long awaited Wonder Woman: Earth One graphic novel by Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette was recently released and that too comes under the CBB microscope. The (then) current comic talk continued on with Aliens: Defiance, Faith, Avengers: Standoff, The Ultimates, Harley Quinn and Suicide Squad: April Fool’s Day, Injection, The Omega Men, X-Men's Apocalypse Wars, Lois and Clark, Batman, Silver Surfer (complete with an Alicia Masters tangent) and more!
The Prat In The Cat In The Hat Hello, and welcome to episode 225 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we say a fond farewell to the most recent substitute member of the Fantastic Four, Luke Cage. A victim of mind-control and Reed's inventiveness, the Hero For Hire is sent packing back to Harlem. But not before he goes toe-to-toe with an artificially-enhanced Ben Grimm across the skies of New York in Fantastic Four #170. Roy Thomas, incoming regular penciler George Perez, and Joe Sinnott present what we consider to be the strongest story to date for Alicia Masters, as she single-handedly uncovers the villain behind the entire plot. We also spend time examining Riker's perverted boot, experiencing some OVER-ACT-ING!, and asking that all-important question: Who, or what, is Captain Sticky? Charles Atlas Meets Scientology Hello, and welcome to episode 222 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week we're encountering ghosts and the devil's offspring in a deserted town, in Marvel Two-in-One #14. Daimon Hellstrom, the Son of Satan, guest-stars in an issue in which he and The Thing go on a ghost/demon hunt, all because Alicia Masters has a strange feeling about an eerily-accurate model. Bill Mantlo, Herb Trimpe and John Tartaglione present a tale that we've chosen to read as including a Nazi Doombot Thing, full of Shat and getting strident with a trident. Joining us for this episode is returning guest-host Chris Thompson. Chris is Brand Manager for Titan Comics, and is previously an Eisner Award-winning retailer. He's also a huge fan of the Son of Satan, which is a bit of bonus as neither of the regular hosts can consider themselves such a thing. Chris can be found on twitter as @popculturehound, his fantastic interview podcast can be found at Multiversity.com, and Titan Comics can be found at http://titan-comics.com Send in your feedback to fantastic4podcast@gmail.com, leave your comments at the libsyn site, or at www.TheFantasticast.com. I-Spy: Gil Kane Edition Hello, and welcome to episode 158 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. Things are a little quieter this week for us, as we take a look at Fantastic Four #135. Of course, quieter is a loose term to use for an issue that includes a rampaging Dragon Man, Gregory Gideon and his cyber-suit of power, Medusa's hair, Sue's emotional trauma, and the betrayal of Thomas Gideon. Gerry Conway and John Buscema present the final appearance of one of the Fantastic Four's earliest villains. Oh, and a terribly-constructed prison cell, an overly-dramatic Alicia Masters, the most unlikely Time Magazine Person Of The Year, a terrible choice for a flight path, a mysterious stranger, and Stan Lee's fake Willie. It's a packed issue, but is it any good? Send in your feedback to fantastic4podcast@gmail.com, leave your comments at the libsyn site, or at fantasticflameon.wordpress.com. The Jack Kirby Collector has this to say about page 2 of Fantastic Four #49: "[it's] the exact point when the 1960s super-hero comics peaked." The Encyclopaedia Galactica also covers this subject, going into greater detail about the impact of a second splash-page at the start of the comic, conveying the majesty and scale of the two characters portrayed. The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy simply mentions that as the Earth is not about to be destroyed by a Vogon Constructor Fleet, then the events on this page must therefore be fictional, and can safely be disregarded. Unlike the Vogon Constructor Fleet. Steve and Andy, however, find more to talk about in this comic than just one splash page, no matter how phenomenal that page is. There's the depiction of The Watcher, the arrival of the (original) Punisher, and the first meeting of the Silver Surfer and Alicia Masters. It's pretty good! HYPNOFISH!!! Twelve episodes into the Fantasticast and Andrew and Stephen find themselves confronted by the titanic not-quite-a-team-up of Namor and Puppet Master, followed by the worst forger (and moustache) in the world, The Painter. Discover the joys of the Hypnofish, marvel at Alicia Masters' uncanny ability to resolve the plot in time for the end of the book, and cower before the meance of Wilhelm van Vile. Like A Puppet On A String This week, Andrew and Steve are joined by veteran podcaster Joshua Lapin-Bertone, formerly of Amazing Spider-Man Classics and currently of Clone Saga Chronicles, The Spider-Man Crawlspace and Bertone Beatle Bonanza, amongst others. Josh is a veteran of the Silver Age, despite not having lived through it, and was also the voice for Namor in our amazing trailer, so we couldn't wait to get him onto the show. This time, we cover the first appearance of Philip and Alicia Masters in Fantastic Four #8, whilst the Wizard and his alarming choice of facial hair pop up to render a future retcon null and void in Strange Tales #102.
