On today's Healing 101 I am joined by Katie McKenna once again to talk about something that isn't always visible but can have a profound and lasting impact—emotional abuse. Unlike physical abuse, emotional abuse can be subtle, insidious, and difficult to recognise, but its effects on self-worth, confidence, and relationships can be just as damaging. In this episode, we'll explore the hidden signs of emotional abuse—from gaslighting and silent treatment to intense jealousy and role reversal in parent-child relationships. We'll talk about why emotional abuse can make someone more vulnerable to future abusive relationships, and most importantly, how to begin the process of healing. Katie shares powerful insights on how to rebuild your sense of self, set boundaries, and take small but meaningful steps toward self-empowerment. If you've ever struggled with self-doubt, questioned your reality in relationships, or found it hard to say "no," this episode is for you.Find Katie:Instagram: @katiemckennapsychotherapistWebsite: https://www.katiemckenna.ie/Follow us on social media for more insights, behind-the-scenes moments, and community discussions. Delanie Fischer is joined by psychotherapists, Katie McKenna and Helen Villiers, to discuss the impact of being raised by a narcissistic parent, and how it affects the entire family system. Katie and Helen provide everyday examples of what these dynamics can look like, why it can be extremely challenging for a survivor of this type of abuse to acknowledge their own experience (and why there's no such thing as an "empath"), and what steps can be taken towards healing and unlearning unhealthy behaviors. Katie McKenna, a professional speaker, leadership coach, and bestselling author, turned a life-altering accident into a powerful story of resilience. On a sunny morning in Brooklyn, Katie was run over by an 18-wheeler, an ordeal that she miraculously survived after 10 hours of emergency surgery. In her conversation with Ryan, Katie recounts that harrowing day and the moment she was told she might never walk again, a prognosis that led her to change the way her doctor delivers life-altering news. Now, with a mission to make life better for everyone she meets, Katie shares how she channels her experience into helping others overcome their own challenges with grit, hope, and humor. She also reveals whether she would change her past if given the chance and why she fiercely pursues joy, feeling blessed rather than entitled to life. And yes, she has gotten back on a bike—at Burning Man, no less, in an unforgettable moment of reclaiming her power.

What does narcissism in mothers look like? According to psychotherapists Helen Villiers and Katie McKenna, the narcissistic mother can be “extremely critical, condescending, oppressive and very judgmental”, with devastating impacts for the entire family. They can also use covert or insidious tactics: taking on a victim role or using guilt tripping or stonewalling to get their way. In this episode, Villiers and McKenna join Róisín Ingle to discuss the main traits of maternal narcissism, how it can impact families and how to heal the emotional scars that come with being a child of narcissistic parents.Their new book You're Not the Problem: The impact of narcissism and emotional abuse and how to heal is out now. Psychotherapists Helen Villiers and Katie McKenna talk about narcissism. Their new book is "You're Not The Problem –The Impact of Narcissism and Emotional Abuse and How to Heal". Helen and Katie's podcast is called In Sight: Exposing Narcissism.
You might remember psychotherapists Helen Villiers and Katie McKenna from episode 200 where we talked about toxic relationships and their impact on ADHDers. You may also know their podcast called In Sight: Exposing Narcissism.Well, since we last visited, they're ALSO co-authors of You're Not the Problem: The Impact of Narcissism and Emotional Abuse and How to Heal.I'm honored to have these two incredible ladies back on the podcast to discuss some of the emotionally abusive behaviors they commonly see from parent to child. Even if you believe you had a very normal childhood and your parents were wonderful people, I'd urge to to listen to this episode. A lot of the tendencies your parents might've had (or have now) may be your normal, but that doesn't mean there's not some generational trauma at play. Note: This is not me saying your parents aren't wonderful people; they very well may be! But recognizing some of these tendencies can be PIVOTAL to unpacking and working through your ADHD — and they can help you avoid repeating the same behaviors. So, without further adieu, I re-welcome, Helen and Katie!Does this episode resonate with you? I invite you to join my group coaching program FOCUSED. This program is for you if you're interested in regular coaching calls and a supportive community with all the tools needed to thrive with ADHD.

Reassurance Romans 8:38-39 #Nightlight #RTTBROS “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 8:38-39 Robert J. Morgan is a pastor and author who wrote a book called “Great Is Thy Faithfulness: 52 Reasons to Trust God When Hope Feels Lost” 12. In this book, he provides 52 scriptures and devotions that remind us that our loving God always follows through on what He says He will do In it he shared the story of Katie McKenna was run over by a truck and was in surgery for many hours; in the hospital for many weeks. When she returned home from the hospital she was still traumatized physically and psychologically. But her parents were there to help her. She wrote about how she would always ask them if it was going to be okay. She wasn't even sure of what “it” was; she just needed reassurance. Her mom and dad did that for her—they were hopeful, so she was hopeful; they were sure, so she was sure. Without them she would have fallen into the dark side of her fear. They pulled her into the light of a better future . The ministry of reassurance is powerful. We need someone to tell us it is going to be okay, whatever “it” is. We need someone to give us reassurance about life. When they are hopeful, it helps us be hopeful. Here are some verses from the King James Version of the Bible that talk about reassurance: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” - Romans 8:28 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” - John 14:27 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 8:38-39 Our Podcast, Blog and YouTube Links https://linktr.ee/rttbros Be sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe it helps get the word out. The Power of Therapy for Rejection SensitivityHelen Villiers is here with me again in this week's podcast! You might remember Helen from Episode #200: Maybe I'm Not the Problem: Understanding Emotional Abuse with Helen Villiers and Katie McKenna. Helen is a psychotherapist and co-host of the podcast, In Sight - Exposing Narcissism. In part 3 of the rejection series, we talk about rejection trauma from the beautiful perspective of a therapist with ADHD. This episode is so affirming of my feelings and opinions shared last week on Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. Helen explains important terms such as toxic shame, moral defense, mirroring and stonewalling. We also learn how to identify if a therapist is a good therapist. But my favorite part is when Helen helps me identify why it can be so hard to not take rejection personally and why I look for mirroring in relationships to help me feel safe. The moral of the story is: therapy works! And immersing yourself in good education, encouragement and coaching in a group like FOCUSED can make a world of difference in dealing with rejection in everyday life.Hang out with me on Instagram HERE.

In this special episode, I've invited emotional abuse and relationship experts, Katie McKenna and Helen Villiers, to share their perspective on toxic relationships and how they affect ADHDers. You may know these incredible women from their podcast In Sight: Exposing Narcissism. With Helen being a fellow ADHDer and Katie deserving a gold medal for supporting neurodivergence, I'm in great company during this conversation as we learn definitions for emotional abuse, narcissism, gaslighting and even mysophobia. Many of us adults with ADHD were raised with neurotypical or even narcissistic parents who did not understand and accept us for our neurodivergence. As a result, we may be more susceptible to similarly toxic and abusive relationships with people who deny our feelings and needs. Please give this episode a listen and share with friends and family as you never know who may be suffering in an abusive relationship. I encourage my listeners to contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800.799.SAFE (7233) if you feel that you are in danger and need help.I invite you to join my group coaching program FOCUSED, where adults like you receive regular coaching calls and have a supportive community with all the tools needed to thrive with ADHD. In this episode, Matt interviews captivating speaker and author, Katie McKenna. Katie shares her story of how a life-altering accident shifted her thought process and led her down a path of writing and professional coaching. Katie and Matt dig into the various mental states that people have in life-changing events, how to make small and attainable goals and then celebrate them, and how shift our thinking when things happening around us may leave us feeling worried, concerned, or anxious. Katie shares how you can take anything you've dreamed of coupled with support and accountability and push forward even when you feel like giving up. About Katie McKenna: Katie McKenna is a professional speaker, leadership coach and bestselling author, living in Vermont. People often say, "I feel like I've been run over by a truck." Katie actually was. On a sunny morning bike ride in Brooklyn, 24-year-old Katie McKenna was forever changed when she was run over by an 18-wheeler. Being crushed under a massive semi wasn't something Katie should have survived. After 10 hours of emergency surgery, she woke to find herself in a body and a life that would never be the same. What began as a journal entry on a borrowed laptop during her extended hospital stay, became the best-selling memoir, How to Get Run Over by a Truck. Katie now travels the country, speaking to a vast array of audiences on how to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles with resilience, hope, humor and gratitude. As a professional coach, Katie has made it her mission to use her life experience, insights and passion to inspire and support others. Through her talks she gives audiences the tools to tap into their grit, personal courage, and joy to overcome challenges big and small. Her story inspires others to see how kindness can change the course of a person's life, to delight in the beauty of the everyday, and to see the strength that lives within themselves. Katie's work has been featured in Health Magazine, Brooklyn Magazine, Reader's Digest, Chicken Soup for the Soul, and the Daily Mail as well as many other publications. Katie has spoken at Fortune 500 companies, and Hospitals, Medical Schools, Conferences and Universities across the country. Most recently, Ellen DeGeneres and the writers of the award-winning Broadway musical “Come from Away” have teamed up with Warner Brothers to develop a 1-hour drama based on Katie's story. Welcome to the Women of Worth Podcast with Claire Fealy! In today's episode, you are going to hear part 2 of the incredible episode I recorded with Katie McKenna about childhood and trauma responses. We dive into why having compassion is so important on your healing journey. We want you to know that you are enough and that you don't have to be anyone but YOURSELF!But, this isn't just my podcast. I would never be where I am today without you! So, settle in, grab a nice cup of tea, and welcome to another episode of OUR podcast.Bring Compassion [1:30]When you connect with your inner child, you can't not have compassion for a 5 year old you that was just trying to be seen, heard, and valued in the middle of chaos. [2:00]When clients hear their story as if it's someone else's, they have so much more compassion because it interrupts the pattern of dismissing your emotions and experiences. [2:40]You need to have a balanced scale. So here is one side- generous, kind, compassionate, loving, empathic, and interesting. And if that is balanced with boundaries and express and my own wants and needs having my own preferences and having a felt sense of self, if that is in balance, that is okay. [5:15]Childhood Development [5:50]There is absolutely no blame or accountability to you in childhood. This was something that was pushed on you. [6:00]It's up to the parents to set healthy boundaries. [6:15]These are survival responses. They served a purpose in childhood. You did exactly what you needed to do. [6:45]Kids will have emotional meltdowns and teenagers are so impulsive because they can't think of the logical consequences. [8:40]You are Enough [9:00]You never have to be anything but yourself. [9:45]You are your own greatest healer. [10:30]I went on a mission to rescue other people, but I ended up rescuing myself. [12:00]If you want to do something, don't do it for praise. [16:00]The most profound thing I did for my healing was sitting with myself. [17:00]The wounds of emotional neglect is the death of a thousand cuts. [18:40]Your core values are like your joy GPS. [22:30]When you're not being yourself, you don't feel seen, heard and valued. Katie McKenna joins me from her home in Pana, Illinois, via Zoom to share her story of daydreaming as a young kid of wanting to listen to rock-and-roll music and party with friends, becoming ungovernable as a teenager, and trying meth for the first time at 12 years old. Her do-what-I-want attitude lead her to 25 months in prison after a fatal car accident. After her release from prison, she had to experiment for a few more years before she believed she was worth the effort of turning her life around.
Here's another psycho-educational episode to help you understand what you're working with. We've heard of the fight or flight response, even the freeze response but what about the fourth response - fawn? Here psychotherapist Katie McKenna breaks down the fawn response, which includes a lot of the behaviours, triggering anxiety, that you'll be familiar with, including people pleasing. About our guest: Katie McKenna MIACP runs a successful private psychotherapy practice in a G.P practice in Co.Monaghan Ireland. Katie is accredited by the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and has over a decade of experience. Katie's passion is to help women recognise how their conditioned beliefs and habitual behaviours are keeping them shackled and unable to move forward. A message to the listeners from Katie: My passion is to help women recognise how their conditioned beliefs and habitual behaviours are keeping them trapped in a cycle of people-pleasing and codependency. How To Get Run Over By A Truck is a “brave and funny memoir” of a harrowing accident that changed Katie McKenna’s life ~ listen in to hear her story of transformation from Old Katie to New Katie.
Katie McKenna didn’t pull the ripcord to follow the life that she had always dreamed of living, she had the ripcord yanked on her and it transformed her way of living life. 10 years ago she was working in finance because her Dad and her brother told her it would be a very good job for her. She was living someone else’s expectation. She planned to work for 5 years, save a bunch of money and finally do what she was really meant to do when one morning she went out on a bike ride and at a stop light she signaled to a semi-truck driver that she was turning right. The driver didn’t see her. The light turned green, Katie started peddling turning right and unfortunately so did the truck. Like the Show? Leave a Review for Go Hunt Life on Apple Podcasts Katie was hit, knocked to the pavement run over by the front 4 wheels of the semi-truck’s trailer right across her midsection. She laid there in shock only to turn and look at the back set of wheels coming straight for her. All she could do was scream "noooooo" as the 2nd set of wheels rolled over her body. I catch up to Katie over 10 years after that tragic accident and we discuss her life since that October morning and how she is now a motivating force helping people get over trauma. In this episode we discuss... Her career in finance living someone else's expectation. That perfect bike ride on October 2nd. Signaling to the driver of the 18-wheeler The sound of the accident. Feeling the mud flaps slap her body. The surgeon telling her that she probably wouldn't survive the surgery. Waking up, alive and grappling with her way of living life had completely changed forever. Going back to work 6 months after the accident. Her 10 journey of recovery and inspiring others to conquer tragedy. Motivating others that are not living their own authentic life to pursue the life of their dreams. It starts by making one small incremental change at a time which is exactly how she got from laying on that street to training for her 3rd half marathon.
