How can we work within the wounds of severance to bring repair to the trauma-induced damage of people and planet?  Gail, one of the Co-Founders of Extinction Rebellion, and Miles walk from Brantham, Suffolk, to the nearby Stour estuary on a cold grey January morning. They chat about XR and protest, birdwatching, body politics, humans as a keystone species, psychedelics, and cultural change. After some time spent with the low-flying knots at the water, Miles and Gail forage some ingredients for lunch as they make their way back to the village.  As they cook and eat together, they ask what community practices we need for a kinder future. Gail is a Co-Founder of Extinction Rebellion. Her time is spent supporting people and actions to help us all meet the unfolding collapse of modernity. Dedicated to spreading dignity and freedom, reclaiming people power, and unifying with our global family, her activism has been a source of inspiration for many. Her doctorate is in molecular biophysics.   Here is a Greenbelt talk referred to in their conversation: https://www.greenbelt.org.uk/product/the-religion-we-need-next/   Here are some of the books that they mention: Hospicing Modernity - Vanessa Machado de Oliveira Witches, Sluts, Feminists: Conjuring the Sex Positive - Kristen J. What if everything we think we know about the history of our species is wrong? That's the provocative question at the heart of a new book by today's guest, David Wengrow. Hailed as fascinating, brilliant, and potentially revolutionary, “The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity” debuted at no. 2 on the New York Times bestseller list. Drawing on the latest research in archeology and anthropology, it suggests that the lives of our ancient ancestors were not nasty, brutish, and short. On the contrary, they were playful, collaborative, and improvisational — and there's a lot they can teach us about how to improve the world as we know it. This is an intellectual feast. There is not a single chapter that does not (playfully) disrupt well-seated intellectual beliefs. It is deep, effortlessly iconoclastic, factually rigorous, and pleasurable to read." — Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Author, "The Black Swan." Tiokasin talks with co-author David Wengrow, a professor of comparative archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. He is a visiting professor at New York University. He is the author of three books, including, "What Makes Civilization?" David has conducted archaeological fieldwork in various parts of Africa and the Middle East. He was the author of "Debt: The First 5,000 Years" and "Bullshit Jobs: A Theory," and was a contributor to Harper's Magazine, The Guardian and The Baffler. In this podcast episode returning guest Peter Gray, retired professor of psychology at Boston College, makes an argument for why we should consider other ways of understanding and structuring learning in and outside of school. We talk about college and access to working life, possible alternative ways of learning an occupation, David Geary's evolutionary theory of biologically primary and secondary abilities, what we need to learn and when we need to learn it, what we can observe in kids who aren't taught in the conventional ways, kids who learn to read on their own or who learn the whole math curriculum in a couple of months in their late teens, how our expectations influence learning, consequences for not reading when society expects you to, how and when children learn to walk and what we do when they don't, whining in different cultures, the summer slide, and what to say when people complain that they wish that someone had forced them to learn something earlier in life, how children's independence and autonomy relates to their mental health, how we try to fix problems by taking away children's liberty and responsibility, why we should teach them about dangers instead of trying to get rid of them, and many other topics.  Even if you don't find yourself agreeing with all of Peter's arguments, we would love to hear more about what points he's making that you think are valid and worth considering. How can we let alternative views on education actually widen our current understanding of learning and schooling, instead of just assuming the worst about each other? Send un an email to larsogpaal@gmail.com, we'll be thankful to every kind of criticism, feedback and suggestions of further explorations and interviews that we should do on these topics.  See more of Peter's writings on his Substack https://petergray.substack.com/ Here's his 2017 article about the summer slide, mentioned in the episode: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/freedom-learn/201707/facts-and-fiction-about-the-so-called-summer-slide   Mentions and recommendations from the episode:  Jim Rietmulder, 2019. In today's powerful episode I speak with Elise Loehnen, author of the bestselling book, On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to be Good. Elise is also the host of the Pulling the Thread Podcast, and prior to her podcast she was chief content officer of Goop. Today we're talking about the Gluttony chapter of Elise's book, and how it relates to the patriarchal system we live in. Elise starts by describing the origins of that system, which has come to define our worldview, whether we realize it or not. While it's started as a hierarchical dominance-based external system, it's become an internal system that we all perpetuate, often unconsciously. We explore how the system specifically plays into our relationship with food and our bodies. Elise describes how the “sin” of gluttony isn't about extreme over-indulgence but rather about our moralizing of food. It's a policing of what we eat and how our bodies look in order to conform and express our goodness. While we're deeply influenced by powers outside of us (think diet culture) we also perpetuate the system internally. We police OURSELVES in an effort to be “good,” and to feel like we have control. However, this need for control disconnects us from real pleasure and from our true selves. We talk about how to get out of this giant web of patriarchal conditioning to gain sovereignty for ourselves.I think you're going to learn SO MUCH from this episode and begin to see how you can reclaim your own power and your own pleasure this holiday season. We discuss the export of middle class parenting ideology and how idea around good childcare are rooted in assumptions from WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic) societies, and highlight the contrasting community focused values of the indigenous Runa people. Dr. Love discusses why energy is so important in studies of the climate transition, and why the field of anthropology is well-suited to the study of energy in terms of the field's history and premise. Economic anthropologists, in particular, are well positioned to explore the inter-disciplinarity of energy and the economy. Sandy also drew on Tom's past explorations of peak oil and more recently his involvement with colleagues in ongoing work in net energy (Energy Returned on Energy Invested) to interrogate why these debates remain highly relevant to the climate transition. Finally, Sandy talked with her guest about his most recent work as a co-founder and developer with other colleagues of the Planetary Limits Academic Network (PLAN) website – which is providing a forum for these discussions and for public scholarship. Guest Bio: Tom is emeritus professor of anthropology at Linfield College, McMinnville, Oregon. We chat about the excellent book 'Everyday Utopia' with author Kristen R. Ghodsee. We discuss why people are resistant to hearing about alternative ways of life, the role regret & shame plays in 'status quo bias' and why the traditional family structure no longer works (if it ever did!). Kristen illustrates how ‘Blue Sky Thinking' is encouraged in corporate culture but not for social, politic or economic matters. However she also highlights the power of fiction to persuade people of alternative ideas for social arrangements. The discussion is a call to re-examine our current domestic arrangements and consider healthier alternatives for the future. "One of those startlingly rare books that upends what you think is possible, Everyday Utopia offers a radically hopeful vision for how to build more contented and connected societies, alongside a practical guide to what we all can do in the meantime to live the good life each and every day." Does Star Trek show us what socialism looks like? What would it look like if we organized society democratically instead of allowing a few people to control most of the resources?   Bibliography and Further Reading * Obviously, the work of Marx and Engels is key to this piece. Particular texts I drew on here include The Civil War in France (1871) (modern editions contain the first draft and the address on the Civil War) and The Critique of the Gotha Programme (1875). Marx's "La Liberte" speech (1872) is where he proposes that some countries might transition to communism peacefully: https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1872/09/08.htm * One of my chief inspirations for this piece and in general is the book Socialism: Past and Future (1989) by Michael Harrington, founder of the Democratic Socialists of America. Socialism does a good job of summing up the history of socialism, the rise of democratic socialism, the problems we faced in the 20th century, and where we might go from here. * The Preconditions of Socialism (1899) (also published in English as Evolutionary Socialism) by Eduard Bernstein is a fascinating book by the father of the democratic socialist movement and the idea of achieving socialists goals through gradual reform. A controversial figure both in his time and today, both with orthodox Marxists and modern democratic socialists, his story is one I find endlessly fascinating. Much as during the Social Democratic period of the mid-20th century, when Preconditions was first published, it seemed as if gradual socialism was working in Bernstein's native Germany. Then of course the First World War brought Germany to its knees. Bernstein himself, who'd become a member of the Reichstag, would die three weeks before Hitler came to power, undid all the achievements of his party, executed its leaders, and most of the members of Bernstein's ethnic group. While researching this piece, I also drew on The Dilemma of Democratic Socialism: Eduard Bernstein's Challenge to Marx (1952) by Peter Gay, and the excellent introduction to the English translation of Preconditions from 1993 by translator Henry Tudor. * For the history of the Russian Revolution, I highly recommend China Mieville's October (2017), a highly readable retelling of the story of the revolution and the events around it. * I am highly indebted to the work of Richard Wolff, whose Democracy at Work (2012) and associated website and YouTube channel opened my eyes to the possibilities of worker cooperatives as a tool for workers to control the means of production within a capitalist society and so create a mechanism not only to improve the lives of workers in the near term, but to build up worker power and control in the long term. * I'm also indebted to the continued work of Cory Doctorow in and out of his Pluralistic project, with too many useful and informative pieces to list here. For example, Pluristic turned me onto how municipal broadband providers are the only ones with consistent customer satisfaction, or his piece in Boing Boing about how the notion of the "tragedy of the commons" is based on lies and fraud. Other important pieces include "What Comes After Neoliberalism" and "Excuseflation".  * Carlos Maza's excellent video essay "The Pay for It Scam" is essential for understanding the ways in which only programs for the social good are ever asked "how will you pay for it", while corporate subsidies, tax cuts, and the military budget piles on the debt.  * For more on the "primitive communism" of the Iroquois and other native tribes, I recommend The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity (2021) by David Graeber. * Most of my research on Gene Roddenberry comes from the book The Impossible Happened: The Life and Work of Gene Roddenberry, Creator of Star Trek (2016) by Lance Parkin  * More on how modern corporations actually show the power of a centralized economy, a piece inspired by the book The People's Republic of Walmart (2019): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRepEvmCCIg   A larger bibliography can be found at: https://literatemachine.com/2023/04/11/star-trek-into-socialism/#paragraph

How can an organization with values of equity shift away from its own embedded hierarchy? In this conversation, we speak with Robin Cook Roth who was recently the CEO of the UK company, Traidcraft to talk about how he led his organization out of the hierarchy. We discuss how holacracy's process of self-management, distribution of power, roles, and responsibilities led him to experience a level of freedom and joy in his own work, and how it has helped the company live out its values. We get into some of the spiritual dimensions of this work, and some of what it means to remember and reenchant the organizations where so many people spend so much time. 1:37 - Learn more about Robin Cook Roth5:25 - What is self-management?12:51 - Who decides what's the appropriate distribution of power?18:10 - Tradecraft's transition to Holacracy25:00 - Sara Jolena on The Dawn of Everything30:46 - What is the role of power as it relates to spiritual power displaying itself in an organization?34:50 - How was it like to give up power?38:30 -Relinquishing power in the work of decolonization43:45 - How does Holacracy intersect with suppliers?52:38 - What are some initial steps and resources to self-management?The Dawn of Everything: A New History of HumanityLet My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant BusinessmanSupport the showLearn more about Sara Jolena Wolcott and Sequoia SamanvayaMusic Title: Both of Us Music by: madiRFAN Don't forget to "like" and share this episode!

The American singer and songwriter John Legend has won two Emmys, 12 Grammys, an Oscar and a Tony award – making him one of only 16 living artists to have won all four honours. One of his songs, All of Me, written for his wife, the model Chrissy Teigen, has been streamed more than four billion times on digital platforms. He was born John Stephens in Springfield, Ohio into a musical family. His father played drums in church, where his mother conducted the choir. John took piano lessons from an early age and soon became involved in arranging music for the church. He attended university at the age of 16 and after graduating worked as a management consultant for four years, while pursuing his interest in music out of office hours. He signed his first record deal after working with Kanye West early in his career, and took on the stage name John Legend, releasing his first solo album in 2004. Alongside his musical career, he has acted on TV and film, including a role in the highly successful La La Land. He has performed at three Presidential inauguration ceremonies – for President Obama in 2009 and 2013, and for President Biden in 2021. John lives in the USA with his wife and their two children. hosted by Boysen HodgsonIn this conversation we'll hit some of the factors that are driving our poor health outcomes. We've bought in to ways of being that hurt us ... and everyone else. But it didn't start with us. The provocative thesis that Ed puts forward is that our nature as men … the narrative we're told about what it means to be man, has been corrupted. The current perspectives in anthropology, sociology, psychology, and neuroscience … are very different than what the academy has been saying for a long time. What if progress … as we've understood it … is killing us? We talk about the idea of ‘Circle and Arrow' masculinity. And we talk about Integral thinking and how ‘Teal' perspectives can help develop more soulful organizations to improve business performance. How can we help and support one another evolve our workplaces … and succeed. The bottom line … as you'll hear Ed say in the episode ... is that Liberating Masculinity is about supporting men to move from rigid, cold, and isolated manhood … to embrace something more … in a world that needs men's agility, warmth, and connection. How to Find Ed Frauenheim:Website: https://thetealteam.com/ Website: https://www.edfrauenheim.com/Book: Reinventing Masculinity: The Liberating Power of Compassion and ConnectionLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ed-frauenheim-685294/Additional Resources:Civilized to Death: The Price of ProgressReinventing Organizations: A Guide to Creating Organizations Inspired by the Next Stage in Human ConsciousnessThe Dawn of Everything: A New History of HumanitySubscribe/Rate/Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: >>>HERE

Buckle up, anthropology, history, and political philosophy nerds! It's a two-parter! Shauna Gordon-McKeon, a writer, programmer, and one of the most brilliant, multifaceted people I know, talks about how two books: The Dawn of Everything and Legal Systems Very Different from Ours, inspired her to think differently about progress and the possibilities of governance. In part one, we learn about: the myth of the evolution of civilization, historical seasonal governance structures, and what political egalitarianism and high school yearbook superlatives have in common. Books referenced: The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity, by David Graeber and David Wengrow: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374157357/thedawnofeverything Legal Systems Very Different from Ours, by David Friedman, Peter T. Leeson, and David Skarbek: https://bookshop.org/books/legal-systems-very-different-from-ours/9781793386724 ConstitutionFacts.com has a complete list of people who left the Constitutional Convention early. Note that it includes people who left in protest because they did not want to overturn the Articles of Confederation, but also people who left because of poor health, sick family members, etc. The historical cultures that Shauna referenced that had seasonal governance structures were Cheyanne Lakota, Inuit, and pirates. The Wikipedia article “Governance in 18th-century piracy” explains the leadership structure on pirate ships in detail. This week we shut down Mark Meadows and his run-out-the-clock hail Mary strategy to evade accountability for his role in Donald Trump's attempt to overthrow the government. Former Senate candidate Max Linn, the first person to get COVID in Maine, died in a hot tub following a dispute over (what else?) cryptocurrency. Our roving Australian correspondent, playwright Glace Chase, explains why “Throat Goat” was trending on Twitter and what this all has to do with former first lady Nancy Reagan.
