Guitarist, singer/songwriter Jeff Lang shares the music that moulded him.

Zig at the gig podcasts

Interview with Jeff Lang 2024 Australian guitarist-songwriter-vocalist-producer, Jeff Lang has built a reputation for making startling music that is accomplished, intricate, gutsy, melodic and loaded with soul. Often taking unexpected turns, he has consistently inspired his audiences by creating a stylistically diverse catalog of over 25 albums. Jeff has mischievously called his music ‘Disturbed Folk.' One writer referred to him as a “quiet achiever.” But the overall impression one has from observing Jeff's lengthy career is that of a driven man who keeps his head down, playing and recording music as if his very life depends on it. Outside of his homeland, Jeff has toured the UK, Europe, Japan, India, China, South Africa, New Zealand and Canada as well as concentrated work in the U.S., where he has played upwards of 300 shows, living there for 6 months at a time. He has appeared on prestigious American radio programs A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage and Acoustic Café. Jeff has shared stages with Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Richard Thompson, Bonnie Raitt, Ani Di Franco, Chris Whitley, Albert Collins, Loudon Wainwright III, Greg Brown, John Butler, AR Rahman and Bob Geldolf, among many others. Jeff has delivered show-stopping performances at festivals all across the globe: The Dublin Blues Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Quebec City Music Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Winterhawk Bluegrass Festival, Fuji Rock, Glastonbury, Echo Park China, Ottawa BluesFest as well as on his home turf at Port Fairy, Woodford, Bluesfest Byron Bay and Womadelaide. Jeff Lang's unique musical vision easily finds a home in myriad settings, from large festival stages to the intimate, long-running Ann Arbor, Michigan club The Ark to the Sydney Opera House. Most importantly, Jeff Lang has achieved what is a rarity in the cluttered world of contemporary sounds: his own voice. Jeff's info https://jefflang.com.au

Buddy Guy put out an album in 1991 called Damn Right I Got The Blues. The song sounds like so much of a form of catharsis. However, blues can also represent a form of celebration. There's pre-war country blues, jump blues, swamp blues.... There's blues styles from Chicago, Texas, Louisiana and other American regions. The blues is not one thing. It's old...it's contemporary. It's relaxed...it's heart pumping. It has old and young practitioners. It has iconic practitioners and some bloke playing it at your local pub. Welcome to episode 169 of Love That Album. Obviously, the most famous blues musicians are those from the US and from the UK. Here in Australia, however, there's been a long tradition of musicians who've devoted themselves to the blues, be it through the pre-war stylings of The Paramount Trio, the Chicago style of Collard Greens and Gravy or....the hard-boogie style of Carson. Blues lovers here believe that there is something uniquely Australian about how blues is performed here....tyranny of distance making it gritty or something like that. In 2019, artist and blues lover Pauline Bailey took it upon herself to record an oral history of Australian blues by speaking to a plethora (as Max Crawdaddy would have it) of musicians about their connection to local blues music. In 2023, Pauline has just released Volume 4 of these incredible books with no intention of stopping. Many are well known (Diesel, Jeff Lang, Ross Wilson, Mal Eastick, Mike Rudd), some not so much......all have fascinating stories to tell about how music came into their lives, how they've pursued it, and where it took them. These books are an invaluable resource into a side of Australian music history not previously tackled. The books even feature chapters devoted to some past LTA guests (Shane Pacey, Charles Jenkins, Anthony Shortte, Sarah Carroll, and Chris Wilson). My huge thanks to Pauline for joining me to discuss her work and her devotion to the music and stylists she's immortalised in print. This week on the podcast we have Jake Bowen of Periphery being interviewed by Matt while they’re both on the road performing shows with the band. Recorded in the back of their tour bus, the two discuss life on the road, the change and growth of the band’s dynamic over the many years of touring, and how Jake has matured through the process. One specific topic the guys dive into is bullying. As a kid Jake moved around a bit and was often the “new kid” in school. This opened him up to bullying and forced him to develop thick skin while learning how to get good at being on his own much of the time. Despite the sad nature of the topic, Jake explains his experience from a positive and optimistic standpoint with an inspiring view for others. He just released his debut, full length, solo album which has gained considerable attention in Baltimore resulting in radio airplay and headlining shows. He is also a former music student of Jordan, in what was his most unique set of lessons. Matt is really smart, really interesting, and really funny. In Episode 31 we dig into his relatively short journey as a musician and what it's like putting together a full record as a solo artist. He shares about the unconventional high school he attended and how it helped him develop as an artist. We go deep into social anxiety, self-confidence, ego-driven motivations, and pizza chain restaraunts. Matt Halpern sat this one out as he's on tour with Periphery, but having this Matt join us was our obvious first choice. Literary Treks: A Star Trek Books and Comics Podcast

Star Trek: Avenger. At the end of William Shatner’s The Return, Captain Kirk found himself in dire circumstances. Sacrificing his life once again to save countless others, it looked as though we had again lost the Starfleet legend. However, in 1997, William Shatner (along with collaborators Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens), found themselves once again resurrecting galactic hero James T. Kirk! In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing and Dan Gunther are joined by Bruce Gibson to talk about William Shatner’s Star Trek: Avenger. We discuss coming back to the book, the Federation’ existential and ecological crisis, a group with questionable policies, Kirk as Sarek’s “Son”, Kirk avenging, the return…again, ratings and final thoughts. In the news segment we rejoice at the news about Kirsten Beyer’s new writing gig and remind everyone that Jeff Lang’s Force in Motion is out now.
