Does the word holiness feel stuffy and old-fashioned? Do you feel you have a personal and intimate relationship with the Lord? Does your Christian life look more like a performance than a practice? Today Jeannie Cunnion joins me to discuss her new book Closer to God. She is a best-selling author, bible teacher, and speaker who shares how the Holy Spirit can transform our family and motherhood. Her new book covers how to practically have an intimate relationship with the Lord in the middle of chaos and noise. As mom's we often long for a deep meaningful relationship with Jesus but don't know how to get there when kids are up early and there seems to be no space. Jeannie talks about cultivating a habit of conversing with the Lord in the mundane moments of our days and how Holy intimacy produces a Holy identity. If you feel far from God today we are reminded of Isaiah 30:15, “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength”, we cannot perform our way to God. He is waiting in the quiet intimacy. What if I told you great intimacy was fully possible for you… even if you're totally single. Wait… what!? I know, I know. Here's the deal, my friend: intimacy is so often seen through only a sexual or romantic lens, but intimacy is simply about deeply, truly knowing. Seeing. Hearing. Understanding someone deeply. And, that means you can have a fully intimate relationship with yourself. With or without deep love from another. And, that doesn't have to mean you don't desire love from someone else. You can have a rich relationship with yourself AND desire a connected relationship with a romantic partner. This week on the show, I'm dialing up an expert on the subject of intimacy. My dear friend and colleague, Allana Pratt joins me to discuss the way our society glorifies partnership at a great cost (as in, I'll be happy and worthy as long as I'm partnered), how to cultivate an intimate relationship with yourself, and how our major barrier to intimacy is our resistance to vulnerability. (Not to mention that vulnerability is touted as weakness in our culture and in many families of origin.) Allana shares the pivotal childhood moment when her father, irritated with her childlike play, punched a hole in the wall imprinting the message that men are dangerous, can't be trusted, and she must twist and contort herself to be found valuable in a suitor's eyes. We discuss how much emotional intelligence has to do with thriving in a relationship, whether romantic or otherwise, and the steps you can take to open yourself up to intimacy (without feeling freaked-the-fuck out). If you tend to avoid your emotions rather than feel them, grab a pen and paper, friend, because this one is gooooood. This pod explores: What intimacy even is and why it's related to every single relationship we have… even the one with ourselves Knowing when you can share your story and when it may not be safe to do so Understanding the connection between intimacy and vulnerability and the reason why they can both be so fucking uncomfortable Why we run from our emotional self and try to fix everything instead of feel our way through it (and how to shift that) HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! Who is your support team? Who are the people who know how to hold you (metaphorically and physically) when you're having a tough day? When you're experiencing shame? Not enough-ness? Guilt? Anger? Grief? It took me a long time to find these people and cultivate what we have, but here is a 3 Part Series with my support team and a peek behind the curtain into what our conversations look like (via phone because they all live outside MN). So many clients ask me: “How do I cultivate intimate friendships?” In a society wrought with fears and securities, it's so hard to trust anyone. It's hard to create a foundation of safety. Both parties need to be willing to take the risk and both parties need to be open and willing to hear how the other person wants to be loved. In this 3 Part Series, we talk to my 3 close friends — Tom, Amy, Hailey — checking in about the state of our friendship. What's working? What's not? What's hard? What's easy? They are raw recordings containing laughter, vulnerability, compassion, and love. We are all showing up with a lot of trust in these interviews. If you need a glimpse into hard and fulfilling relationship conversations, please listen. Interested in working with a Somatic Sex & Relationship Coach? Sabbath // Cultivating Intimacy by Oasis Church Chicago
Have you ever felt disconnected from God? I know I have. Have you ever felt weary in your soul? Yep, also me. Can I share something with you? We all have. Even the most spiritually mature, Christ follower that we look up to on a platform has their moments. It's not necessarily that we don't have these seasons of dryness in our lives, it's what do we do in them? What do we reach for? The world is go, go, go and oh so noisy, but do we take the time to cultivate an intimate relationship with our creator? That in and of itself will breath life into our weary souls. I loved this conversation with Mo (Isom) Aiken, unpacking her latest book Fully Known: An Invitation to True Intimacy with God. I trust that if you start this conversation dry and weary, you will end it with hope and direction towards the source of living water. If you want to take some practical steps towards cultivating intimacy with God, grab my course Tangled!

To watch the full video, follow this link. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLLU19XsKSs) This episode is special because it starts with a guided meditation focused on aligning the chakras. Something I've never personally experienced before but am a true believer in after having allowed Jacqueline to lead me through this mindfulness exercise. I give my feedback when she finishes off with a nice, resonating singing bowl to bring it all together. Furthermore, the conversation touched on how chakras develop over our lifespan and how each phase of our lives emphasizes on this growth; we looked at the platinum rule and what it means to treat others how THEY want to be treated, rather than treating them how you want to be treated; how to neutralize shame through forgiveness; and lastly, how cultivating intimacy through awareness can enhance our relationships, inter and intrapersonal. This week, I chatted with Sherica A. Matthews about developing and cultivating emotional intimacy in a relationship with your spouse or partner while also running your business or pursuing a successful career. As moms, partners, business owners, career-women, or some combination of all four, sometimes (okay, maybe a lot of the time) we struggle with maintaining that strong relationship with our partners. With the added pressure of teleworking and virtual school, a lot of us are stressed, busy, and struggling now more then ever. So, I figured we were long overdue for a conversation about the challenges we face with building emotional intimacy in our relationships and how to overcome those issues. My biggest takeaway? Relationships are abstract, so there's no "right way" to handle them. As far as relationship advice, tips, ideas, etc. take the concepts that you find the most helpful and adapt them to your specific situation. **More info on our sponsor, Lisa's Maker Space, HERE. As 2020 continues to unfurl in a fashion beyond surreal, more and more are descending into the anguished abyss of distress. Awakening to acrid tangerine skies that have transformed sunny California into a Blade Runner dystopia, I myself vacillate between melancholia and a commitment to forge a better world. When the darkness descends, I find sanity in focusing only on those things I can control: my actions and reactions. Nonetheless, waves of anxiety -- and sometimes even despair -- continue to break on the shores of my consciousness. It is in these moments that I resort to a battery of simple but generally quite effective contrary actions. I spend time in nature. Double down on meditation and human connection. I eat better and move more. And I extend myself in service to others. To further explore the many practical and unexacting things we can all undertake during this stressful time to course-correct our emotional disposition, reframe our reality and sustainably serve our well-being, I'm joined by my friend Rangan Chatterjee, M.D. -- who today returns for a third spin on the RRP flywheel. One of the most influential doctors in the U.K., Rangan is a pioneer in the field of progressive, functional medicine. He is double board-certified in internal medicine and family medicine, holds an honors degree in immunology, and has appeared on seemingly every prominent media outlet from the BBC to The New York Times. In addition, Rangan prevails over the wildly popular Feel Better, Live More podcast. His TEDx talk, How To Make Diseases Disappear, has been viewed almost 3 million times. And he is the author of three #1 Sunday Times bestselling books. The focus of today's conversation is his latest well-being tome, Feel Better In 5.A close cousin to my podcast with Atomic Habits author James Clear (RRP #401), today's exchange is all about habit change and habit formation. It's about the power of bite-sized actions. And how, when undertaken regularly, short and simple practices can rapidly and completely change your health and life.We discuss the difference between breaking bad habits versus crowding them out with new, better habits. We explore the realities of food addiction. Our epidemic of emotional eating. And Rangan's personal theory on cause and solution. We talk generally about holistic health and lifestyle medicine, and why progressive wellness should be accessible to all -- now more than ever.Interspersed throughout, Rangan shares how he has helped patients relieve stress, find fulfillment, and engender peace in these chaotic times. But most importantly, we explore his very simple, almost effortless, methods for building a new and sustainable lifestyle to serve our long-term health. The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube (courtesy of Zoom). And as always, the conversation streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.I always enjoy time spent with Rangan, even when it's remote. My hope is that you do as well -- and put his advice into action.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsFour Sigmatic: Nutritious and delicious mushroom brews and elixirs made with only the highest quality adaptogens and easy to take on the go. Okay, guys, I gotta warn you. If you have sensitive ears and easily get offended, this may not be the conversation for you. There are pretty much all cuss words, discussion of sex and vagina issues and the use of yoni eggs. Today’s conversation with intimacy alchemist, Cara Kovacs, is very colorful – like bright NEON colors, but so raw, real and enlightening! So you maybe wondering why I have Cara on the podcast today? She is a third generation healer and an intimacy alchemist empowering people to have better sex lives, heal from old patterns and wounds, and cultivate radical self-love. At the young age of 14 she knew she would be a sex and relationship therapist. Last year, she was named by Wanderlust as one of “35 People Under 35 To Watch In Wellness” as she combines modern science with ancient healing and spiritual philosophy to help bring people to truth through love. Today on the podcast, we go deep into healing old wounds by looking at your story around body shaming and self-loathing and empower yourself by re-writing your story to create more self-love and intimacy: Look at where you’re disconnected Look at your stories and your history Rewrite the narrative in a positive way that fits your needs to create radical self-love Intimacy is a spiritual practice and requires trust, surrender, and clearing the narrative connection so you can reconnect to your deep inner wisdom of your body, feel empowered and celebrate your own unique magic. Your body is normal. You are normal. True self-love requires vulnerability, self-awareness, acceptance, and patience to examine your life lessons and make constant and conscious choices for your highest good BECAUSE you love yourself. When you live from that place, you are unstoppable. Check out Cara at https://www.carakovacs.com, at her events in person and online, hear her on her podcast and through personal coaching. Geneen Marie-Haugen explores an emerging dimension of the human/Earth relationship – a relationship in which the human capacity for imagination is an essential component of planetary ecology. We’ll consider the possibility that our manner of approaching the wilder Others make a difference – both reawakening the older mind in us that knows the animate nature of the world, as well as re-enlivening the wilder Others themselves. “A practice of celebrating the wild Earth and cosmos – like other practices – holds the possibility of re-shaping consciousness; the more our thoughts, words and gestures are intertwined with the beings among whom we abide, the more the world pulses with life, the more we hear the exuberantly singing Earth, and perhaps even the songs of starlight.” –Geneen Marie Haugen from her essay, “Thomas Berry And The Evocation Of Participatory Consciousness,” which appears in Thomas Berry: Dreamer of the Earth.Dr. Geneen Marie Haugen grew up a little wild, with a run-amok imagination. As a guide to the intertwined mysteries of nature and psyche, she delights in multidimensional listening and in offering perceptive questions, ceremonies, escapades, and reflections that help expand a sense of our own possibilities as individuals (and as a species) and deepen our experience of participation with an intelligent, animate Earth/Cosmos. Her writing has appeared in many anthologies and journals, including Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth; Thomas Berry: Dreamer of the Earth; Written River; Parabola Journal; Kosmos Journal; Ecopsychology; and The Artist’s Field Guide to Greater Yellowstone. A former tipi-dweller and whitewater river guide, she now lives amidst the creatures and features of southern Utah’s sandstone labyrinth. She is exploring the awakening of what she calls “planetary imagination,” and the possible emergence of a new mode of the human that she has called Homo imaginans. She is committed to the world-transforming potential of the human imagination in collaboration with the Earth community. To know more about Geneen’s work visit https://animas.org or see her offering this spring at Esalen.Support the show (https://www.natureevolutionaries.com/donations)
“Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort."Kelly McGonigal, PhDWe equate the new year with potential energy. It's an opportunity to re-evaluate one's trajectory. A permission grant to chart a new course of self-discovery.In truth, every moment presents a window for reinvention. But January always provides heightened urgency to inventory how we spend our precious time, focus our intention and deploy our energy.Extrapolating on themes explored with Chadd Wright, today we balance out the warrior alpha-male vibe with some feminine wisdom, courtesy of Kelly McGonigal, PhD.A health psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University who specializes in understanding the mind-body connection, Kelly is a pioneer in the field of 'science-help,' translating insights from psychology and neuroscience into practical strategies that support personal well-being and community connection. There’s a decent chance you caught her amazing 2013 TED Talk, How To Make Stress Your Friend. A viral hit with over 21 million views, Kelly makes the case that social connection is both a natural instinct and a source of resilience in times of stress.Or perhaps you’ve read one of her many amazing books, The Upside of Stress, The Willpower Instinct, or The Science of Compassion -- all of which are based on classes Kelly has previously taught at StanfordThrough the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism, Kelly helped create Stanford Compassion Cultivation Training, a program now taught around the world that helps individuals strengthen their empathy, compassion, and self-compassion. And since 2000, she has taught dance, yoga, and group exercise in the San Francisco Bay Area.In addition, Kelly has served as the psychology consultant for The New York Times Education Initiative and has appeared broadly in many mainstream media outlets, including The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Anderson Cooper Show, and CNN.Fresh off the press and the framework for today’s conversation is her latest work, The Joy of Movement. A love letter to physicality (motivated in part by the dance, yoga, and group exercise classes she has been teaching for two decades), it's an evidence-based primer on how movement can serve as an antidote to depression, anxiety, and loneliness -- the modern epidemics of our time.Although we touch a bit on willpower and stress (the subjects explored in her previous books), this conversation focuses on what exactly happens when we move our bodies. But movement isn't just about fitness. It's not about the treadmill or StairMaster. And it has nothing to do with weight loss or six-pack abs.Instead, movement is about something far more important. It's fundamental to being human. And a powerful path to that which we seek most -- happiness, hope, connection, and courage.Drawing on neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and evolutionary biology, today we discuss why movement need not be a chore, but rather a source of joy. A source of self-expression. A vehicle for cooperation and social connection. A tool for mastery. And for some, even an instrument for self-transcendence.Whether you're an experienced ultra marathon runner, a CrossFit enthusiast or a couch potato with a new year's resolution to finally get your heart rate up, Kelly is here to help deepen our collective understanding of how movement can create more meaning, pleasure, positivity and intimacy in our daily lives. You can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the conversation streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Kelly is fantastic. And this conversation is a perfect way to embrace the new year enthusiastic about the body's potential to quite literally change everything about how we experience ourselves and our communities. Podcast Notes Key Takeaways Spending time alone in nature is beneficial for mental healthWhen striving to reach a goal, know that progress isn’t linear; you’ll likely experience many setbacks Exercise causes increased brain levels of endorphins and oxytocin—neurotransmitters associated with social connection and cooperative behaviorMusic for exercise is best used selectively when you need a boost, rather than as background noise Someone who attempts to better themselves and stumbles is more respectable than someone who never tried in the first placeAlways remember: Any exercise (movement) > no exercise (movement)Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.org“Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort."Kelly McGonigal, PhDWe equate the new year with potential energy. I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange as much as I enjoyed having it.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & Subscribe Apple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsGrove Collaborative: The online marketplace that makes it easy to go green by delivering all-natural & non-toxic home, beauty, and personal care products right to your doorstep. Phil explains how the exchange between Jesus and Martha in Luke 10: 38-42 (Jesus gently but firmly responds to Martha's demand) shows the superior importance of cultivating intimacy with the Lord despite the busyness of our lives; and Phil speaks of how we can protect this intimate relationship. “My mission is to help 100 million people feel fantastic by restoring them to optimal health."Rangan ChatterjeeToday we’re going to talk about stress. In proper doses it’s actually beneficial, promoting resilience -- both physical and mental. But for most people, that dose isn't proper. Instead it's chronic -- excessive, persistent and unrelenting. In fact, elevated levels of social and emotional stress have come to define our daily experience, leading the World Health Organization to qualify our chronic relationship with stress as “the health epidemic of the 21st Century”.Left untreated, it's an incessant strain that promotes low libido, poor memory and weight gain. Ultimately it can lead to heart disease, depression, autoimmune disorders, premature aging and a litany of other serious and deleterious health conditions. This week’s guest has seen the perils of chronic stress first hand. A UK-based medical doctor, he found himself increasingly treating patients suffering from the downstream implications of living with this malevolence. It prompted him to ask, why is this happening? His name is Rangan Chatterjee, MD. He decided to find answers to this question -- and do something about it.If that name sounds familiar, perhaps it’s because you caught him on the BBC, starring in Doctor in the House. Perhaps you read his bestselling book, The Four Pillar Plan, released in the United States under the title How To Make Disease Disappear. Or maybe, just maybe, you caught RRP 376, our popular first conversation from July of 2018 that launched our friendship. For those unfamiliar, Dr. Chatterjee is a pioneer in the field of progressive, functional medicine. Widely regarded as one of the most influential doctors in the UK, he is double board certified in internal medicine and family medicine and holds an honors degree in immunology. An in-demand lecturer, he created the very first “Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine” course accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners in London. In addition, he hosts the popular Feel Better, Live More podcast (which I’ve appeared on twice) and has been widely featured on an array of prominent media outlets like the The New York Times, BBC, Forbes, The Guardian, The Financial Times, and many others. The focus of today’s conversation is also the subject of Rangan’s latest book, The Stress Solution -- an important primer on how chronic stress can lead to disease, along with strategies, tools and lifestyle changes proven to protect against and reverse its toxic effects. This is a conversation about the very nature of stress. What creates it. The health implications it produces. The many simple things you can do to alleviate it -- and it's varied ill effects.More specifically, we discuss Rangan’s direct experience fielding patients with chronic stress -- and the science-based strategies he deployed to ameliorate the condition and reverse it’s negative consequences. We talk about the critical role sleep, meditation and mindfulness practices play in combating stress. And how human touch, intimacy and connecting with nature can assuage it's impact. We cover breathing techniques. Disconnecting from our devices. Carving out “me time”. The importance of finding passion -- and infusing your life with purpose.Lastly, we dig into Rangan’s new found love for Swimrun (I’m taking a wee bit of credit for that one Dr. C!).You can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the conversation streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.I think we can all benefit from de-stressing ourselves this holiday season. Both fun and important, my hope is that you listen keenly -- and put Dr. Chatterjee's prescription into action.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & Subscribe Apple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsFully: From the popular Jarvis adjustable standing desks to their every-which-way active office chairs, to their many movement supporting accessories — anti-fatigue mats, treadmill desks and more — Fully is all about helping you bring more movement, energy and joy to your work and life.
