A New Yorker staff writer investigates his grandfather, a Nazi Party Chief, in this “unflinching, gorgeously written, and deeply moving exploration of morality, family, and war” (Patrick Radden Keefe, author of Empire of Pain).  As a boy growing up in Oklahoma, Burkhard Bilger often heard his parents tell stories about the Germany of their youth. Winters in the Black Forest, when the snow piled up to the eaves and haunches of smoked speck hung from the rafters. Springtime along the Rhine, when the storks came home to nest on rooftops. His parents were born in 1935 and had lived through the Second World War, but those stories, vivid as they were, had strange omissions. His mother was a historian, yet she rarely talked about her father's relationship to the Nazis, or his role in the war. Then one day a packet of letters arrived from Germany, yellowed with age, and a secret history began to unfold. Karl Gönner was an elementary school teacher and father of four when the war began. In 1940, he was posted to a village in Alsace, in occupied France, and ordered to reeducate its children—to turn them into proper Germans. He was a loyal Nazi when he arrived, but as the war went on his allegiance wavered. According to some villagers, he risked his life shielding them from his own party's brutalities. According to others, he ruled the village with an iron fist. After the war, Gönner was charged with giving an order that led police to beat a local farmer to death. Was he guilty or innocent? A war criminal or just an ordinary man, struggling to do right from within a monstrous regime?  Fatherland: A Memoir of War, Conscience, and Family Secrets (Random House, 2023) is the story of Bilger's nearly ten-year quest to uncover the truth. It is a book of gripping suspense and moral inquiry—a tale of chance encounters and serendipitous discoveries in archives and villages across Germany and France. Long admired for his profiles in The New Yorker, Bilger brings the same open-hearted curiosity to his grandfather's story and the questions it raises. What do we owe the past? How can we make peace with it without perpetuating its wrongs? Intimate and far-reaching, Fatherland is an extraordinary odyssey through the great upheavals of the past century. But OxyContin did not give rise to opioid addiction, although it jump-started the current epidemic. Heroin has been a common street drug ever since it was banned in 1924. Morphine has also been widely abused. Nor would taking OxyContin off the market end the epidemic. The overwhelming majority of opioid deaths are caused not by OxyContin but by combinations of fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine, often brought in from China via Mexican cartels, and frequently taken along with benzodiazepines (such as Valium or Xanax) and alcohol. These drugs are cheaper and stronger, particularly fentanyl. Fentanyl was first synthesized in 1960, and soon became widely used as an anesthetic and powerful painkiller. It is legally manufactured and highly effective when used appropriately, often for short medical procedures such as colonoscopies. The illicit production and street use is relatively new, but it is now the main cause of most opioid-related deaths (nearly 90 percent in Massachusetts). The steady increase in opioid deaths after OxyContin came on the market has been supplanted by a much faster increase starting around 2013, when heroin and fentanyl use increased dramatically. We now have two epidemics—the overuse of prescription drugs and the much more deadly and now largely unrelated epidemic of street drugs. By concentrating on the first, we are closing the barn door after the horse is long gone. https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2018/12/06/opioid-nation/ Julia Lovell writes in her excellent 2015 book, The Opium War: Drugs, Dreams, and the Making of Modern China: The missionaries became natural allies of the smugglers: when they first arrived on the coast of China, they docked among opium traders on the island of Lintin; they interpreted for them in exchange for passages up the coast, distributing tracts while the drug was taken onshore; and in the Chinese Repository, Canton's leading English-language publication, they shared a forum for spreading their views on the urgent need to open China, by whatever means necessary. By the 1830s, merchants and missionaries alike favoured violence. ‘[W]hen an opponent supports his argument with physical force, [the Chinese] can be crouching, gentle, and even kind', observed Karl Gützlaff, a stout Pomeranian missionary who would, during the Opium War, lead the British military occupation of parts of eastern China, running armies of Chinese spies and collaborators. The slightest provocation would do. In 1831, traders had written to the government in India, demanding a fleet of warships to avenge the Chinese authorities' partial demolition of a front garden that the British had illegally requisitioned…

Það er sannkölluð sögustund í tíunda þætti hlaðvarpsins Máltíðar. Gestur þáttarins er Gunnar Karl Gíslason sem er maðurinn að baki DILL, eina veitingastað landsins sem hlotið hefur eftirsótta stjörnu frá Michelin-veitingahúsahandbókinni. Gunnar hefur frá mörgu að segja frá ferlinum, allt frá námsárum sínum á Akureyri á síðustu öld til þess að opna veitingastað sem yfirkokkur í New York.

(copy the link to share with your friends and family via text The early Soviet origins theory was rejected by Swedish, British, and U.S. military investigators because no recognizable rocket fragments were ever found, and according to some sightings, the objects displayed some combination of leaving no exhaust trail, moving too slowly, flying horizontally, traveling and maneuvering in formation, and appearing to be silent. The sightings most often consisted of fast-flying rocket- or missile-shaped objects, with or without wings, visible for mere seconds. Instances of slower moving, cigar-shaped objects are also known. A hissing or rumbling sound was sometimes reported. Crashes were not uncommon, almost always in lakes. Reports were made of objects crashing into a lake, sometimes then propelling themselves across the surface before sinking. The Swedish military performed several dives in the affected lakes shortly after the crashes, but found nothing other than occasional craters in the lake bottom or torn off aquatic plants. Swedish Air Force officer Karl-Gösta Bartoll searches for a "ghost rocket" seen to crash into Lake Kölmjärv on July 19, 1946. The best known of these crashes occurred on July 19, 1946, into Lake Kölmjärv [sv], Sweden. Witnesses reported a gray, rocket-shaped object with wings crashing in the lake. One witness interviewed heard a thunderclap, possibly the object exploding. However, a 3-week military search reported nothing. Immediately after the investigation, the Swedish Air Force officer who led the search, Karl-Gösta Bartoll submitted a report in which he stated that the bottom of the lake had been disturbed but nothing was recovered and that "there are many indications that the Kölmjärv object disintegrated itself...the object was probably manufactured in a lightweight material, possibly a kind of magnesium alloy that would disintegrate easily, and not give indications on our instruments".[2] When Bartoll was later interviewed in 1984 by Swedish researcher Clas Svahn, he again said their investigation suggested the object largely disintegrated in flight and insisted that "what people saw were real, physical objects".[3] On October 10, 1946, the Swedish Defense Staff publicly stated, "Most observations are vague and must be treated very skeptically. In some cases, however, clear, unambiguous observations have been made that cannot be explained as natural phenomena, Swedish aircraft, or imagination on the part of the observer. Echo, radar, and other equipment registered readings but gave no clue as to the nature of the objects". It was also stated that fragments alleged to have come from the missiles were nothing more than ordinary coke or slag.[4] On December 3, 1946, a memo was drafted for the Swedish Ghost Rocket committee stating "nearly one hundred impacts have been reported and thirty pieces of debris have been received and examined by Swedish National Defence Research Institute (FOA)". The debris was later said to be meteorite fragments.[citation needed] Of the nearly 1,000 reports that had been received by the Swedish Defense Staff to November 29, 225 were considered observations of "real physical objects" and every one had been seen in broad daylight.[5] Learn more about your ad choices. Sunil Abeyasekera and David Falk invited Karl Gåsste to the SIANI HQ to learn more about the controversial practice of dumpster diving: saving food from the landfill (by literally jumping into a dumpster!). Kalle speaks to us about his personal experiences and provides some helpful tips if you feel like rescuing some items yourself. But what is the future of dumpster diving? As zero-waste and sustainability appears more frequently in the societal lexicon, will this money saving endeavour become widely adopted, perhaps even encouraged? Or, is rummaging through a dumpster to find fresh food symptomatic of a broken system? Dumpster diving can be considered a stepping stone to a more sustainable world, as its existence highlights the magnitude of wasted food. So, how are some restaurants and supermarkets redirecting their “waste” to consumers? Get in touch – send us a tweet! @SIANIagri

Thoughtful Thursdays-#404 January 8th The Strong Within Daily Affirmation Podcast If I'm Going To Be Anything, I'm Going To Be Useful   “Be yourself, but always your better self.” ~Karl G. Maese I wrote this poem back in September of 2016 and I wanted to share it for this podcast I wanted to be a pilotCrashing through the heavens,But I realized that I shouldn't have touchedThings that weren't meant for me yet,That I shouldn't have reached so highBecause sometimes a dreamer needs to be grounded. From the plans that haven't been formed…Yet. I know I jumped too soon,I wanted to see what was behind the curtain,Before paying my dues. It's not that we can't dream bigger, laugh harder, and love fuller,But great things come with work,Not so much in the grind of it,But in the work of being willing to wait forever,For the things that matter the most in life. And so,I get to work on life,Connecting to this world a little better,Shattering the glass ceiling above,Not because I'm impatient,But because I work patiently,As I want to see the stars glisten,And I want to feel the heavens within my soul,All while I continually keep asking Did I put myself to good use today?CJO 9-7-16   A friend of mine was telling me about his son. He was told me how naturally gifted he was, and how he got things so quickly. And over the years of us knowing each other, he would tell me about all the great things happening within their father and son relationship. I believe his son was 5 or 6 and my friend and his wife decided they wanted to give their child an allowance for doing things around the house. And so, his son was excited knowing he would have money and be in control of his life. He could buy the things he wanted and not have to beg mom and dad like he used to…he would be a free man.   My friend's son asked what was entailed with his new job. And my friend began explaining it was putting things away he had taken out, it was about helping mom around the house, it was to learn new things on his own, and he said a few other things I don't quite remember. But the thing that really stuck with me, is my friend said to his son…your new job is about being useful.   And I thought that was a beautiful way of describing his son's new job in one descriptive word. And so I want to ask you that question: Are you being useful?   In your family life…are you being useful to everyone involved? At your job whether you're an owner, a manager, or you're one of the one's managed… are you being useful? In your life are you being useful to yourself and to those around you?   I know how easy it is to get caught in living life, in doing what's required, so that we no longer are being useful anymore. Sure, we're showing up in body but we aren't bringing something better to the situation. We are slowing our output down, we are becoming stagnant, and sometimes our energy and our attitudes of helplessness or hopelessness are overtaking our lives as we feel the burden and boredom of our repetitious life.   So I want to ask you a blunt question…are you being useful?   What was the first thing that popped up in your mind?   Now if you heard what I said, I didn't ask, are you useful? That's not a real question because you're here, so you're useful automatically. The real question is whether you are putting yourself to good use.   The old me, the one who was very hard on myself, the old depressed suicidal thinking me, the old me caught in self-pity, the old me who found ways to put all the blame on myself…was a person who had trouble answering that question because I had a darkened view of life by how I spoke about myself. And this is why I do this podcast because affirmations changed how I saw myself, affirmations changed how I acted in my life, and affirmations changed my hope in life. The reason I bring this up, is sometimes we can be too hard on ourselves and not see that we are bringing great worth into this world…so I want to ask you this question again…and I want you to let go of any preconceived notions of who you've been, good or bad…and just let your subconscious answer it freely.   Are you being useful in this life?   And if not why not?   And once you figure out why not…ask yourself how you can begin being useful?   It's a daunting question to ask how do I be useful? I mean where do you even start because there are a million options, there's a big world out there, and it can be hard to really pick a place to begin. But that's because we've made it too hard. We've made that question too big. The things that have been the most useful in my life where those small things that kept me going. They were those friends who reminded me subtly how I was doing a good job and to keep going, or it was the internal drive to create habits of doing something every day towards a goal I set—to keep chipping away at it even when it felt like I wasn't making much progress. And it was the times that I stepped out of my little bubble and asked what my job needed more of, what my family needed more of, and what the world needed more of…and how could I be part of the answer for that?   So how can you focus on being useful right now? So take a quick second and think about what you could do this moment to be a little more useful here, right now. Yes, some of you may be driving, so it may be harder…but maybe being useful while you're driving is being more attentive on the road keeping everyone safe. Maybe if you're running a meeting, you could see how you can help your team be more engaged by asking more questions instead of just talking the whole time. Maybe when you come home you can ask your partner how you can help out with preparing something instead of it always being all on them.   And to become useful, it's not about doing those grand gestures that we think about...you know the ones that say we have to be the hero to be useful. It's actually the small questions that will be the most valuable we keep asking ourselves of what am I doing right now…and how can I be more useful in this endeavor.   Lao Tzu said, “Great acts are made up of small deeds.” Being useful begins with becoming more aware of where we are, what we're doing, and asking ourselves or others…how can I be of better service to you? Because we already are useful; but are we putting ourselves to good use? I think the lives we want to live are ones not of surviving, but of being of good use to the world. So how can you make an impact in your little corner of the world no matter how big or small—how can you do something right now to be of use to someone, somewhere…even if that person's you?   Today's Personal Commitment: What's your impact on the world? No matter how big or how small what is the impact your making? I'm serious here…give me an answer, give me any answer. But don't take too much time to think about it, just say what bubbles up from your subconscious. And if you're coming up blank…maybe you should start asking that question a little more deliberately in your life.   And as I said earlier being impactful doesn't have to involve only big things either because the small daily acts of impact usually will be better than the occasional big goal we try to achieve…if we ever do reach that pie in the sky goal we've set for ourselves. And it's not that I'm saying to have a small impact, it's that I'm saying the small consistent impactful things will become big, huge, great, amazing things in this world.   So how can you be of good use today? How can you ask yourself that question every morning…and then finish your night off with the questions—was I successful in being useful today, and did I have an impact on this day?   From a small seed, a mighty gift will be born into this world. So plant your impact seeds daily, and continue to water them—as a mighty and beautiful life will be born because of this   If I'm Going To Be Anything, I'm Going To Be Useful   Thanks for listening.  I'm sending great energy your way as we become Strong Within together, Personal Development Life Coach- Chris O'Hearn Contact info- email: chris@strongwithin.com  phone:865-219-3247     Music by: - Zest by basematic (c) copyright 2011 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. - I Have Often Told You Stories (guitar instrumental) by Ivan Chew (c) copyright 2013 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license.
